In 63 Elvis was already bored and phoning it in. Gene was was in serious pain and giving the crowd Everything. He. Had. No wonder he died young. RIP Gene.
Gene had little commercial success in the USA, due to his far to edgy persona, it didn't wash well with 50s America, he had more success in early 60s Europe where he was adopted as a kind of rocker, wearing leather and being outrageous, this gave him a couple of UK top 20 hits and regular spots on TV and radio
Yeah you are probably right. A edgy persona he was, in comparison to the mainstream of that era he certainly was. But I always find very much softness and soufulness in his character, and also his way of singing. In my opinion he tops elvis, gots more edge ;-)'
This guy gave it all. A true rock and roller.. 🎶🎸 But he looks like he' ll was in terrible pain at the beginning of the video.. Still delivered an awesome performance..
I'm thinking perhaps the vid in the top of the video was taken at the end - he is out of breath and obviously sweating - but either way, the man is in severe pain, and rocking anyway, so good on him.
@@JoshMaxPower Yes, it was at the end of the concert, he always performed in absolute pain and yet left his soul at the stage in every performance he did. His bandmates had to take him to emergency after every concert to fix him a new cast on his leg as he kept breaking them performing.
Amazing performance… to see him come on stage using crutches then toss them away & totally rock the joint is astonishing! “But when your leg still hurts and you need more shirts You got to get back on the road” Sweet Gene Vincent indeed! ❤
THANKS FOR POSTING THIS ! I was there, I was sixteen, that was my first moment of joy since my father died shortly before (thanks mum for letting me go - "they got a rocking party going down the street, hey mama don't you hear that beat" -) and I still remember Gene Vincent coming on stage with his clutches, how strong ! This really is a motivation to me. I have a problem with my left foot and sometimes the pain is so strong I can't even walk a few meters. Seing him doing his gig even with his leg gives me the power to fight against the pain and just do my thing. I wish I could have met him in real life...
yeah mate he was a real legend pity his life was so mismanaged .there are books out on him just go The Day The World Turned Blue For a good read warts and all . all his music is on GOOGLE .
I sympathize with you. I have two surgeries on my right knee and one on my left knee, and still have a bit of chronic pain, so my admiration for Gene Vincent for giving it all and Rocking on onstage despite his serious chronic pain, is even greater.
In the opening shots of this video Gene Vincent looks in pain. He is. Two and half years before this 1963 performance in Brussels, Gene had been in a serious auto accident while riding in a taxi cab in England with Eddie Cochran. Eddie was killed and Gene was crippled for life.
I live about 5 miles from the scene of the accident. There is a rock and roll festival round here that was started to commemorate Eddie Cochrane, that usually happens every year. Like you say, you can see Gene is very uncomfortable, amazing that he kept working after such a painful injury.
I cry every time I watch this. I love Gene so much and he always comes to mind whenever I listen to John Lennon. There are particular moments in his solo career when the influence just jumps out and grabs you by the heart. God bless them both.
Genes leg was already messed up, there's various versions as to how this happened. The better more heroic had the accident whilst in the navy where he'd seen active service in Korea. Unverified. Or used his discharge money from getting out the navy and was dangerously riding around drunk when he crashed his bike narrowly missing and possibly killing or maiming a youngster crossing in front of him
@@adrinathegreat3095He was injured on april 17th, 1960 in a car crash along with his mate Eddie Cochran and his girlfriend. Eddie died, Gene's leg was messed up afterwards. He then began to bend forward to the mic after the crash, to reduce the pressure on his leg. But i do recall that not long after the crash, Gene can been seen in performances where he is remotely able to move on both legs. You barely notice he is injured. But I also wander why and how his leg injury worsened, anyone??
@FloorController He actually sustained the damaged leg orginally in a motor cycle accident while serving in the US Navy in the mid 50s. But you are right it was further damaged in the car accident, which killed Eddie. The navy doctors wanted to amputate the leg from the start, but Gene refused. He suffered great pain from that moment on. I wonder sometimes how he managed. A truly great performer. I am glad I saw him live in the early 60s. The memories will always linger.
Had to watch this again. The first time I only watched him and the second time I notice his band. They were moving all over around him. He had some great moves. Great performance. They called that song Rock a billy but that was a transitional performance. I am an Elvis fan and never knew Gene had any other hits. Elvis band didn’t move like that! Elvis did all the moving. It was an eye opener to watch this video of Gene. Enjoyed it immensely.
Wow, I never saw Gene in person but I still have my 78 Be bop a Lula. He sounded so much like Elvis that I was fooled too. Seeing this performance he had a lot of energy in spite of being physically challenged had some good moves.
This was soo brave of Gene just a couple of years after he's best buddy Eddie Cochran died in a tragic car accident in April 1960 Gene carried on Rock n Rolling with out the blue caps he's 56 boys on be bop alula and many more of his best Rockabilly music Gene was much more in pain around this time and drank more whisky to kill the pain which killed him in the end
A brilliant, heroic performance. In spite of the pain from his crippled leg, and after a long show, he comes out for this encore and rocks his ass off! Unbelievable! And take note, with all that head shaking and all that agony, he never even scrunches a note. His singing is perfect. No realtime auto-tune back then, baby! How many people could do that? And props to The Sunlights. They might not be The Blue Caps, but for raw spirit and energy, they can't be beat.
Gêne vincent est sensationnel dommage que cette jambe lui est posé tant de problème. Mais il était loyal et humble et reconnaissait que Vince Taylor avait le meilleur jeu de scène.
Sitting in the wings, you can see the pain in his face, then he hobbles onstage, gyrating like he was cured, now that my friends is true honest Rock and Roll!!
Incredible the story behind this performance, I'm just reading about his accidents. When I saw him chuck the crutches I honestly thought it was all a gimmick. But that was real! What a guy. Love the energy, the talent, the speed.
the leg was severely injured in the car wreck that killed Eddie Cochran "n April 16, 1960, while on tour in the UK, Vincent, Eddie Cochran and the songwriter Sharon Sheeley were involved in a high-speed traffic accident in a private-hire taxi in Chippenham, Wiltshire. Vincent broke his ribs and collarbone and further damaged his weakened leg.[3] Sheeley suffered a broken pelvis. Cochran, who had been thrown from the vehicle, suffered serious brain injuries and died the next day. Vincent returned to the United States after the accident.[citation needed]

he also died in agony from a bleeding ulcer at his parents feet on October 12 1971. may his music live on forever through CZcams.
That ladies and gentlemen was rock & roll
They walked so literally every rock band could run.
They hacked through the jungles with a machete and blazed a trail that eventually became a four-lane super-highway, complete with rest stops.
I saw him in woolwich in 1960. Sitting next to me was a young guy headed for fame .
