I suspect that Extenders will still have niche uses. Situations where, for example, you want to more precisely control where power flows, or physically constrained areas that a rail line simply won't fit in.
Rails will definitely be superior for connecting multiple bases and remote structures, though.
Used rails to dig to the core, now i have an easy ride to the middle of the planet
transformers and diode type aplicatons also probably possible to make a data cell sort of thing with charging and discharging batteries and taking an aoutmaton signal off of that
I believe they updated extenders so you are able to toggle between uni-directional power and two way power flow.

Rails are a good way to transport power and oxygen across large areas.
Extenders can pass power both ways. I'm looking at some right now. You have to mouse-over them and hit "F" to toggle bi-directional.

Thought I’d give Astroneer a try after seeing it in GamePass for the last year and wow am I glad I did. So hard to put the controller down. Still on my first save but can’t figure out the automation buttons etc even after watching videos. None the less, you sir are awesome! Thank you for the great content!!

Extenders can switch the mode they are operating in to be bi-directional or uni-directional. Just hold "F" on the extender

The rails are very useful for long distance power. Like the massive solar panel on the other side of the planet i can get to without placing 200 platforms/extenders. And I can get between them very quickly too

If you use a storage sensor and a proximity repreater on your storage on the rail car it will start your rail again if it's stopped, anything with paired with the proximity repeater will start your car
Yeah, I saw that video also, but you don't need it because the storage senor already has a pin on it. That is almost like flipping a light switch twice to turn on a light once. The other problem is what else the proximity repeater might activate by accident.

I remember one time someone called me crazy because I switched my c and v controls and always put my bases underground (not in caves either; self dug spaces) which leads to a whole network of extenders and other wires poking out of the ground. And as one extra nail in the coffin my favorite spot is just under the surface on Glacio, which leads to rails going literally all the way around the planet.
Completely crazy. :P
Something that didn't occur to me while watching the stream is what the extent of the carving out if a tall pillar is place inside a small tunnel.
Will it make a new tunnel above a "service duct" or will it turn into a big single tunnel.

I'm slowly getting there. I haven't gotten to a planet where I can get titanium, but I do have a trade rocket. I've been getting my titanium that way
Yeah, scrap is a very viable way to get resources.
@@OneLastMidnight just a real pain in the ass. I don't have a large shredder yet. Bytes. That and I've been focusing on my off-world transport. Such as getting it to a point where I have a large shuttle and a hydrazine thruster

great video, but i have a question. how do i recall the train back to the station from the end of the rail line? i want to make a rail line down to the core of the planet, but i want to be able to go back out, and also be able to unload while i'm still in the caves.

Dang! The update has broken the Point Animation Disable Mod and the Terrain Tangent Mod in Cheat Engine. These make playing Astro SO MUCH BETTER! I hope a) they modders fix these mods and b) SE include them into the game!
Shame the mods don't work anymore. I'll keep and eye on them as well and maybe do some Astroneer modded videos.

Accidentally drilled into the ground with a rail once. Didn't know there was a unconnected endstation underground.
do you know how to 'UNsnap' rails when they are too close and you don't want to connect it ?
Would be nice to place a hover seat on it and have it transport you to all over the place aswell xD
the train engine allows you to enter which is why in the video he goes to cars to start the train.

Hi Midnight.
I just had my first experience with the Rail system, starting the Missions on Glacio, as directed. I added the two Wind Turbines as directed but no other power or batteries so I am confused as to where the train gets its power from when the Turbines are not active. Nor did I connect any Oxygen to it but it still provides me with oxygen when I am near by. So what gives?
Interesting. A bug maybe? I'm not sure if the mission starting train station provides power - like a hab. You can test it by trying to plug something into that starter station and see if it works, or a splitter and it will display the power.

That's a good point about the Hab as it also provides oxygen and is not movable. I presume that the Stations built through the printer are moveable.
Upon reflection, I guess that the Station planted on Glacio through the Missions is just a way to introduce players to the rail system (albeit giving a false impression of how the stations function with regards to power and oxygen)
Would have been nice had they made it like a real train and allowed you to hook two or more engines to have a longer train
I was hoping for a super speed mode that burns hydrazine. I have so much fuel with nothing to use it on haha

Yeah, sorry to hear something went wrong with the switch release.
Im guessing its because the switch version needs more work as the devs probably find it hard making it on a different type of console because they have to adapt to the small storage space and its limit before it breaks

From what I heard, it’s more there were a couple of Switch-specific bugs that they wanted to iron out before release, as otherwise releasing now and making a hot fix for those bugs would end up with that hot fix taking much longer to come out.

True, but the engine or C.O.L.E. will make the train go faster. But you are correct, they aren't needed and you can just use a set.

Sure, there are several ways to get resources.
I wonder if, like the snails, each player in a server could claim their own C.O.L.E once the mission is completed.

Extenders also transfer power both ways and serves oxygen too bruh...
extenders are directional, unless you swap plug them they will only feed in one direction so depending on the setup they may not work.
Is this on the switch version?
No PC, but it should work for Switch unless they greatly changed the code.

I think is time they add base buildings mechanics in this game even having a flat surface is a pain in the teeth.
Just imagine being able to build flat metal surfaces, rooms, stairs, color lamps, text displays and conveyors...
Also they should add a new ultra-difficult planet for the sake of keep grinding in a pointless game.
This is nice how game does not tell you, you can have only one COLE. Why only one? Why not like manufacturable VTOL? Does that mean to artificially extend the gameplay by not allowing the user to move his train faster (even that "faster" is not that more than usual train speed).
Oh I see here. Buy buy buy cosmetics. Why? It does not affect the gameplay.
Overall, this is second time I when i think devs are finished with the game, because old bugs are not repaired, new bugs added, support forum abandoned almost a year ago, no dev response on any help/bug report threads on Steam. Feels like playerbase is being pushed away. But anyway, keep buying cosmetics.
Not sure what the direction of the game is taking, but getting new content is nice. You DON"T have to buy cosmetics. That is your choice. As for support... I think they moved that all to Reddit a while back - if I remember correctly.
