I remember when "special edition" used to mean something in these games.
Can u give an example I don’t ever remember buying a special edition and getting anything diff gameplay wise honestly….. some collectors editions come with statues and shot I guess that’s cool for 200 bucks 😂 🤷🏻♂️

Madden 09 has a mode that allowed you to play as yourself, and it included practice, doing interviews, making commercials, and even line on the line of scrimmage (rather than the traditional birds eye view)
I usually get me a 5 piece from a KFC and blow out the toilet later for a good price. Get some biscuits put some Tabasco on it and I'm gonna rip ass like no other. God damn love me some KFC worst decision is eating there and not blowing out their toilet bc if drive home im speeding like a mf 5 min later bc I'm gonna explode. Run right through the garage door kick down the door and tear up my bathroom God damn no fun.

I kid you not, I got a free copy of Madden 19 at EA’s headquarters while I was attending a HBCU job tour there. Needless to say, I played it for a while and haven’t touched it since 2018.

I've never been a fan of Madden games, tbh. But my brother has always played them, and his pure unadulterated rage he's directed towards this game has made me happy I discovered your channel to give him a heads up on how bad the games after this were. He usually would skip every other entry, but he even skipped Madden 21 to my surprise.

Having played a lot of Madden in decades past but none since around 2017, I was planning to like the video for the premise, but I almost always wait until the very end to submit a like. I was truly caught off guard and legitimately bellowed out a laugh at your last line before thanking your viewers. Stay golden, Pony Boy.

I have owned that game for a few months now and have played the shit out of it. It's because of you I was inspired to invest in some of the older PS2 Maddens, such as 04-08. You have re-ignited the love for the Madden series when it was good within me. And for that I will be eternally grateful to you. Keep pushing, my friend.
My least favorite part about Madden 19 was that Jeff "Bus" Jibber wasn't a playable character in the game.

Part of the problem the game has been shit for so long the younger people covering the game just don't know better. I'm 40. Been playing madden since sega and ncaa when it was bill walsh college football. I've seen it all. Its kinda mind blowing how this game has evolved and devolved over the years.

That said, I gotta let you know the only reason I suspect you probably didn't see much true sim gamers talking about how bad Madden 19 really was then is because by then, a lot of the old heads that covered how bad Madden has gotten (and keep in mind, a lot of old heads started to call out Madden since Madden 09 for the 360) had long since moved on. Like for instance, there's this old Sim head by the name of Gideon Prime (aka Apexisfree) who used to be known for calling out the exact same BS in Madden. But after several years of just that, including helping work on Backbreaker, he finally gave up on the Sim football platform altogether and shifted his focus to critiquing the NBA 2K series, since he believes they are far much ahead than Madden, but still need to make sure they keep their level of quality in sim (if not flat out improve upon it) instead of getting complacent like EA has done.

Hearing your story is crazy and really interesting. I started playing madden when I was 11 or 12 years old (Madden 05) and watched it deteriorate in real time year after year starting with 09. Finally stopped playing after Madden 25. Watching all your madden videos, you’re absolutely right about how much the game has fallen off in depth/quality, which game killed the series, and how the sixth gen versions (07 and 08 were my fav) were the best ones. It’s wild how you pretty much skipped thru 09-17 growing up, probably thinking you were missing out because of the constant high review scores shitty mainstream outlets handed out, only to go back and see how much the franchise (both the game and the mode itself) fell to ruin. Seriously, fuck EA.
I’ve stopped buying in protest for years and don’t regret it one bit (I’m 28 now). I love that you make these videos to try and show people it hasn’t been worth buying this game for years but there are too many diehards out there that will take anything EA will give them. Love your content though and you’re also right about the 2k series, keep it up!

I think Softdrink is way better than Ryan Moody. Moody has some good vids but imo they get repetitive and generally seem like anger bait. Softdrink’s takes are nuanced and I feel like each new video is a fresh take.

The reason why Moody might seem so repetitive is because users are sending him clips of all the bugs and Ryan hits out multiple 3-5 minute videos a few times a day. If Madden didn't suck so bad, he wouldn't have this kind of material. Ryan just doesn't say, "This is terrible!" He takes the time to break down why, from a on the football field x's and 0's standpoint, why the game is broken.

As a kid growing up in the early 2000’s, I assumed that as technology got better, so would video games. However, I was wrong and started noticing this around Madden 11.’ At first it was subtle, but eventually it just became too obvious with game play being slowed down and deleted features outside of “play now.” I am glad to have a video like this to validate that observation because I thought i was going crazy at first too!

Damn, we have very similar experiences. I always did Madden PC, and 08 was my last PC title. The disappointment set in like a slow poison starting with "uh, where's Create-a-team gone?" and just the general sense that there was nothing fun or satisfying about the game. It didn't properly hit me for a while that I'd waited 10 years for...whatever the fuck this is.

Glad you put these videos out sir. I have so many great memories of playing NCAA & Madden back in the mid 90s to middle 00s. I joined the military in 2005, and we used to have tourneys in our barracks of both games. NCAA & Madden 07-09. So much fun. I've not purchased a Madden since 2010 or so. I stopped buying them after they dropped NCAA completely. I've usually rented the current Madden every year, and it's been the biggest disappointment every year. MUT ruined it completely to me. Glad I had the chance to play 2003-2009 or so. Keep hoping the next year will be back lol. And here we are 10+yrs later. I'd rather play Tecmo Super Bowl.

Never change, and never feel like you are annoying. I've been playing Madden since before you were alive and still remember getting Madden 95' for Sega Genesis on Christmas Day. To see what it has become today is a travesty. Knowing this is the only chance you have at playing NFL Football. Such a shame that the NFL had a monopoly with EA and won't just open it up to all devs.

That was me circa 2007. Played Madden 08 on the X360 and stuck a fork in it. I was triggered enough at the downgrade of going from 2K5 to Madden and it's weird player models on 6th gen, then playing the stripped down bare bones Madden 06 for 360. Then missing out on APF 2K8 cause it was region locked in PAL territories on the Xbox 360...

25 gets to stay with the decent and up 17 was close to decent for me but 18-21 was boring and sucked 13 had nothing, 15-16 was below average but 25 somehow felt decent compared to 13 and every single one after 25

The worst Madden game is the one they keep releasing every year. It's the same game every year!
One thing that I noticed is that every time you or your opponent picked a run play a little infographic about a runningbacks yards per carry or if it was a pass a graphic would pop up about a QBs accuracy.
I am the same as you, I haven't paid full price for a Madden game in at least a decade. I hadn't bought a new Madden game until I bought Madden 09 on PS3 which I bought for like $10 because I had and LOVED ESPN NFL 2k5. I HATED Madden 09 and then bought Madden 11 for $10. I loved Madden 11 and still play it all the time. It is my go to Madden game. I just recently bought Madden 21 for $20. It isn't a terrible game, as long as you only paid $20 or less for it. If I had paid full price for it, I would be pissed. It really is something how Madden 21 isn't nearly as good as ESPN NFL 2k5. Madden has CLEARLY put all their resources and energy into Ultimate Team and not on game play, presentation or fun.

Out of sheer boredom I reinstalled’19 to play and realized that I can’t get the simulation of playing football with a game designed to be an arcade style experience. It’s obvious. Even in simulation mode you’re limited in the way you can be successful with the scripted outcomes. You’re 💯 correct in you’re assessment of this franchise. Keep doing what you do.

Im actually in the same boat myself. I had never owned a console newer than 2011, so I obviously never played the old Maddens at the time. As such, I just assumed that 19 was a good game. It was only after I bought a GameCube and Madden 07 that I realized how much of a dumpster fire modern Madden was/is

At the risk of pointing out the obvious, when EA got the exclusive rights from the NFL, they became complacent. People continue to buy Madden despite its subpar quality because, somehow, it’s better than nothing. Thank God I still have my Xbox 360, since I was able to get a copy of NCAA 14 and have tons more fun playing that than the most recent Madden.

After not playing Madden since 16, I bought 19 to try to get back into it, and never made it passed the beginning tutorials. I played a couple games on 21, seems pretty fun
I had the same Madden experience. Played 07 and 08 on PC. I did also get 10 on PS3. It wasn’t bad. The micro transactions were meh, but kind of addicting. Since then I’ve wanted to get the latest Madden every year, but they always get such bad reviews that it’s hard to justify spending $60-70 dollars.

I had a similar shock going from 08 to 2013. Like you said most the game was missing. I was so excited to being incredibly confused. I thought I was missing something 😂 like it was beyond my understanding
I rented Madden 19 from a red box.. I remember putting it in waiting for it to "update".. then I returned a kickoff, and said nope. I took the disk out and brought it back. Called redbox and said i returned the game after an hour and got a refund.
For modern Madden games I basically have 3 plays. TE drag, slot WR drag, and corner route. I run when it's short yardage or I get bored running the same 3 passes.

Madden is actually improving franchise mode. Thanks to guys like Soft drink, Ryan Moody, Angry Joe, and others it allows a lot of voices to be heard and create a concentrated attack to force EA to recognize the non MUT madden player. 👏 👏 👏
Madden 22 actually looks promising for once, unlike Madden's of past. They're finally listening to the fans re: a lot of features + gameplay, and I hope a creation suite similar to NHL's comes next year given that's what a lot of people want.
Will never buy any madden games , and heck I might even make a game like this ROBLOX without making you pay for player packs.

The animation warping in I remember being especially bad where if someone just juke or spun in your general area it sucked your guy into an animation where he’d fall on his ass

I played every madden game since 05. For the last 4 games, I’ve waited for it to either drop in price, or wait till it’s free on ea access. Never am I paying full price for a Madden game, or till at least I feel the same joy from when I played 2012

I know how you feel. Me and my best friend feel the same way. I haven't purchased a madden since madden 20. My wife got that for me for Christmas when it went on sale. I have purchased it since they've allowed all of the different versions since 21 to be on game pass. I won't consider the new ones until it gets below 20 bucks, and that's so both me and my best friend can play a similar madden game. Plus, this makes me super concerned about ncaa when it comes back

You weren't alone my friend. I was on the hype train when I saw it was coming to PC. I will put it this way, I had never asked for a refund on a game up to that point, and haven't since (Madden 19 is the lone exception to that). Madden 19 quite literally dropped the ball on this one! It aggravates me that games suck now, cause there are free agents I want to try to make superstars in a madden franchise mode, but the game sucks so much and is so lacking of depth that it isn't even worth trying. like just why?! Sorry you had to fall for the hype too my dude.

No lies detected in this video! After the disappointment of 18 I rented 19 from a redbox and couldn’t force myself to play longer than a few hours. Since then I only went on to purchase a severely discounted 22 and have no plans to do it again.

SOFTDRINKTV is and has been since its inception, A wonderfully entertaining and insightful look into the world of sports video games particularly EA'S Madden NFL series. Anybody even thinking "he's a nuisance" probably likes the madden we have today, and continues blowing every hard-earned dime they make on a terribly awful game mode that is solely there for the purpose of making $$$.
But for the rest of us, we sincerely hope that someone out there(preferably some1 with a whole lot of $$$) finally listens to SOFTDRINKTV and actually makes a good football game.

I started playing Madden back in Madden 99 because my brother got a copy for Christmas. I was 8 and it blew me away. A few years later, I bought Madden 04... the one with Vick on the cover. I then bought the game every year, except 06, a ton before they quit making it for PC after 08. Fast forward to Madden 11, I had broke down and bought a PS3 because all my buddies had playstations, so naturally because I had something to play the newer Maddens again.
I was so, so disappointed in that game. I tried to like it, believed I had to like it, but I just couldn't ever really get into it. It felt like a lesser game but I wrote it off as being older and playing it on a different system than what I was used to. However, every once in awhile I'd see one of my buddies playing Madden and it looked like crap, and in about 2015 I re-installed my copy of Madden 08 and enjoyed the hell out of it. In fact, I still play it on and off and it's genuinely a good game.
Anyway, end of my long story... I watched this game turn into absolute shit in my time with it. As for my buddies, almost all of them got bored with it too eventually except a couple, who buy it and play it some despite admitting the game is shit compared to what it used to be.
EA is more concerned about keeping its exclusive NFL rights than it is about making a good game. They know that as long as they are the only ones with it, they will always sell games. Honestly, at this point, I don't think EA could make a good Madden game though even if it wanted to, that's how bad EA has been for 10+ years now.
I'll say this, Madden 19 was so terrible, I actually enjoyed it.

What still pisses me off about modern maddens (18, specifically) is that when you play a slightly older madden, like madden 25, it feels like a breath of fresh air somehow. Even though it’s not one of the older games with all the crazy features, like on PS2, it’s still got so much more in gameplay and modes than recent maddens.
I feel like you could make a whole series like this about the MLB The Show games.

This is hilarious! I never experienced any of these glitches, but now I want to go back and play and see if I do. I have it for PS4. The funny thing is, this is only the second Madden game I ever bought and thought that they seemed to run slow, but I figured, what do I know, it's only my second Madden game. My first was Madden 13, the one you say killed Madden😆. Great video, and at least I know it ain't just me when I feel I'm experiencing mediocre football games.

Totally agree. I got a Xbox 360 for Christmas 2014. And the first madden I got was 13. I remember going into 13 from madden 12 on the ps2 and I was angry at what EA did to one of my favorite games. I do like MUT but you are completely correct about it being a cash grab. It didn’t used to be as bad as it is now but greedy EA. I wish we could make EA fix Madden but I don’t think we can.
