John Madden Football was the first ever Madden title. It lacked an NFL license, but it was still revolutionary. A true simulator of pro football, the game initially released for the Apple II in 1988, and was then slightly upgraded in 1989 for MS-DOS and Commodore computers. In 1990, a new version of the game was built from the ground up for the Sega Genesis and eventually the SNES, although this version leaned much more towards the arcade side. However, the game was easier to play and more accessible, leading to a long and storied videogame franchise.

Fascinating video. I had no idea about the computer version being completely different. I loved all the Madden games on the Genesis (Mega Drive over here in the uk). The NFL wasn't available on TV here in the UK for me as a kid. Its because of Madden I learnt what football was. I knew Madden before I ever saw my first game on TV! It's because of Madden I leant to love the NFL. Such a shame the way the Franchis has gone. Where have all those ideals that John insisted on at the beginning? Watch this video EA and learn. I must be kidding myself no think they ever would...

John Madden will be missed. I'm glad of this retrospective of the first one and it seems like this is the one to start it all though I don't mind games
being challenging or hard.
His legacy will withstand the test of time as millions soon were exposed to football.

It only got a brief mention, but Strat-O-Matic football is legit. If you want to simulate an NFL game, I don't think you can do it better than Strat. The baseball version is the GOAT (and way better for solo play) but playing Strat football against another player is elite.
Man I’ll tell, Madden thinking it’d be a great tool to teach the game of football was right. I learned a ton about the game of football by playing the Madden Series. I lot of my football knowledge has to be credited to this game series. Had it not been for Madden wanting it to be a game about 11 on 11, and giving his knowledge to the series, I may not know as much

I am thankful he at least was alive to see Madden be very good on the sixth generation of consoles and compete against NFL 2K and NFL GameDay (and NFL Fever too though that didn't last until EA bought the NFL rights), before EA started being complacient and lazy with their exclusivity.

I'm really happy to say that John's hope of educating people through the computer game has actually worked out. Outside of America, many people first make contact with American football through Madden, and it taught me enough of the game to understand what I was watching when I saw my first actual game.

Thinking about it Madden fit right at home on Genius with Sega and there sports game's they supported big time.
I remember growing up I would go to my Uncles place and he had a demo of the PC Madden game.
( It wasn't this one though It must have been the second one at that time and really tricky to play with just a keyboard. lol)
But even then with that demo it was really tricky to score the touchdown. lol Such a wonderful time.

Yeah I started with the C64 version in '89. It was one of my favorite games along with Earl Weaver baseball.
I kinda remember the computer game in a store the box was big and him smashing like in the beer spots. However it was a big deal with me on the Genius. Played other game's on the master system like Walter Peyton and great FB. Plus other's on the genius like Mike Ditka Sega sports FB and Montana. But Madden was tops. The second one on the Genius with the ambulance was the stand out so much fun!

Also there is a brief history about the Apple II version of John Madden Football in the Video game Invasion documentary from Game Show Network or GSN where they mentioned about the hardware limitations of the Apple II and the challenges of making a 11 on 11 football game with for a system that had only 64K of RAM.

Tecmo Bowl Pioneer that lane as well, with even 11 players. Tecmo Bowl first to have fumbles, injuries. But when madden really hit big it made Techmo bowl look cartoonish after awhile. Madden was real deal...

….what I got from this video though is that the Madden brand is so far away from the original idea of legit simulation football. Hopefully one day we’ll actually get that in the modern day. Until then my favorite Maddens will always be 04, 05 & 12.
I really do feel Madden's coaching career was overlooked for too long; he truly knew what he was doing, which is why he had such staying power as an analyst. That being said, I never cared much for these early Madden games ("Madden '97" is the first one I truly liked, and that game had flaws with the running game. I feel the series didn't really take off until "Madden 2000"), and would still stick with any & every Tecmo (Super) Bowl game.

You should do a series of doing all retrospects on every madden
The main thing that holds the game back from being playable today is the fact you don't just need to know football but also know how to use old computers. I started on Windows 98 which in comparison is a fairly modern OS which does create a bit of a learning curve. I remember trying to review it but it was back when I was in middle school so it didn't turn out good and idk if the video is even still up

It's unfortunate EA just focuses on the cash rather than give us a product worthy of the Madden name. Here's to hoping to they do a fitting tribute by producing a game that actually does the game justice....but I think we know better.

Honestly EA needs to stop with the scummy antics they’re up to with new madden games going forward. Basically just spitting on johns grave if they continue down the road they’re on. Madden currently is not a simulation football game, it’s bs to get peoples money. At the very least, make madden a great game. Make it a true simulation football game, add features back into the game that need to and should be there and just make it a compelling package for anyone to get into. Then add things to MUT and make extra money that way.
Edit: or remove the madden name if making a great game is too difficult. Just call EA Sports NFL
