You are correct about the need to have a dashcam. I was in a minor fender bender last week. The police officer asked the other driver what happened, and they were liberal with the truth. I just showed the dashcam, and the other driver was cited. The best dashcam is the one in your car!
Well put! Sorry about the fender bender, but thank goodness you had a dashcam!
Yup best insurance around. Had a similar issue a couple years ago where their insurrance didn’t want to pay until they reviewed with the other driver. I said no problem, I can send the video. End of discussion, they paid.
Amen Bobby
@@hammer-rexactly. Has the same issue 5 years ago when I had a cheap dash cam, but it did justice for me and Allstate who was trying hard to make me liable. When all was said and done I got 💯 percent of damages paid and supposedly that Allstate adjuster was disciplined after I reported her.
@@hhova29 great to hear that. Yea you gotta watch your ass all the time. No end to those who try to circumvent the truth. Money well spent.
You need to teach courses on how to make 'Review Videos'. Clear concise and complete information, you talk at a good speed, the demonstrations are pertinent, and your Link/Indexing is perfect. Great video, just what I needed. Thank You.
Amazing links description and I didn't even get to watch the video, very useful and cuts down on time to sift thru the video. Thanks
Great quality review! Super helpful for dash cam shopping
Love your video style: timestamps, summarization at end. Keep it up!
I've been using the 139pro front & rear since Feb 2021 and haven't had any problems with it. The review here is spot on.
I really appreciate your time and effort for the videos! You give great reviews and I have been very happy with everything i have researched and ultimately bought!!
Installed a Viofo A139 Pro 3 CH for my dad suv a couple weeks ago. That thing is a beast. The quality is so good.
Lots of helpful info, thanks!
Yet another great guide. Thanks!!
The BOX unit is almost exactly what I have been waiting for. If only it could do 4k front.
I like the idea of securing the main brain separately from the camera heads. This also let's me keep the brain out of direct sun, which here in Las Vegas is a highly desirable feature.
Good informative video. Thank you. Good luck with your youtube channel.
Will definitely be keeping an eye out for more info on that U3000...
I REALLY wish the Blackvue box one's video didn't suck so bad.
Excellent review. Thank you
I kept waiting for your windshield to crack when you were hitting it :) I drive those same roads in mill creek, 405 and highway 9 going into Snohomish and know all the trucks and traffic that kick up rocks to chip my windshield. Besides that I think you sold me on the Viofo 139.. been looking at it but have been on the fence. You're review was solid and gave other options if I was looking for my dashcam to do extra things. The Viofo is in the upper end but not the top and with the new Sony starvis 2 sensor for me it's the best option.
Another great review vlog. I wanted to ask a question about the direct to window mounts as those make up a good portion of your reviewed cams. What is the general amount of time that the direct to window mounts hold up due to UV exposure of the glue holding them on the window? I don't think I have seen any info on this subject and what some of your recommendations are for reattaching the mount when it falls off due to the UV exposure. I use a Blendmount holder for my Blackvue so this is not an issue, but in the event, I explore some other cams, I was wondering what the long term mounting options there might be....thanks again for a great vlog.
Totally need it to even if it’s just the front. My Blackvue saved me against a pedestrian that suddenly ran across the street even though I rolled over his foot
6:01 This is this first time your videos have crossed my feed. While watching I started recognizing the general environment and then several of the local highways. I live above the Costco at the South end of the highway at that time marker. Howdy neighbor!
I already own a couple A119 v3s, so I'll keep your channel in mind the next time I'm upgrading.
✌️
lol howdy neighbor!
Very well done video. Been looking for a well thought out, tested, and explained video. Thank you
Love these videos. Also in Washington so It was cool seeing you drive in similar areas I've been around 👍
You’re a stalker

These videos are SO helpful, thanks!! I had a question about the interior camera of the A139 Pro. Is it possible to have the interior camera only active during parking mode, and not active while driving? I'm about to pull the trigger on it but I don't like the idea of the interior being on all the time but it would be great to have it during parking mode. Thanks!
ETA: I saw your tip about pressing and holding the button to turn off the interior camera and that's great! Do you know if that is a persistent mode change or if you will need to turn off the interior camera each time you get back into your car?
My biggest complaint about the U1000 is the mounting solution. Their unique plate while clever is a PIA. I don't want a sticker attached to my windshield for a multitude of reasons so I had to fabricate a suction cup mount, still not a fan. I haven't seen anyone like blendmount take a chance or create an alternative to combine like some of the other cams/radar configurations.
Finally purchased the A139Pro 1CH just waiting for it to be delivered. going to get another 1Ch version for the rear soon later god willing
Thank you for the video. Very informative. I am really sad that Blackvue is back sliding when they have been pioneers in dashcam industry. Is the issue coming from top company management or RND division. I wish they can pull up the socks. Some of us have been loyal 😊😊
Hi Thanks for the info's . @Vortex Radar , where do you put the Viofo 129 Pro Duo on your top? and maybe some more particularities about it. Thanks again
Good review! Have you ever try the Ddpai Mini5? I installed one on my rear windshield, comparing to the blackvue 750, the Ddpai is surprisingly providing pretty good picture quality, almost as good as blackvue!
Great video! Thanks!
The multiple reviews you did with the A139 Pro pretty much sealed it for me when getting my first dash cam. Ended up getting the 2CH from their main website. Really appreciate it too with the discount code 🤙🏽.
how you going so far?
I have bought 2 BlackVue dash cameras in a row but now that I’m looking for an upgrade, I’m not sure I’ll go with the 970X based off your reviews. I’m extremely disappointed they didn’t opt for the new Sony Starvis 2 sensor.
This is the greatest in-depth detail of dash cams I have ever seen on CZcams and I've had a dash cams over the past 12 years. The best video I've ever seen thank you for this
I'm going to be honest, I'm really waiting for that review on the thinkware u3000. Already have the u1000 in one of my cars and I love it, and I almost got the new a139 pro for another car until you released that teaser clip for the u3000. Now I got to wait for your review. Don't worry, notifications are turned on LOL.
Got mine installed a few days ago, i've been having trouble getting rear radar working properly though(inconsistent and slow). Hopefully its fixable through firmware update. One can only hope.
I have purchased (5) AZDome M550 with 3 Cameras. Have been working flawless and a lot easier on the wallet.
Thank you vortex, very cool
Thank you for your great video reviews. I have watched many of them and even your 4 channel system you made yourself. I have an upgraded BMW X5 SUV and a BMW 3 sedan that already has heads up display and side mirror cameras and rear/front cameras, but they are only used for parking assist and lane change assist or finding your car in a garage. They did not have dashcam or parking video capabilities. Like most people with higher end cars, everyone complains about people keying their side car doors and side panels or dinging them with shopping carts. The 2 channel systems you review just are not sufficient for recording this. I need a system like the thinkware or blackvue or Viofo that have buffered parking and motion detection features but would also have the exterior side cameras to add. I contacted Blackvue and Thinkware and neither has this. I would think most people who have nicer cars would want a full 4 channel dashcam similar to the Tesla Sentry system. Any recommendations?
Nice review, plenty of information. wondering, what are your thoughts on the vantrue element line of dashcams?
Up to this point they’ve been close, but no cigar. Their latest models coming out now look better though.
I have the Viofo 129 with a Samsung 256GB Pro Endurance card. One in each of 2 cars. It seems that the camera likes to skip recording things here and there and I was thinking it was a bad camera, but now it looks like it may be the brand of card.
I’ve seen the 360 set up with the blackvue you made but which dashcam do you recommend for survaliance like the waylens 360?? Or what do you recommend that has excellent night and park mode? What do you think about the hupejos?
Do you have recommendations for a 2 channel (front/rear) for a convertible?
Are there any where the rear camera can be used externally?
Id like to experiemnt with the Blackvue Bluetooth button and see how i can make my horn button trigger the button.
When something happens, my usual first instinct is to honk the horn. Might be something i want to create is having the horn also trigger the button!
What software do you use to zoom in and clear up the license plates on your video? A still or a moving car? I just got a dash cam and the Vantrue app doesn’t have those features. Do you use iMovie or Final Cut Pro to do that, or what other software?
Thank you for the great video. I want to buy them all, but I would like to start a CZcams channel with me and my car driving the 50 states. Do you have the best for road trips? Thanks!
Hi if possible would like to see a comparison of the Viofo A139 pro vs the new Venture Nexus 5 that also got the new Sony Starvis Senser cause it haves one benefit more that it has a LCD screen Thanks
Are there any solutions for rear facing dashcam modules for pickup trucks? I can't put one on my back window because I have a soft topper, then if the bed has a lot of items, there won't be a view to record. Possibly a rear license plate bracket mount?
To get good quality front and rear recordings it sounds like you have to get two of the camera's. What about required cloud connections? Can you use the dashcam without every connecting to the cloud?
What's the best camera for an area like Texas where its very hot, where it doesn't overheat or fall iff?
You’ve got a new subscriber I’m not one to just sub or comment but this video did it for me !
Welcome aboard!
great vid
Great video, I appreciate your research. Regarding the Viafo A139 that you recommend, do I need to buy any wiring that does not come in the box for a front / rear setup?
The only thing might be the hardwire cable if you want a clean and permanent install. That and a memory card. Otherwise it has what you need in the box.
Always good reviews, can you review the rove 2r 4k pro dash cam?
Thank you.
It’s a 2K dashcam falsely advertised as a 4K model.
@VortexRadar thank you I almost bought it.
very informative! I am looking to add a dash cam and this video gave me some great guidance!
I have a follow up question, however. to get a more in depth idea of where to go. My car is garaged kept and I work from home and i've never owned a dash cam before. But I don't think battery packs are needed for me. But I do want the top of the line in security and cloud based, couple that with the highest resolution quality. Based on those 3 parameters, would you suggest me going with BlackVue box with the smaller cameras?
Yeah if cloud is a priority, the Blackvues are the clear winner right now. They're releasing a 4K version of the box version at the beginning of next year. It's not out yet, but you can learn more about what to expect here: czcams.com/video/Xx4RksCSl9k/video.html
Is the VIOFO A229 duo good camera to use in florida hi heat???
I'm thinking about the viofo mini 2, do you know if all of the cams work with those universal OBD USB c cable to power the unit?
What about dashcams that have a water resistant rear license plate cameras for individuals with dark rear tinted window? What recommended options do we have then?
Just ordered the pro with no additional cameras for now. Great discount, Tks Vortex. I assume I can add the second camera down the road if needed. Had no luck with the Garmin mini so hope this one is better.
Ah nice, congrats. Yeah Viofo sells the interior and rear cams with cables as standalone options in case you wanna add them on later.
Funny about the Garmin Mini. I just had another comment about someone raving about theirs.
@@VortexRadar it was a nice concept for a small form factor and price. But I had two of them ( in succession ) thru Amazon and both would not stay connected to my iPhone 14. So back they went. Hoping for better with this one.
I was really tempted to buy the mini 2 you recommended but I’m thinking of the better video and the possible addition of a rear camera in the future. So this one offers more flexibility.
One last question. Do they come with software to view on a pc so you can get gps data? If not what do you recommend. Tks. It’s ordered but coming from China, so it will take a while. Lol
I currently run the Nexar Beam. When I’m driving I connect to Apple CarPlay wirelessly, but with Nexar I have to be connected WiFi and Bluetooth but won’t be able to have CarPlay. With the nexar app it doesn’t show any video from the drive only the map from point A to B. Only way to pull video is to connect to a laptop/PC and it’s only 1 minute clips. Is there a Dashcam that records w/o disrupting Apple CarPlay and has an app that is able to store videos?
great review. i found that Q800pro is suitable for me but i need to know somethings!
i bought viofo then i return it. their app is pure perfection but their cams can't handle hot weather so is thinkware cams can handle that?
i bought blackvue & then i return it. their cams can handle hot hot weather but their app is a headache & with less features of the viofo app.
blackvue app issues are:
1- wifi always on (should be turned on\off by long press or separate button).
2- there is no button to save previous video as a protected event while driving.
3- GPS altitude & longitude not showing in the recorded video.
4- i can't delete protected events because it start reserving storage over time, i have to format the whole storage card!
so does thinkware app have those issues?
Great video as always. What are your thoughts on motorcycle cameras? I looked at all your old clips but most are pretty old. In my experience, most bike riders are very careful riders. So it would be nice to have a small decent but reasonably-priced camera for evidence. My brother went with Go-Pro but I'm not a big fan. Something that you can ball mount.
When will the larger sensor (from 1”) more expensive dashcam be around? Using a good action cam seems to make more sense these days.
I have had very bad experiences with viofo, in a couple of my cars they have caused a lot of electrical interference with the cars electronics. Causing my tpms sensors to go wild, my blind spot monitoring system to flash uncontrollably, and very very loud electrical noise. The high pitch noise electronics make. No matter what I tried to make it work it still continued to mess with my car. I don’t think I could ever use viofo again.
*this vid is a whole documentary sh,t wooow*
man thanks 😳🔥
lol, glad you enjoyed it!
$200 is maximum I would pay. Some 1080 cams now have newer sensors onboard for great PQ. I have a 2CH and it’s saved me so many times in NYC
The VIOFO Mini 2 should be your Huckleberry!
Major questions, built in battery vs hardware vs cigarette lighter, wifi 4g, 5g, 2.5 vs 5ghz vs Bluetooth to cell. My 3rd Cam is going back to amaz. Im assuming $250 is lowest price you can go on 3 channel, inside is really the only camera i want, for safety side job
The Thinkware Ivolt battery pictures show no support for an external extra battery pack, however the manuals for it shows an external battery port and the wiring diagrams also show connection to external battery. very strange.
@vortex radar - I can't find any review done by your channel on Nextbase dashcam and even more surprised that you don't mention it to be one of the best dashcams (622gw) available
Are the Viofo easy the remove and hide in the give box?
Hi there great channel and info,,, question viofo how well does app handle same a229 duo but in 2 cars ??? One or 2 phones ok ??
I’ve had good lunch using one phone to use a variety of Viofo’s whether it’s different cams in different cars it even multiple cams in one car for testing. You do sometimes need to restart the app if jumping straight from one cam to another, but in general it’s pretty good.
Almost purchased the viofo until i read the comments on the app in the playstore.
Really is a minefield trying to buy dashcams.
Have had a blackvue 750x for a couple of years but was looking for something with more features. Perhaps best to keep it simple and stick with blackvue in newer model ?
Any opinion.
Thanks for the review
I have been running a Viofo129 Duo for several years now. Never had any problems with it. It just keeps working. I am also still running a Mobius dash came next to the Viofo. It still works so why not have a back up camera. I would consider upgrading to the Mobius 2K duo if I could use the existing cables.
After 3 months of research, Viofo seems to be the best quality dashcam in the market right now. So I got myself a A119 mini 2 (the latest viofo camera with Gen 2 sensor) for experiment. 1) The 2k video is so very clear. 2) 3 minutes record is 550MB, takes 3 minutes to download @2.4GHz. Luckily it has the new 5GHz Wifi which reduce the download time to under a minute. I guess it is going to be the camera of the year again, just like the a119 v1.
I have the A129 and the 4K quality is fantastic. I’ve got videos on my channel from the different things I do with it and it works well. Great camera for an affordable price.
Did you get the 64GB microSD? If so, do you think thats good enough or would you recommend me getting the 128GB card? I plan on getting the A129 Plus Duo if that helps. Thanks :)
@@josegdelgado112 1) A129 Plus Duo / Quad is the old model with a 2k front cam and a 1080 rear cam, different from the a129 Pro which has a 4k front cam. Please note the different. 2) A 2k cam+1080 rear cam should use ROUGHLY 1GB per 5 minutes of recording with audio. A 64GB card can give you roughly 300 minutes, or 5 hours, recording time. Note if you tune down the recording format, the file can be smaller and the recording time longer. 3) If you spend 2 hours in traffic everyday, the video will last 2 and a half days before it overwrites itself. 4) Remember to get the High Endurance card instead of the normal card. 5) I have an 128GB card because it was the most cost efficient card at that moment. A129 Plus Duo support up to 256GB.
@@egaskrad Thanks alot for the information!
I would love to see a review of the Vantrue N5-G 4 Channel WiFi Dash Cam if possible. It seems to be a really nice Dash Cam with great speck's.
I’ve had one on hand for a while and will get to it eventually. No ETA though. It’s still back in my queue.
hi, I'm looking for a camera that films from and to the back and mosque, also to the left and right, as well as data from odb2, e.g. accelerator and turn signals, brakes and engine % and errors with error codes and cpl og cloud
Hi Vortex.
We are doing for dash cam installation service. We have some problem with Viofo A139p 3ch .
Its over heating issue and hardwire fuse burn out issue.
Do you have any same issue reported ?..
When touching dash cam main body .. its not warm its hot!!...
And replace two times replace the fuse because the dash cam not turns on..
It appears that Amazon doesn’t have the A1119 mini 2 yet/out of stock? Also, i have a 2017 Tahoe with CarPlay. There are 2 USB plug in at front of console and another 2 inside the console. You can plug iPhone into either to connect. Question is: if there is a DashCam plugged into one of the USB outlets will it interfere with CarPlay connection? Does anyone know? Thanks.
Purchased the a139 pro and i was able to connect and view videos on my phone when i installed it. Since doing the firmware upgrade, i can connect to my phone but when i go to review videos it lags out and wont let me view them. You should do a proper firmware upgrade video.
I’m writing this at the 16:52 mark so my query may be answered later in the video. My question is, so far I haven’t heard anything mentioned about any of the dash cams operating temperature range. I currently have the Vantrue N4 3 channel dash cam here in Southern California and quite often when I get to my car on a really hot day, and we have quite a few of those, my dash cam won’t work until the AC has had time to cool it down. The LCD screen will just be completely black, sometimes for 20 minutes or so. So, it would be great to know the temperature range of these dash cams.
This, exactly. I'm in Las Vegas, so this is my biggest concern.
Great points I wish many would talk about that
The Viofo have this problem too, though it has a capacitor it runs extremely hot and stops recording when it gets too hot. The sticky tape that came with the dashcam melted during a hot day when not parked under shade.
Warning for Viofo users: I have the 129 Pro Duo (4k front and 1080p rear) system. There's no possible way to run the rear dash cam cable that will not interfere with the tire pressure monitoring system on a GMC or Chevy truck 2019 and newer. I have no idea why it interferes, but if you unplug the rear dash cam at the front dash cam suddenly your TPMS system works perfectly. Maybe they need better shielding on the camera cable. As for the video, and as always, thanks for the time and detail you put into everything you post!
Interesting! I don't think I've heard anyone report that issue before. Thanks for sharing. I run a Viofo in my car and my wife's car and it's been fine, but as always with this stuff YMMV.
Although I haven't tried the camera you have on your vehicle, that is a very common thing that occurs in newer vehicles. I work for Mazda Corp & we have had multiple vehicles that have that issue where the dashcams interferes with other radio signals, creating weird effects such as tpms & or keyless malfunction on the dashboard. Technical service bulletin is SA-075/22
Glad I have an older car.

Hi
I have Mazda CX8, does this vehicle have any issues with dashcams, interfering with it's radio and keyless entry key fob?
The box idea has got to be the way everything goes.
New subscriber here, do you have any videos or links to installing front/rear cameras? TIA
Welcome! Yep, I did a front/rear dashcam install video here: czcams.com/video/yWODoPNGCdk/video.html
Viofo also came out with the WM1 2k dashcam!
Yep! They have lots of models, lol. I talked about the WM1 here: czcams.com/video/arYk1ev9GVg/video.html
I've been watching your reviews for the past 10 years. I still hope that you are completely impartial when reviewing... and that your not getting paid to give good reviews on a particular device.
I own a BMW 850i xDrive 2022... and the space is limited under the mirror. I want the best overall... and I'm still confused between the Viofo, the Thinkware and the Blackvue. The price of it doesn't matter... but a high price sometimes doesn't mean it's better. Thank you Vortex. Mario from Montreal (Quebec).
Correct. I don’t do paid reviews and that’s a personal line I will never cross.
I hear you with the confusion. Nothing ticks every box so it’s up to you to decide what’s most important to you and choose accordingly.
Would love to see a review of the fitcamx.
I talked about it a bit here: czcams.com/video/vKqPGaRpfkQ/video.html
Somehow the viofo 139 pro i have doesn’t record while im driving. The down side of this camera is it doesn’t override. I have to keep formatting my memory card. The sd card gets full with 4 to 5 days. Any tips and tricks of setting i can set is much appreciate.
What is the best reverse camera?
Ariel, many moons ago you said you would be reviewing the M2 by Escort. I have it and it is a very handy dash cam as it easily connects physically and electronically to my Redline 360c. Do you still have plans to review it?
Oh yeah, still on the long list lol. I'm thinking about doing some shorter overview type videos to try and get through stuff that's been on the backburner for ages. Comprehensive reviews take so much time!
@@VortexRadar I just got a bada-bing. I thought I was going to get $120 for my Max 360 trade in from Escort when I bought my Redline 360c but when I checked my CC statement, I only was refunded $80. I thought that since I bought it in August of 2021, it wouldn’t be considered “older”. It turns out that anything not currently sold on their site is considered “older”. If I had read those terms before sending it back, I would have just kept it and sold it on Marketplace or something. They don’t even give you a return label. It cost me $23 to FedEx it back, so I only netted $57. I’ll never do that again. It might be something to mention on one of your videos.
Hello guys
Is it worth buying Nextbase 622GW dash camera?
For the purposes related to road situations there's no better solution than two lens camera like Cansonic UltraDash Z3 Standard Edition. Telephoto lens captures details perfectly while wide angle one gives overall view. Tele lens is way better solution than tweaking a sensor and enlarging image size.
My wife's new car does not have a cigarette lighter connection, there is however a c type connection next to the rear view mirror that could be used for dashcams. I guess my question is, which cameras do you know are powered by c type wires? Thanks, I'm in Canada btw.
Does U1000 wifi stay ON even during parking mode?
While the following product is not for the majority of your audience, I’d like you to review and compare it for features, quality, cell transmission, etc
The product designed is for “larger than cars”
Stonkam 360 Birds Eye
Personally the externally mounted cameras, is the attraction for me
Another feature I look for is a map GPS coords data logger. So you can say I was here, when this happened, and my speed was logged.
About 15 years ago I was very impressed with D-TEG and how it also incorporated brakes, turn signals, lights, or auxiliaries you decide to wire in to be logged (in addition of course to the GPS logging)
Personally, I’m not interested in the camera system that requires a huge external screen that I have to install in my car. If you’d like to test and review it, I’d be happy to check out your video.
@@VortexRadar I get that. Thanks for response.
25:25 That was so cool.
Did you test parking mode for the A139 Pro? Saw another review where it didn't work very well at all. Looks good otherwise but that's an important component for me.
Of course. See the full review here: czcams.com/video/iHrv-YWQS7g/video.html
I would like to run 2 dash cam setup (one 3ch like the Blackvue BOX) and the other single chanel like the Viofo Mini, is that going to put too much stress on the 12v charging system? I drive a Hybrid vehicle and I'm planning on using a batery pack for the Blackvue as well.
That should be fine
Thank you. I will order using your code. BTW, for the Box setup is the cabin/interior cam able to record in color if lighting is appropriate? Such VIOFO IR? Or it will be always in “night mode” grey-ish footage. Do you know that ?
The new a119 mini2 has the new 2nd gen sony sensor?? That sounds like a really big feature. Have u noticed a big performance increase in low light and night driving in the mini2 vs the mini1? How about the mini2 vs the a139 at night? I know one is 4k and the other 2k, but besides that.
I was just about to pull the trigger on a a129+, but i think id rather have the better low light performance than a rear channel.
Can you recommend a dashcam that is powered by USB Mini? I currently have a dashcam that is about 7 years old, 1080P. I want to upgrade to a 4K but I do not want to remove and re-install the hardwired cable currently run for it. It is a USB Mini. I am having a hard time finding one. Please and thank you.
I still really like my Vantru X4s
What are your reviews on the nexar and the corba dash cam with Alexa
Not my cup of tea
Great informative video. I just purchased the Viofo A229 Duo. Got a prime day deal for $179
You said in another video that you use (2) 2 channel cameras to capture 360 deg around your vehicle. What video do you show this or explain what cameras and how you have it set up?
Yeah it’s explained here: czcams.com/video/gSFxqHrF2Ro/video.html
I still do it, but now with newer versions of those models.
Man, 2023 and I still feel like there are no perfect dashcams. The remote box is definitely the way these manufacturers need to go, but support 4k for all cameras (at least 5x 2k cams). Put a real SOC in that box and have all the nice features. Use AV1 encoding for efficiency, active cooling, HDR, 5G.... check all the boxes. each dash cam seems like there is a tradeoff from another. where is the flagship?
😂 buy all three then
Maybe before you put a video up on the best you look at the issues that being a ton of wires etc
Maybe rethink and revisit after looking into FITCAM X which its completely OEM looking
The cables are basically hidden when installed. The FitCam we discussed here: czcams.com/video/vKqPGaRpfkQ/video.html
