I beg to disagree re:keto. As a vegetarian and with yrs of total struggle with meno, endo, constant experimenting with food to fix me, as doctors were useless, including going vegan at one point, intermittent fasting and keto combo significantly impacted my health for the better. I'd go by what works for each one of you. If vegan significantly helps you, go with it.

But you’re not talking about how estrogen makes us feel young, strong, resilient, -almost over night my bones and joints became creeky, stiff, sore and weaker. Brain fog set in and my memory went to nothing. I’m normally a high functioning woman, matriarch of my family, still raising two teens, working and caring for my dad. I feel like an 80 year old at 53. This is not normal. So while it’s great that I don’t make babies anymore I certainly don’t feel like my body’s protecting me. Awesome, Amy! Yes, at almost 55, I had no hot flashes when eating some animal foods (minimal, really) but whenever I went 100% whole food, plant based, they come back raging. Don't know why except maybe something to do with DHEA production. BUT! I LOVE eating whole food, plant based, as I find I have more energy, look and feel much younger and all inflammatory markers go down. So I'm experimenting with just one hard boiled, organic, pasture raised egg/day to see if it helps. If not I'm going to likely have to add more animal foods. Also I do exericse (that helps A LOT!) and I love the idea of fasting one day a week, and yea God!! Jesus is our healer, praise Him! Hallelujah!!

Now post-menopause they are less intense and less frequent. However I never had much mood swings, night sweats or any other discomfort. Just begin honest.

I've been plant based for over 2 decades with a bit of slip 7years ago and have had mainly night sweats as my perimenopause symptom. Maybe other factors play a more significant role than diet with regards to this. I'm so obsessed with learning more! 😀

    • @beth5247
      @beth5247 Před 5 lety +4

Seska Lee, maybe my hot flashes would be much worse if I ate meat and dairy. I know women who have never had a hot flash or night sweats and eat the standard American diet. And other vegans who have hot flashes and/or night sweats.
The hypothalamus controls our body temperature and plays an important role in hormone production. So may have something to do with progesterone too, I don’t know much about that. I do know when I took Prozac after my husband died the hot flashes were gone! Other SSRI drugs also cool the beast! But not good in the long term.
Diet does effect the hypothalamus gland but a WFPBD will not get rid of hot flashes completely with all women.
These studies maybe just taking a menopausal woman off a standard American diet on putting them on a WFPB and see the magic unfold. Nothing wrong with that.
Study up on food the hypothalamus too. Omega 3 foods and Vit C foods are great. I will do the same :).

Beans/Legumes are highest fiber food and are best for ridding your body of excess hormones. Fruit is actually low fibre.

I love dr Barnard too! He explains things clearly and accurately and he supports a healthy diet where vegetables and fruit play a very important role. Let's try to reduce red meat dramatically but also white meat fish and diary products. Our environment will benefit too, not only our health!

Sigh...I've been following a whole-foods based diets for years. I am 62 now, weighing what I did in high school. I eat a VERY healthy vegan diet, no oil, no sugar, no caffeine. You'd think I'd sail through menopause, not. I'm enjoying the no more cramps and tender breasts from having periods, but these hot flashes happen every afternoon throughout the entire evening. No fun. I'm even married to an OB-GYN, but he is also puzzled why I am always getting the hot flashes. No hormone replacements for me, as I have 2 beautiful sisters who have had breast cancer.

My doctor from the Philippines recommended a few spoonfuls of yams per day to avoid symptoms of menopause. I did it and had no symptoms! Yams work because they are a natural source of both estrogen and progesterone. When you eat yams, that supplies both hormones at a time when your body is no longer producing them. My menopause was uneventful because of yams. I baked a yam, mixed it with apple butter, and ate a few bites per day of that. I wish I had known about the health benefits of yams when I was a teen suffering heavy bleeding with my periods.

My journey with my period started around 16 ( some would say that was rather late nowadays) with cessation of my cycle last year at 55. Many of my girlfriends, still in their 40s had problems (tumors and endometriosis ) resulting in hysterectomies, which ended their cycles early on. I was apprehensive going into this stage of my life but am glad its done. Just like the monthly cycle of pre menstrual and post menstrual symptoms. Those issues were definitely more symptomatic than any issues I have currently. However it could be that I'm having an easier time because I became !00 percent plant based ( Vegan ) 5 yrs ago. Thanks for this informative video! Love you guys, and your work. Love to Dr. Barnard as well.

Triggars for me , situations that cause me anxiety or an ancious feeling, eating/drinking anything that is vinegary. Like wine, as soon
as I have the first sip, I have a hot flash within 30 seconds Same with my morning coffee, applecider vinegar. Hot beverages.
This leads me to sucpect it has something to do with the liver.
Ha as I'm typing this he started talking about the liver.

Menopause has more gravitas than “change of life” . Given the horrors that some of us go through it deserves to be taken seriously. Enjoying the food info.
