  • Recorded live at the Marlene Meyerson JCC, Neal Barnard, MD, discusses the science behind how foods affect our hormones-and our health. In his new book, Your Body in Balance, Dr. Barnard shares how common hormone-related conditions-like infertility, weight gain, menopausal symptoms, breast and prostate cancers, thyroid problems, and acne-can be affected by and improved by simple diet changes. Your Body in Balance is available now wherever books are sold!

So!!! I watched this video a week before my periods and decided to remove dairy (I've been vegetarian for 9 years but a bit obsessed with dairy) and see how it'll affect my cycle. Seriously, it's hard to believe but I had no pain, no cramps, no temperature and no bloating! The less painful periods in 20 years! Girls, you should try it!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroid 2016, was given medications. In 2018 after giving birth to my son I was diagnosed with Hypothyroid. My doctor could not understand how I had both high and low. I decided to go on a plant base diet. I stopped taking my medications and started my diet on December 1st 2019. On February 2020 my endocrinologist was very happy to tell me that my thyroid levels were normal. He stated “ Keep taking the medications they are working” Then I told the him, “I stopped the medication 2 months ago and started a plant base diet” The doctor looked at me and said “ oh no it’s not the diet, idk what it is but it’s not that, you can keep eating what you want. I didn’t listen to my doctor, I’m still on a plant base diet and I see him every 6months and he orders blood work and for over a year now my thyroid levels have been normal. Anyone who has been diagnosed with thyroid imbalance, trust Dr. Barnard go on a plant base diet.

I had a hormonal breast cancer and was not an avid dairy drinker/eater. I drank soy shakes twice a day and was very lean. I had preexisting uterine fibroids, worked 40hrs a week and travel every other weekend. When I traveled I would eat seafood and low fat diet. My diet at home/weekly is salads, chicken and rare beef but veges mostly and low carbs. And some low sugar dark chocolate!I clocked 6-9 miles of running weekly with two or three days of weight training.
I was 43 when this happen. No family history. My personal diagnosis was stress and mentally abusive relationship. Stress causes a women’s body to use it’s progesterone and changes it to stress hormones like cortisol or adrenaline. With no or very little progesterone your estrogen becomes carcinogenic. This issue caused my tumors, fibroids and breast tumor to grow in very obvious estrogen receptor sites. I even notice the swelling and reduction of them during my cycles. I was being pressured to have chemo!!!! I ended up having a excision of breast tumor and partial hysterectomy. Then as back up but probably didn’t need it had breast low dose radiation.
I dropped the soy shakes and only now eat pea protein shakes. I’ve changed nothing else. I drank milk heavily as a teen but now just a spit in the tea and yogurt/kefir 2 or so times a week. I alternate with egg omelettes w/veges. After the age of 25 I drank rarely. After the surgeries, To ease the early entry to menopause I applied biological hormones to protect my heart and bone density.
I’m cancer free for 8 yes now. Im still very active and eat what I want in moderation.
Food plays a role but only a woman knows that we have way too many jobs in a marriage and it is time for men to either realize the amount of work and stress we endure and honor stay at home moms or get real and take on 50% of the household/child rearing duties.
Women stop catering to men and take care of yourself. This includes taking time to build a separate social life/support group.
America needs to re-examine and redefine rolls w/o skewing our genders. All work is important and non-discriminatory in raising a family. Share the load people and get political to protect families and relationships. Don’t let economics and business dictate what is true and healthy.
Thank you for sharing your lecture. I agree there is definitely some business to be examined and messages to be put out in the public to save Americans if not the world from trash.

I watched Dr. Neal Barnard's video about vegan diet/less oils/no processed food/less sugar...after only one month of diet, my pain decreased so much, that in the second month of period, I had no pain at all. I was so happy I could not believe it was working. Now, after 2 years of veganism, I can honestly say, I will never go back to the old style of living and eating. I owe my healing to God who talked to me through Dr. Neal. I am so grateful for this video. Thank you so much. From the age of 14 years old I have always had severely painful long and heavy monthly periods, vomiting, diarrhea and a fever - went onto the pill to manage it. I'm 42, went vegan 6 years - I could finally leave the pill and endured for the first time PAINLESS AND SHORT menstrual cycles. ..... Then a month ago went for my first Covid jab and BAM!! - - I'm 14 again and bending over a toilet or curling up on the bathroom floor! Nobody is talking about this side effect - women's health is being ignored.

Wow. I thought I was the only one. I had crippling PMS - severe mood swings, insomnia, depression, anxiety and cramps starting two weeks before my period. I also had two or three days around ovulation during which I became irritable and anxious. Needless to say, it was ruining my life. I planned my life around my cycle, knowing that than half the month I’d struggle with concentration and even noise and light would trigger me. I went vegan 3 months ago, and I have NO PMS. It was effective immediately. My skin is no longer greasy. My hair has stopped falling out (another fun thing that I’d been struggling with) and my energy levels overall are so much better. I’ll never go back to eating animal products.

I have never been a big meat eater but I do love salmon, fish and cheese. I have given up salmon and ALL dairy now, and wondering, 'Is it a coincidence that I haven't been coughing all night like I usually do.' I have had sinus issues for ever and the last few nights I have not been waking up coughing! I'm also using this diet for my hormones. At 46 I feel like my PMS symptoms are getting worse. I'm hoping in a months time this diet has also helped with these symptoms. Not to mention the strong family history of heart disease. Since being on an IUD I have cramps EVERY SINGLE TIME (regardless of menstrual cycle) I eat fried chicken (1/month) or any amount of meat more than a slice of bacon. Serious cramps. I recognized the correlation and tracked it. My meat consumption is a significant factor in my felt inflammation. Being 85% plant based reducing to none is not difficult. It’s more annoying that people around me try to convince me “it’s in your head”. When I have cramps within 24 hours of eating meat it’s definitely real. This gives me validation. I knew it was the darn meat.

Kidneys work as filters in the body... I believe this is known. Too much protein processing or filtering will do a massive number on the kidneys.
Like several appliances we have at home, we need to clean out whatever filters it might have periodically.
What doesn’t seem to have to come to light for many people yet is, the ovaries and the kidneys work together.. it’s like a backup system. Testicles in men are also have renal connection.
So OF COURSE, going low on the proteins (and sugars) will definitely have a positive effect on inflammation and cysts connected to the female reproductive system generally. It even helps cure PCOS, which is a diabetic complication. For those ignorant people saying it’s all in your head, ironically their response proves it’s in their heads 😅

Do you have to add the biological word? Physics says we are electrical energy fields because atoms are electrical energy fields. We all consist of 7 billion billion billion atoms. We are not biological at all. We are alkaline just like a battery. Our bodies regulate us between 7.35 pH and 7.45 pH. These numbers are very close to the middle between alkaline and acidic.
Dr. Young has written a lot of books about how we must eat mostly alkaline foods. If we don't we go out of balance. Just like a battery. In the book Hands of Light written by the physicist Barbara Brennan are many pictures/diagrams of what we look like as electromagnetic, holographic, multidimensional and eternal beings. We can't die because we are constantly being created.
That is evident by the quarks that are constantly bursting forth spinning billions of times a second as 3 points of light forming protons and neutrons. These words are in the book The Quantum World written by the physicist Kenneth Ford.

I’m lactose intolerant and I really don’t like meat so going on a vegan diet was a no brainer for me. I was on my 6th month on the diet when people started telling me I look sick. I was feeling great and kept arguing with people that this is the healthiest possible diet on the Earth. I decided to do a blood work mainly to prove everyone how healthy my live choice was. I was so shocked and disappointed to see that I was wrong all along- red cells, white cells, hemoglobin, D vitamin, B vitamins ...you name it, they were all way under the normal range of a healthy person.. My blood results had never looked so bad. To make things worst , a week after the test I caught a flu and almost died (from a simple flu). I changed my diet immediately adding meat just 3 times a week and after three months my blood results were back to normal. Vegan is not for everyone. I think people should know that and this is the reason I am sharing my experience. Good luck and stay safe everyone

Absolutely love this lecture. I really appreciate Dr. Barnard and I know he is a very highly respected proponent of a Whole Food Plant Based diet. I just wish that in this lecture, he had mentioned that IF you introduce vegan junk food (like vegan Taco Bell) when you eliminate meat, eggs and dairy, it is important to remember that further dietary changes, (to eliminate vegan junk food and embrace a Whole Food Plant Based diet) will be necessary in order to achieve optimal health and healing. Just one more sentence about that, and this lecture would be perfect.

good comment: I take your point very well, but this very talk is the educational piece I'd missed when I went vegan a couple of years and went back because my health hadn't radically improved then: --> the missing piece was the added oils Yay!!! Back to veganism now and applying what Dr Barnard is telling us about the small particles of fat that most likely won't go away and will continue to keep our cells resisting insulin (especially in me an older person) who needed to really understand this. Mic the Vegan (CZcams) had told on his videos that oils were unhealthy, but I never heard the reason why. Dr. Barnard tells us why: that the use of magnetic resonance spectroscopy reveals the microscopic particles in our cells (pertinent to diabetes: muscle cells) blocking the entry of insulin ushering glucose into the muscle cells so they can be burned as fuel.

I totally agree. It’s the oil, salt & sugar in the processed vegan food. I got hooked on this food - the vegan sausages & burgers with oven fries but kidding myself it was still healthy as it was vegan plus I still had fresh fruit, salads & green smoothies. Oh & vegan dark chocolate, vegan red wine, gluten free, vegan breads & pastries & high protein vegan nut bars. The health issues came back plus some new ones & I gained over 30 lbs. I found any processed foods - vegan or not - are addictive & if I have them in the house I eventually eat them.

I have been on a plant-based diet for many years. It has helped tremendously with my health and autoimmune situation. I have recently started phasing out dairy. I didn't think I could do it but it has been getting easier. I love cheese! I also found that my autoimmune condition went into remission in the past when I was eating about 95% raw organic plant-based food.

Omg!! thank god I stumbled across your video. You are truly a life saver 💕 as I was listening to you speak I was thinking about so many people that are in desperate need of hearing your stories. I can't wait to share with several young women who are desperately trying to get pregnant and others who are suffering through so many different ailments. I found you quite humourous to listen to. 😁That's always a good thing!!
I loved your talk on the soy, as I used to take Soy for years but stoped taking it because I was told it was bad for you and could cause cancer. I really am shocked to hear that you were saying it is really good for you. I've been trying desperately to be vegetarian for at least a month now and I am now going to try to become vegan, my husband travels and has been away for about two months, so I have been mostly vegetarian for that time. I feel absolutely amazing and have no real issues ,I have lots of energy and I sleep really well.
My husband however is a major meat eater. It's going to be a challenge when he returns next week but I will desperately to get him to at least change a little in his diet. Thank you ,thank you ,thank you it's people like you that make the world a joy to live in. God bless you🙏 ps I can't wait to go out and get your book 💃💃💃💃
