HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE DEODORANT | Natural Deodorant REVIEW | ALUMINIUM FREE Deodorant

  • Homemade deodorants don’t have the best reputation - and for good reason! I researched several DIY deodorant recipes, and even tried a few including “how to make natural deodorant that works - 3 ingredients” spoiler alert: it didn’t work. But with increasing concern over some of the ingredients used in cosmetics and several studies suggesting a link between risk of breast cancer and aluminium deodorants - I wanted to seriously look into finding an alternative to deodorant and provide a fair natural deodorant review.

Just to be clear, I know there is a difference between homemade natural deodorant and homemade antiperspirant - but who in there right mind wants a natural deodorant that doesn’t work as an antiperspirant?! I’m judging this bentonite clay natural deodorant DIY on both it’s ability to fight against odour and absorb moisture.
For this Natural Deodorant Review I focused on 4 areas: “Assembly” covers the process of how to make homemade deodorant, “Application” refers to how easy it is to apply, “Cost” examines how expensive a DIY Deodorant Stick can be, and finally “Effectiveness” is the overall natural deodorant review to see how well it actually works.
My DIY Try It or Buy It Series aims to put natural DIY and homemade beauty recipes to the test to see if any of them actually work! You can check out my first review of Flaxseed Hair Gel here:

How to make homemade deodorant without baking soda
    Modified Recipe:
    • 1 tablespoons Coconut Oil
    • 1 ½ tablespoons Beeswax (for vegan version use Candelilla Wax)
    • 2 tablespoons Shea Butter
    • 2 tablespoons Bentonite Clay
    • 2 tablespoons Arrowroot Powder
    • 20 drops essential oil(s) of choice
The original recipe doesn’t make a vegan deodorant and also includes baking soda that is a known irritant and can be harsh on sensitive skin.
    How to make natural Deodorant:
    • 4 tablespoons Coconut Oil
    • 1 ½ tablespoons Beeswax (substitute as above for vegan deodorant)
    • 2 tablespoons Shea Butter
    • 2 tablespoons Bentonite Clay
    • 2 tablespoons Arrowroot powder
    • 1 tablespoon Baking Soda
    • 25 drops of Essential Oil(s)
I decided to try a homemade natural deodorant with bentonite clay recipe because bentonite clay deodorant are amazing at detoxifying your armpits. I tried to reduce the number of ingredients without sacrificing it’s effectiveness in order to make this DIY deodorant as easy to make as possible. Below are some of the benefits of making your own homemade natural deodorant:
Coconut Oil is antibacterial as well as antifungal, it’s usually a crucial ingredient in any DIY deodorant recipe as it also helps the deodorant to glide on easily and absorb into your skin.
Shea Butter is makes natural deodorants incredibly moisturizing which is usually pretty rare for conventional deodorants!
Baking soda helps to absorb moisture and eliminates odours. In my modified homemade deodorant recipe I left out the baking soda because it made the texture extremely gritty. Baking soda also can irritate sensitive skin. In order to do a fair natural deodorant review, I tried both recipes with and without baking soda and didn’t notice any difference in regards to how well the natural deodorant works so I would leave it out!
Beeswax can be easily substituted for Candellia to make this natural deodorant recipe completely vegan. Wax helps to make DIY deodorants solid so I would encourage leaving it in. Watch my full natural deodorant review for more on this!
Arrowroot powder helps the homemade deodorant wick away moisture and keep the skin dry.
Bentonite clay deodorants or any homemade deodorant with bentonite clay in addition to detoxifying, also absorbs excess moisture and eliminate odour.
Essential oils have different benefits depending on which one you choose, but they will all provide a pleasant fragrance to any natural deodorant recipe.

  • @bringthemesstv
    @bringthemesstv Před 6 měsíci +29

Tips- Instead of shea butter use cocoa butter, this will make it stiffer. Instead of arrowroot use kaolin clay to soak up sweat and gather toxins. Instead of coconut oil which is highly comedogenic use jojoba, hemp, rice, avocado or olive oil. Lime and bergamont essential oil is the best oils for deodorant. For those who deal with breast cancer or hormone issues or auto immune disease this recipe is much better and safer. As your body detox you will need to use it twice a day for 1 month to get use to it. Then after a while you will barely need deodorant. Although diet does play a part in your smell

It took a couple weeks for my body to adjust to my diy deodorant. I even use baking soda in mine and noticed a smell after 4-6 hours. Now that my body has adapted to this type of deo, I can’t go back to commercial brands.
Ive experimented with some different ingredients that make a nice solid stick with smooth flow. Cetyl alcohol and a small amount of castor oil were two awesome ingredients to add for conditioning. I don’t use any butters in mine currently. 28% beeswax keeps them solid where I live, even though almost half the recipe is coconut oil. Warmer climates may want to increase that a bit.
I like bentonite clay for what it does, but I have the same complaint as you- the graininess.

Betonite clay can not dry-out It must be wet at all times. The benefits Are this won’t cause you cancer or swelled lymph nodes. Or it would be a problem if it gets dry.
Great review. But we all just got used to the store bought things And those things are the reason all of us are looking for a natural solution. I have seen it being made in a crock pot. And it did work better. But the clays purpose is to draw out toxins.I had better success with olive oil. Like you I have had some good success. And it’s not like the store bought kind. But for me The benefits out weigh the cancers they cause. As my mother died from 4th stage Breast cancer And she used talc for over 60 yrs that I knew of. Now we know that was a cancer causing substance.
Good luck Keep trying Just remember show your success if you find a way !

I have made and used home.ade deoderant before and it works great BUT I believe it did stain my shirts. I had on black long sleeved and a light colored t-shirt over it( it was winter afterall) and thw black seeped through onto the white shirt. Totally ruined my looney tunes t-shirt (utterly upsetting😤) I do agree that it was probably the coconut oil that caused this. Plan on trying this without the coconut oil and just using butter (shea and mango) hopefully that will help. We shall see. Summer is here and it definitely won't take long to see how that would affect clothing and whether or not I get stinky.

    • @WholeElise
      @WholeElise  Před 4 lety +9

Turmeric's a great ingredient to add! It has been shown to lighten scars or areas of hyperpigmentation but I would recommend adding it to a mask rather than a deodorant. Turmeric stains EVERYTHING lol, so it will likely end up transferring on to your clothes. A lot of store bought turmeric powders aren't fine enough to blend smoothly into a product it might also give a kind of "grainy" texture to the deodorant. I'd recommend trying out the Turmeric bentonite clay mask for your underarms that I make in this tutorial: czcams.com/video/X-DJKkjcgX4/video.html
Hope that helps and thanks for watching 💚

Never add bicarbonate Soda to a Natural Deodorant as it will irritate the skin. The under arm is very sensitive.

Yes, that's a great idea. I was just thinking of trying it again with a different butter! In addition to being moisturising and helping with the texture of the deodorant, the butter also provides structural support so I wouldn't leave it out all together. But I definitely think substituting the Shea butter with a firmer one like cocoa or mango butter would help set the deodorant more 😊
