"You will own nothing and you will be happy."

In case you didn't know, the phrase "You will own nothing and you will be happy." was recently popularized by Klaus Schwab(a Bond villain candidate) at a recent World Economic Forum conference. While many beneficial things were implied, it was clearly a thinly veiled threat that the world's wealthiest are intent on causing such income disparity in the world so as to own everything, forcing you to toil forever in order to rent everything, thus seeding control over the lives of billions to the top 1%. This Great Reset will occur through a series economic collapses, which will benefit the mega rich whilst destroying the wealth of the working class. And as the US government(in particular) has been corporate captured, the tax payer will foot the bill for corporate losses and the wealthy investor class, as they seem to always do. Sound familiar? Bail out the banks and foreclose on the little guy so he owns nothing. Bail out the corporations, and close down all the Mom'n'Pop stores so they go out of business, and send out some measly checks (if you're lucky and you qualify). They want such poverty that you'll either be living out of the generosity of neighbors, dumpster diving, or so desperate you'll work several jobs at mega-corps for peanuts. And as you toil away at those mega-corps, pissing in bottles because you can't take breaks, just scraping enough money together to eat and keep a roof over your head, you'll surely be grateful for your overlords hiring you, and happy, despite them owning everything and you owning nothing. And then AI and the robots came.... Universal Basic Income can never happen, at least in the US, as they can't even provide the basics the rest of the industrial world has, like "Medicare for all", because every dollar the Government spends on helping the general populace is another dollar the wealthy can't get their greedy mitts on (at least not easily).

Minimalism works until you start a family.. then it becomes maximalism. The amount of stuff you need to raise 2 kids is mindblowing.
Great point, most "sleek" lifestyle design that young professionals aspire to completely break down once there are kids, toys everywhere, creature comforts, soccer equipment, and so forth everywhere with daily school you can't just skip to travel randomly. In that case, it may be worth just locking down for several years to enjoy the "settled life," or perhaps a mixture.

Owning things isn't always about "social status," it can be about stability. I've lived most of my life like you: owning very little, traveling a lot, and renting. Recently I've decided that I want to own a house so that I'm not subject to the whims of a landlord who has an enormous amount of power over me as a renter. Owning property can tie you down, but it can also mean freedom in a different way. Having my own little patch of dirt where nobody can tell me what to do seems pretty nice.
Yes landlords abuse their power and there is a great anxiety having them around. They bully their way through things. Landlords need to be cancelled.
@@mysterybuyer3738 That wasn't quite my point. I think renting serves a purpose sometimes and landlords are a necessary part of society. My current landlord happens to be a friend of mine, so it''s not so bad. But I'm still giving up some degree of control over my life by living here. I like building things and working on lots of crazy projects, but I can't exactly do whatever I want so long as I'm not the property owner. It kinda sucks.
@@charleschristianson2730 All I have had were very bad experiences with renting so any time I get a chance I tend to jump on them.
There are systems that tell you to pay more for housing supplies/labor; increasing insurance rates, taxes, HOA’s, etc.. No one escapes being told anything. There are many people who are delusional over housing ownership.
@@noreenebostick9593 🙄 I knew some genius was gonna come along and say something like this. Yeah, you're not allowed to murder someone on private property, either. That still doesn't mean you don't have a helluva lot more freedom to do whatever you want there, versus rented property.
And while we're at it, I would NEVER buy a house with a HOA, or even within city limits for that matter. Out where I live folks know how to mind their own business.

I`m 60 and don`t care about anything anymore. Just selling all my stuff and traveling and talking to interesting people, and seeing beauty where where ever I am. To quote our guru, TechLead, "we are all just dust in the wind." Be dust; light, mobile and a little dirty.

Correct. After having 3 vechiles I realized 1 is enough. After having 3 houses I realized 1 is enough. After having 3 girlfriends I realized 1 was enough and so on.
I wish i learnt most of these principles about seven years ago. A lot of people have been trapped strongly in the matrix-- Go to school, get a job, and then slave your whole life. Many miss out on life-changing information that could have great effect on their finances. I played with the stock market sometime in 2020, and I was surprised at how well it turned out. I want to put in $90k more into the market. I heard people are making really great returns despite the downturn. Any recommendations?
Avert too-good-to-be-true con tricks. Consult a fiduciary counselor; these professionals are among the best in the business and offer individualized guidance to clients based on their risk tolerance. There are undesirable ones, but some with a solid track record can be excellent.

You know you’re on the right path when everything you hear someone say in a video you’ve already said to yourself in self talk. The best thing I’ve encountered yet is the feeling of an empty room. This society is sooooo manipulative into getting us to rely on material things for happiness.

When I was young and not economically independent, I only wanted fancy clothes with my parents' money. When I started working, I only wanted to buy my dream car (with huge sacrifices). Now, I haven't bought anything for two years and the car is just a normal, functional object. So, I totally agree. Now, with my money, I only want to travel, meet new people, spend the time with my parents, study, and improve my personality.

That traveling and meeting new people will make you bored too. Then, later, once you have kids, minimalizm is impossible and not good.

I fail to understand how would someone wanting to settle will say hey let''s live without furniture, or hey let's not buy any toys for our kid. The getting together part with someone is in my view an expansion for both partners. Let's say you have 10 thousand dollars saved up and a female comes up starts living with you, gives birth to a child. Now your money aren't for you only. You have to spend for the kid, spend for her, you are obligated to give them attention and time ? Dude this is some serious ****

@@RiorozenIt won't end with me, I have a cousin with 30 years age gap, she's a newborn. Second, my parents are separated so it's a least concern to them. Thirdly having no wife or partner doesn't make you an emotional corpse, instead it gives you many friends and partners that you can have meaningful connections with. I always imagined language as finding an X, solving a problem. Maybe that's why I am in peace. When I want to do something I do it, I don't wait for approval or listen to my wife. Leash is gone buddy.

minimalism is not about not having things at all, it’s about getting one’s priorities straight. investing time and money only into something that one really needs and enjoys. one should totally invest into a nice thing if it is their work equipment, or their hardcore passion, or their favorite “creature comfort”. and not be afraid to go maximalist on something if they really do use and enjoy all those spices in the kitchen cabinet ,) never underestimate small boosts of positive energy spread though the day.
plus, nice tools and little things may really make a difference. especially if the person already has some experience and knows what they want (or suffer the most from).

I lived like this for about 5 or 6 years back in my 20s and I would just travel then come back to my "home base" , I loved it, my friends knew I had money and new people I met would think I lived in a big house, but I lived in a studio apartment and I slept on the floor and had a weight set, but now I have a house and will be starting a family soon, I think its good to let stuff go..

Really nice summary. Been a practicing minimalist for decades now for most of the reasons mentioned. An exercise I used to run for myself was "if everything in this mall was free, what would I take home?" Nice to see another intelligent person in this world. Cheers!

Wealth means having the money to obtain the things that you desire. If you desire little, then you can be wealthy with very little money.

The concept of Nirvana - the extinguishing of desire - makes sense. Making the acquisition and fulfillment of new desires the focus of our lives is an endless hamster wheel of futility. The Marie Kondo approach of only holding on to things that "spark joy" seems like the best test for acquiring or divesting myself of stuff. Japanese minimalism Wabi-sabi is the way. Minimalism in relationships is also key to joy. I agree that the food in England sucks.

Jewelry? I have a few my own pieces of it, but the most important for me are those inherited from my grandmother (I even have a watch from my great-grandmother). So no, things don't always lose meaning after years, sometimes they do. A matter of approach.

Minimalism can also be aesthetic. Human being is a whole and what we have inside is more or less expressed outside. You don't have emotional space to rest, so you don't care about physical space. I hope one day you find a reason to take care of your surroundings, it's also a way of selfcare.

@@10pmmemes88 I don't think he denies the need for basic functions a home provides - like security and convenience. The luxuries beyond the basic functions of a home, like wanting marble countertops, expensive rugs, premium leather sofas are all unnecessary for fulfilment in life, you'd get used to it anyway and the novelty would wear off. Basic ikea furniture gets the job done just the same.

As an aside, we moved years ago and gave up much of what we'd accumulated to that point in our lives... giving our barbeque/grill to a neighborhood family that would make good use of it was a rewarding experience for us and has flavored a continuing desire to treat things in our lives as though we are only stewards caring for it between waypoints on its journey.
I use a notebook which is 10 years old and I'm perfectly satisfied with its performance. Each time I watch new models in computer stores I end up thinking how good my notebook has been all these years )

I came here to learn how to invest after listening to a guy on radio talk about the importance of investing and how he made $989,000 in 2 months from $100k, somehow this video has helped shed light on some things, but I'm still confused, I'm a newbie and I'm open to ideas.
Investing in stocks is a good idea, a good trading system would put you through many days of success.
It is possible to produce superior performance provided you do something different from the majority. However, most of us tend to pay more attention to the shiniest position in the market to the cost of proper diversification.

Balance is key. I have travelled 35+ countries, I now have a nice house and car, but I don't have the BEST house or car. I deliberately hold back on buying flashy things, because I never want them to become a crutch. I could still quite happily live in a tent or motorhome.
You sound similar to me. I worked internationally for 8 years and have been to many countries also.
I am retired now and like you I have an average house and drive an 11 year old Camry and feel no need to impress anyone.
I now travel for fun and prefer cheaper third world countries for the culture and the value.
The main principles are constant self-development(skills, knowledges..) and helping others. Money is an important, but not the main part, but just a tool that helps in our development and unlocking our potential.

I always thought I was sort of a failure, since I'm almost 40 and still haven't found my path professionally.. but that's probably my view of what society thinks of me, when in actuality it shouldn't bother me as much since it's my life, not anyone else's.. I started following your channel today and hope you will continue sending out advice to all of us who diminish ourselves in view of what society expects of us.. I also have the same approach because I'm autistic 😂 I completely understand you, most people definitely say they prefer honesty but they don't mean it & it usually ends poorly foe the honest folk. It's taken me over 40 years to realise I have to curate my honesty (I've always understood basic social norms, I'm not gonna tell someone they look fat when they ask me etc) so the blow back is minimised & I don't end up in someone's bad books when I've done nothing wrong.
CZcams is a good way to connect with people who do like straight shooters.

I am retired and have come to realize that the past 20 years of my life other than working towards retirement, has been a complete waste.
All the things you talk about, is a carbon copy of my life.
But the past 6 months or so I’ve become so focused on living a minimalist lifestyle.

One way to be about it, is to be like those rich CZcamsr kids; have lots of things but not care about it. Don't try to remember what you have or where it is. But some people, like Tech Lead (and myself), feel like we have the need to know our "itinerary" of items that we have and own. And in that case, the more you have, the more you wonder and waste time thinking about where all your things are and you need to declutter. If you are like that, in my opinion, even though there is too much choice nowadays, it is still the best to go through the cycle and pick the best and your most favorite items in each category that you need (phone, laptop, desk, keyboard, mouse, chair, plates, car, jacket (like TechLead's nice Arcteryx jacket), etc.) and then just stick to it and do not research

These are not unconventional ideas. They are basic tenets of stoic, Buddhist, and taoist beliefs and have been around for 1000s of years.

Good video. There is nothing wrong with buying expensive food at the restaurant. Life is about experiencing. You can experience a new lambo and experience a used jeep. You can get rid of any decorations in your room in the name of minimalism or put everywhere flowers and art deco furniture. The real problem is attachment to a lifestyle which hinders freedom. Funny thing is you can get attached not only to lavish style of living, but also to spartan scarcity.

Great vid. This really speaks to the evolution in our capacity for attention. Not many people talk about the price of maintenance of “things.” In my experience less is indeed more for the simple reason thst my attention is saved for really appreciating the marvel of life as it is. It’s a hard luxury to describe, but once you’ve tasted it the burden of unconscious acquisition very much becomes a hindrance. Good job with having a go at explaining the inexplicable…

idk I've been living like this all my life, but I'd love to own a house with nice garage and backyard and plenty room for my toys. Frankly I am sick of living in crappy apartments dealing with loud neighbors and lack of privacy.

This is funny, and such a complex topic. Yes, I stop myself from seeking desires, but sometimes when I do seek my desire, I find myself enjoying and happy that I did it, because I got something that made me feel different for a while. Yes sure, it will wash of with time, and I will go on, but for a while it made me happier. So why not just do it? Not gonna live forever.
If I was alone in the world, I would still pick nice clothes, shave, take care of myself. Same when I was kid, playing alone. I wanted to wear a cloth that would make me feel like my hero, or my favorite character, regardless if anyone sees me or not.
Also people don't stop appreciating Tiffany or Cartier all of sudden, and want to move on. It's related to their financial situation. i wear Casio, I don't fancy a Rolex, coz I cant afford it. Yeah I appreciate it, but I dont desire it a single bit, even tho I did research how it's built our of curiosity.
The reason for me why luxury items aren’t worth it because of carefulness and maintenance.
Non-luxury items usually don’t require me to constantly tend to their upkeep but maintain their functionality in the long term.
So many luxury items actually consume TIME even if money is not a concern.
I own a Tesla model S, P100D, and the acceleration is an insane experience. I got into my car in the morning and it's nicely pre-heated and my 'gas tank' is fully charged. I will never go back to a 'normal' car. This will be 'normal' in the next 10 years, just like we will never go back to a horse-drawn carriage.
Tesla in NJ are all over the place there’s nothing special about the car.
I wear apple watch if someone offered to give me the best rolex now to wear instead of apple watch and i could not sell it or give it to my friends/family to sell i could only wear it instead of apple watch i would not want it for FREE..

F... that noise. People didn't make castles to imprison themselves, they made them for protection from raiders. Minimalsim isn't the same thing as forgoing the fundamental right of a person - private property.
Possessions are some ways in which people create “meaning” in life. The truth is that there is no “meaning” or “purpose” to life. There are still full grown adults out here asking themselves that question and were tricked into thinking that life has an actual “purpose”. 😆

I've got some really cool stuff, but I hardly ever use it. Instead I glory in those perfect moments from the past when I was really into the thing. You can only choose one thing at a time and having too much choice can be frustrating and ends in nearly everything NOT being chosen!
Everything in this life you learned is mostly conditioning. Up till the point where you realize... what you just told. You literally don't much. Shelter and some food, that's it. The clothes I wear everyday only bothers others... not me. One less choice in the morning. If you give it some deep thought you will be surprised how far you can downscale and still be happy. Claus is right.
