I am a retired 69 year old man living in Southern California.
I long ago decided that my retirement activities would be near zero costs and be of physical and psychological benefit.
I hike with friends, workout at the gym, borrow books from the library, play piano, and garden. My average monthly cost for these activities is less than $25.
No one needs to spend money to be happy.
@Joseph Lucas Ten dollars at Planet Fitness.here..but I walk 10,000 steps , garden, and use a push mower..not power driven .
@Joseph Lucas I've been a member of L.A. Fitness for 30 years. Cost me $9.00 per month.
My friends and I also live in Southern California and do the same thing ! I just not quite retired yet ! Every outdoor activity is near here and free ( Mount Baldy😀 ) you just need a little gas and a cooler with some food in it
Great video. I have a degree, worked 50 hrs a week, had no time, no energy, was stressed. It took me 20 years to pick up a courage to quit my job. Now i work part-time as a cleaner, no stress, lots of time and energy. Guys, I've never been happier! I am frugal, i buy only necessary things. I dont have a car, i got a bus pass, and i walk everywhere i can. I eat out once a month if any. I cook my meals at home, its cheaper and i know whats going into my food. :))) I dont need expensive holidays, i live near a nature reserve and i walk there with my partner every Sunday to connect with nature. Its free for us as we have local passes. I trully achieved a peace of mind. We dont need much to be happy.
Can we talk about how wasteful Christmas and gifting in general is?! I like the concept of family, spirituality, and gratitude around Christmas, but society at large has made it about "stuff" and I despise that.
I was sport in the 80s 70s as a kid and I didn't it to mine for the past 10 yrs I have had no tree no gift exchange and don't even have a Christmas dinner I totally agree I live the total minimum life now the best thing in life is walking cycling outdoors doesn't cost me a penny
My dad is from Europe he is 93 he said that's how it was back then... they all gathered in the Town Square to celebrate being prepared for winter... some small gifts were given mostly to the children usually warm clothes mittens Etc
Exactly. My family made the decision to focus on experience and togetherness, instead of gifts or material things to celebrate Christmas. For the past several years we’ve taken a family trip around Christmas time. The memories and experience are way better than getting stuff.
#6 "Nature don't charge anything"
A walk or time in my garden is the best therapy I know.
I agree! Whenever I am feeling stressed or anxious, I always go to nature and it relaxes me so much. It's so powerful!
One trick saved my life years ago, if I really wanted something, I would take a picture of it and look at it for one month. 95% of the time after that month was up I didn’t want it anymore. I talked myself out of. But now, I don’t have to even do that. I just don’t go in a stores Other than for necessities
@@rowan7658 Same here! except food essentials, medicines, consumables -limited household cleaning products.
Peace of mind is what I strive for. It's a luxury in its own self.
"You don't need to be growing all the time" - this is so relatable.
You are so cute and so smart!!! I am so glad I found your channel! I am sorry for this generation that is growing up in this era of consumerism. I grew up in the 60's and 70's when we didn't buy anything!! No fast food, no Walmart, no designer crap!!! We didn't have a garage full of junk either, only the car lived in the garage!! Houses had small closets because we didn't buy a bunch of clothes that we didn't need!! I had six brothers and sisters and we truly believed that we were rich! (we weren't)
We were happier and less anxious. I literally never heard of anxiety when I was growing up!! Keep making videos and teaching people the true meaning of life..you are awesome!!
I agree with you, 100%. You are my new favorite You Tuber
I'm 55 years young, I enjoy nature, music and I'm grateful to be alive and well in this beautiful world.
One of the best channels ever. Not too many people that are grounded in the United States like that.
You can either experience the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. The choice is yours. - Marcus Aurelius. You sir, have words of enlightenment in a world run by empires of lies. Thank you🙏🏽
The other thing that we need is great relationships. Spending time with those who are precious to us. Update: having no debt and manging finances well, means that you have the time and energy to focus on that.
What a truly sensible young man you are Austin. Imagine how different the earth and all our lives would be if we didn't believe what "The Man " says. As a 72 year old I say sit back and listen carefully to what Austin is saying..we will all have a more beautiful stress free life if we do. The bonus being you are taking control of your own lives.
I just got to say, we have a lot in common, so many people can’t believe us but, my lifetime dream has finally come true. I’m in my 50s I raise 10 children successfully. All are out of the house and doing well. I raised them without any government assistance from the age of 40. My oldest is 40 my youngest two are 18 and just graduated tonight. When I was a child I knew 3 things, I was going to have a large family, I loved to travel, and I wanted to live my life for the Lord. For the last 10 years I’ve pursued plans to travel. As I saved, I also planned. I sold my house my business and my van and turn it into a camper. God blessed me so much that my van is really about a 45.000 van. But I paid 26.000 plus 9 to build it out and install solar. I guess my point in all of this is to say, if I can achieve my dreams anyone can. I am far from me of money. I just know how to work and I hate any form of shopping. I love to look for the deals on necessity items and I also get that euphoric feeling of saving like people get when they spend money and take something new home.
Well done with everything, good luck for your future. Congrats on your kids graduating. All the best to you
God has blessed you and may He continue doing so. 🙏 congratulations on it all. 🤗
This is a great return to the basics of life. We all have been hustled by advertisers and money lenders. I've woken up a little late, but I'm still glad to be here.
"I don't buy, that debt is inevitable" - FINALLY, someone said out loud what I think!
Love the "debt as a CULTURAL CONSTRUCT"! So true. Borrow money and have Chase, Wells Fargo, Citibank and the like ON YOUR PAYROLL!!
I have the same philosophy when it comes to success. Because I've been frugal all of my life, I've managed to retire with quite a nice nest egg. But the best part of my life is having the time now to volunteer at a food bank, and I also make meals for the homeless. It's more fulfilling than any job I've ever had or any luxury I ever had.
Great video. I agree with 95% of everything you’ve said. I always tell my 3 adult children that all you need in life is “Food in your belly, a roof over your head and clothes on your back! Everything else is optional.” I’m sending them the link to this video. Keep up the great work.
Wow, I am normal after all, I have no desire to go up the ladder and people look at me like I'm crazy , but I am happy and content and spend time with my family as a mother
You're a treasure. I enjoy watching your videos with my coffee (free coffee from the office, not from the coffee shop :)
I have stopped doing the Christmas buy everything panic mode. No more appologising for not giving a gift or a card. I would need to be on double my salary to go back to that mad habit. Also I have loved this video and shared it with my brother Carlos who has constantly been told he is broken.
Living frugally is wise not cheap👍👍
I can't tell you how much I love these videos. It's like listening to a preacher and I'm constantly saying "Amen!" I love the passion in your voice too. I can really tell you mean it.
You are absolutely brilliant. Wise beyond your years.
Totally true. I agree 100 percent. I am retiring early and I do want to live simple and travel the world in a budget.
Wow!! What a great, refreshing take on “what I don’t buy as a minimalist!” I assumed it would be “expensive shampoo, paper products, plastic toothbrushes...” lol I love this- not buying into lies and cultural constructs!
Trying to make different videos, lol! We all know that you shouldn't buy paper towels!
I live quite lean by living with my retired parents and investing over 50% of my income. I used to be the person buying a new cellphone every year and basically trying to keep up with the Joneses. I have learned a lot in the last four years. People just need to learn how to balance their lives to where they are useful and fulfilled.
Wish I would have done all of that when I was Austin's age...buying is a temporary high.
i ve been strictly "If i can t pay it in CASH, i will not buy it!" all my life. Never ever bought anything on creidt ever. And i no longer follow any fashion and hardly buy any new clothes anymore (except for some underwear and stockings every now and then, and shoes),,,, when i was still working i always bought very good-quality clothing, have been wearing these the last 20 years and i ll use that up the next decades too. .... I only buy now clothes when i gained a lot of weight and need a size i don t have already in my wardrobe.
Clothes used to be made so much better. I have some quality pieces that will last a lifetime. I lost fifteen pounds and can wear everything in my wardrobe....now just have to keep it off..lol If I need something I buy it at an estate sale, or second hand store...except undergarments....wish I would have done better saving when we were younger.
I love the fact that you usually start and finish your videos with some Spanish words! As a spanish speaker te doy las gracias por hacerlo! ❤️
My new favorite CZcamsr. Speak the truth! Tomorrow isn’t promised.
One thing I do as a financial minimalist - that provides the best return on investment - is read. Reading fiction activates your imagination. Reading non-fiction exposes you to the wisdom of other people. I almost never buy new books. Though used books can be a little more beat up, the content is the same. A $3 used book can give you valuable tools that you will use for the rest of your life. The shame of our culture is that there is so much wisdom in books - but many can't be bothered to read.
Life isn’t boring. “Only boring people are boring.”-Mad Men
You’re my twin! We think the same! The whole 24 hour thing is so true!!! I have always felt that way. 8 hours working is NOT the same as 8 hours on a Saturday not working. Yes!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
I love your wisdom! Before I answer your question, may I tell you that while lots of people, mostly boys, think farts, pooping, and diarrhea are funny, there are lots of people who don't. What I don't buy is that just because I'm a low income elder, my life should be miserable. I have a rich life full of friends, yummy homemade meals, music, movies and books. Most of my medical bills are covered by Medicare, I live in a nice rent controlled apartment, and drive a low mileage car that's nearly paid off. Life is good!
If someone has to convince you that you need something then you dont need IT! Amazing and brilliant !! My brain just froze after you said that. What a point!
You’re so right! My husband insisted that we dance and take trips (and long walks) when we were younger. Now we’re retired and have more time and money, but we’re no longer physically able to do those things. We do other, more sedate stuff, and life is good, but I’m so glad we didn’t miss out on those activities by putting them off!
I just love everything you share!
Chief Joseph said "The Earth does NOT belong to us WE belong to the Earth."
I heard a young entrepreneur brag that they never went to college and "I could buy and sell these graduate school kids ten times over." Funny, because I wouldn't trade my education for any amount of money. I don't buy that being rich is an inherently more desirable state than being middle class. I feel pretty good about the decisions we've made and I like my life a lot. That's all that really matters.
I will be 25 this year and I managed to "escape" this script. I got a student loan at 19 (not even knowing what that really meant) and went abroad. I am lucky student loans in the UK don´t require you to pay them off when you earn below a certain amount (excluding benefits for disabilities or unemployment). I finished university, but I realized I couldn´t work full-time because I suffer from a severe mental illness. I basically live off benefits and occasional part-time jobs earning less than 400 $ a month. And I still manage to save around 50 to 100$ each month. Sometimes I don´t earn anything and live off disability benefits that are about 200$. Even in my country, most people would not be able to live on that without ending up on the street. But I manage because my mother had the same ilness and we were always so poor we struggled to keep a roof over our head. She taught me how to be frugal (or life taught us to be more precise). I don´t want to be homeless and my health does not allow me to work as it is expected of me, so not buying things is the only option. But I am not unhappy. I believe my greatest hapiness are the times when I am not very sick. Health is more important than money.
Putting well-earned money into the stock market can be over emphasized for first-time investors, unlike a bank where interest is sure thing! Well, basically times are uncertain, the market is out of control, and banks are gradually failing. I am working on a ballpark estimate of $5M for retirement, and I have a good 6-figure loaded up for this, could there be any opportunity for a boomer like me? I'm nearly 60.
It's a good idea to seek advice at the moment, unless you're an expert yourself. As someone who runs a service business and sells products on eBay, I can tell you that the economy is struggling and many people are struggling financially.
I agree, having a brokerage advisor for investing is genius! Amidst the financial crisis in 2008, I was really having investing nightmare prior touching base with a advisor. In a nutshell, i've accrued over $2m with the help of my advisor from an initial $350k investment.
*@Gallo-firestone* That does make a lot of sense, unlike us, you seem to have the Market figured out. Who is this consultant?
The decision on when to pick an Adviser is a very personal one. I take guidance from “Gertrude Margaret Quinto” to meet my growth goals and avoid mistakes, she's well-qualified and her page can be easily found on the net.
Thank you for this Pointer. It was easy to find her handler, She seems very proficient and flexible. I booked a call session with her.
Hi Austin 😊 Today is March 5 2023; Thank you for a great video! I recently started to watch/follow your videos and your content is great. I live in Sweden and I think it’s amazing how so many people from different countries in the world want to be more mindful regarding financial minimalism and to simplify life. Simplifying is different for everybody but just to be aware of it is a great start. Thank you once again for great and different (unique) content!
Number 11… 😯 I’ve pursued “self improvement” relentlessly. Two university degrees, loads of courses, thousands of pounds a year on therapy! It’s exhausting and expensive and it’s never enough. I’m beginning to think it’s a red herring so when you started saying no. 11 I sat up and listened!! Thank you, Austin 🙏🏼
all you mentioned is "existential" way of life style, we think we live for ever and we plan for ever because we count ourselves as self-exceptional but any day we can be gone and the entire life planning will be gone no more existing
Dear Austin, I was impressed by the thoughts and ideas presented in your previous videos but this one is my personal highlight: clearly "buying" means believing, it's just exactly that and language even tells us so! You've nailed it: it's a simple but very exact thesis of yours, actually an empowering revelation! Thanks for sharing this mind-blowing and life-changing content with everyone. All the very best wishes to you from Germany:)
Thank you Sarah! I appreciate your kind words! And we almost have the same last name!
I too don't buy the focus on constant self-improvement. I'm happy with myself.
Incredible insight, Austin! Happy to see folks in my demographic chiming in as well. I feel we are living in a modern day Babylon, and my husband and I decided about 2 yrs. ago to work our way out of it. Challenging yet definitely a more rewarding path! Thank you for the inspiration!
I’m so glad I found this channel.
I am in my 70s and am still climbing mountains....figuratively that is!
Thank you for your wisdom. I think your channel is one of the best financial/minimalist ones out there!! Greetings from the UK 🇬🇧
I relate to and appreciate your candid realism, thank you!
Not everyone goes to College, I went into the military and it taught me a lot!
It’s so true! I don’t want much but I still work relentlessly in pursuit of a materialistic dream because it’s what I think society should do!!!
I so agree with you Austin. I'm very happy that your channel has a lot of sucess, the more people will hear your message, the better for all of us. Thank you. Greatings from Poland.
You are a modern philosopher. Many thanks.
This channel changed my life , thank you from the bottom of my soul, Austin
But Austin - learning to be content IS growth. Major growth. 💖
Thank you for your channel I’m starting to open my eyes the consolidation company my escrow account my bank account and my loans give terrible customer service after you sign the contracts and I am so tired of being their sucker..i’m self-employed and every time my equipment breaks down it cost as much as a car to repair it and I have to keep doing it to keep my house and my nice car etc. and I’m being told this is what it takes to be successful I feel I have no control over my money …I’m going to start making changes today thank you for the inspiration my friend
Oh my goodness!!! I am so so grateful I found this channel! You have changed my life TODAY! You have voiced what my intuition has not been able to identify…but knew all along 🙏
I'm glad to see your channel growing Austin! I love your channel, please keep your videos coming. I hope youre having an absolutely amazing day!
Binge watching your videos on this Friday night. No happy hour or restaurants. Just a drink made by mua and a delicious cooked dinner. Thank you for what you do! I have a son a year younger than you who's always thought as you and I didn't understand it before, but I've finally seen the light. Keep opening people's eyes.
Yes, I agree with you totally...you’re fantastic. Thank you for your thinking, your being - and sharing your voice.
You are such a blessing to me to me this year! Your videos will help me stop spending unnecessary things and my goal this year is to save more money than the previous years. I probably have to use cash to really cut the spending because swiping the cards just doesn't work for me. We are not in debt but I can do better. You are an angel saving people from stress, depression and other mental or physical illness. I think the stress that people have nowadays is one cause of the illness people have.
Austin you make me think and feel differently about how i thought about things and preceive it. Bring these ideas and principles into my life
I was ready to see list of stuff people not buying anymore to save money - I was like - ermm okay .. I am glad that I watched it still. I will share this with my students Austin. We, especially the young ones, need this reminder. Thanks Austin!
I did not expect the topics discussed in this video. This is absolutely the exact video I needed to randomly find in my feed today.
Thank you so much for creating it❤️
New subscriber here👏🏽
What I love about your videos is that you always bring a slightly different perspective than what I expect, and it's very refreshing. This is probably related to the diversity of experiences you've had in your life, travelling a lot and living in different countries, etc. Go you!
I just came across your channel. Love it. You call a spade a spade. Love your honesty and straight forward your videos are.
Lots of cheer from Australia 🇦🇺
Brilliant. Will listen to this often. Thank you. I don’t “buy” these concepts, either. Love the message and validation.
There is MUCH Wisdom in that which You have to say. Thank You for sharing. Greetings from Ontario, Canada.
I really enjoyed watching this video. Thank you for sharing.
I just found you tonight and let me tell you, I am loving your content. I’m about to make a career transition that will mean I’m bringing in less money, and these ideals are exactly my motivation. Now you’ve got me even more fired up about this than I already was. I needed that energy boost tonight. Thank you! ❤
Your words resonate with me. Thank you for sharing truth worth knowing!
Hermano, your channel and your insight has opened my 46yr old eyes. You are inspiring and keep up the great work! God bless you brother.
Agreed! Well done! Totally agree with your philosophy.
This is truly deep stuff when you say the second we are born we are told we are broken. Wow, that really hit home.
This is such great, mature and true advice
I've recently adopted the philosophy of minimalism, especially as it relates to the accumulation of "stuff". I've come to realize that my habit of "needing" things was almost like a compulsion/addiction, which means it hasn't been easy but I'm taking it one step at a time.
This is by far the BEST "Things I Don't Buy Anymore" video out there!! Thank you Austin for packing this video full of Gems and Silliness💙
What I like about Amazon is that you can return stuff. When I lose control and buy stuff I don't need I return it and it feels good. Now I don't even have the membership so the temptation is practically gone!
This is one of my favorite videos of yours. 100% agree. You are one of my favorite financial CZcamsrs. Your life is so relatable unlike the big time guys in this space.
The first 10 seconds of this video I already liked and subscribed. Pure gold Austin. Thanks for sharing!
I've discovered your channel recently, Austin, and I really love the content. I like the way you name the things and processes. I have the same feelings when I observe the world and my life. You give me a lot od inspiration. Thanks :) Keep making your videos.
Really great advice, you have no idea how much I needed to hear most of it. I'd consider myself an practicing financial minimalist for the last 6 yrs---but REALLY great content in this video. THANK YOU!
We camp in most of our vacations, and this has really shown me that we don’t need much to live at all. We get buy just fine for days with our tent, food, and a few other camping items. It has helped me to understand essentialism is the life I want to live.
glad i ran to you brother, most of what you say i come across before, here and there. now a days i have been questioning things. your videos help me clear some things in my mind will be hanging out on your channel from time to time. thank God
Hello, these are my thoughts as well and I thank you for your honesty and also for your way of thinking.
Sometimes, I feel like an alien in the middle of all the people surrounding myself.
But what you are saying is reflecting my thoughts.
Thank you and keep it up.
Really inspiring and life affirming, the best advice I've heard for ages.
I really enjoy your videos. Thank you for the inspiration!
Really thought provoking and great and humorous presentation! Love your quirkiness👍🏻 (and I say this as a compliment)
Thanks my friend for all your advices. It really changed my life. Last year was the last of a stupid consumerism. My favourite part "Me gusta el Agustin, this guy is ok, is ok". Greetings from Perú
Great wise pep talk and rallying call. Wish this was amplified to many from early life. Caught me quite late. Good to be reminded too
Wow! I've just discovered your chanel today and have listened through a few of your videos. The most important life lessons conveyed in such a powerful, likeable and very convincing way! Totally resonates with my own rather intuitive insights. Great inspiration! Thank you from Germany!
I’m so glad I found this channel! I agree with and already do much of what is spoken about. I’m a saver, and I’m frugal I’m most ways, but I’m also an impulse shopper. However, since I started watching this channel, I am already getting better with that! There are things I would have bought, but thought to myself, do I really need this? And then didn’t buy. I LOVE 💕 this channel so much!
Brilliant video, really resonated with me. Keep up the good work
Just found your channel and absolutely agree with everything you just said! We’ve got it all wrong I hope a lot of people see this and realise they are being played….. imagine if everyone thought like us? There would be some very unhappy people at the top! Love from across the pond xx🥰💜
Tienes toda la razón. Yo aprendí con el tiempo. Porque nací en una época en la cual el materialismo ocupaba lugar número uno.
11 months later and still right on time.
What does society sell you that you don't buy?
That we should have a million dollars before we retire.
I don't buy that I should do more, be more, want more.
A house bigger than my husband and I need. Congratulations for the recent growth on your channel!
That I should have a car that everybody else wishes they could own.
I don't buy that children need all that stuff the society tell us that they do. I don't buy that I have to get a bigger house in order to raise my children well. I just don't buy it at all.
