If there’s such a thing as coincidence I was reading Epictetus last night. He says, “Don’t be puffed up with pride if you are able to provide your needs with very little cost. The first task of the person who wishes to live wisely is to free himself or herself from the confines of self-absorption. Consider how much more frugal the poor are than we, how much better they forebear hardship. If you want to live simply, do it for yourself, do it quietly, and don’t do it to impress others. Live simply for your own sake.”

This what made Stoics different from Cynics: It’s good to be minimalist, frugal, moderate humble and able to endure poverty, but you don’t have to show and express these things to others unless it is necessarily needed to know. To Stoics philosophical practice is their own business, keeping it safe to be practiced while being able to fit as part of the humanity.

Being addicted to buying things is similar to alcohol/drug addiction or gambling. You get a little buzz everytime you buy something new that doesn't last so you have to buy more stuff over and over to get the buzz again and again.

I used to tell my daughter when we were in a store and she saw something lovely that she wanted that it's great to look at all the these beautiful things, but we don't need to own them. They will still be beautiful sitting there on the shelf and we don't have to worry about storing the stuff or taking care of it. Let someone else have to deal with all that. We can just appreciate the beauty. It worked some of the time! ☺

I used to live like this but I got into cycling, rock climbing, camping, woodworking... You need a lot of gear and space to enjoy such hobbies and sometimes I feel the weight of these things weighing me down. Fortunately everything can be sold and bought again so it helps also to not become too attached to things, while also allowing yourself to enjoy them periodically.

One of my favourite quotes from Diogenes is "It is the privilege of the gods to want nothing, and of godlike men to want little". I used to have this mindset of "wanting/needing more" just in case I need them (when I need them). But then I realised I was just tormenting myself with the idea that I will never have enough. So I attempted to cut through things I don't need slowly. And yeah now I find joy in having little (or enough, in this case).
I've always felt that we live in a world that constantly tells us we don't have enough, and we'll never be enough. It's up to our self-realisation to break away from this cycle I guess.

Nice video, love the theme of lightness, and minimalism, but you can only travel with such few belongings so freely, because you still rely on other people or businesses to have the usual comforts ready for you to use. That's something that always makes me think to reduce my living standard rather than just my package so to speak.

" but you can only travel with such few belongings so freely, because you still rely on other people or businesses to have the usual comforts ready for you to use. "
I see your point, but if he pays for it he helps that business make money. So what is wrong with that? What I really don't like is when people travel basically with nothing and take advantage of other people. "somebody will give me some food. Somebody will let me sleep in his house, use their bathroom etc.." It is disgusting to me. That person who is helping works hard to have what he has and there comes some "free spirit who doesn't need anything" and just uses uses resources of other people.. I see this A LOT nowadays.. But that is not the case of this youtube creator obviously. He has plenty of money and he can buy what he needs on the spot.. Nothing wrong with that at all.. The only think I would add is that maybe this youtube creator is not realizing that not all people want to travel and be free like that. There is a lot of people who have a dream of staying at one nice place in their home with their family and live there happy until they die..

@@jirihutecka9020agreed, and to "travel light," one must be able to travel, at all. Twenty years ago, people may have been enslaved by debt because of their glutting themselves with things they don't need. Now, most people slave away just to remain housed, fed, and clothed.
It does take some money - some - to travel light.

Thank you for this talk. Travelling light (in a broad sense) was my wisest decision. I'm disabled and neirodivergent, and chronic fatigue and overload simply doesn't leave me much resources to deal with lots of possessions. I perceive things like clothes or utensils as instruments for living, and having less choices helps to prevent decision fatigue while being able to concentrate on quality of the objects - in the end, they serve longer and save me lots of time and money (I don't need to shop that often, which is exhausting). There's so much information and just plain noise nowadays, and going minimal leaves plenty of space for unwinding and digesting all the info. Thanks to your videos on minimalism I realised what and how much I really need, and it partially helped with my chronic anxiety. Thank you.
At the same time having some stash of food really helps with visiting a shop more rarely lol

true. I found years ago that no collection hobby is worth it. All are heavy baggage. My only collection right now is digital like videos or photos but even then, it can be baggage sometimes by the need to update or maintain it with new data. I still like having my own house and car in the future but it would likely be small or big but simple, so that is easy to maintain, not of a big deal whatever happens to it.

Stuff isn’t bad in itself, the attachment to it is. I like cars and have noticed that the more expensive it is, the less likely people are to drive it on track or work on it themselves. This is what makes the Japanese car culture so appealing: it proposes relatively cheap machinery that you can play with, without stressing too much about costs. On the other end of the spectrum are those who buy a Porsche as an “investment” and freak out about the resale value.

I even threw away my toothbrush and underwear. I now walk around with only a loin cloth. Then I realised why keep the cloth? I now make a loin cloth out of toilet paper from public toilets each morning. I spend my time running from the mall security guards. Fortunately because of my lack of possessions my speed stats are high and the guard is fat.

The past is definitely something that I never want to forget. because of how intense it was but I know that I’m going to have to in order to enjoy the present. If I buy a new shirt today, then It can represent me in the present moment, more efficiently,
In the back of my mind by collecting the old outfits, I can always slip back into a calmer time. If I let go of all that baggage right here, then the load I carry would be much lighter I should be able to focus.
