Translation: Isn't the flat 9 on the A minor dominant chord important? Are you serious? In this piece it is fundamental, because it gives a unique color to the composition, especially in a bossa. But if you prefer to use chords intended for five-year-olds starting to play an instrument, go ahead, but at least avoid making yourself ridiculous on the web.

Dear Tony - Usually I just give a thumbs up to your videos. However, this time I just want to take a moment to say thanks. I'm an old man now and I've forgotten many things. Believe it or not, I actually forgot that this has been my favorite song since I was a pre-teen. Hearing it again after so many years moved me nearly to tears. I remember when I first started playing the piano, I only wanted to learn so I could play songs like this. That was many, many years ago and sometimes life gets in the way and there was not always space in my life for the piano. I regret that. However, I'm retired now and have no more excuses not to dive fully into learning this magnificent song. It was magical to me all those many years ago and it is magical to me now. The interesting thing is that I've heard people mention Black Orpheus a thousand times and I never knew that it was actually A Day In the Life of a Fool (a far better title if you ask me). I've already printed the lead sheet so I'll be working this out well into the night. Thank you so much. I've never said this about any CZcams video or piano tutorial but this video made my day. Thanks again.

i want to light the filre of the pooped party cause these lessons are rocking good. the point of any music video is; can it get you the viewer to a higher advancment than you were at before; for me this works. in the end; I think its the case that everyone actually teaches themself music; just you listen to people and you get ideas on where and how to get where you want to arrive at and this one reminds me that the path I'm on is not a waste of time. I listen and I kinda feel "O I see" and while I may not be able to execute; I at least understand; at least to some extent. And then you have to ask what the point of life is. This is on track with that idea. So its chill. Im not pushed away from who I am with this lessons mode; and who I am is like; O I see... So if Im trying to figure out how to play the counter point line in the you know the part in the bridge of Girl from Ipanema; where after the second chord is arrived at; its two notes and.. at that point its like a descending... sound and... after listening to this video I tried diminished scale. I've listened to a lot of videos cause I've been living in this since 1975 or so; but none ever really got me to just see what to maybe play when trying to play that melodic phrase; its after; if you play it in F its.. after the I think its Cb then D then Eb. so there is some melodic I'm pretty sure its going down. But what notes to play so it sounds like on the records? I mean I can try to listen and figure; but that gets hopeless after a while and.. so this is like; o I see; and then well try some diminished or at least something with the diminished scale in mind and... well if someone can't not go to the bathroom at a party; well that is not right; these are actually fantastic lessons. So I figured to say something cause I'd have to go play teh piano in the garage cause the one in the house will wake up people who will get annoyed at me and the one in the garage is like sounds a little bad from all the moisture its absorbing. And the nighbors might call the fuzz if its too loud. That really fouls up the party. Black Orpheus is sounds very... I was in Brasil once. There are a lot of nibbibibbies there. So its probably the song that gave that. You have to eat the toxic part of the cashew plant to undo that and it won't be enjoyable for a long time after; but they will get cured. Also I always kinda struggle to get the two hands ... I mean when do you play the chords in the measures anyhow and you can see how he is doing it in this video; clear as day; o I see; taht is fantastic. I can try that. So when the dinner guests come over and I'm totally out of words; I slither over to the piano and; they dont realize Im getting ideas from this video; they think its like something I thought up. But I'm just trying to factor the idea of diminished scale into waht I do. the idea is to play. All teh theory is fun but the idea is playing; and this like shows you how. Even if one is not a Leonard Berstein which for goodness sakes I'm not. But from this one can be like.. good. This song never creeped me out; its a very neato sound. Sorta like you figure the next step would be like; o whats his name; Song from My Father guy. ... I feel so idiotic. My mind is racing through all these names and I know its not any of them. Ahh Horace. I like the brasilian lyrics from Gartota better So profoundly satisfying; the american ones are not as much fun. As if the you are my Sunshine guy Gene A being his name; he did that in Db not F. Amazing Grace works ok in F. But Db for the other one. Down in South America; Db works there too. Some things transcend the differences. Anyhow how do you make sense of the sixty million different theoritec things that could apply> Well this lessons gets you there; gets me there anyhow; and that is what good teaching is. What the hell difference does it make what the words are? None; what matters is if the pillar like does not collapse while you are standing under it. Anyhow if you hit the chord on the third beat... then lay the melodic beats in the and and four and... OMG: I see; taht is the secret to playing so it sounds something other than a laxative commercial.
well; I got distracted here; my brain has become very diminished today .. only took me from 1975 to get there. Its not 2021 isn't it? year of the covid chord... lols.... ºscale over 7 chord... ahh; got it; wow...
    ciao.
    chill.
god was Brazile weird.... I was in Haiti too. Doesn't this lesson remind you of how it feels to listen to like Horace Silver play? Somethign about it just gets ya. i did not realize Art Tatum sang actually; but probably he did. (no wonder he played so much chromatic stuff;) lols.
hmm; I hope I don't get banned from this facebook page. That'd be like getting expelled from harvard and having to wash dishes in the restaurant. o yeah; when I was in Brasil; Osmar Milito was playing in the hotel; he let me play his piano one day. So he realized I was no Herbie Hancock; and then later he played that song from the Charlie Sheen war film; you know; it was like crescendo..... they were aware the USA had started up in Vietnam. the jazz was jazz; and samba... I better like stop with this babbling. thanks for the helpful lesson; uh oh; seems like I've woken up the zombies... gotta splitsky....

Sorry to be a party pooper but the beginning of the lesson gave me the hibbigibbies. You presented "Manha de Carnaval" like somebody would present Ray Charles as “that blind guy that sings and plays piano”.
I'd expect a professor of Jazz to know the name of a tune he teaches. At least the important ones.
This "tune", although a very simple, one of the pillars of the Brazilian music heritage.
The correct name (as it’s known by all professionals) is “Manha de Cranaval” (Brazilian Portuguese), or in its American translation (in Europe and England everybody calls this piece by its original Brazilian name): “The morning of the Carnival”.
The reason it shouldn't be called "Black Orpheus" is that this piece is one of many, written for the Brazilian movie, Orfeu Negro (“Black Orfeus”) and, maybe the most famous one, but confusing the name of the song with the name of the movie demonstrates certain ignorance and, as a teacher one must spread knowledge, not only technical tricks.
This could be an obnoxious comment, if not for the two facts:
    1. Orfeu Negro is THE movie and the event in time that officially introduced Samba and Bossa Nova to the West (Including the US. Yes, before Jobim and Sinatra).
    2. The great Brazilian composer Luis Bonfa that wrote Manga De Carnival.
After all, even for music, if we don’t know where we’re coming from, we don’t know where we’re going and if we don’t preserve the heritage of the past, our children will not preserve our heritage.
    Other than that….

Some of us don’t know as much about Brazil or it’s artistic history. Some of us had the opportunity to go there once, to visit family, but missed that opportunity. We still don’t know the complete history of the tune. I have heard all these titles, but didn’t know it predated Jobim. I’m still learning.

@@TonyWinston Please find the link to the original cords below. I have no experience or equipment to record myself playing piano, not could I find (it doesn't mean that there are none) some really quality stuff for piano interpretation of this piece on youtube.
The issue with this piece is that it's written for guitar and conveying minute nuances on a piano is more difficult.
Basically you must be very meticulous with rhythm (and minute fluctuations of the rhythm) and the harmony.
Listen, get the groove, get really comfortable with the harmony and chords and only then try to play.

@@TonyWinston AMEN! Even crazier.... the tune is in many books as "Black Orpheus" (at least one of mine included, perhaps a couple).
I can not believe someone would make such a snarky comment on a JAZZ LEAD SHEET, on such a wonderful BEGINNER video. It would perhaps be different if this were a history of jazz course.
