I’m a 73 year old clarinet player who recently (6 years ago?) returned from a decades long sabbatical from my instrument. I’m very interested in harmony and improvisation so I even bought a keyboard to make study easier.

I’m a horn player trying to learn jazz piano. Your videos are packed with such valuable information, much appreciated. I like the relaxed spontaneous style and the way you go through the standards in stages, very practical and inspiring. Around 7:30 your remarks about the one diminished scale was refreshing. Then you talk about analyzing transcriptions, and finding that Parker, Keith Jarret, and other classic jazz masters don’t seem to follow the rules, yet their solos and melodies are amazing. It reminded me of a Charlie Parker quote. “First you learn the instrument, then you learn the music, then you forget all that s**t and just play.” and “Music is your own experience, your thoughts, your wisdom...”

Tony this lesson is great and the method very clear also for us beginners: basic chords and melody, open voicings, improvisation, reharmonization. At least the first 3 steps are very welcome also for your next lessons, they help a lot!

Ivan Jochner oh thank you! I watch Kent, Julian and Jeff too, but I haven't heard of the other two. I'll have to check them out. Jens Larsen is another great one, even though he plays and teaches jazz and blues guitar, but a lot of what he shares still applies to piano. Another one is Glen Rose who sells amazing teaching videos. He shares short snippets of longer videos on CZcams that he sells at a great price if you compare them to a full in person piano lesson. Tony Winston I just discovered and I really got excited about his "Tangerine" video on open chord voicing with a free PDF to print out of the lesson.
I am very glad you made an extended/comprehensive video lesson like your older ones. I am a big fan of your lessons and appreciate your outstanding effort very much. but I have to admit that I don´t like the newer short videos of you. They don´t contain so much insights and are unfortunately too facile. Thank you very much :) Greetings from a student of you from germany..

Hi Tony thank you for sharing your Berkley-College secrets. I would appreciatie it if you play your solo's realy like you believe they are nice and beatiful for the listener, because they are. So please and them with respect till the hole chorus is ended, also you could take even three or four chorusses because, after a while improvising, musicions tend to play more form the sinking program than their planning program so this is always nice for the listeners I lke third and fourth chorusses, because that's where the fancy stuff happends.... You are one of my favourite teachers and all your little improvisations are still gold for me, there is much experience in them, so I try to seek them out all of them or at least to get what you are playing...Please continue and maybe you could do a lesson on messian scales adapted to a song or different augmented scales and their licks and paterns????Thank You Vrey Much from Holland!!

I wish jazz pianists would make it clear from the outset that they use the term “dominant seventh” to refer to any major chord with a flatted 7th, not just the 5 chord. To a classically trained pianist, the dominant is the 5th degree of the scale and there is only one dominant 7th chord within any given tonality.
Just figured it out: c# dim. Scales works on C7, F7, A7 and D7
Not really. If you mean c#,d#,e,f# etc., that scale works for C7,A7,F#7,Eb7.
