  • On September 18, 2012 Gypsy Swing guitarist Joscho Stephan sat in with Colorado Jazz group Swing Je T'aime at the Rialto Theater in Loveland, Colorado. The resulting performance was one that left us speechless and in awe of the mastery displayed by not only Joscho, but also by the members of Swing Je T'aime. Enjoy their rendition of Luiz Bonfá's famous jazz standard, "Black Orpheus," the third song performed during their first set.

    ~ Joscho Stephan ~
Just 20 years old when he released his first CD on the highly regarded label Acoustic Music Records, his name was already known to insiders as a force to be reckoned with on the acoustic guitar. His debut was named CD of the month by the American magazine Guitar Player and critics waxed eloquent about this virtuoso young musician working in the swing tradition of Django Reinhardt. This authentic European jazz form with its charming mixture of joyous enthusiasm and relaxed coolness offers the ideal platform for Joscho Stephan's remarkable technical abilities. This fact is underlined by the high level of attention accorded to his CD releases.
    ~ Swing Je T'aime ~
With a refined sense of style, and a broad palate of experience and background, Swing Je T'aime is an upbeat jazz group from Colorado that redefines the common conception of jazz. Drawing influence from Brazilian beats, gypsy swing, pop ballads, jazz standards, and all genres far and wide, the coalesense of style and virtuosic technicality blends seamlessl into a musical experience that is unparalleled.

The violinist is very fine. There's nothing wrong with the arrangement either. The bassist and drummer are doing their job well, which is to provide a good rhythm w/o going nuts. CZcams doesn't provide high-quality sound b/c of bandwidth and storage constraints.

2:55 is the first line of "Speak Softly Love (Theme from The Godfather)", interestingly enough. :) 4:17 He reference Tico Tico. A fine performance all around. I heard this piece played for the first time on the violin, and came for that. Joscho is on the list of must-hears as well.

They are special kinds of guitars Gypsy Swing Guitarists like to use. They were originally designed by Selmer to be an alternative classical but the classical guys didn't like them and the gypsies did so now they are associated with Gypsy Swing. They generally have the classical headstocks, and the strings are kind of half classical half steel as they are silver wound like nylons, and have a springy feel but are technically steel.

The great guys at Wildwood (they are the freakin' coolest) provided Joscho with that guitar which is a very nice Dupont D-hole, which are some of the nicest guitars made now, and Joscho plays it like no one else. It takes a lot of technique to coax that kind of sound out of even the nicest GJ guitars. You use super thick picks with an aggressive rest stroke. In the hands of Joscho, you are dead on - sounds amazingg. Check out the book "Gypsy Picking" by Michael Horowitz!

To me these are excellent musicians - undoubtedly - but as i often do i wish they'd stay more to the "original" (Manha de Carnaval). i realize there are many arrangements and different versions of those arrangements and so on but i guess i would prefer such talented improvisation be applied to their own original work? There's always the delicate balance of art and ego - i'm not a hater, just a lover of the Muse. This is certainly entertaining but i wouldn't call it haunting, like the original. Manha is unforgettable to most and stays with one forever, likely the reason this group, like so many, had to have a go at it.

I really do not enjoy when virtuosity overwhelms the general musicality and dominates music, especially with pieces that have a sensitive, touching or romantic vibe.
"Black Orpheus" did not need this kind of guitar show off, period.
