Check before you order filters. Some are non removable. The air box is a sealed unit.
David Ehrhart 8
You are correct, mines is sealed.
Thats an important tip
03 and newer do not have filters.
You are right my 2003 chevy 2500 HD that I bought new has a sealed unit. It has the dual climate co troll in it! I just thought after 16yrs I'd change it but it'll remain as is.
Wish I had seen this years ago! Another little tip I learned when changing the filters on my â02⊠When removing the 7mm screws on the access cover, take out the 2 screws that are easily accessible. But for that 3rd screw thatâs harder to get to above the âhumpâ on the floor, DO NOT totally remove the screw. Just loosen it enough to swing the cover out of the way to access the filters. Save yourself a lot of time and headaches trying to rethread that 3rd screw.
On mine the 3rd (difficult) screw was missing, so after changing the filters and reinstalling the two easily-accessible screws, I inserted a carpenterâs wedge between the carpeting and the bottom of the cover to snug it up. Next time I need to change these filters Iâll simply remove the wedge, remove the 2 easy screws and be done with the task in under 15 minutes.
Thank you for the tips. Fixing to replace cabin filters on my 2000 Silverado. 102,xxx on the odometer. I'm sure it's bad. Many thanks
On my truck when I got the the third screw, the one that is hard to get to I did one swift yank, pulled the cover off around the screw, did the air filter then put it back up with only 2 screws instead of three, now I never have to deal with that headache or think twice about it again
Never had to remove the 3rd screw either, just make sure you donât rip the plastic
How important is the access cover? Previous owner must have thrown it away or possibly stripped the screws I have no idea. But itâs not there anymore lol
Had a real mouse problem because the 2002 sat unused for a long time. The smell was about as bad as a box of cat pee. Paid to have the system cleaned out, but the smell was still so bad my wife wouldn't ride in the truck. Check the repair order and noticed they hadn't replaced the cabin filters. Followed your instructions and it was a no brainer. Gonna visit the shop this afternoon and show them the pictures. Thanks a lot Tony.
Was there a mouse nest? If so how did you get it out?
You paid to have the system cleaned and they didn't do the main thing to clean the system?
Sounds like they sprayed some Simple Green in the vents and charged you.
air pressure coming from my 2001 tahoe vents was not much at all. watched your video & bought some filters.. now she's blowing like a high priced hooker... thanks buddy
Haha that's awesome, glad to help man!
" blowing like a high priced hooker " Love it!! Gotta remember that one.
Jeremy Stone best comment ever!
love it lol
I have that same issue with my 01 Silverado, hardly no air flow, from my a/c vents, I'm gonna check my truck tomorrow and replace if my truck has these filters!!!
Thanks so much for this video, it's just what I needed! I already had bought the filters months ago but was dreading trying to figure it out. Thanks to your video, it was super easy. Looks like it was changed once in it's life, a 1999 Silverado, because the 2nd screw from the left was missing. (The one closest to the center tunnel that is hardest to get to). But this is the first time I've changed it since I've had the truck in 2010. TONS of leaves, dirt, pine needles etc. It blows twice as powerfully now! Thanks!!!
Thanks a lot, I left the driver side screw only partially loosened and it worked out great. My old filters weren't quite as bad as yours but still definitely in need of changing, I'm glad to have new ones in there.
Iâm so happy I happened upon your video! I followed what you did on my 2001 Chevy Silverado 1500 that my dad left me. It was an Arizona truck on 5 acres of desert. I think 2 of those acres came out when I pulled the 2 filters out!! I had already replaced 2 actuators and that helped with the air flow a tiny bit but when I turned on the air after replacing the filters and vacuuming a ton of sand, it about blew my doors off! Lol ( more of a p.g. Version of your other commenter!đ) thank you!
Thank you for this video. I was just going through some random videos when your video had came up on my rotation. I had never given any thought that my 2001 Suburban that I had bought two months ago would have cabin air filters. But thanks to your video, not only did I discover that I did have these filters, but also had given me the knowledge to know where they were, and how to remove them. I'm now on my way to the parts store to pick up a set. My old ones were very dirty, but I could tell that they've been replaced before.
So I just replaced my cabin filters, easy job.. but I went with the K&N cabin filters, so instead of throwing them away, I just wash dry re-oil and reuse.. I had already purchased the K&N engine air filter and have had so much luck with it and saved a lot of money. I'm glad to find they made the cabin filters for my truck.
@@brians.1247 Iâve seen those but have not tried them!
@TonyTheTruckGuy a little bit on the expensive side but worth the extra money when your not buying filter after filter and my experience with them is they seem to let air flow better..I have a flow meter on my air box since I have used the K&N filter it shows that there is better air flow..
@@brians.1247 Yeah, the reusable filters are worth it if you intend to keep the vehicle for a long time.
@TonyTheTruckGuy yeah, my 2001 chevrolet silverado 2500hd has been around a while. I love the truck, thought .it has always been there when I need it ..245000 and still going strong.
Thank you so much! Not that long ago our car parts shops would help those of us, not mechanics, give us info or come out and help install the small things for us. Not anymore. Because of this video I'm saving $$ installing my filters myself!
Unbelieveable ! Even the GM dealer told me that my 2001 Silverado 2500 diesel truck had no cabin filters at all and there wasn't anything to clean or replace. I will take that panel and area apart and change the filters myself. BIG thanks for this video...really well done! Tim in Colorado
Yeah Iâd be surprised if your truck didnât have them. I did find out after making this video that the 03-13 trucks donât have them for some reason. But being an â01, you should have them. Glad to help! Youâll have to let me know if you indeed have them or not.
@timgreenshields2431 Remember if the manufacturer did a cabin filter delete, which is unlikely for an 01 the there is a kit you buy to be able to add the cabin filters. I think they sealed the units in newer models because they didn't expect someone to keep the vehicle long enough to have issues, but if it happens that the owner of the truck starts to notice the air coming out the vents is weak then having access to that spot where the cabin filers would go would be a plus. Besides that, if you look at that spot right below your windshield, you will see the vent cover that is where air enters the vehicle when you have your blower on.. Have you noticed all the debris, dirt ,pine needles, bug Carcasses. That could be in the fresh air system of your truck. It's a nice thing to know that all I have to do is remove a cover, take out the dirty filters, clean my K&N cabin filters, dry them an oil them with the K&N filer oil, and then reinstall them and also clean the area that the filters sit in. Now imagine what could be in there. If the unit is sealed
I have a 1999 GMC Sierra 1500 w/ 5.3L Vortec V8. Your instructional video was super helpful! Thanks for taking the time to post this video!
Glad to help, thanks for the positive feedback!
Amazing!!! Thank you! I've been having issues with our GMC's A/C air flow ever since I bought this thing second hand. I'm going to do this right away.
Very Helpful. I was able to install my filters in about as much time as it took to watch the video.
Thank You Much! Only other thing i used was an ice pick from the bottom to help get the second filter out. It was filthy ad wedged in there pretty good.
Great simple step by step. Thx with growing cost on repairs the ones that are able to be done by the owner these kinds of videos are very helpful.
Thanks a million for the video. Got up yesterday morning to go on a road trip with our 2002 GMC. The outside temperature was 20 degrees F. Started the truck to warm it up and 15 minutes later it was still cold as ice inside. There wasn't enough air coming out of the vents to blow a match out. The manual was next to useless on how to locate the cabin filter let alone replace it. Thanks to your video we are back in business and air through the vents is back to normal
Glad this resolved your issue! Thanks for the feedback!
THANKS!!!! I had no idea that my truck like yours even had inside filters like that!!!
Make sure you order the two small filters. For some reason, the filter book at my local O'Reilly's sells a single filter for my 2002 Dirty that is LARGER than the two original filters combined and the way you have to angle the filters up and back into the housing will not allow the single larger filter to be pushed up in there. I thought maybe they figgered out some economical way to turn the two filters into a single filter, so I bought it after visually checking. It's close, but not correct. You need the two smaller filters. Now I gotta go back. Because there's no such thing as a single trip to the gottdang parts house.
I was able to find and replace my cabin filters. Though mine were way more dirtier including pine needles.
Not anymore, I will be changing when I do a oil change.
Thank You, you were a big help. : )
Once a year is fine . No need to buy them 3-4 times a year
Best how to video, I just did my filters after watching this video, Thanks for the tips, made my day much easier.
Thank you!
Thanks for the video! I just removed the 2 screw in the passenger footwell and pushed the cover down and and put my filters in at an angle and it worked great. My filters were the originals from 1999 and OMG were they nasty. I didn't even know it had cabin air filters.
How much do the filters cost?
Why anyone would dislike this video is beyond me. This was a perfect how to video. Awesome job!!
Haha thanks! Iâll never know why, I thing some people just hit dislike because they can đ
Ainât that the friggin truth!!
I just replaced the filters on my 2001 Silverado and this video was very helpful. My truck doesn't have the center console as the one in the Video and it has a 4th screw holding in the cover that was on the far end of the drivers side. Other than that, everything went just great. Turning on the blower motor will blow out the leaves that are still in the duct and easy to vacuum up afterwards.
Mine doesnt have center console either
Very much appreciated video to help me replace the 2 filters in my 2001 GMC Sierra C3. That 3rd screw nearest the driver's side was evil and I could not get the socket on it, but I was able to leave it in place and with the other 2 removed, could get behind the panel and remove the smaller screw holding the filter cover. Job accomplished!!
Evil screw đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł I'm using this everytime I come across difficult screw or screw bolt
Perfect! Thank you. Iâll add, turning on the blower to clear out the debris worked great for me. It blew everything out, across my floormat, and right out the door. đđđ»
Edited to add: 2002 GMC Sierra 2500HD Duramax 4x4 (for reference)
18 years old with my truck and when I asked where the filter was they always told me in the glove compartment and I never found it now I think itâs time to change it. Thank you đ
@kifenlife4888 I was 32 years old when I got my 01 chevrolet silverado 2500hd thousands of miles 22 years later, and I'm still driving it. Yes, I've put some parts in it like a starter and alternator, but most of all, I've used full synthetic royal purple oil with every oil change, and i keep up on all the maintenance . Still drives like the day I bought it.
Thanks for the video.I am getting ready to change the cabin filters on a 1999 silverado.
Your wife owes me a reach around
Thanks for the how to video, didnât know my truck had them until one of my friends was talking about changing his in his truck. Started searching UTube and your video popped right up. Plan on changing them this weekend, it ought to be good, brought the truck new in 1999, and they have never been changed.
Jim Newt so did you changed them?
I changed them about a week along with having my AC serviced, canât tell you how much I enjoy my old truck not that i have plenty of cold clean air blowing out my cab vents again, thanks again for your video.
Thatâs you I was stressing out why my ax was blowing really low once I seen your video installed the new cabin filter the ac blew strong ! Thank you
One of the best instructional videos I've ever seen. I would have never found those filters without this video. Changed mine and they were dirtier than yours. I bought the truck new in 01 and they had never been changed.
Iâm glad I was able to help you get them dirty things changed haha
Your video was great helped me bigtime, thanks Tony
Great video. Thanks for calling out sizes of hex screws. It was nice to have the right sockets and wrenches in hand when starting this project.
Didn't even know my truck had cabin filters. I will be checking this out asap!
Thanks
Man thanks for the vid my guy. During my process I only had to remove one screw that was holding the filters access door (7mm screw). I have cleaner air, better air flow! 100 đđđ.
Thanks Tony nice video and great illustration how to change filters.
2001 Tahoe as ipulled the back filter I heard a GROWL !! lol Thanks for this I was breathing so much crap that I wondered why Iwas always sneezing and ruinny nosedwith the blower on full Thanks!
Thanks Tony, who knew my truck had a cabin filter?!?!?!?!?!?! You da man....
Very helpful video, Iâll definitely be doing this on my 2002 Silverado tomorrow when the auto parts store opens up
Thank for making this. Great help!
Outstanding instructions! Thank you!
Youâre very welcome!
I replaced my cabin filters this afternoon. Your right, they really needed changing. That transmission hump screw was hard to re-seat I used a small mirror to see where the hole was lined up and a bit of trimmed blue tape, I taped it to the socket. Lucky for me, I caught it the first try. Your instruction video was spot on. Now I have strong blowing fresh air. :)
Glad to hear. And yeah, that one screw proved to be a fight haha
Thank you for this post. I thought my 2001 Yukon did not have a cabin filter until I saw your video. My filters were there for 16 years, quite dirty. Thanks again, your video was Very nicely done.
Glad I could help!
Thanks! I just figured my truck didn't have a cabin air filter. . . ! But, since I've got have the dash removed right now anyway, this will be a great time to check this out.
Great video!
Food for thought: Consider placing a towel or tarp, etc. on floorboard to prevent mess, while performing a procedure such as this. Also, a request to Santa for a air compressor would help on removing all the crapola hiding in those tight, hard to reach spaces! đđ
Thanks for the video. I can already hear my truck breathing a sigh of relief!đđ€Ł
Or just use a can of compressed air ti blow it out
A can of compressed air can do the trick ..the kind used to get the dust from between the keys on a computer keyboard
Itâs also a good idea to spray some Lysol when the filters are out after you vacuum all the shit out, kill all the molds, and bacteria in that chamber.
Smells purty tooo
Good idea!
Wow I never even knew there was in cab filters until seeing your video, you sir have taught a old dog a new trick .
Best thing about these trucks are they are always so simple to fix! Appreciate you for the video đ«Ą
Most of the time haha. Glad I could help!
Bought A new 2001 Silverado Back In 01â and sold it in 2014 never changed mine or even knew it had them lmao!!!
Great information helped alot thank you for your time. A+++++
You made a nice video! Good explanation, good presentation. I did mine, I installed a K & N, it actually slows the air flow a bit more than the cheaper ones so something to keep in mind. Put a towel down to catch the garbage and shake it out in the trash can later. Spray lysol and make sure debris is removed. Again, good video!
Good ideas! Thank you!
I canât wait to change these out now! My passenger side does not blow at all on my 02 I thought my vents were clogged up.Thanks for this great videođđ»
Humberto cantu did it help?
Jacob Nichols Yes sir it made a HUGE difference l
Thanks for doing that one handed.
Never would have known about these......... Cabin filters who'da thunk? Thanks for the heads-up.
Thanks, did not know that there are 2 filters up in there. Replaced both after watching video with no issues. Thanks!
Glad to help!
I replaced my and I removed only the first two bolts, with the third one in place, still allowed me to lower the kick plate and replaced the two filters. Thanks for the video!!
Yeah that 3rd one is a bear haha. Glad to help!
Where I live rodents love to nest in those as well. Thank you, great video
Wow! Big thanks on this one! I'm sure mine has racoons and squirrels in it by now ! Lol
Thanks again,
>>>~ïżŠ~~>
Maybe đđđđđđđđđ too
This is a good primer on this procedure. I left the nut in by the console just loosened it some. The nuts are a pain to get started when re-tightening I eyeballed it and it helpedâŠMy filters were black as sin, blows better now for sure. Easy 5 minute deal and $18 on Amazon for filters!
Thanks for the great instructions. This is going to be my next project......
Gotta love the metric/sae mix of bolts
most likely the 7/32 is actually a 5.5mm socket
Feel like a idiot. Didnât realize I had these. Thatâs my next project.
Iâd recommend leaving the screw to the far drivers side in but just loosen it. Itâs a huge pain to get back in and just loosening it will allow you to work around the cover.
Tony The Truck Guy Ok. Thanks. I will do that.
MrHuckabst Same
Thank you for the tip! I will do that for sure.
Short and to the point thanksđđđ
Excellent video also on the fram filters I purchased they had a foam pad around the outside. This made sliding the second filter in difficult due to the foam catching on each other. Remedied it by tearing off a piece of the box the width of the filter and slid it up against the first filter then the second one slid in smooth. Then remove the card
works great nice to listen while watching the proper way to change cabin filters thanks
This does not apply to the 2003 models. Apparently the cabin air filter was omitted from the 2003-2013 models.
My 2003 has one. Odd. I'm the original owner too.
My 2007 sierra 1500 does not have a filter
Cabin air filters were not used in gm trucks until after 2013
I'm impressed...one handed.
Hahaha, unfortunately thatâs how a lot of my videos are made.
I also want to thank you for the 'here it is' and how to replace it' help you've given this old lady. Again. thanks.
No problem at all, here to help!
Thanks for the video
I am about to check my own .. surely I have a rat nest down there because its been a while without replace the filters but I saw your video and some of the comments it gonna be a real help to replace it well . Thanks buddy.
Awesome! So happy i saw this. Gonna go get filters today and get her done
Found a BUNCH of bird seeds and corn in mine.... along with a few other random pieces of trash and lint. Not sure how it got clogged up so much but it blows 10x harder and I havenât put the new filters in. Thanks!
Haha yeah, you'll find some mysterious things in there sometimes. Glad to help!
turning the blower on doesnt get all the crap out. I did that before i removed the blower motor. but when i took the blower motor/fan out, I had all kinds of leaves and debris stuck inside fan basket, as well as, the fan blades themselves were caked with gunk and dirt. I'm sure all this reduced airflow as well. Just a good idea to remove blower motor and clean the fins at the same time you replace the filters.
I used to have a 98 Silverado that did not have air filters. I wish that it did because it was a lot of work cleaning the core with a brush and a water hose. I now have a 2001 Sierra and it does have a filter. I took it out and replaced it. The good news is with the filter vs no filter it saved me a ton of time and cleaning the core. Replacing is the easy part. Putting the cover back on and alining the screws was a bear. I ended up just leaving the middle screws out and only putting the end screws to the cover back on. It works fine and it's tight enough without any rattling noise. Good luck to anyone trying to put the cover back on with all the screws. Have fun!
This fixed my 02. Thanks much for your video.
May the General Motors engineers spend eternity in purgatory having to change these filters a millions times. Then they may come up with an easier design next time.
THAT MY BROTHER WOULD BE 2 EASY.
Keith Cronk v
Yes they came up with no way to change it anymore a sealed box in the 2004-2005
Just cut it open and add the cover from the 2003 & earlier trucks.
yep 4 screws every 4 years. what where they thinking
way better than 1 Aautos vid
Haha I actually came across theirs after making this. I'm glad it helped!
Thanks for the video. I couldn't do it without this video
Man thank you! Saved me $$$ New subscriber
Clean that grill with a toothbrush. It will reach those difficult spots.
Thatâs an evaporator. Not a grill.
đđ»đđ»đđ»
Great video. I have a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado. Been having the same problem. Full of Freon. But still not very Cool. Bet this is my problem. Glad I found your video and how to fix. Thank you.
Excellent video. Keep up the great work. Thank you for sharing. đ
2003 silverados or sierra don't have cabin filters every other year does
Yeah I changed the video title, someone informed me the other day that the 03-07 doesn't have them.
Thanks for coming in and informing us the info. It saved me a trip and the thing of removing and finding out I didn't need it. lol Thanks again. lol
Yep. 03 to 07 bean counters got rid of them. Not sure about 08 and up.
thank you sir
You're very welcome!
Nice work if itâs your vehicle and you donât mind the work. This filter is so inaccessible it would seem like they were never meant for service. That standard socket would have been my giveaway. Good vid
I am very glad that you made this video. I was getting very little airflow out of my Yukon XL. I didn't even know that I had cabin filters. My filters looked worse than your filters.
Game changer!
@@TonyTheTruckGuy absolutely.
THANK YOU EVERYBODY FOR 1M VIEWS!
I found a rat in mine, dead, it was hard as wood...
thank you so much for making this video I have a 2001 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD my mechanic was trying to tell me there was no cabin filter another mechanic was saying maybe the reason why my air conditioner doesn't work consistently is because the filters are dirty but anyway thank you thank you
I had low cooling after 5+ years of owning my 2001 K2500HD Chevy crew cab and water would drain out of the evaporator core for a half hour when I stopped on vacation for breaks and meals. Then it would work fine again for an hour or two.
I looked in the operator's manual and sure enough, they said it had a cabin air filter (actually 2 of them). Replaced them and it works like new. Your video explains exactly how to access them through the bottom cover of the HVAC system.
At just over 10 years old, I have about 115,000 miles on it and still the factory brakes are about half worn out! It's my family station wagon and construction vehicle.
Sounds like your evaporator was icing up
I just changed mine yesterday it was filthy!!!!! Holy fuck there had to have been 2 pounds of debree inside it.
Hahaha! Yeah they get ignored.
Media Guy 5

62 years old and worked on trucks for years and I didn't know they had filters , I thought mine was a fresh air gate not working
You learn something new every day!
Great video. In all honesty, this is probably the best lit under dash video I've ever seen. Now I'm gonna look through all your other vids and maybe you've had a problem with your heat control gate motor. Fingers crossed...
Haha thanks. Iâll save you some timeâŠ..unfortunately for you, I do not have any heater related videos for this truck as I havenât had any issues other than the heater core itself getting plugged up. Thereâs gotta be a few videos on CZcams though related to what youâre looking for though.
I recently got a 99 sierra and had this problem. This video really does give helpful info, step by step on how to fix this problem.
I had dust, dirt, leaves, seed pods, an illegal alien, and three small squirrels come out of mine.
đ€Ł
Thanks for the useful instructions, I am in need to replace my cabin filters, low air coming out from the vents, I haven't changed them ever since I got my truck, it's a 2000 Chevy Tahoe, damn I can't wait to see how them filters look like! lol!!!!
I'm sure they will be filthy haha. I'd recommend not completely pulling the furthest screw towards the drivers side. Huge pain to get in.
Excellent instructions. Took me 20 minutes. Thanks 4 the info
Thanks for the positive feedback! Glad to help.
Good video, but that cover isn't necessary. I took mine off and kept it off cause its a pain in the ass
đ yeah just for looks. I found out AFTER doing the job that itâs way easier to leave the far drivers side screw loose, rather than removing it.
you're not kidding! I changed my cabin filters and found that out. When I was trying to diagnose my lack of heat, I took the cover off again. It was such a paint to get the holes to line up (at least on mine it was LOL)
I never knew mine was missing until I was replacing some parts. Guy before me must've taken it off. Glad he did, it saved me some time.
I just did mine and had a hell of time getting the middle screws to line up. Got frustrated and just left those out. I just used the to end screws and it holds it up no problem and no rattling noise.@@georgew84
No wonder when I turn on my AC in my truck air blows slow đ
That wasnt the AC evap like he said, that is the heater core. The evaporator is up front under the grill
No, the thing up by the grille is the condenser. The evaporator is by the heater core.
Tony thank you for this video. I changed mine today and I found your video helpful. My suggestion would be to only remove the 2 screws on the kick plate closest to the passenger door and pull it down, the one screw by the console was too difficult for me.
Yep.... I had many cuss words trying to finagle that far drivers side one back in lol. I'm just the kind of person that wants EVERYTHING out of the way when I work on something so that's why I pulled all 3 to get the HVAC cover completely out of the way but yes, that's not a bad idea at all.
Great video!! Nice fun project
03-07 gmc sierra does not have this
You are correct, thanks for the heads up. I wasn't sure on this one so I just kind of figured they did since they're the same body style. Very strange GM went away with them in '03.
I know, I replaced my blower motor resistor a while back and it gave me a small view of the evaporator coil. I got some no rinse coil cleaner and sprayed it good, let it sit and then ran the air. Bubbles blew out of my supply vents into the cab for a while but it works much better ever since.
suf79 hyhh
suf79 my 04 Silverado doesn't either but after seeing this it will have wonder where she keeps her Dremel tool
Thanks for the very well done video, please make more about 2002 diesel silverados!!
Dude! Mine was full of crap!!! Thanks dude!
Thanks man I did like your video said to do.
Everything Went smooth!!! đș
Glad I could help! Well done!
