Imagine not leaving your house or seeing your friends for years. Imagine not bathing in nearly that long because your body had grown so enormous that it could no longer fit in the shower. Imagine looking down at the scale and seeing the number 653 staring back at you.
That's where Bodybuilding.com forum member Jesse Shand found himself in 2013. By then, he had given up on the idea of living a normal life-at least by society's definition of "normal."
"I spent my days playing video games and trolling the Internet," remembers Jesse. "I was just all negativity, all of the time."
Jesse's heaviest recorded weight was 653 pounds, but he probably weighed quite a bit more than that. He could only find a scale big enough to weigh himself with after losing weight for two months.
The only thing more remarkable about the amount of weight Jesse lost-300 pounds-is the way he lost it-through help from strangers on the Bodybuilding.com forums.
| 300 Pounds Down |
Remarkably, Jesse's transformation started by accident. "It started off as nothing more than an ill-fated attempt to get a rise out of bodybuilding types," he recalls. Jesse created a thread called "Ask the fattest man on the misc [sub-forum] anything," posted photos of his then-obese body, and waited, fully expecting-almost inviting-a backlash.
What happened instead set the wheels of change in motion.
"[My plan] 'backfired' on me, and people started to try to convince me that it wasn't too late, that even at my weight, all was not lost," remembers Jesse. "I didn't want to hear it and made my usual excuses, like not having enough money for groceries or lacking the motivation. But the members of the thread didn't accept my excuses and even offered advice on how it could be done. They walked me through it, provided me with a platform to get feedback and take baby steps, and the rest is history!"
"It really showed me that even on the Internet, the kindness of strangers can completely change your life. It helped me to realize that I had something to fight for," Jesse says of his Bodybuilding.com comrades. "They're the ones who took me under their wings and believed in me long before I believed in myself."

At least he still had his sense of humor about himself...I think that is important when facing such an extreme endeavor.
Believe in what you want Kasey, and you'll know its possible. You got this 👍👊
Lol I loved that. Dude has a great sense of humor.
I went from 153 to 225 in a span of ~2 years. I’m 5’9 so just imagine how 225 pounds looks on a 5’9 frame. Not to great.. I gained 30 pounds in 3 months at one point. I’ve been hitting the gym doing 15-30 minutes of cardio everyday, and then hitting chest and triceps on one day, back on biceps on another, etc. 5x’s a week for the past 5 weeks, and I’m currently weighing ~202. I went from eating roughly +3,500 calories a day, to now eating 1,800-2,000 a day. I can’t lie, I feel much better. Gained a lot of muscle, and lost a lot of fat. Losing weight has been the best thing I’ve been able to do this far. It’s not easy. Every single day I think about skipping the gym, but I push through, and I’ve never felt better. Feels awesome! 👌🏼💪🏼

As someone that’s been actively weight training for 22 years, this is what we do. Us real weight lifters hate the “meatheads” as much as anyone else. We hate the douchebags that fill our community. Us real active working out people will welcome people like him with open arms. We want to help him and we want to see people like him succeed. And we want the douchebag meatheads out of our community as much as anyone else does.
when i read this i have a lump in my throat, i have lost about 40kg in the past 3 months and need to lose another 40kg - more like 50. i don't dare go into a gym at all, but reading this gives me hope that it will work eventually. I'm at a point where I could do "more" - so far it went without, but I think now some help and guidance would be pretty good and therefore the studio.
@@Gaiddan well with me I go to the gym because I weight train, but if the gym isn’t your thing there’s lots of ways to exercise. For example buy some leg weights from Amazon, strap them to your legs and walk around the block once or twice. Or even buy a weight belt for your waist and do normal chores while wearing it. And each day keep pushing yourself further and further.

Now THIS is body positivity!!!! STOP NORMALIZING OBESITY. This man kicked his own ass into gear and put in the work. Fat acceptance is enabling obesity and normalizing giving up. Kudos to this man. That is hard work!
People need to understand the difference between acknowledging that obesity is bad and thinking that obese people are bad.
word
I wouldn’t normalize it. But lots of underlying factors. Many who were abused as kids end up obese. It’s a psychological and physical problem.
Fat acceptance is not accepting fat. It is accepting fat people in a way that you don't bully them and just mind your own business. You have nothing to do with other people's bodies. Only they can get to the point of wanting to lose weight, and strangely, sad and bullied people get to this point more slowly.
@vitaygeorgina That's not what fat acceptance people talk about. They calling me an oppressor for saying being fat is unattractive.
you know its wonderful when people actually support each other.. everyone who motivated this man should feel really good about them selves.. you pretty much saved his life and prevented an early grave.. and good on jesse for finally getting up and makeing a change.. we are all proud of you my man

Man, this video just made me a grown up man cry like a child. To those who keep asking, I haven't gotten better. Im not comfortable talking about what weight I am but I've gone the wrong direction. Ill be honest with it. I go on diets and its slowly helping, I've lost 15 pounds from my highest ever weight. thank you for reminding me almost daily. just because I failed once doesn't mean I can never reach my goal.

God I’m proud of this guy. If you ever struggled with weight you understand how hard it is to have consistency like this.
i have struggled for the last 12 years or so. My all time weight was 300 about 10 years ago, I then gradually lost weight and got down to 170. My max weigh since then is 240 and currently sit at 230. I want to get back down to 170 once and for all and never gain weight again - atleast not fat, but muscle. I'm doing a lot of weight lifting now so It's good if I gain weight in muscle but the problem is the fat does not seem to want to go away. 4 months into a new workout routine I've lost no weight at all and it doesn't seem any fat has gone away yet. I really understand the struggle.
He gained most of it back

I commend him for bettering him self. I was never a fat person but after high school I started gaining weight gradually and with every few lbs gained I would say "oh I'm gonna start loosing weight". It's been 5 years and still nothing. I reached a breaking point when I weighed 220 lbs at 166cm. I tried intermittent fasting and that was working well for me but eventually I got bored of that. I tried water fasting and I would loose like 10 lbs in 3 days but the thing is the minute I ate food I gained that weigh back. My problem is controlling my eating. My highest weight in October 2021 was 235 lbs and I hated the way I looked. I was so disgusted. Without even realizing it I lost 26 lbs in 2 months. I didn't even realize that my eating habit had changed. I stopped using sugar, I limited my junk food and drank predominatly water. 2 days after I gain 2lbs and am currently at 211 lbs. This video is so inspiring and also gives me the motivation I need to get off my ass and do something. I'm so scared that I'll keep putting it off and before you know it I'm 300lbs. He told her that that was amount of weight she loss in fat and 4 sticks of butter is 1 pound. She was surprised and stared at the butter and was no longer discouraged anymore. He also commented that she now lost over 100 pounds using this thought of 1 pound = 4 sticks of butter. Thank you for reading ❤️😃.

true, you don't need motivation,, motivation will burn out after a week or a month, you need discipline, be consistent, no excuses, workout even if you had a harsh day, keep the diet no matter what, cause once you start to fail, it will exponetially grow until you go back from where you started
"Start my cutting phase after a successful 25 year bulking phase." hahahah :'D
He's got great personality :D
really ...dat line made me laugh and cry same time
I laughed too! haha
Four aspects of fitness:
1.Rest/Recovery
2.Nutrition
3.Exercise (duh)
4.Personality (motivation, optimism, etc.)
*I'd say that a healthy diet is even 90% of the weight control game.*
*But overall weight control is 100% your #4: the mindset. Starting a healthy regimen is hard for many people. Much harder once you start it to **_maintain_** that consistency and that, holy shit, I failed so many times! So many distractions, life priorities, work but in reality, it's mostly excuses ie weak mentality.*
*Not just for weight control, ANY new venture to better one's life ie learning guitar, language, Internet business, etc... It's SO easy to invent some bullshit excuses and procrastinate, believe you me, I have a doctorate in that foul habit! MINDSET, man, THE GODDAMN MINDSET!*
*Fortunately, like any muscle, a strong mindset CAN be trained!*
Thank you for sharing this, Jesse. I needed it just now. And thanks to all of you who encouraged a guy who thought he was down and out. Because Jesse told his story in such detail, he and all of you will empower people you've never met.
Fair play to you! You’ve proven to everyone else and more importantly, proven to yourself that you can lose weight. No excuses, no blaming your thyroid and slow metabolism. You simply got on with the task in hand and you did it. I can’t imagine how proud you must be of yourself ❤ well done 👌
And of course we are all proud and cheering him on! He is a champ!
Uhhhh... does everyone just ignore that he called himself wetbreasts
In all fairness, his breasts were most likely wet.
Underboob sweat
If i was that heavy, that could be a gopd motivator to help lose it
Omg I found my potato brethren brother
He now changed his name to WettyB
I have a son who is very overweight and housebound for years. I sent him this video. I pray he is encouraged to start now with caring about himself and know that there are people out there who will care about him, help him lose weight...he can do it!
I wish Jessie would contact him. He is 28 yrs old and in his own mental prison. Please pray for my son. Thank you.
Wow u failed your child. Should have raised him better and made his education a priority when u had him, instead of letting him do whatever he wanted. You caused the problem, now suffer the consequences!
(Edit)- looking back at this 7 months after posting all these comments , damn I was an asshole in this comment. Didn’t mean to question LL’s upbringing
@@Hr-pn1vm Wow, you a certainly an uninformed, insensitive jerk, who hasn't a clue of my son's circumstances. Snap judgenents are what you are all about. Your ego must be off the charts! Why spread hatred toward others? Do everyone a favor and keep your disrespectful comments to yourself.
Hr27 damn, you’re just not that smart aren’t you, education can’t really help yourself, because the kid has to learn most of the things alone. I was skinny when I was little and I got fat when I turned seven, it was not my parents failing me, they did all fine, I failed myself. I am 214 pound right now and I want to go down to 200. Anyways, this man is doing what he can to help his child, but he can’t help him if the son can’t help himself. Btw do you have a kid, because of the way you acted I don’t think you are even marry.
L L don’t worry man, you’re doing what you can, you can’t really help your son if he can’t help himself.
LL Call me a jerk I don’t care, at least I didn’t fail my kids. And btw, I’m not hating on your kid, I’m telling you the harsh reality of your choices
Now, that's one great and powerful story. Congrats to Jesse and also to all those who helped him along the way.
as a bigger person myself this actually gives me hope not only does seeing the weight loss give me hope that i can actually do it but seeing a community of bodybuilders not be the stereotypical fatphobic scumbags you expect really helps remind me that there's good people in this world and then it's worth trying to get better
I'm just blown away by his courage! I lost 164lbs over 2yrs. And there's no way I could have done it in the public eye. If you've never been obese, you can't imagine the shame that it brings. Bravo to him 👏
good for you, beautiful!! i could never do it in public either. and i think a strong point to make is it's not just "obese" people that feel embarrassed or shamed in public, i'm maybe only 30-40lbs away from my healthy weight and going in public is terrifying to me. i don't want to run into anyone i knew when i was a healthy weight. i feel like even the people i don't know are judging me - why is she buying sushi, why is she buying alcohol, why this why not that? i get flushed every time i pay for food or drinks because i know what the other person is thinking, because i HAVE been that toxic, judgemental person on the other end wondering why people were so fat. i had a VERY fast metabolism until the age of maybe 23-25. i'm 28 now and trying to lose 30lbs again. even though i'm not classified as obese, i still feel like i am.
@@ellamay6405 Oh sweet girl, get those toxic thoughts out of your mind! The honest truth is that 90% of the population are so self absorbed and wrapped up in their own drama that they don't even realize there's another human in front of them so don't worry about what that rando cashier or waitress might be thinking about what you're putting in your body and truly screw the other 10% that may have those nasty thoughts in their minds, because they aren't your friends or family and will probably never really impact your life in any true way unless you give them that power. You are struggling with a very common problem when people have fast metabolisms when they are teens and young 20's and then all of a sudden their metabolisms slow down and the lifestyle they are used to starts to show around the middle, booty and thighs. Please don't be so hard on yourself, you're still so young and have a long journey ahead of you. Take your time and do it at your own pace. If you're ever struggling shoot me a message, I don't know if I'll have the answer but I'll sure know where you're coming from.
@@kellysubocz8263 i woke up so much more depressed & angry than usual this morning because i lost my job and the scummy boss who did me wrong got away with everything she did to me, so i know everytime they see me bike past them they're probably laughing at me and how much of a loser i am. i don't want that victim mentality, it's just that i thought that family sized workplace was my family and friends, but they're very toxic too. i don't know hot to NOT give them the power i think that's my problem. how do you do it? how do you not care? but honestly your message was so compassionate (i don't receive that very often) and it actually made me cry because it's so full of love. thank you so much for taking the time to write back to me; you have no idea how much that means. i hope you're having a beautiful healthy and happy day, and i would love to message you - i'm just not sure how to on here lol but thank you for the love
@@ellamay6405 oh sweet little one, no you've got it all wrong! You were set free from those abusers, manipulators, and straight up ass wipes. They are stuck in there sad little existences and now you get to fly free making anything you possibly hope to be in this world a reality. You are the creator of your reality, not the world or other people, just you! So now you're going to stop and think long and hard on what you want to be in this life, no matter how crazy or far fetched. Then you're going to come up with a detailed plan on what you think needs to happen step by step to achieve that reality and if you have someone you trust in telling your plan to, they can maybe help you with some of the steps that you may not have thought of but need to take to get there. Often two heads are better than one. Then you put your foot out and take the first step of your journey! Now don't get me wrong, it's gonna be hard as shit to make your new reality all that you want it to be but every time you fall off the path you get your plan back out, figure out where you screwed up, learn from it, and get back on the path. I have hope for you little one because the greatest regret in life isn't striving to make your wildest dreams come true and not quite getting them, it's waiting for life to come to you, to have circumstances dictate your life's trajectory and feeling helpless to change the fact! I'm always here if you need a sounding board, Kelly Subocz on Facebook messenger.

Very inspiring story
This is such an inspirational story. I have been over weight since I was a teenager. I remember crying because I was up to 170-180, now I would love to be that weight. I finally got up to 285 lbs. I have try so many times to.lose the weight, then I would stop. I'm 56 yo now and my goal is 199 and I am 3 lbs away. Just being under 200 will be such a boost for me. My final goal is 130. I wish I could have done while I was young I sometimes wonder, what's the use now, but it's not about how I look anymore, it's about how I am going to feel WHEN it happens. I always hated when people say if I could do it, anyone could do it, but Jesse Shand is one person that deserves to say that, that phrase really means something to me now.
Thanks for taking me on the journey with you Jesse. Im 51 and currently weigh 482.. I want to be 225.. Im committed and encouraged
Thanks again

Guys... I cried, I never cried to a video before. but seeing he's mom thanking all the people for saving his life just made me tear up and it felt so good!
Amen It was an Inspirational Cry for Me .
Yeah, when I saw that mom video, I started to cry also. :) I'm so happy for this man.
I don't usually cry but that part did make my eyes tear up
Oh, no. No, no, no. Nobody gets to have it both ways. He has had to show herculean effort because SHE couldn't generate a tiny bit on his behalf in his youth! She enabled the bad habits that resulted in his situation. Early on he says something like "I was always a big kid," as if it were some sort of cosmic inevitability. NO, it was some sort of parental dereliction of duty! Folks, proper parenting matters, and sometimes it ain't easy!
Yeah, I was moved through the whole thing but his mom got me and that was it.
now THIS is body positivity.
Not the bullshit that says "its okay to be fat"
Damn Right, Fat, thin, or Muscular Encourage the trajectory not the current state.
@@bilalkawsara9539 Yes! agreed
fat acceptance isnt body positivity! be healthy that’s how u should always accept urself! ❤️🤯😎
I somewhat disagree. I think that you should be able to love yourself no matter what body you're in. You should be able to see yourself as worthy of the love and respect of others.
However, part of that love should be understanding that while the body you're in does not define your worth it does define your health and quality of life and it does define the things you can wear and the things you can sit in/on.
You should have confidence in yourself and you shouldn't hate your body because it's the only one you have, you know? If you hate your body, there's less of a chance for change, less of a chance you'll want to care for it. Real body positivity is learning to love yourself as you are and taking that love and turning it towards improvement
@@elwooddows2218 I couldn't have said it better sir! I agree with you 100%

i think its pretty common that people think fit people are judgemental about unfit people (skinny or fat people), i myself thought so too. but its really just yourself who is unhappy with your own body and who judges you and you just project those feelings onto people you strive to be.
What a great story. When we give support to others we help to lift them up and help them to succeed. This guy has done an amazing job of getting his life back on track.
I'm 14 yr old weigh 260 lbs and am 5'7 I started a diet 2 weeks ago and I think I'm near 250 lbs (havent weighed yet)
You can do this!!
Keep in mind to diet healthy and not starve, work out and you can do it!!
You've got this. Eat thoughtfully, and remember food is fuel (and you need fuel c: )! See if a counselor or health teacher can help you out with what you should be eating. We're rooting for you!
260 lbs is 130kg or something right
But good luck
Good luck bro.
Well dang guys I'm sure he didn't exercise every single day out of the entire year. Especially in the beginning, I'm sure it was very difficult. Getting past that first initial soreness and doubts or fears. Are you seriously calling that out after what he's accomplished? He was 700 pounds, hadn't bathed in over a year and hadn't left the house in four. Forget about the minor flaws and look at who he was and who he is now. He's a great inspiration and motivation.
He's living proof that it is possible. Even when it seems it's far from it.You can do it.
Don't turn brain to muscle.
Prince V How can you be so dull? With every comment you post i feel like you'll punch a hole in your computer because your brain will implode if you attempt to make a meaningful retort thus you resort to witty kindergarten insults. Seriously, grow up.
Lol whatever dude
I know the first time I did flys my chest felt like it was on fire for a few days after. With squats it was the same with muscles in my legs I didn't even know I had. And this was only 4 weeks ago, after deciding I was done with being out of shape and getting some dumbbells along with a book. Once Jesse started believing in himself he had won. It took positive feedback for that to happen, but everything in life is like that.
I still have about 100lbs to go for myself, but I've made it 4 weeks so far. I think I can make it.
