EVE Explained - Why Fight?

  • Conflict is something I take a great deal of time focusing on in this channel, and it leads to one of the most common questions I get - Why do people even go to war when so much gets destroyed on both sides?
    The answer is a complicated one, and is as wrapped up in political machinations and internal scheming for power as much as the topics covered here - FCs have lead invasions in an attempt to secure their reputations over more rational reasons before - but I hope it gives some grounding in what the objectives and forces driving war in EVE are.

    Why fight? Because we want Good Fight.

      We fight because it is our nature to fight. What do we fight for, that is the question.

    Also note to anyone watching this or seeing these headlines who doesn't play EVE and is just observing: These fights do not actually cost 300k or whatnot real world dollars. To explain, there is a premium currency you can buy for real world money called Plex. Plex is marketable in-game for ISK, the standard currency, and as such can be bought and sold in ISK and not just dollars. The dollar costs of these battles are, to my understanding at least, calculated by finding how much Plex you could have acquired with the ISK value of all the destroyed assets combined, and then calculating how much that Plex would have costed if you bought it all in real money, USD in this case.

    Sebastian Junger once discussed on Ted-Ed why war is addictive -- how it gives people purpose, brotherhood, a sense of belonging, etc (czcams.com/video/TGZMSmcuiXM/video.html). I know from the stories that some EVE players definitely felt this: the Russians at J-6 for example. But the question I have is... does this apply to most EVE players who wage large-scale wars?

      @finneire1282 Před 5 lety +2

      Can't argue that. I flew out dozens of times with Spectre and others during WWB and I couldn't even entosis (no alliance). Still refer to it as WWB though cause the name is too appropriate :D

    • @Drrolfski
      @Drrolfski Před 5 lety +4

      @@finneire1282 "War of Sovless Aggression" was just a hilarious failed attempt from Goons to influence the narrative back then. Editors on their propaganda site were forbidden to use WWBee and for a while forced to use that ridiculous name until they made an another failed attempt to push through "Casino War" as the official narrative.

    sorry but when was lennykravitz ever in high sec? good vid but theres a lot of inaccurate info floating about regarding this war
    so this is basically what happened. lenny approached cfc regarding the keepstar (super highway) network he was setting up. a line member robbed him of the isk while he was trying to get into contact with someone in charge.. he laughed that off. once he proposed the keepstar network, goons took offence to it assuming it was the prestaging of an invasion so lenny funded the war so that he could build it in peace
    where did i get this info? lenny was my personal mentor/bank and fellow corpy

    There hasn't be a big war since August. It's getting quite boring!
