I once had about 12 mugs and then I decided I would only keep what fits on one small section of my cabinet; there are millions of cute mugs-but it doesn’t mean we need them. I have two holiday mugs that I bring out for Christmas. I now feel that I am truly enjoying what I have and using everything. Storing items in a box serves no purpose. Great work. Same goes for food storage containers-i only kept four corningware containers and got rid of the set of plastic. Trying to only keep what I use. I still am keeping to many sentimental items, cards photos etc old tax paperwork etc-constantly purging more and more. I have sold on Marketplace over 5k in Knick knacks, clothes, small furniture-you name it-now I tend to continually decluttering and drop off for donation a few times a month. I also had a hard time getting rid of stuff, but when I pushed myself through the uncomfortable feeling I actually felt better. I would rather have someone use the items rather than sit in my cabinets. Best of luck.

I think everyone has a different situation and their own lifestyle. For example, in my kitchen cabinet I have about 10 mugs for the three people living in the house and 4 water bottles. We use dishwasher and that allows us to always have a clean mug on hand. We have a lot more mugs and water bottles in the basement - the mugs are for serving our guests when we have a party because I don’t want to pollute with disposable plastic, and the water bottles are for my boys hiking and comping. We rarely break or loose our stuff and we had them for a long time. On the other hand, after my younger son goes to college we will get rid of some camping equipment.

I found it helpful to declutter when packing and again when unpacking. I found myself putting up what I loved and then having boxes of things I had no place for. I donated that stuff. I found it easy to donate when I did not have a spot for it.

Hi Mel, you did great staying with the decluttering and so much work with sweet hubby, as they say dream work with the dream team. 😊. I understand you saying how difficult it is going through some stuff, my husband and I did a sacrificial burning when my divorce was finalised and we burned photographs of our previous marriages it was very cathartic and in a way freeing, we've been remarried over 20 years now. ❤

The best thing I ever did was clearing out my two family rooms . Getting shut of units where stuff could be stored helped stop me collecting clutter , They take less time to clean and tidy now . Next is my clutter in the bedroom then the cellar, One tip I use as a reminder is not to buy storage until you declutter that way clutter is not just shoved into more boxes .Your doing great and giving me motivation to keep going ,x

After living in a 3rd world country and leaving behind my “I have everything” home, I was surprised at how little you need to get by on a daily basis. Now, being back in Australia over 6 years, I’ve collected a lot again, so we had a huge cull last year, including allowing 1 x mug per person, and 1 x drinking glass per person. Easier to keep clean. Try to be ruthless, it will help you in the end. But good luck and I hope you get to move earlier than later!

I noticed when the coffee mugs were being packed you said "want". I found using the statement How much do I really need, for example how many coffee mugs? is far more beneficial. We all want what we want, but it's what we need that is far more important. I have Anxiety and Depression but don't have Hoarding issues. In saying that, I downsized quite a bit even with the little I do own. It's amazing how little we do actually need. Recently we found ourselves facing Homelessness not once but twice. Luckily we managed to find a small unit. And then having to move twice in 3 months. We downsize so much, we had no choice. When it comes down to it, what we hang on to is just stuff and we really don't need it. It's more of a security blanket. I had a journal that help a lot of dark stuff from hard times. The best thing I did was setting it alight as I was able to let that time of my life go for good. Sooner or later we have to let go of what no longer serves us.

Hello, my name is Sherry. I watch your videos from North Carolina in the United States.
I really enjoy watching. I battle days of depression. Seeing you work through it. Gives me hope I can too. I am sorry you and your family are going through this stressful time. A friend of mine, her sister only has 2 months to find her family of 5 a new place to move. The landlord wants to remodel the house. And, bump the rent up a good bit. It is heartbreaking. I am a Christian. And, God has helped me so much. I pray, read the Bible, and go to church. I really do give God the credit that I am doing as good as I am. You are doing an awesome job. And, I am glad you are not just throwing things out. I will be praying that things will get easier for you all.

I definitely am a hoarder at heart to or more of a collector of certain things.
I would buy or get certain things and not want to use them because I want them looking like new. Slowly changing my mindset on that and can always purchase again (I love shopping).
Also like to save things that other people don’t want sometimes and repurpose and use elsewhere.
I hate throwing away things that could have a purpose, I saved a few containers that didn’t have lids from a recycle pile for example and are used in my organisation. I also have a decent collection of jars that are used for numerous things also.
Have a few odd collections that I have no intention on getting rid of my favourite is my appliances store catalogs (as I have interest in them) dating back to 2013 but the collection isn’t growing much now but it’s one I will have for a long time despite family members not a fan.
I often hate spaces that seem bare and empty, but also don’t like lots of clutter in spaces where you can barely see the floor or surfaces. My bedroom is often like that unfortunately and it’s an above average size room to.
Look forward to seeing what the new place will look like.

Our big move five years ago was unexpected and not wanted, like yours. We went from 2700 square feet to 1300! It forced us to be pretty ruthless in what we got rid of and it was a long arduous process. But on the other side I can tell you it was so freeing! Hi Mel. Thanks for your videos. Keep your stationery if you enjoy them. They bring you joy. I don't like decluttering my stuff but I do need to because having too much in a house with not much storage means I have random baskets things that make not much sense and general clutter amongst which there are things that just need going to the dustbin. I could start with the chest of drawers in my bedroom. I don't wear 90 per cent of the clothes in there. My several makeup bags should be next. I usually only wear makeup on holidays. I also have 2 plastic drawer cabinets into which I throw random things . My linen cabinet has things in it that haven't been used for 10 years although I have to admit when I painted my house I found plenty of sheets to use as dust covers 😂. I clean my house every week and wash the dishes and tidy each day but cleaning would be much quicker if I just decluttered. Clutter and untidiness gives me mental anxiety. 4 years ago I gave up our home in Wales and gave away 90 percent of our belongings there. I calculated that to bring the furniture I wanted to keep from the UK to Cyprus would cost more than to replace . As it turned out because I shipped a car it wouldn't have been much more to have a shipping container. I miss my bed and bedroom furniture and my lovely English china and glasses but not much else and lots of friends and family benefitted from my things. I thought the charity shop would have benefited but in the 3 weeks it took me to organise the move friends kept asking me what I was doing with my things so everything went . We only had a few trips to the recycling centre with trash.
I still haven't bought a new mattress for my bed yet !. Still using a gifted one here in Cyprus. On the odd occasions when I miss some of my old possessions, I imagine them being used by my family and friends.

As a fellow pack rat/hoarder, I too have found the best strategy is not buying the things in the first place. Once I have them, I have so much trouble letting them go so it's best to not have them in the first place.
Mugs and stationery are my weaknesses too, and blankets! The amount of blankets I have acquired of the years that I never use but have grown attached to in one way or another... letting go of them was simultaneously tough and like a weight lifted.
You're doing a great job! Fingers crossed you find out soon how long you have until the move! From experience, not knowing how long you have to pack for adds an unnecessary stress so hopefully you don't have to wait much longer 🤞🏻

That is a rather unusual stance. Lol. I have no desire to move, but I have kind of been looking at my house in a bit of modular form. Like, if we had to move quick, I know I would immediately rent storage if I didn't know where I was going and start moving totes, and things like trunks with stuff that are partly filled. So would fill those and transport, then start going through spaces in waves pulling out things we don't use daily, and so forth, and I think we could actually get moved in definitely in one month, but I would like to get things situated so that we could easily pack and move in a week.

Right now We're living in my aunt house because she has a wheelchair ramp for my husband. But she left the house to me. All my cousins told me to live in it because it was left to me. Our house is next door & we have 2 builds to go through. But my husband told me if we haven't seen it in 7 yrs just give it away.

That's so kind of your aunt to leave the house to you! It must be convenient having a wheelchair ramp for your husband. It's wonderful that your family are supportive of your living there too - what a great family you have. I hope you can find the courage to declutter and give away what you don't need - I know it's not easy. x

My husband wa killed in a workplace accident and I had washed and kept the clothes he died in 7 years later I burned it, I was getting married again so I used it to get my late husband’s accident out of my mind. • @MySemiSortedLife

The only news is that the new landlord needs to find a rental in the city near enough to commute to - so if he can't find somewhere - then he will commute until he does - so we have no move in date. The current landlord is completely non communicative and we have no idea what their plans are....
