The Spoil Canal in Hopedale is a notorious body of water that commands a healthy respect from Louisiana's inshore anglers
Its shallow waters and blind corners are a recipe for disaster, causing boating accidents over the years and even claiming a few lives of those just looking to go fishing.
For these reasons the Spoil Canal has been avoided like a plague, with anglers opting for the deeper and wider Mississippi River Gulf Outlet canal, or MRGO.
But, the MRGO was closed in 2009, sending increased boat traffic to the winds and turns of the Spoil Canal.
This video shows you how to safely navigate this body of water, so you can avoid becoming grounded, colliding into another boat, or worse.
And, as always, remember to wear your kill switch and PFD!

Probably never run the canal but you’ve made a great video. Very informative and great wind and noise suppression on your equipment! Thanks!!

Thanks Devin. Great video. I’ve been wondering about the bayou after the L turn before you get to the MRGO. So is it safe to take that right turn and follow that bayou out to get on the SW side of the MRGO rocks? IMO that would be a good alternative route back in if there was a strong NE wind. But I wasn’t sure if it was deep enough to get down it or if there was any hazards.

I have a boat with two foot draft and would very much appreciate a chart clearly outlining the route to the SOUTH side of the Hopedale rock dam.
