      This saying is so illustrative!
      I think we need to keep front of mind that how we benefit the company defines our path forward. The hard workers need to stay hard working. When we have strategic high impact, they need to elevate us. There's no right or wrong path, but if you're frustrated on one you need to look at where actions are tracking.

      I was in this situation watching the office kiss@ss hanging out in my manager's office literally everyday, for hours sometimes, the guy really really wanted to be a manager. I thought about it and came up with "get results , not opinions", i.e. if you are an employee they cannot live without you don't need to play office games, you can easily move to the next role.

    It's because it's the wrong boss. The employees get away with what the Boss allows. The company is a reflection of the management. Things continue because people don't interfere. What is tolerated is expressed.

    Re: The first one. I once worked at a place where the top guy got into cycling during the Tour de France / Lance Armstrong craze. Almost overnight, all of the middle managers showed up with huge-dollar road bikes strapped to the top of their cars and could be seen wearing their spandex clown outfits. When the top guy moved on (got fired, actually), all of the bikes and spandex disappeared and the underlings went back to their true interests.

      OMG just laughed so hard out loud at this. It's so fake, and this is what i feel like alienates so many people from wanting to be come leaders - because they think they'll need to do stupid shit like wear spandex if the big boss does. Work is a social construct, and this type of construct is a joke. BUT we can rebuild it (and lots of companies aren't like this I promise!)

      I just been dealing and putting with they ,bipolar personality one min he would be cool with me then the next min its back to Hell . everyone know how he treats his staff worker
      until you start standing up for yourself they would all turn so fast. I'm mostly a quite person & a easy target to be pick on I'll don't like conflict sometimes our argument is pointless & childish. that a life a working at Hotel for you . trust me LOL I do love my job .

    How do you not outshine someone who does nothing?I've been in this situation 3 or 4 times. If I didn't do my job then my job was over & if I out worked the slackers they worked to get me fired.

      Been there myself too…I learned to just do the minimum and only shine when asked/told by management. Instead of out working the slackers. After I did my daily requirement then I would go help the slackers. I wouldn’t do the entire job for them but just give them a “bathroom break”. In return they were the eyes to the back of my head and also my ears.

      Exactly... i've even made detailed records of a slacker avoiding work for weeks at a time. Literally doing nothing and getting paid more than me. I don't think the boss even gave them a single disciplinary. They don't even care. It's like they knew them before they started working there so they want to protect them. My boss even said "i love you but please don't tell HR." Work life just isn't fair.

    The first part of being relatable goes a very long way. It’s difficult for women working in male dominated environments, or people from a different culture. Thos barriers can be difficult to break through.

I realize that things I thought must be rare exceptions (big egos, rewarding sycophants who do no work, general lack of meritocracy) are actually the norm.     Depending on the field you work, a lot of supervisors barely graduated high school. They lack a work ethic, morals and values. They get the job because they know someone, not because they are competent. They tend to protect the employees that are equally mediocre.

    What you and my boss have in common is that you both can't seem to grasp that it's the boss's job to solve departmental problems. What you're asking is for your employee(s) to do both their jobs and yours for you. And like her, you want all the credit.

    AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! YEASSS I worked with a slacker Chad that the president of the company LOVED. Who am I kidding, even the owners of the company loved him so the managing director. I think they liked him cus he was similar, relatable to them and he had a generally decent attitude even though he was not that great. But I will say this is why having more people that are minorities in leadership positions matters. When we relate to people like us it makes it hard for those that are not culturally like us to be given a chance because there is a barrier.

In fact is the opposite, hard work make people dislike you, specially in public service. They will always prefer the one who sits in front of them to gossip and talk for hours about other non-work things,

    I don't want to coddle incompetence and put me in the position to sink with bad management. What I do well is listen and empathize and try to be available for the senior person that matters. I personally am not mad at Chads. They have learned to work an angle.I just want to go in, solve problems, and get paid. During that time I am open and friendly.

    Great video! I appreciate these truths. My concern with the first two is that you may end up looking disingenuous if you try to be just like your boss, when you aren't, and you try to get in his good side when you are so different from him or her, you may end up being accused of brown-nosing. The other two are great solutions in my opinion because you are there to solve problems, and your boss and co-workers ideally should feel relieved that you are working, rather than "oh no!..."

    If the elevator feels awkward, you might be insecure. Time to check yourself.
    You should focus on yourself, not on your boss. Your boss is transitory, you are not.
    48 Laws of power is a nice book. If you want to expose your boss, make sure it can't be tracked to you.
    You should also not give them constructive feedback because of their egos. From the get go, they consider themselves superior to you.
    Do not solve problems for your boss. He is irrelevant to you. Solve problems to gain more insights and abilities and become competent.
    then, if your boss is an asshole, you will have more and better opportunities to change your job, inside or outside of the company.

    I really hate butt lickers but they exist. From experience and the video, I concluded that fair play doesn’t exist so much in performance review estimation. Nowadays we are so far away from democracy and normal functioning of things. If they promote only people that they personally like, isn’t it so much subjective only? This seems irrelevant and so far away from professional approach and health business organization functioning. If someone tells what is not functioning well, he tells maybe in the manner to make it better, to focus them on things that matter because we have time as important resource. Vanity is the worst enemy of all huge corporations (and organizations in general) that kills value. I really like your advices and I am doing the same thing in my case because I saw that is only the way if I want to survive - to be a politician and to do my own thing with pride and honor. I have confidence to say when some things are not so good but it’s only from the best intention. What I can share with all friends here is - enthusiasm. That is something that people like and I believe it is the essence people like, in good and bad outcomes (we can’t escape from bad outcomes while we are all learning from mistakes ).       Ana, I love what you added here about enthusiasm. I think it's infectious and something that truly makes you stand out.
      And I hear you on the grievance of the social constructs we're living in. I'm also of the disruptive nature that I want to fight the current. But I think when we flow with it a bit, and when we advance we find ourselves with the power to begin making changes. We know no one here is falling into the Chad Club trap (even if they are a Chad because now they have awareness). The same psychological biases that can make us stuck can skyrocket us. Ultimately... I'm all about playing the game to change the game. Glad you're here with me!

      @@JenniferBrick I adore the last sentence “…I am about to play the game to change the game.” Totally got it right! I am a leader and someone who likes changes, God gave me strong character that I respect other honest actions and honest view on things. When someone contributes to the company, he contributes with heart and compassion, with the vision that goes beyond all frontiers and creates one horizon of solutions and positive impacts on the community. The thing is, we live in the selfish world, where ego of managers is going crazy near healthy confident people. Leader is someone who makes other leaders! One thing is very important from the segment of our defense - we as professionals, contributors and team members should play smartly and elegantly in contact with “emotional and not so confident” people structures. And with all advices you said, it is a great win-win situation where we become from target,as the reflection of their insecurities, to shining master of change!!!!!

    This is such an eye opener. I wish I had seen this video before I started this job. I have the definition of a toxic boss. She lied about me getting an increase said I wasn't when I actually was blames me and my co-workers for stuff we didn't do, she criticizes us for every little thing. Especially the things we didn't know as non of us were properly trained. And she had only been in that specific department for 2 months before I was. I guess I have the expectation that she'd be more understanding towards since all of us pretty much don't know what we're doing and we're just doing our best. We're supposed to be a team but. Eh. Anyways, ever since she's been like that with us and with me, I decided to get the right information from another shift who knows what they're doing to avoid constantly getting shamed from this woman. Well she doesn't like that and it's been a tense workplace since I started comparing what I've been told. After watching this, I notice that on my end that I have been unconsciously and unintentionally doing all of this unlikable stuff. I feel bad but also understand why I did all this. Now that I know better, I will do better.

    Kathy Loves Physics and History points out that one reason that Albert Einstein had to settle for a patent clerk job is that he could irritate people by, you guessed it, outshining them! He found the patent job both interesting and easy, and usually got 8 hours worth of work done in two hours. Allowing him to spend the rest of the day thinking about how the Universe is put together. Taking such a slacker attitude toward the patent work itself, kept him from outshining his boss, at least until the papers he wrote about the Photoelectric Effect and Special Relativity started getting traction.
    I've also found that a young engineer can blow an interview by assuming that they are looking for a guy who has the potential to be the Nikola Tesla of fluid mechanics! That's how I blew an interview for a civilian job with the Navy in Bremerton! Most interviewers for engineering jobs do not want to hire Nikola Tesla, Tom Edison, or Archimedes.
    I got hired at Boeing when the interviewer asked me about computer technology as it then existed. I gave good enough answers, but because I majored in mechanical engineering and not in computer science, I could not irritate him with a high level answer. Got the job.
    Looking back on this, I believe that the early Boeing Company was a great place for smart engineers to work. My dad and his generation thrived at Boeing and they were great engineers. Supervisors at that time knew the company needed Tesla and Archimedes quality engineers and actually looked for them in their interviews. By the time I came around, supervisors were looking for people who could be happy doing chicken droppings work and did not like being outshined by Wright Brothers quality designers and problem solvers, or John DeLorean quality visionaries.
    If you want to know why Boeing has had problems with its plastic 787 planes and with the 737 Max, I just told you.
    Elon Musk might be a good guy for an Edison quality engineer, but how long will his companies last before they settle into the middle age that seems to afflict companies that invariably get taken over by cost cutting bean counters? With office floor supervisors that hate being outshined?

    Yes, but what do you do when your boss' incompetence put in jeopardy your job or your career brand? Let's say you have to write a report; you know the way it should be done and your boss insists you do it their crappy way; you can't present it bypassing your boss' opinion, but if you present it badly done, you'll have to assume the responsiblity. Now let's say that happens over and over again... there's no way you can perform well if you don't correct them constantly... which leads to be considered the annoying know-it-all.     I’ve seen this happen when working in a home broadband and mobile phone company while living in New Zealand, every time there was a new position such as team leader, manager or coaching role etc it would always go to the most laziest less productive individuals only due to them being buddy buddies with other managers. I even address it in my exit interview saying the reason why all the good employees are getting up and leaving to the competition was due to them not being acknowledged and that their skills would be better appreciated elsewhere.

    As an employee it certainly is good to bring solutions to the table to your boss and make everyone’s life easy. But what do you do when your boss has the habit of nitpicking your every solution simply because they are the boss and have a desperate need to have the final say? This regardless of how useful the solution is, they just need to exercise their power. This is demoralizing and honestly difficult to find a way round for. Any ideas for it? :D

      Exactly. Sometimes it might not be an employee's place to come up with the solution. The boss might rather you notify of the problem and let them handle the solutions behind the scenes. That's why they're the boss... they're supposed to have more responsibility than a regular employee. Managers are supposed to manage.

    the most useful video that i saw about this topic :) Actually i read the book "48 Laws of Power" 12 years ago for the first time, i think also that the 1st Chapter from the book is from critical importance to be kept in mind- the example there with the Financial minister of the French King- he was sent to jail.....

    I have a Catherine, she's late and takes loads of personal calls on office days, and is rude and patronising to me. And since we work from a shared inbox I know that she does less than an hours work a day on average, and it's bad quality. She also doesn't have the required skills or knowledge. We do the exact same job so this just means that I end up doing two people's jobs for no extra money. And yet she seems to have the opposite reputation amongst the team, it's infuriating.

    The Boss’ Favorites get to hang out and socialize all day, while people like me work. I need some input from them and get nothing. If I tell my Boss, he’ll just tell them I’m complaining about them and get mad and nitpick me for speaking the truth. Other than quit, what can I do?

    Bosses love to sit on their pedestal. My boss brought me up in a meeting and the thing that impressed him most about me was the fact that I didn't care that he was my boss's boss and continue to work without giving him special attention while we were walking a job together....like really?

    I'm getting tired of employment videos that suggest if you aren't kissing ass then your performance doesn't matter. That is not my experience right now. This video can be summed up in one sentence... KISS MORE ASS IF YOU WANT TO GET AHEAD. However, that's wrong in my situation.

I am a BDR in tech sales... can you explain me why my boss ask me to partecipate to interviews? I was think maybe she want to see how i give feedback on other people's?     I fail at all of these things. If I have a solution to a problem why would I waste time explaining the problem to an incompetent person so that they can feel good about contributing? With labor being short these days, it's hard not to look at the guy walking around doing jack, and thinking you wished they were a spare hand.

      Same... like... if we find commonalities with the boss... make the boss feel good... bring the boss solutions. What exactly does the boss do? A manager who doesn't manage but just submits paperwork and collects money. Employees make them look good and they keep getting raises, bonuses, and promotions. It just doesn't seem right to follow this guide. But it makes sense. She is a boss. She's writing a guide for what she wants out of employees. This guide is meant to benefit bosses. It's from a boss's perspective for the benefit of bosses.

    Employed at a long term care facility. Head nurse the DON of assistant living hired 4 of her lazy under qualified friends. 2 have abused residents with witnesses nothing was reported zero was down. Med tec goes around telling people she is a RN!! She is a med tec with 3 days of on line video training. People quit because of this situation. One will be taking the CNA test for the third time. Can't pass the test because he is a moron. I just don't get why someone would put their nursing license in Jeopardy to hire a bunch of idiots with the state breathing down her neck. Place gets fined with every inspection. Urine soaked rooms are starting to really stink because of her lazy minions. Residents go weeks with out showers her fav's never get reprimanded. Most toxic work environment I have ever experienced. Can't wait to found another job soon.

    Unions protect, or actually reward, the lazy bad workers by giving the work they don’t get done to the good workers. I work with an extremely lazy worker Dan who does actually less than the bare minimum. The management would rather ignore the issue than deal with this employee

      Same here being mobbed, gaslighting, harassed at the hospital for 12 years. Top workers for 38 years have never been suspended. Jealousy and misery. Union, manager, HR and the police are all totally useless. Bullies are lazy bums and stupid managers are scared of the bullies. They say about me I'm crazy, i dink, i'm a stalker all bs defamation of character. They removed disciplinary measures. They should arrest the bullies and fire the manager. Action speaks louder than nasty words. It destroys my reputation. I will never quit to make these bums ever win and if I transfer to another hospital and mobbing starts again I don't know all the managers ect like in every department like now.     Why is it that every video like this is talking about an office setting? What about healthcare? I work in healthcare and it’s a different level of frustrating having to pick up the lazy coworkers slack. It’s physical, exhausting, backbreaking work. Not everyone works in accounting.

      I wanted to love it. I was so excited. I thought the whole trilogy was so perfect... so maybe my expectations were too high because of that and the trailer looked so good. Bought opening night tickets to see it and everything... And I was really disappointed 😢

      Navigating an office environment is basically dealing with an endless stream of lazy, useless, and incompetent men and an equally endless stream of angry, self-important, overbearing women. In the video, the fuck-offs have male names, which is generally accurate.
      It's not unlike romantic relationships, honestly. How many articles do you see where a husband is whining that his wife doesn't don't do her share of the chores, or does things in an unacceptably slipshod, half-assed way? (Few if any, because if there's a lazy, incompetent asshole in a house, it's almost always the man.) Equally, how many articles do you see where a wife is complaining that her meddlesome husband acts like without his constant overbearing interference, the entire household would immediately fall apart? (Few if any, because if there's a resentful, self-important asshole in the house, it's almost always the woman.)

If your situation is this frustrated you need to take it out on minority groups and internet strangers (who help, for free), I highly suggest plotting your exit while you find more positive and productive coping mechanisms (I have more free videos on both those things)

    This is whats wrong with our generation.
    Everyone is so damn sensitive and afraid to actually tell there boss they are a moron and they will stop working hard and work at the level the favored one works at. Its hilarious to watch the shift change.
    Its unfortunate that we have to lower our standards and work ethic to match some bastards management of there employees.
