Been a machinist for 10 years, seeing that thing finished actually got me a bit teary eyed. That has got to be the most beautifully machined part I've ever seen. And I watch a looooooot of cnc vids after work lol

I've worked as a design engineer for the past 40 years even before this type of machining was a thing. Because I was part of a team that developed experimental stuff way beyond the comfort zone of most businesses, practically at the edge of the possible, I often got the shop manager complaining that my ideas were either not possible, too difficult or would take too long to machine. It often meant revising my drawings to accommodate the shortcomings of our machines and I was never happy about it.
And then CAD and CNC machining came into my life and I felt I'd entered heaven. I still get complaints, but we have a couple of "artists" in the machine shop who love to crack such problems. I just have to tell them nobody can do the job because... and that's enough for them to sit down and get to work.
Whatever those guys get paid it's not enough. Tell management to get them a raise and bonus.
Learning mechinist here. Can you tell me why this piece is so difficult like he said and that it couldn’t be done ? It’s very beautiful but I just don’t understand why it’s difficult or impossible.
@@kryoz8121 I'm not a machinist so I can't say, I'm one of the guys who machinists curse for thinking the workpieces up that give them nightmares.
@@kryoz8121 It's not that it couldnt be done. It's more of the fact that is risker if you f up the gcode and not as cost effective.
Basically mfs are too dumb and lazy to bother.
@@kryoz8121 the machine, which deliver that nice curve surface is not dising for such a task. Usaly it used only for nice flat kind polish looks serface.
I love demo pieces like this. Basically art or novelties that takes so much machine time that it would never be made except to show off a company's capabilities.

That was 4140?! My god man... I'm an engineer, I know engineering and machinists don't always get along the best but this is an incredible piece. Machinists don't get nearly enough credit for their work. Great job

I'm a French machinist on external cylindrical grinding Studer CNC for plastic injection molding and I found the most difficult is to explain my work to people... Nevertheless, it's the work of my life , it's incredible what you can make and sometimes I feel myself as an artist . Beautiful work , hands down !

Absolutely incredible. I’ve been machining for 6 years now, and found myself in a shop management position facing production issues. I've been involved with cnc machining for 50 years and this is SPECTACULAR .
Thinking outside the box is perhaps one of the rarest skills to have. I always enjoyed being told something couldn't be done. It was good motivation for finding the solution others did not think of. It gives you a good reputation as well.

Legit bro; the problem is that's how schools teach. Here's the problem and the formula so figure out the answer. They don't teach thinking outside the box and coming up with your own solutions and if you do that they give you a bad grade

@@captaincobb8146 This goes to show that you are not a machinist and have NO IDEA what you are talking about. This IS heat treated 4140 and you CAN machine it and it IS plate. At it's hardest 4140 can only get around 55 Rc which is not very hard. Also, this is 4140 HT which is heat treated but not to it's absolute hardest. It has a range anywhere from 28-34 Rc which is NOT ANNEALED. I don't know what you think you are talking about but there are a ton of materials that get harder than 4140 when heat treated and you can hard machine them just fine so there is no trouble machining 4140 in the hard state either. Before you leave a stupid comment next time, do your research. Maybe then you won't sound like such an idiot

Absolutely outstanding. My best friend was a mold maker for plastic injection molding and a CNC programer/machinist, and he always told me ' if you can design it, he can make it'. Well this video proves him right. Great job, you are a great asset for any job shop.

Life beat him up pretty good,, but he never gave up and did things that many others said was impossible,, or took jobs that no one wanted due to their complexity. I've learned that when someone says something can't be done it only means they can't do it, something is only impossible if you accept it, with thought and good techniques even the most difficult projects can be done...

Not sure what a wider billet of 4140 like this costs, but a 1" x 6" x 12' flat bar runs a bit over $1k nowadays.
Then the machine time, tool wear, and setup cost is easily a few thousand, although setup cost would be amortized over the batch if a small run was done. I'd say less than $10k is possible.
Guessing ~15-17.5k for single unit runs.
Scaled up you could very well see costs nearing ten grand lower, but the volumes you'd need to produce at would be unmovable.

I was a machinist for over 20 years, the term " it can't be done " is used to piss us off and prove someone wrong. Great video! When you picked it up out of the jaws... my jaw dropped. Its like a machinist pc of gold.
The guys at work and I reference this channel when we machine stuff. “We got this big piece of titanium . No coolant so you can see what we’re doing”. It’s a 90s prototrak and we do alumumum machining mostly. Nothing fancy

Pro-tip. Titanium, Inconel and Monel are the few materials that I always use coolant. In titanium, your endmill literally can turn to fire🔥😳😁

I did manual machine work for almost 50 years. Never really cared to run a CNC. I have always admired the work that came off of them, however. This is a phenomenal piece of work. Beautiful job. Never saw a grinder do the wave. Fantastic job, fellas.

we should go back to it, the Tartaryan machines we have that were thousands of years old before we got here, were meant to get civilization going after a disaster, machines can be worked by anyone, these machines are highly paid specialists only, and except for rocket parts do not need to be complicated at all
I laughed in total agreement about 4140. I wanted to cry at how beautiful it finished out at. I am struggling to figure out any protective finish to keep it from rusting that wouldn't obscure just how great this turned out. I think it would be gorgeous in old time slow-rust bluing if you could find someone willing.

The only thing that would make my job better is learning more in the machine shop and actually making chips on parts.

then you should put in your 4 years on the floor after like I did... the schools are ripping you off by sending you into the office right away, you can't replace the experience, learn to be of 'diminished' value, you will discover major problems on the floor no one knows about.

And whoever owns this beautiful flag will soon see it greatly increase in value. It's a work of art. However, as I watched it I was thinking "One tiny mistake and it's all ruined! There is no patching up mistakes!" But you obviously have it all covered, what a great job.

These machines are amazing. I retired from a forge shop. Not a machinist. When I started all dies were sunk either on a Bullard VTL with a tracing head or Cincinnati hydrotel with tracing head. Had a couple big lathes that round dies were turned on as well.
They were still doing repair and some resinks on the VTL when I left. Everything else was done on cnc mills and lathes.
I think this have been the video were I have learned the most!
I use a 6090 cnc router to work mainly on wood and there is so much i can apply from this video. From the stock preparation to some engraving tips and tools to use. Awesome video.

I have never been a fan of cnc, but that is one of the coolest things if seen, I have run a small surface grinder to grind go no go gage's for the last 20 years

What did the manufacturer say about the grinding machine ignoring the compensation setting?
They wasn't sure why it was canceling it out for the way I was doing it. It shouldn't have been but it was. I finally used a contouring cycle which allows you to place the g-code for your contour into a subprogram. once I did that and it actually started reading the G41/G42 I had in the code.
Learned and started doing machine work ( manual ) in 1973 when i went into the U.S. Navy. Got out in 1981 and continued until 1991. 1991, went into CNC machining till i retired in 2021. It has to be your passion, not just a job!

Did the engraving leave any burrs after machining and did you consider grinding after all the engraving?
It did and I re-ran the program to clean it up. We wanted to reveal the engraving at the end is why we did it this way. If I did it again I would certainly engrave it before grinding

Making parts for the most demanding industries is very rewarding but being given the creative freedom to machine a piece of art like this is amazing.
