Just picked that one up a couple of weeks ago.
Man is the Bastard is super underrated and deserves more recognition. They were almost prog violence at times, if that is even a thing lol.
PROGVIOLENCE
And they put out that mini cd split with Locust that was shaped like a square. Pure chaos energy
That's a great way to describe the band and one of its many influences.
*JAZZ*
They literally coined the term.
Started playing in a powerviolence band 2 years ago and it quickly became one of my favourite genres. Absolutely love Apartment 213, Manhunt, Sex Prisoner and Dystopia
Apartment 213 fuck’n rules
what band you in? always checkin shit out. been kinda off powerviolence lately but i always come back to it.
@@xdumpstrspunionx902 my band's 'skirmisher' were from Australia and we put out our demo a little while ago plus we've got some splits coming out this year, here's a video of us playing from a few months ago czcams.com/video/tMqzdHvmLIg/video.html
Dystopia fucks bro.. Such good music.
Dystopia fucking rules. Same with Sex Prisoner. I listen to "Tannhauser Gate" a lot at the gym
POWERVIOLENCE FOREVER
IN GRIND WE TRUST, IN CRUST WE RUST
In crust is pizza!
infest - no mans slave is probably my favorite album in the entire genre. just so insanely pummeling and so incredibly catchy
getting into powerviolence was pretty important to me. i'd always been into punk, hardcore, and metal. but after i got into powerviolence i got into grind, then i got into goregrind and mince, and then gorenoise and harsh noise and hnw. So getting into the fast super abrasive pv bands like Weekends Nachos, Infest, Family Vacation, Big Idiot, Punch, Apartment 213, Chainsaw Squid, Twitch, Sex Prisoner, Charles Bronson, and Water Torture really helped expand my tastes in extreme music. But it was Ceremony's early material that got me into powerviolence in the first place.
what about pornogrind? (jk) what is hnw?
@@xenostim hnw or harsh noise well is a well of unchanging noise and vomir is the most well known artist in that genre
@@holstonmatt whaaaat. I just checked out Vomir. Is every song really a constant unchanging sound for the whole track?! I love that it exists, but I can't really listen to it and enjoy it lol. I love noise though, particularly powernoise/power electronics. Merzbow, Terrorfakt, Panzer Division for example. I've played some noise sets with my friend in Richmond too, but damn that hnw is on some whole nother level lol
@@xenostim yeah it is and i love the artists you list in your comment
@@xenostimalso here what vomir said when explaining what the genre was all about "no ideas, no changes, no development, no entertainment, and no remorse" also harsh noise wall had been made before but vomir was really the one to get people talking about it
I like Powerviolence a lot. I got into it way back when Man Is the Bastard and Capitalist Casualties came out. Zulu is killing it and they might be even more popular than Nails at some point. Their new album is getting a lot of attention.
Zulu has a lot of the elements of of pv but it just doesn't add up. I think like another comment said powerviolence is almost as much of a time period as a genre. Same with brat. I see the influence but I wouldn't call it pv.
I have a hard time seeing Nails as a powerviolence band. Sound and delivery is alot different than bands like Spazz, Charles Bronson, Venkman, Punch etc. Also what comes to extremity, I think your description of pw is how I'd describe grindcore :D Anyway, thanks for the cool videos! I just binged them all.
A lot different but whatever. Kids these days. Lol.
Locohappy I definitely agree Nails is not a power violence band. They are much more death metal influenced
That's because they're not PV, I don't know why people pushed that on a band that sounds like Rotten Sound.
@@kingbeheaded6341 and I think they said they're just hardcore.
I'd say they're powerviolence leaning hardcore at the very least. It just gets on my nerves how many bands are deemed not powerviolence by PV elitists (and on the other end deemed false grind by grind elitists). Like, playing devils advocate here, but why would I waste my time with bands like Brain Tourniquet if I could just go back and listen to Crossed Out over and over? I mean obviously I'm going to listen to Brain Tourniquet and other newer bands still because they're sick, but if PV isn't like allowed to evolve and take on new sounds then the genre is going to (and frankly, at points, has) suffocate itself. Genres are fake anyway lol.
Good stuff. I was fortunate to have seen Capitalist Casualties, Hellnation, Drop Dead, Assuck and a few others in the early 90's.
Got to see Assuck and Spazz. Got to play with Dystopia and Noothgrush. Good times.
Assuck is all time top 10. So tight so heavy and no bass player nothing short of amazing.
Saw capitalist casualties and dropdead around 10 years ago. So sick
@@shaneface1060 saw capitalist causalities at koos cafe in the early 2000s in santa ana a super small venue the size of a living room cops came and broke up the show fun times. Thier first lp and split with M.I.T.B are bonafide classics.
i saw all those bands too when they cruised through cali. have you heard Copout? not a lot of folks know them but they were one of the best live shows i ever saw
Dude power-violence is one of the best punk genres. Once of my first bands in the genre was nails. Once again nice video.
Not powerviolence at all. Maybe read a book sometime.
@@skinnee Nails cram their brief but constantly shifting tracks with a chaotic, complex blend of hardcore punk, D-beat, grindcore, powerviolence, and death metal." Quote taken directly from pitchfork
@@ZacharyTheJackal Idk if quoting Pitchfork on powerviolence is the best tactic. Nails is cool tho.
@@S019978 Yeah they are. Idk either I'm sure I could find more but I have other things to do lol
@@ZacharyTheJackal they're not a powerviolence band fucking period, full stop. they're okay at what they do, my friend was even in that band for a bit, but what they do isn't PV. and yeah bro you can spare me the fucing pitchfork description im literally over 40.
Top 3 for me
1. Iron Lung - Sexless//No Sex
2. Spazz - La Revancha
3. Sea Of Shit - 2013 10"
love iron lung, seattle powerviolence! fucking great picks
Solid choices
Lack of interest, hatred surge, spazz for me
Code-13
Damage Deposit
Crossed Out
Iron Lung, Crossed Out, and Regional Justice Center
Discovering Charles Bronson was a gamechanger for me. I came from being into metal, and the first time I heard "Rich Crusties Shall Pay" it blew my mind that punk could sound like that. It's been a long time since then, but I was heavily immersed in the world of PV for a good while because of that band.
My all-time favorite band is GASP, who started as a powerviolence band but morphed into a combination of their original sound and psychedelia. The album "Drome Triler of Puzzle Zoo People showcases their mote morphed sound. They also got back together recently, after a hiatus that lasted... 20 years, maybe? I'm not a punk historian, so that might not be correct. Anyway, Drome Triler is on CZcams, so give it a listen! It's amazing!
Best band ever
Any video that mentions Dropdead is cool in my book.
I love powerviolence! It's pre-production model grindcore.
Edit: Also, Lack Of Interest is one of my faves; they had two albums and a split with Spazz.
Lack of infest. Agreed one of the best plus there great live.
Power violence grindcore emotional hardcore are my loves 🥰🥰🥰🥰
I’m an older dude from this scene you did a really good job with this. I played with a few of these bands.
I'm really loving these videos and your Spotify playlists, keep up the great work!
Siege, Crossed Out, Man is the Bastard, Capitalist Casualties, ACxDC, Dropdead, Spazz, Weekend Nachos, Infest, Nails, Iron Lung, Despise You, No Comment, Hellnation, Fuck on the Beach, (early) Magrudergrind, Godstomper, Hatred Surge, The Endless Blockade, Combatwoundedveteran, Sex Prisoner, Yacopse…
So much great stuff!
It is all about INFEST. Period.
this.
fuck yes it starts & ends with Infest.
Dude. Infest is insane. The stars aligned and 25 years after first hearing the “Slave” 7’ inch. I got to see them in Brooklyn with The Fight, and Sick Shit. Woah. Much much stage-diving. Much much fun…
Great video. I can’t wait to tuck into the bands I haven’t heard of.
Shout outs to Snagg and BadxMouth for really great contemporary PV. Snagg pushes right up against grindcore. BadxMouth sometimes get the ‘stonerviolence’ label.
I’m also loving the coming together of powerviolence and mincecore… shout out to GoeyChivo, Varkolak, Warthog and Pure for mangling you the mince and PV!
MITB, Crossed Out, Infest, Despise You, Hatred Surge, No Comment, Lack of Interest, Scholastic Deth, Gets Worse, In/Humanity are my fav
Gets worse is soooooo fucking good
do you remember Copout? great live show
Dude, I like your postive approach.
Well my grandma said back in her day they didn't have fancy names like powerviolence they were just crust punks who liked to slam. But she also said they didn't have fancy forms of contraception like pulling out either.
WOW. I'm impressed Jack. Love the energy!!!
I don’t listen to powerviolence often or know too many bands in the genre, but whenever I’m in a grind or crust mood a bit of it always gets thrown in there and I thoroughly enjoy it when U hear it. Definitely gonna check out a couple bands mentioned here, this is for sure a genre I was hoping to look into more.
Glad to see you uploading more videos by the way, this was really interesting! Thanks for appeasing the punk side of my music nerd brain.
thank you for including a playlist!
been checking out your channel the last few days, very interesting vids! would be cool to see one of these about early 77 style punk and it’s rise in popularity with newer bands in the last few years.
You’ve earned a subscriber! I always think you’re gonna forget certain keys bands, but you always hit them and give your own opinions as well. Fuck yeah dude!
Fastcore!!! 💀💀 my favs Yacöpsæ, Magrudergrind, CrossedOut, Sordo, InDisgust, Chulo (colombia)... an extreme music fan.
Yacopsae are awesome.
I’ve been watching lots of your videos lately but this is my favorite. Grind and pv are my favorite genres and I love making bmx videos with them because they go hand and hand. Pretty much every genre of punk goes well with bmx
Magrudergrind def needs a mention. Excellent video. I remember seeing Coke Bust in DC years ago, but Magrudergrind was def my fav powerviolence band to see live. so much energy, just made you want to circle pit!
I need to start taking notes as I’m watching these vids! So many sick bands get mentioned, can’t remember them all
It’s cool to hear a lot of powerviolence crust punk grindcore etc from different countries it seems to have different tempos and vocal style changes
Love the mind eraser shout out. feels like such an underrated band when i bring em up
Excellent research and presentation
Magrudergrind is one of my favorite PV bands that wasn't mentioned in this video. They were even featured on an episode of Veep on HBO.
I'd say they're more a grind band but I love them forever so I don't care
@@vb_blokeboi7251 they kind of tow the line between gindcore and powerviolence. In my opinion at least. I mean, they sound more like Powerviolence than Nails.
@@keithhatlak4325 yeah nails aren't PV blackened hardcore maybe idk I like em but they're pretty entry level
the host does say he's an extremely under qualified "punk rock historian" what did you expect?
I really don't understand the difference between grindcore and powerviolence. Could you explain it to me?
I've been into metal since I was about 13, but only in the last few years started getting into the most extreme of the extreme. Fucking stoked to have found this channel and look forward to exploring the previous vids.
Love seeing capitalist casualties mentioned
I love me some INFEST, power violence is definitely one of my favorites. Good vid!
Regional Justice Center, Wound Man, Bandit, Ground, No/Más, Chest Pain are some of my modern favs
I got kicked in the face at a Wound Man show last week and never felt so alive
With that said check out the singers others PV projects..Internal, Wolf Whistle, Brother (his wife sings) and Breathing Fire to name a few
@@CorsiLovesKicks Definitely dig Wolf Whistle, will check out the others! Nothing like a rowdy show to make ya feel alive!
Stimulant is my current favorite very extreme band. They owe a lot of their sound to PV, but they bring enough of their own to the table that I'd rather just call their sound extreme music than attach a genre.
I found you by searching info about niche hardcore/metal music. I really like this videos - nice historical gateway without being encyclopedic with personality and no lame jokes. Reminds of Punk Rock MBA old videos "What Killed Genre" which imo were much better than what he's doing now.
Also you don't give me middle-aged libertarian guy vibe which is great. keep going boi. I'm going to beingewatch your stuff now.
Infest and Dystopia are the GOAT
Powerviolence is still my top favorite genres of music. It's also introduced me to other genres that's not related to hardcore. Even movies because most songs used skits before the song plays. Powerviolence is thrilling, noisy and yet creative.
I just came across this video looking for some of my favorite powerviolence bands by accident and I gotta say I'm impressed with this. As a punk/hardcore/crust/etc music nerd you covered it pretty well. I was actually at that Infest show, I think in 2016?, that you used the footage of!
I used to be in a powerviolence-y band for a few years and now play in an 80s style hardcore punk with slight surfy influence band and a more modern stompy hardcore punk band in jersey rn. I will def check out your music and your other vids!
Drop Dead was always my fave of the genre, though I didn't know it was considered crust punk, since they also site Siege as influence. Though their lyrical themes do follow the crust punk formula very well.
I really couldn't give a shit about bands that stay within the realm of one genre. Give me abit of Grind, abit of Crust, abit of Powerviolence and abit of Hardcore. Slap it all together.
You’d love Gulch.
@@ProdYaMom i second this gultch rules
Spazz, INFEST, Lack of interest, crossed out, & Charles Bronson. My playlist from high school
When Punk went pop in the mid 90s. Power violence and Grindcore was my go to. Got to play with a lot of cool bands then.
7:07 Saint Vitus t-shirt! Thumbs up for that guy!
Can't wait for the emoviolence/skramz video
Deep Wound, yo!
Cool video. Metal head here. I listen to a fair amount of grindcore, but I was never clear on what the difference is between grindcore and powerviolence.
Also, it's amazing how many subgenres there are that are all distinctly different, but all mix metal and hardcore/punk in some way: crossover thrash, grindcore, metalcore, death core, etc.
Great video! Grew up with Capitalistic Casulities in Sonoma County. Went to a few of the Slap A ham Fesitival de Grinds at Gillman, Ended up in LA and it's cool seeing footage of Infest, Weekend Nachos & ACxDC shows I attended! You're dong a great job with the channel coming from and Bay Area Thrash boomer!
Just jumping into power violence. Started with Nails but quickly moved onto ACxDC, amazing band.
Anti christ demon & clothing accesories
Wound Man and Weekend Nachos fucking rip if you're still looking into it.
Been a fan of Spazz since high school in the 90s early 2000s
Love powerviolence
SPAZZ FOREVER
Subversion is better
REST IN POWER MIKE FROM CAPITALIST!!
Saw Born Against,Man is the Bastard and Crossed Out at the Che Cafe...SDSU campus, prob one of the best shows of all time
i think i was at that show
my favorite pv band has got to be family vacation from battle ground, washington. saw them live and they are even wilder at being such vicious beasts. i own their shirt and everything so definitely check em out
Love powerviolence. Great video, you did a good job trying to navigate the labyrinthine genre crossovers with a lot of these bands. Recommend checking out Bandit.
it could already be in the works but a crass course: hardcore/post hardcore would be sick
I pretty much love all thrashcore and powerviolence more of the 90's stuff though
first video of yours I am seeing, earned my sub immediately.
def checking outt your playlistt. Drummer Jorge from ACxDC, I think Despise You as well, superrrrr chill dudeee
A lot of good stuff here. It's cool that people still go back to see where punk/hardcore pioneers came from, and drop some names that surely turn people on to those bands. Very cool. Personally I am not one to get really specific about genres or labels- many bands cross several such categories and I think a lot of punk bands arrive at their sound simply because they play to their strengths, as opposed to deliberately pursuing formulas. Great live clips in here. Had a punk band just after high school named Slammy Davis Jr.
;)
I love deep wound
My top pv records, in no particular order:
Suffer - Lone
Shackles - Forced to Regress
Infest - No Man's Slave
Sex Prisoner - Tannhauser Gate
and Magrudergrind, Coffin Birth (Aus), Chest Pain, Despise You, Weekend Nachos, Extortion, Dystopia and early Ceremony all deserve nods from me. Also been loving a lot of releases from 11pm records lately.
My fav genre in hardcore so much is crossed over but i think it
Covers all the different flavors of hardcore and extreme music that i love
7:21 that’s exactly the appeal of PV. It’s the explosiveness and the speed that makes listening to it great. People who look into extreme music genres and measure how good (read melodic) it sounds compared to traditional metal or punk sounds is evaluating the wrong thing.
I really enjoy The Endless Blockade
Power Violence is my favorite subgenre of punk.
Keep all the vids coming! Very nostalgic for me. How about one on raised fist? Were one of my favourites growing up.
Capitalist Casualties forever!!!
The genre "emo violence" sounds very non threatening for having the word violence in its name.
😂😂😂
Never heard that term either. I just call it Emotional hardcore.
It makes me think of the meme "dude chill she said rawr XD to me first bro." 🤣
Emoviolence gets threatening af, doesn’t tend to take itself super seriously but the more dissonant wacky side of it like reversal of man goes insane
maybe emo-violence is a water balloon fight.
Fire storm was an amazing song. Your shirt got me hype.
Yes!!
Got to see siege a few years ago in LA, one of the best shows I've ever been to. These old guys fucken shredded.
Hirax was a big influence on thrash core. What Happens Next? Was the SHIT and Immortal Fate.
Crossed Out was my intro to PV back in highschool. Ironically, I ordered the record from a MRR ad because at the time I was into sXe/crew h.c. I bought the record just on the name "Crossed Out" thinking of an "X". Needless to say, it melted my face off and never looked at h.c. the same way since. 30 years later and I still proudly own a decent PV collection.
Nice to see Siege shouted out.
Yes they were pioneers of the extreme hardcore sound.
Another band that started out as Power Violence is Harms Way and they’ve gotten huge even though it was post PV era. I love their album Imprisoned.
i thought they were just a modern beatdown band, surprised to see they started out as a pv band
Super awesome bad ass!!!! Fantastic!!!
Ghoul! Love that band.
Punk is not dead because Powerviolence is forever. Nice video.
RIP Power Violence 1992-1997
SPAZZ one of the best bands ever regardless of genre
Best use of Banjo also
Great vids!
We need more videos . We need horror punk and grindcore
Horror Punk will definitely happen! I'm still on the fence about grindcore, but maybe eventually
@@thepunkhistorian6397 I hope so because grindcore deserve attention . It okay if you avoid goregrind
Best new power violence band, extortion from Perth WA Australia. Check them out, good stuff. Got alot of international attention but then just disappeared. Local pub would get destroyed when they played, good times
slund is my personal gold standard for power violence!
Killer channel!!!
SALUTE!
Man trash talk I seen them a few years back with terror that shit was fucking wild man. Great show.
Awesome video!
Sordo the best powerviolence
my take is with a genre like powerviolence or grindcore the way to go is to find just a couple bands you like the sound of over the others and just stick with them, mine are infest, coke bust, capitalist casualties, also, shout out to NO TIME RECORDS
Great video!
Another great video
