Is it easy if I record music on a printed Lenticular animated gif image card? It’s probably hard because they print and laminated them in those special clear plastic sheets to make another image or give animation to life.

I have attempted CD cutting, with limited success but getting a steady spiral without a mechanism led to not-so-good results.
Another good thing about the wire nut is it's the least mass object allowing more of the speakers strength to get to the end of the needle instead of waisting power moving a massive volume knob. To get a hole in plastic for the needle just heat it up really hot and it'll melt through with the added benefit of the molten plastic acting as glue

So I decided to replace the metal diaphragm with a speaker so I could electrically amplified the signal going to the needle. I had limited success but I was hoping you could try something like that!
So i was thinking what if you took 2 turntables and locked them down tightly next to each other and made a link between the 2 arms (1 arm with the cutting device on it) maybe with string or something. In theory if you put a normal record on the other turntable and dropped the needle it would pull the cutter on the opposite turntable as the first turntable followed the grooves of the record creating the proper distance between grooves in the recording and probably alot less noise. Just a thought if you want to give it a go with a couple cheapo tables.
Kind of like how a key copier works? I think that's an interesting idea, but you'd have to have a good enough master :/ I think a lot of people want to make copies of music they only have digitally
This reminds me of my early record experiments. I did something almost exactly like this, and had the same problem with the needle not staying in the groove during playback. However I also rigged a synchronous motor from a microwave oven (I think it was) with a string to slowly pull the cutting speaker over the record.

What kind of amplifier did you use for the speaker. How many watts. I'm very interested in record cutting and have tried several different things including this and so far it hasn't worked but if I keep on fiddling with different ideas I can probably get something
Try angling it against the way the record is going. I believe (and I may be wrong) that it will reduce any human error and probably cut into it more. There will probably be a long string so get a bunch of it out of the way.
How did you make the solo plate soft enough to record? Did you just cut the center out of a plate? Also how fast do you need to move the cutter toward the center to not record of the previous groove?
this was a challenge.. I tried this with a speaker and a blade from a scalpel and an old one sided disco record just holding it with my hand. was able to record but not accurately . without a cross lath, at least a screw and bar system with all thread rod and bar from a computer printer would have been better. . but it was just for fun
Andy Carrillo That would work for an Edison Diamond Disc-type recording with the needle moving up and down, but standard records are recorded with the needle moving side-to-side, which is why the needle must be parallel to the speaker.
That needle is flexing too much, I thing if you use a thicker needle like a nail with bigger speakers, then it should work. Question: will it record stereo?
What if you put aluminium foil around a blank cd to record music on it will it work will it still record music on the blank cd and if so will it keep the blank cd protected from the needle ??

this is now late 2020, with todays technology why cant anyone make a suitable quality record lathe. that you dont have to sale your car to get one, with high quality and function. the gakken is a toy and the phonocut is predicted to be around 3000.00 dollars by march 2021. both are two extremes moving in opposite directions. or does anyone have any details and plans for a record lathe that actually worked, with no theories. that we can build on our own as a hobby project.

Why does it need to be a battery powered amp, aren't all speakers driven by an analog source, which has to be dc? Couldn't I use my stereos amplifier? Shouldn't you use one of the two dollar ebay turntable needles to have the proper width groves? Epoxy the needle to an Allen wrench.
Kids, you can use this technique to copy your dad's favorite vinyls. Make 2 of those things with needles and connect the wires from one to the other. Slide one of them on the record you want to copy and the other on blank vinyl. Thank me later.
it will wok if you stop moving the needle. it's making grooves in the plastic that's what all the noise comes from. playing music on the radio would of been a lot better "more signal"

Your Record Must SPIN COUNTER CLOCKWISE to record audio 3. A Cork will not be a good alternative over the orange cap because its got to many hole n the sound will bleed out 4. drill hole in plastic cap First, Then glue it to the speaker
Are you absolutely bonkers? Basically everything you say in this comment is wrong. You don't lathe records backwards, unless you're actually making a record which is supposed to be backwards. The record has to spin in the same direction that you play it at. For goodness' sake...

You should buy the gakken record maker, it records electrically onto 5'' discs and it sounds about as good as a shortwave radio, at least at 45rpm.

It would work better with the needle perpendicular to the speaker and not parallel.

Only the last two things make sense. The first two are indeed flat out wrong, and any record cutting video (not DIY hardware) can prove it.
