I Dressed Like It Was 1977

- I styled 3 outfits inspired by the popular fashions of forty years ago! From the polyester pantsuit and ascot-wearing wonder women, to leather-clad punk music fans and disco dancing queens in jumpsuits and metallic accessories, I had a great time pretending it was 1977 and exploring fashion history through one of the most iconic decades - the 70s. Let me know what you think of my ~lookbook~ and if you want to see more of these!
A huge thanks to Kayley Melissa for rocking out this 70s hair! You can check out her channel here: / @kayleymelissa

Safiya Nygaard I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL
Safiya Nygaard I LOVE YOU GOTH MOOOM
Safiya Nygaard Hello!
I love you XX
Hiii
I wonder if people around her general area are like " oh gosh here comes Safiya in a crazy outfit again"😂😂
I would😂😂
Jalin W., they're just like "Oh no. It's that crazy lady and that weird man with the camera." Or like " Mommy, why is that lady wearing weird clothes?" They must be worried about her.
Safiya has no neighbors
Probably just annoyed with her in general. I know Im getting there. I get that she doesn't understand fashion, and that's OK. But why make fun of something you don't understand?
@@mariasmith2198 what do you mean by that?
It crazy that in years to come people will be making videos about what we wore in 2017
Coralie Anne lol true
And it won't be that pretty tbh...
Ikr, I was still shocked to see how different we dressed in 2007. Time flies
God help them...
Coralie Anne most likely there won't be much progress culturally sorry lol
You had Velma’s glasses shagys pants Fred’s ascot Daphne’s hair
And scobbys personality
True
And shaggy's shoes and pants, and scooby's colors
Yesh
Also Daphne’s scarf
Tyler’s “you have to be mad that there’s any form of government” made me laugh really hard
I actually want that jumpsuit! It's funny to see how styles come back around
BWithEmMarie i love your videos
Did you know that my set all the trends back then and we still do it till this very day
I'm an old school punk. You nailed the look but we did not headbang. That was for the metal kids. Nice styling. You looked great
Did u listen to patti smith? Shes ome of my favourites and I know that she was at the forefront of the grunge movement in the 70s
Her hair for the second outfit looked like fire, but black...
There as of now you have 666 likes lmao!!
right how do punks "dance" to punk rock music?
@@edina0033 It's called Pogo-ing and it's just jumping up and down! Lots of energy, no style, no 'dance' moves as such, just a lot of bouncing around :D (From a child of the 70s who was very bewildered by it all at the time :D )
is it just me or would safiya make a PERFECT wonder woman 🤭🥰
No I see it too!
Yes!!!!!!
with that first look I see it!
Safiya: this kinda makes me feel like an investigative reporter
Escape the night fans: sounds familiar
I got that escape the night reference immediately upon hearing it
Imagine tho if the outfit safiya has today was what they used for the show😂
It’s funny because escape the night season 3 came out a year after this video
@@Bjorkfan69 still salty how she died
Imagine walking down the street and seeing saf run back and forth in her 77's clothing
Her videos always sound like class presentations
CherryRibble MyButt in a good way.
CherryRibble MyButt random, but did she not sound like Muhammed Ali at 1:36 when he does his little rhyming poems? Lmao
CherryRibble MyButt i thought the same 😂
I wish I could present like her 👨🏻🎨
Because she is a journalist, a video creator, she is educated and well researched and informative. Children.
"It's a very counter-cultural twist on Rococo" and THIS is why I love you Safiya
time stamp?
@@badidea932 I gotchu 8:00
Omg, Tyler's John Travolta walk is everything!
Haha the guy that fell near the end 😂😂 that's me when I try to roller skate :/
can't believe he caught himself tbh (also im pretty sure he got pushed, there was a guy behind him and it looked like he pushed him out)
+Safiya Nygaard - you should do maybe a 60s style or even the 30s (marylin Monroe vibes💜💜)
ForestStar Production Studios haha yes! She has a few times already too. I respect her alot. She isn't in this just for CZcams, like others. She socializes with her fan base and it's great. I love that.
Marisol Rodriguez I didn't see anyone behind him but I sure as hell laughed my ass off haha. But that's legit me. I only roller skated once and landed on my face 😂😑
i felt bad but i cant hold my laughter 😭😭😭
I just love how Tyler won't let you look crazy by yourself. Relationship goals right there!!
I love them 😭😭
they're so cute together
12:45 Thay guy in the background... I feel for my man.
Oof-
Yeah, I hope he’s ok. He did take a hard hit to the trash can though.
Panic! at the disco
HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA IKRRRR
@@koolkitty108 YOU DID NOT KSOSOSLS
@@pinkfeind I forgot I made that comment
Definitely my favorite of the "I made Tyler dress up with me" Tyler looks. He looks so adorable. And the two of you together at the roller rink is iconic.
His entrance was magnificent
This channel is a gift that just keeps giving!
Maliha Intikhab definitely
1.7k likes....two comments lol
Let's just acknowledge the fact that Tyler is a pretty great cinematographer!
Indeed
They are honestly couple goals
Malia Intikh
Maliha Intikhab fuck is that
Make a video where you dress like its 1776.
A young colonial boy ready to serve his country.😂
*cough Cough alexander hamilton*
Oh shit, now that's hilarious 😂😂😂😂😂
Seventeen, Seventeen, Se-Se, Seventeen Seventy-Six
@Sugarcookie Studios Who, lol??
I can play the piccolo
Safiya-talks about her nearly falling
Random person behind them-trips over, knock bin/trash can over, slips again 😂😂

YES
You look good wearing anything I swear it's so crazy😩
IKR!!
Her personality is what makes it work
not that surprising. pretty people always look gorgeous even on a garbage bag.
Changoodie she shocks me! Looks amazing in that jumpsuit
That disco jumpsuit looked so comfortable!
They are but you kinda have to be careful not to get what us girls call "camel toe " between the legs...
Honestly, the entire disco outfit really suited her. Maybe not the puffy hair or the tacky blue eyeshadow, but it looked very good on her.
Honestly it looks very current minus the broach
I actually graduated high school in 1977. That was my hair and I had an outfit almost exactly like the first one. Nailed it
I love how she’s not afraid to walk out in these outfits and rocks it out!❤️❤️❤️
True confidence is the ability to look silly and not care what anybody thinks
Tyler is always a good sport about it too❤😂
I love how these are actually educational
I KNOWW
Oh My God! I had a fit of laughing I was 18 in 1977 and I can tell you I would never have worn anything from the JCPenney Catalog! That first outfit was how my mother dressed in 1977! Too funny!
I was 14 in 1977.I loved wearing shiny polyester shirts tucked into a long pair of black dress slacks, the girls in school(8th grade)loved it.
@@gregorycyr9272 my mom was also in 8th grade in 1977
@@Kailee_B OK.I loved those clothes.
@@gregorycyr9272 yee sounds cool tho haha, idk why but my first thought upon reading your comment went to John travolta in Saturday night fever
@@Kailee_B I was never much of a dancer.I still have like 5 of these type of shirts that I have bought from vintage clothing stores.I love wearing them most men do not.I hope your mom is doing ok.I am 60 and am blessed.
Your Midwestern comes out with “ope” at 8:04 and I love it 😂
Not even a minute in and I hear something about matching couple outfits so I am ready
I am looking forward to 1887 seeing you in a corset, lace umbrella and floor length gown...I feel like it would be amazing
SamT Glam oh my god I feel like that’s a hidden Saf aesthetic
IM READY FOR THE AESTHETIC
ugh
YAaaaaaaassss
My aunt grew up in the 70's and still owns most of her outfits from when she was a teenager so whenever I visit she dresses me up in her old clothes and it's always a fun time

It’s actually called the pageboy cut or the Dorothy Hamill wedge.
COUPLES OUTFITS FOR A WEEK
leonie juliette YESSS SAF !!
She did that on Buzzfeeds channel
But I'd love to see it again
yessss
Yaaas!
Is it weird that i feel like in 20 years saf’s gonna be doing what we wore: 2018😂
And one outfit captures the Tumblr SJW fashion style
Just Brinleyxoxo
It'd be 2017
She'd be in her 50s, likely not doing youtube anymore
I was alive for this period and you did and awesome job! I was in college in the mid 1980s and the guys with piercings and tall, multi-colored hair were often much more polite and helpful the preppies. Realizing that is a bit past this video timeframe. I will have to check out your 1987 video!
Tyler strutting down the sidewalk, first thought that came to mind was “DAAAAAAAMN”
12:41 LMAO THE GUY THAt FELL
I DIED LAUGHING 😂😂😂
Mood
I couldn't stop replaying it 😂😂😂😂
That is me 24/7 I am very clumsy
And knocked over a trashcan
Omg Tyler's disco look! Mmmm. And yours too....girl take him dancing!
And that business casual look at the beginning, I liked.
Honestly seventies Disco fashion is hot on everyone
ngl tho the punk look was a LEWK
this reminds me of "That 70s Show"
You definitely nailed the Lynda Carter Wonder Woman look!
SHE LOOKS SO PRETTY WITH THE FIRST HAIRSTYLE/MAKEUP/OUTFIT
I'm excited for '67, '57, '47, and so much more
Olivia Simons she’s a bot, it’s not real! How r u that stupid?
Turttles Foreva just imagine 1937 and '27 and 1907
They might be 68 58 48 tho
Aren't you excited for '69?
Turttles Foreva I am just waiting for 1897 xD
i love saf and tyler’s relationship, it’s so goofy and silly and loving! another amazing video as always :)
Yay! I'm so happy that you rollerskated. It made the video even more interesting and authentic. I would have been so impressed seeing you and Tyler at the roller rink.
“and my mom” 😂

I really hope she goes as far back through the decades as she can that’d be so cool
Lindsey Helene lol all the way to the Stone Age where she dresses like a cave woman.
gigi black lmao can you imagine! I feel like she totally would tho lol
I still think she needs to do a 1940s inspired look
1:52 I just immediately thought of Velma from scooby doo for a second. She said that right after.
Safiya predicted her escape the night role in this video and the season she was in is also base around 1970
Lol, 12:44 me when my crush arrives at my party.
GaLaXy •• 😅😅 lol😅😅
GaLaXy •• 😂😂😂im deed
BAHAHAHAHAHAHSHAA
i died when she started running like shaggy
“I’m just like, dropping out emo babies left and right” 🤣👏🏻
The first look is basically Velma's mum
12:36 LMAO HE CALLED YO ASS OUT
I hope you continue this series and do the 60s and 50s
Margot Chamberlin Don't forget 40s! In my opinion, the 40s are the earliest era that you can wear without looking really hard. (I should know, it's how I dress!)
Safiya & Tyler look awesome in their disco outfits! 😍
4:16
"investigative reporter"
Welp now we know where escape the night got your character choice...
Your videos are always like a fun history lession
Yeah instead of learning about history we s should just watch her videos LOL
I’m literally crying from laughing at the guy at 12:44 and I can’t stop replaying it!! Also love the video Saf!💕
same! hahahaaha
Without the hair, the punk outfit is friggin everything!
The one employee that fell at 12:46 hahahahaha
12:44 kills me
It does
Liv Rohe Tyler’s face when it happens is the best part😂

I love AALLL OF YOUR DAMN CONTENT. Is so anxiety-proof, educates and makes me feel soothe and relaxed.
God number two was such a look. Also if anyone’s curious according to John Lydon (Johnny Rotten, lead singer of the Sex Pistols) in one of his books he actually explained where the safety pin trend started allegedly?? It also ties into the name of the band too because John and Sid worked at a punk fashion boutique of sorts literally named SEX and was run by the girlfriend of Malcom Mclaren (sex pistols manager). She was apparently great at the fashion part of it but was terrible at sewing clothes, but the band members were forced to wear them as a sort of promotion/sponsor deal for the shop at shows, even though they kept falling apart whenever you wore them. So John and other members of the band started keeping safety pins on their person at all times to keep their outfits together onstage, and so it became a fashion trend for punks who thought it looked cool and edgy. The name was also a sort of promotional thing too because they came from SEX, so they were the Sex Pistols ta daaaa. Just thought I’d make a use of this useless information and put it on the internet for maybe one person to come across.
BOI you did not just refer to VIVIENNE WESTWOOD as "The Girlfriend of Malcom McLaren." She's one of the most famous designers in the world. Other than that, good interesting facts!
bert1029 Ahh yeah sorry I forgot her name, I’m not much interested in fashion design lol but thank you for reminding me!
Safety pins came from Richard Hell in 1975-6
Pretty cool
The thing I love about Saf's vids is that they aren't only entertaining, but I actually learn quite a lot from them!
True!
Just watched this one with my kid and you did an excellent job! You didn’t just go with cliches and gave a very realistic representation of the styles of the time. Thanks!
The 1st look is giving me serious Jackie from 'that 70's show' vibes...
Can’t wait till the series gets to the 1917
Ryan Day Yes!!! My thoughts exactly!!! Saf please get to 1917.
Ryan Day I can't wait for 1667 woot woot
i hear the spanish flu was all the rage back then
LIVING for the hair too!
yes, kayley did such a great job!!
fun fact as to why there were so many leather jackets in punk fashion: it was because a lot of bickergangs and other fashion groups who donned a leather jacket had started to go out of fashion and popularity so it was very easy and cheap to find it in your nearest second hand shop :)
“I’m gunna make you a few inches taller today”
IS THIS WHERE JENNA GOT THE INSPIRATION FROM?
Roller skating is coming back in my opinion haha
KittyKittyCuddle :P it's more ice skating now
Sadly...
KittyKittyCuddle :P I agree it is sad because ice skating is waaaaaaaaayyyyyyy more dangerous than roller skating
And you can go roller skating basically everywhere, but with ice skates you need a place to go or a convenient placed frozen lake
true
that Ron Swanson reference thooo 7:37
oh safiya, the ascot is so powerful it will never truly leave.
10:53 aaaaaaaaaand this is why I love him
I love those disco shirts.

Poor lady😂😂😂
I'm crying, everything from the fall to Safiya's reaction... Amazing 😂😂😂
That punk hair instantly reminded me of Vegeta from dragon ball z.
Ninoshka Chang Yes! 👍
Same XDD
Vegeta is a spice we use from Europe
Haha glad it wasn't just me thinking that.
I got to dress like your first outfit when I played Peter Quince in Midsummer Night's Dream. We did it in a 60s/70s theme and it was my favorite theatre costume ever.
That black jumpsuit with the cutouts was extremely flattering on you! 🥰
I saw some old photos of my mom from the 80s and
holy

Her hair was nearly as poofy as my belly after thanksgiving
But how??! Did they have so Much time to do that every morning
I feel weird My mom's weird so when I look back at old photos of her with her sibling they all are wearing black, with emotionless faces. It's kinda scary.
I feel weird
it is not even been Thanksgiving yet!
I feel weird 😂 i am so dead right now
I feel weird Oml XD
The clothes were great but you absolutely fucking nailed the Scooby Doo run.
Edit: as a Brit your attempt to throw the ‘Vs’ was not so great
Saf looks SO good in the first and last outfits. With that and her love of cheat hair, I think she was born in the wrong time 🤣
The punk look... I'm a goth and wear most of that every day... especially the thick combat boots and leather jacket with pins.
Also....Tyler's walk is everything!
I LOVE IT!
If Saf doesn't do the 60's, and 50's I'm going to be shocked. I really really want to see the 50's and 60's!!
These historical fashion videos are so AMAZING! I love you💕
JayJay the Makeup Boi for real!
JayJay the Makeup Boi true
6:44 they practically had been, i’m a current punk and here’s what i’ve heard from elder punks!! the reason leather and plaid was so common in 70s punk (and grunge, but that isn’t our current focus) is because of the death of greaser subculture. greasers started donating leather jackets, flannels, jeans ect. to thrift stores because they didn’t care about them anymore therefore they were cheap and easily accessible. punk and grunge were subcultures born out of poverty, the people who thrifted before it was cool, many of whom were on the street and needed cheap, warm clothes. this meant the greasers old clothes were perfect!!
I see many era videos but, yours are definitely the BEST...you paid attention to detail and correctness! Love the jumpsuit and your punk look!! Keep 'em coming! 👍🦋👍
"hanging out with ben affleck" "ooh... not that part" LMFAO SAF MY QUEEN I LOVE YOU SO MUCH

Thank you!
I am SO going to be bonding with my dad over this video. He was born in 1958, and I was born in 2002. We both like fashion and deep conversations about time, finding your personal fashion style within time periods and genres and I love this channel.
