    As someone who has never played, watched, or cared about soccer, I went to my first MLS game recently and loved it. It's such a great league and the games are so much fun.
    I was always a hockey fan, but I feel like the NHL continually gets worse, and the MLS doesn't have a lot of the issues I have with other leagues. For example, I love how little ads there are. No commercial breaks or ads on the field, and my home stadium only has one jumbotron. At NHL games, I feel like I'm being assaulted by ads and hardly pay attention to the game play anymore. MLS felt so much more pure and down to earth.

    as an European I can say that I love MLS, I have been watching it a lot since 2021, I know all the teams, I know almost all players, just like I know almost all European teams. I think it’s important to remember the league is less than 30 years old and really can’t be held to the same expectations as the top 5 leagues. Given time it will continue to grow in quality and popularity and I’d guess we will move from a top 15 league to a top 10 within the decade. As far as the pro/rep debate, it’ll be fine with or without it. I don’t see it happening personally but I don’t seeing that being the leagues downfall. Plenty of sports don’t use a pro/real system and as far as the argument that teams don’t have to try and or have nothing to play for without it? I think that completely ignored the fact that any human being wants to win. You play for pride and for trophies and for the supporters and just cause your team doesn’t get relegated it doesn’t mean they aren’t utterly ashamed and embarrassed.

      @@isaacgogna9856The United States has had a long soccer history since the 1930s and before due to our nations immigrants, most of our soccer started in the North, Philadelphia regions, Chicago, New York etc. with Italian players and others from Europe, We even had our own league during that time. We even made the first World Cup and made our deepest run ever. The problem is that the league folded and nothing took its place for a long time until the NASL which also folded. We have a long soccer history but it’s lost because we had no stability if MLS can prove to be stable which so far it has we can reach that point again where we can show off our soccer talent. Most people have not been interested in soccer because it’s due to the common assertion that soccer is not the most popular sport in America and they are right but it will be up there soon I believe. There's still a few more major markets that are yet to be tapped via expansion, but along with that, I think we really do need to lean into the true-derby rivalry type of situation. We need more of these rivalries that both fan bases can go to in large numbers. I do realize we still need to get Phoenix into the league, Las Vegas would be a pretty smart move, San Diego is a confirmed add and Sacramento probably needs to come in as well. That's just based on additional geographic coverage and media markets. I do think, however, that we need to keep an eye out for expansion opportunities that are very close to an existing team. Those are valuable.
    I'm looking at San Antonio. Texas is big enough to have 4 teams instead of 3, and San Antonio vs Austin would absolutely be the next big thing. That's-a spi-cy match-up.

US soccer fans does not have the privilige to be born in to cheering for clubs that are more than centuries old etc with set rivlaries and derbys. So far, they don’t have any cable contracts because the ratings have been low and so they don’t have many sponsors. I don’t see appleTV as a solution, but it’s better than nothing for them. Hopefully, the coming of Messi can push the league to the next level, if he can last 3 or 4 years playing great soccer!… the flip side is that good players ( young or old) cost money, and most teams are losing money ( they say)….. even Garber knows that the MLS cannot operate another 15 -20 years at a loss, but by that time, I am sure he will be retired!

    • @eatYoself
      @eatYoself Před 9 měsíci

      @@Slo-ryde I think you're not giving the Apple TV deal enough credit and overvaluing network broadcast. The advantage of Network broadcast only happens with massive games which can draw a huge audience due to easy access, but the world we live in now is all about streaming. I can't think of anything other than news and sports that gets talked about when it comes to network TV, most people will tell you what they're streaming on Netflix, Hulu, HBO whatever is their fancy. MLS is just getting ahead of the curve and you couldn't find a better partner with deep pockets like Apple. They got billions they're sitting on doing nothing, they'll continue to invest if they can make it impactful.
      Also the league brings in just over 1.5bn in revenue from its operations that doesn't include what it's selling to Europe in terms of players. Most people aren't aware of the youth academy situation, but MLS youth academies are no joke and in my estimation will be a major money maker in the near future for MLS.
      I figure MLS wants the reputation of being a selling league where they get enough eyes on their younger product in an attack driven league to drive up their valuation and bank on it.
      MLS is fine and on the right path. Don't underestimate an American's ability to make money.

    It's always going to be so difficult for MLS teams to attract the world best players in their prime. This is because the pinnacle of club football, the highest standard and most prestigious competition is the European Champions League. The only way US teams will attract genuine world class players is if a new world league becomes so popular and overtakes the Champions League or if MLS teams are some how invited to play in the European Champions League.

    • @morosz1159
      @morosz1159 Před 10 měsíci +1

      What mainly matters is money. That’s why players started to make European competitions entertaining. South American and players from other continents started moving to Europe for the money starting in the 90s. Then from there the champions league became big because all the best players in the world were now there. Before this the intercontinental one match game between South America and Europe was mainly won by South American clubs. So money comes first to attract players and after that the prestigious tournament comes

      USA sports teams are highly valuable because of lack of relegations and the league has a draft system
      Ex. If you're a billionaire and you wanted to buy a sports team. You've probably looking for a losing team because you can assume it's cheap...
      If the league has a relegations like the rest of the world. You can buy it in a cheap price
      but if you're buying a mediocre American sports team with a draft system.. you have to spend billions in purchasing it
      Because having a closed league and draft system makes the losing team have a greater chance of having the best young prospect on your team which also increase the valuation of the team
      Plus. Sports stars are more likely to sign in a mediocre American sports team than Sports stars signing in a mediocre European sports team at risk of being relegated
      For example. I can assure you Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe will never sign to any football clubs that is atrisk of being a relegated
      Just imagine. You're a superstar and you're playing in the division 2

He wasn't getting the playing time at Barça and was probably never going to get more so MLS made him a better offer so he came here but to say he chose MLS over Barcelona is hysterically funny. I'm glad he chose to come here because hopefully some of the young and developing talents in Europe who are not getting playing time will come to the United States and play, making MLS a good place to come not at the end of their careers but at their prime.

  • @morosz1159

    MLS isn’t going to be on par with the top 5 leagues ever with the current system. They have improved but are moving to slowly. The only way players are going to go to MLS is if they are offered more money. They need to either expand the dp slots to at least 6 or 7 or just get rid of the rule and create an open market. Usually the best players in top European clubs aren’t even from the same country. If MLS wants to really compete you need the top clubs to be comprised of international stars and not just one or 2. This will only happen with money.

MLS youth academies should not be ignored and that's what MLS is truly banking on, when tiki taka was hot a bunch of MLS teams studied la masia and took their youth program seriously. Many of the young players in the USMNT including Giovanni Reyna are products of those systems.

    Lol no
    I love that we have a high profile domestic league now unlike 30 years ago but we need to accept MLS for what it is. It needs to be a G-League type for young Americans with a mix of veteran star players that come over from Europe. We won’t ever have promotion/relegation so it’s basically impossible for this league to compete with the European leagues in that regard. Not to mention the history those teams have. We’ll be playing catch-up basically forever.
    If the US ever wants to win a World Cup, we need to stop acting like we can copy the European method of doing it and look towards our neighbors in the continent below. Argentina and Brazils domestic league are still some of the best from an international standpoint but they can’t compete with Europe and they know that. So they use their leagues and top teams as development grounds for their star youth players to eventually send to big European clubs, while some veterans stick around and some others come back after “retiring” from their prime. If we don’t do this and start trying to compete with Europe, it’s just gonna leave us with all our top players coming back home, not developing and our national team is gonna be every bit the mess that Mexico currently is.
    Use the MLS as a feeder for top young American stars to go to the top 5 European leagues so they can develop further, then bring them back home after their prime to help the next generation.

    I think you’re overreaching with a lot of these points but the league is growing. First off, Puig coming to the MLS isn’t really as big as it seems because the main reasons were that he wasn’t getting playing time at Barca and probably didn’t have offers that he really wanted in Europe. Secondly, the MLS has “good goals” because the defense is still horrible to the point where people made a name “MLS Weekly Banger” for it. Lastly, top 5 is a HUGE reach but if the league keeps growing and actually improves then a top 20 or MAYBE a top 15 is possible in terms of competitiveness.
