    Many years ago I worked for a company that made circuit boards and the amount of gold used to plate contacts is very very small - around the equivalent of one ounce per square yard so I am not surprised at the low yield. Regarding alternative methods of getting the contacts off of the circuit boards - if you melt them off you need to find a way of removing the copper and nickel from the gold. Typically the gold layer is about 1 to 1,5 microns thick (that's 1 to 1.5 thousandths of a millimetre) the nickel is 4 to 5 microns and the copper is normally about 35 microns thick. The dissolving method is the best way to remove the copper and nickel to leave just the gold as melting the contacts first would produce a gold/nickel/copper alloy which is much harder to separate.

    My wife works for a recycling warehouse. They take in lots of stuff of a wide variety. Some is electronic junk and computers. Some is sold as computers or parts. Some is sold as scrap. A Chinaman usually buys the scrap by the pound, currently the sale price is $11/lb. The warehouse has $0 cost to acquire inventory. The Chinaman then sells to a company in China and the waste is shipped to China for recovery of metals, mostly gold. The Chinese company makes enough cash on the process to pay for the market up on the $11/lb. and the shipping cost to China plus their costs to recover. Yes, you can make money on scrap computer stuff. Here we have a warehouse, a middle man and a Chinese refinery all making a profit. You can make a profit in micro doing recovery. You need a low acquisition cost. What I have seen on ebay is 95% priced way out of wack. You need some volume. P.S. I am a gold mine owner and assayer. My first inclination on this is to mill it all down to 100 mesh, then leach the gold and silver into solution, then precipitate and smelt to dore bar. Using acids and high temps, like 2200 F is all in a day's work. You must know what you are doing. Beware of what I call "hearsay" knowledge. Which is what is plentiful on youtube. Read a book and study it. I own 8 manuals and college texts just on fire assaying.

      @@curtismiller7948 You commented on an individual comment. I didn't create this video and as such won't be putting out a second half. However, you are in luck. The creator of this video did in fact put out a second video, 10 years ago. I would link it for you but its stupid for you to be clicking on potential malicious links on the internet. It should be pretty easy to find though, if you simply go to the creators channel and look at the videos posted 10 years ago. I think he mentions it took 100 memory chips to make just under 2 grams of gold, which is roughly $120 right now. You'll likely spend that just in the chemicals and equipment necessary to process it. If you have way more than 100 memory chips, it might be worth it then. Either way, I wish you the best of luck and have fun.

      @GamesweiveR Před 10 lety

      But why on earth would you extract a precious metal for fun? Rockets, planes and model cars are all stuff that gets put on display or you can actually play with them. Gold is meant to be used as currency.. Even archaeologists who dig for fun make money off their findings, so why is it so far fetched that we'd wanna know the profit potential of this?

    • @adamtolley9129
      @adamtolley9129 Před 10 lety

      Ah Alas Games are you telling me that if you had a nugget of gold and you could display is safely that you wouldnt and you wouldnt play with it i certainly would play with it but dont forget most of us that play with this sort of thing are doing it for the Fun as we already have jobs we dont need to profit from it i only profit from copper and aluminium

    • @GamesweiveR
      @GamesweiveR Před 10 lety

      Adam Tolley Cant really say I would.. I just cant see gold as a toy since it actually holds value. The only reason I'm looking into the profitability of this and other metals is because one of my companies has the ability to acquire large quantities of computer parts for little to nothing and wanted to see if its worth pursuing for the revenue and local press. Someone did mention though that the price of chemicals compared to how much gold it can produce per batch renders the process relatively low profit unless you're willing to smelt, so we'll probably just continue selling the scraps. Enjoy the gold. Later.

    • @adamtolley9129
      @adamtolley9129 Před 10 lety

      In a large quantity you can make good money but need to research on ways to get the gold components out of the computers as doing it manually is not viable if trying to pay wages for someone to do it
      the yield per pound or kilo is greater than what mining the old fasioned way produces
      and researching chemical suppliers can cut back costs also as most of the chemicals if cared for can be reused
      good luck with your endeavours

    • @GamesweiveR
      @GamesweiveR Před 10 lety

      Adam Tolley Had thought about buying wholesale, but these chemicals can be reused too? I'll definitely look into that. I don't use chemicals for the gold fingers. I use my soldering iron to quickly remove the gold fingers from all boards that have those fingers. I use a file on the irons tip,modifying it with a sharper edge. Allow the tip to reach highest temperature,then apply tip at one end and slid it on down the grid of fingers. you will be surprised as to how far up into the board the gold wiring goes. keep the tip clean by running the file over its edges. Some boards have segments of gold plating. refineries have been duping us,telling us there is not much gold in them computers at all,of course it all depends on the type and age of the boards,but the gold is there. You will find it.

    A few notes, since I've been studying this stuff.
    1) I hope somewhere in this series you explain how to reuse/filter and safely dispose of the chemicals to avoid damage to the environment and yourselves.
    2) Your safety procedures were inadequate. You should've been using rubber gloves and a respirator, plus you should've had excellent ventilation so you weren't sucking up toxic fumes. You're playing with stuff you don't seem to fully comprehend, or aren't explaining to viewers, which is irresponsible either way.
    3) Computer boards these days are multilayered and some contain more than just gold. Ideally, boards should be shredded and run through multiple extraction stages to remove gold, silver, copper, palladium, platinum, etc. If you're only doing fingers, there isn't much else to get, but if you want to get the precious metals from the other parts, it's a difficult and dangerous process that you should learn about thoroughly in order to avoid long-term health problems, risk of death, environmental damage and more.

    This video was effin awesome. I am inspired to start up something and actively collect ram sticks. I know I have at least 10-20 just sitting around the house from old comps and I imagine I could find a ton if I go seeking from people that don't need them anymore. I'm curious if you took note of costs and profit. It seems that you are probably doing the video for fun, and profiting more from the views than the gold. I'm thinking about larger scale, and I'm wondering with the supplies roughly what you could offer someone per ram stick and still profit. seems your getting about 70c a stick or so but I dont know what the average "cost per stick" comes to be with your chemicals. Beautiful video! And I love that you defend your wife as your soul mate! Spread your knowledge and stay happy my friend!

      It wouldn't end up very pure. You would also end up with the copper and silver and other metals.

    • @RobertReno1
      @RobertReno1 Před 7 lety

      Well, wouldn't that depend on the melting point of the individual metals? It's my understanding that gold would melt at a lower temperature than those other metals? Perhaps if the proper temperature could be reached for gold, you could melt down only the gold and scrap the rest. Just a thought. :)

    • @unearthlyearthling2901
      @unearthlyearthling2901 Před 7 lety

      Melting pop cans in a home made furnace only produces minimal aluminum. The rest of the gunk is composed of other metal like substances that melt at a lower temperature than aluminum..flaky stuff. So yes, it is possible to get pure gold but you are looking at finding/or building a furnace that can support heats up to 1,100 Celcius or more... Then you just scoop out impurities and repeat the process. There is a more chemical way of seperating gold but I am not sure how that works.

  • @KronicDecay666
    @KronicDecay666 Před 7 lety

    For all you people who want notes without all the BS. Here it is :
    Courtesy of KronicDecay :
    Safety Items Needed for initial extraction of gold fingers :
    Goggles
    Respirator
    Chems Needed :
    Muriatic Acid (Brand : Klean-Strip)
    Hydrogen Peroxide
    (Both From Walmart)
    Urea : purchased online
    Sodium Metabisulfate : online
    Nitric Acid (HN03) : online (video creator does not say but assuming online purchase)
    Step 1:
    Extracting :
    - Use shears to cut off RAM fingers
    - put all fingers in a large plastic container (heavy plastic : think large mayfield icecream container)
    - Add equal parts peroxide and muriatic acid (enough to cover your yield)
    - Let sit 24 hours (if possible let sit outside in sun during day then take inside at night for best result)
    Use glass stirring tool to stir on occasion (helps gold come off fingers)
    After 24 hours :
    - Stir solution
    - Make a container to put a strainer on (Large coffee plastic container with strainer and coffee filter)
    ***USE RUBBER GLOVES***
    - Slowly pour solution into strainer and filter (will take a few pours)
    *** USE RUBBER GLOVES DUE TO ACID PICKING UP FINGERS***
    - Use distilled water in a spray bottle to spray fingers that are left in bucket
    - Spray fingers until gold is off them and toss old fingers into a waste jar for further extraction
    - Continue adding distilled water from sprayer to bucket after fingers are removed to get all gold out of bucket
    - Add again to strainer with coffee filter
    Step 2:
    Refining Extracted Gold :
    Safety Needed :
    goggles
    respirator
    thick rubber gloves
    Chems :
    Nitric Acid
    Muriatic Acid
    Urea
    Sodium MetaBiSulfate
    - Add a shotglass each of Nitric Acid and MetabiSulfate to gold solution
    - Put on a hot plate (turn it on low)
    - Let Sit until gold is disssolved
    - Strain solution through coffee filter and strainer into a glass container
    - Use distilled water in spray bottle to get all gold out of container
    - After all gold is filtered out spray under strainer for stragglers
    - Add 4-5 TBSP water to solution
    - Put back on burner
    - Add Urea (1 TBSP)
    - Keep adding until solution stops boiling
    - Add Sodium Metabisulfate ( 2 TSP ) (Turns liquid gold into solid)
    - Stir after seeing solution reaction
    ** Let sit overnight **
    - Re-filter solution into another strainer and coffee filter (use caution)
    - Gold should be left in original container after straining
    - Add gold to some sort of smelting device and use a torch to heat up until its melted
    - Continue using torch to heat gold up and then allow smelted gold to drip into a below container

Teaching people how to do things on youtube carries a certain amount of responsibility. Proper safety protocols should be used, otherwise, people that don't know any better will think its fine to have lunch while mixing up their etchant or playing with ferric chloride, aqua regia or any of the other ways to process gold bearing pc boards and pins.
      Another thing, the camera woman was standing around commenting, obviously not wearing a respirator. They are making chlorine gas when they mix H2O2 and HCL. It does bad things to lungs. They are in an inclosed, garage it appears?? She was breathing it in small concentrations. Anyone want to guess where Chlorine gas was used?? Rhetorical question...... WWI yep, the Germans used it to kill thousands.

    I've only watched a little bit of this, and your lab technique is dangerously BAD. DON'T tell people to set this stuff outside!!! Birds don't know it's deadly. Same with dogs, cats or children. You need a fume hood to work with acids, one designed to neutralize the acid you're working with. You're a great example of how a little bit of knowledge can be dangerous.

      Whitelyte Design, LLC who cares about stupid animals?

      Obviously not you. Add to the list of "stupid animals" any children that might also find a tub of acid interesting.

    Nice idea etching away the copper from under the gold plating leaving gold flakes.
    However you could actually do this with much saver chemicals like FeCl3.

    For future reference if you're still alive.
    You have particulate/some organic vapor filters on your mask called Magenta/Black. But you need Magenta/Yellow for Acid and IDLH situations..
    I should add that is if you don't want to breath in the acid vapors, if you do, NEVERMIND.
    But the Magenta/Black filters while they will stop some bleach based cleansers and some minor to medium insecticides they won't stop acid vapor.
    So ANYONE else watching, get the right filters !!!!

    Twixter111- I disagree, they both seem to be nice people , kind enough to do a video,( great quality- well documented ).
    I am just starting out on this project and have enough fingers and CPUs ( totally estimated for just under 1 oz smelted ( not troy),
    BUT - I think when melting ,they use Borax or a gold flux to make the gold flow better or something, it is in a power form. There are other vids out there supporting this.We get tons of old CD Roms (Pentium 75s),computers as the ATM's are rebuilt. The scrap guy gets them but I am changing that to a degree.
    Cute do dog too
    Thanks,
    Best regards

    Nice work and I never ever think a 400 dollar computer can contain so o much in gold so we are disposing on waste lands tons of gold on electronic equipment and on our behavior of consumerism we are going to run out of gold in the future omg.thanks to you guys jeep the recovery.

    My friend taught me to take the flakes you show and put them in a crusible with borax and baking powder and use a torch and melt them while using a rod that pulls out the impurities. Did you ever try this?

    *Safety Note* Respirators are ineffective when worn with a beard. Even 1/4 inch of facial hair will break the seal. If someone is using chemicals and requires the protection of a respirator, it is likely the person with a camera should be in a respirator as well. Coffee cup was explained ad nauseam. You did a pretty good job explaining your mistakes while you were making them. Your dog is AWESOME! Had to pee twice from the running water in the background. Alas, I can tell my wife now where the gold can be found. Thanks-

    Did he properly dispose of the used chemicals or did he just pour them down the sink?
