Good breakdown. With the quantity I do, I take the non SATA (or IDE) boards off. Both myself and Shark Scrapper have done the math, and it's not worth the time spent to take SATA boards off, so those get sold as is. When you're running a business, it's kind of sad that you don't get to tear everything down, but it all comes down to the bottom line. One of my favorite quotes..."If it don't make dollars, it don't make sense."

Great video! To the best of my knowledge, the plate where the magnet is glued is made of MU-metal, which shields well and consists mainly of nickel. I have no idea if this makes a difference in terms of price; I'm more of a chemist than a scrap dealer. I've also had two hard drives before that had round glass plates instead of aluminum ones, although they are rare. I then etched away the coating and had excellent glass plates for decorative purposes. It's incredible that the glass disks survive the high rotation speed. I wish you all the best and a wonderful day. Greetings from Germany!🙏

Unfortunately there are no buyers for ewaste in Manitoba, as well as most other Canadian provinces. There is a recycling program set up for free recycling here, but no one pays for the stuff. You pay a recycling eco-fee upon purchase of new electronics to support the program. And, Canada is signed to the "Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal", which generally doesn't allow for easy export of the materials to other countries, so mailing stuff to Boardsort from Canada is technically contrary to the laws here, and apparently Boardsort does not accept international packages, anyway. So, those who sell to them from Canada, have to drive the stuff across the border, then ship from within the US. The United State's regulations for export of ewaste are far, far less stringent than those in Canada. Export of the materials by Canadians still occurs, but technically much of it is being done illegally. In the world of eWaste, much of the low grade ewaste is usually sent to third world countries for processing, and much (not all, but the majority) of the ewaste processing being done in third world countries is being done by criminal gangs, and/or is causing major pollution, taking the lives of those processing the materials, and permanently destroying the environment in those areas, as well as polluting bodies of water, the water table, etc, so rivers take the pollutants to the oceans, where it essentially comes back to us. I had an ewaste recycling business for a few years, and looked into the background of what goes on, and found lots of dirty little secrets that people generally don't know about ewaste processing. A side note for upcycling portions of the drive...the center discs, platters, and other parts can be marketed as art and craft materials to builders/artists for art, props, crafts, jewellery, etc....just save up groups of like components and sell in batches on ebay, ETSY, etc. Used to do that, and did ok with them...got far more money than scrap value.

I must of misheard the pricing because if you take the board off that is worth $1 and sell the rest as a solid piece at $0.35 a pound = $0.41 for a grand total of $1.41, but if you take the whole thing apart you only get a total of $1.34???
If that is true Why Take it Apart???
Please comment and let me know where I am incorrect.. Thank-You

You are correct. But it would cost me over $2 in shipping the hard drive to Boardsort.com. That’s why I just sell them the board and sell the rest of the stuff to my local scrap yard. I should’ve been more clear about that in the video, I apologize for that.
      Thank you for watching.

They eventually get processed to recover the precious metals

If your only option is having to mail scrap material out of state to a company cause you got nothing local to you. I hardly think it would be worth the time to mail scrap material cause of the cost of mailing.

I mailed ram memory stick that cost me $10 in shipping but I got paid almost 80 dollars for them. Some stuff isn’t worth the cost but most stuff is profitable to ship.
      Thank you for watching.
