    First of all, let me congratulate you in showing the people how to extract and refine gold. Well done! As a chemical engineer I am always concerned with the economics part of a process. Can you tell us how much you spent with your reagents and equipments? I know, I know, I am getting a little picky here. Just want to know the return on "investment". I realize the fun part is priceless and I could see how much you enjoyed doing the video. People watching enjoyed it and I did too! It reminded me of my college days.

    Normally I would make some glib comment about the lack of value versus the time spent reclaiming the gold or something about chemical pneumonia from exposure during the process, but not this time. I salute you for your honesty in the value and the fact you tell people you should be wearing your respirator.
    Folks like yourself are helping keep extra crap out of our landfills and that's great!
    Be careful and wear a dust mask when opening old computers as there's metals that are non precious that can cause major health issues after repeated exposure.
    Beyond that great work.

    Shore International sells complete refining systems with non-hazmat chemicals which are much much safer than the chemicals used here; in addition to refining systems, they sell everything needed to start a refining business (i.e., melting furnaces, crucibles, ingot molds, torches etc.) all for under a grand. These systems are pro grade systems used by companies in the field. That being said, these vids are great for a little motivation I really enjoyed them. Thanks.

  • @johnoster4098
    @johnoster4098 Před 5 lety

    Just a few safety and efficiency tips for the aqua regia process; Don't add hydrochloric (muriatic) acid to nitric acid, instead first pour the HCI (hydrochloric/muriatic acid) and then the add the HNO3 (nitric acid) to it, this is to avoid a vigorous reaction and spillage or splashing. Secondly it is always best to add the HNO3 in smaller increments, usually 1 or 2 mL at a time, this is to avoid a)wasting HNO3 by using more than whats needed, and b) wasting SMB(sodium metabisulfite) when using it to neutralize the HNO3; just add HNO3 slowly until all gold is in solution form. But other than that you got it down and thanks for showing the community the process, happy recovering everyone

  • @InvictusMedia
    @InvictusMedia Před 8 lety

    If you add up the cost of buying all the supplies, chemicals, gloves, coffee filters, hot plate, pyrex cups, blow torch gas, respirators, gas driving around obtaining the100 memory sticks and whatever price paid for them and lastly your time spent on the whole process (the one thing you can never get back), I would conclude that you could not break even and are possibly at a loss and spent more than you made. However, this was a great video and I thank you for taking the time to show everyone how it is done. Liked and subscribed.

Sam's Club the peroxide probably get 10 bottles for like 20$.. so now your at 65$ and you can do it in a much larger scale for much longer.

    Just out of curiosity (not criticizing), how much was all that equipment and all those chemicals? it it worth it spending all that money for just $75? Seems to me that you are spending way more than $75 right there, plus the amount of time it takes, I guess all my computer parts are going straight to the dumpster.

    All of you folks making really stupid comments....he made some kind of money, with minimal amount of chemical, got gold out of SCRAP, that would most likely just sit around and collect dust. Why not recycle it. He performed a reasonable process, that I am sure MOST of you would not attempt, you only show your stupidity in making comments. Thumbs up to LifeBussN, and all his efforts!!
    FYI, I have a computer grave yard and am going to do something very similar, This video is one of a fe others I am using for examples and the products to use.
    Again, I doubt most of you that watched this process and made shrewd comments would attempt performing a process to recover gold from scrap.

    I would like to point out a couple of things and a health warning. Aqua Regia (AR) is the process you are using and the formula is 3 parts hydrochloric acid (hcl) and 1 part nitric acid. The amount of gold you digested would only need 9ml hcl and 3ml of nitric acid. Substitute Sulfamic acid for urea and save the urea for the garden. When you added the SMB to the solution, SO2 gas is evolved and is the gas that precipitated the gold. SO2 gas is toxic and when inhaled, it creates sulfuric acid in the moisture in your lungs. When you dissolve metal in HNO3 (nitric) or AR, NO2 gas (red fumes) is evolved. Again,when inhaled will create nitric acid in the moisture in your lungs causing pulmonary edema (swelling of lung tissue). NO RESPIRATOR WILL FILTER NO2 GAS!! When you finished, you melted the gold. Smelting is what you do to ore (rocks) to recover gold from sulfides. Did you develop any flu like symptoms (wheezing,coughing,chest pains,sore throat) after doing this? The symptoms will clear on it's own but it gets worse with each exposure.

    Thanks for the videos, they seem like they will be super helpful. I am contemplating doing a fairly large batch and have a couple questions...1) Is there a ratio of chemicals that you have to use based on the amount that you are doing or do you just need to make sure they are all covered in the solution? 2) If the plastic were left on would it have a negative effect on the process? (Obviously I am not talking about memory chips here) 3) Can you reuse any of the chemicals from the process? and 4) how do you dispose of the chemicals safely once they have been used?

      If you have a way to get the RAM, by the 2nd batch you are making pretty good profit. I also sell the remaining trimmed RAM for about $4 per lb. So, one batch cost $30 for materials, then I made $80 on the gold and another $20 on the remaining trimmed RAM. That's $70 profit for about an hour of my time. Also, the $30 in chemicals is enough to do at least 10 batches. All profit from 2nd batch on....minus labor. Thanks Matthew.

      80 bucks is monthly wage in some places of my country (usually higher but sometimes it is so). So ppl here sometimes hunt for chips and boards among junkyards. I believe they don't recover gold but sell that junk to someone who recovers it. Also they hunt for aluminum cans in summer (cause ppl drink lots of beer in streets that time). 60 cans = 1$. They do this in mornings and nights usually. Also they try to find old car batteries, copper and aluminum things.

    Hello Lifebuzz, I couldn't help thinking I should pass along a little something for you. I you would like to have it turn out better for you the first tie smelting the stuff, if you used a few table spoons of borax in there while your melting it, it would form into a bead that you could get out of the the puddle of borax. the borax has a lower melting point an will stay liquid after the gold hardens while it keeps the gold together. So when you pull it out, it will stay in one piece, the borax will protect it and will rinse right off when you drop it in water to col it the rest of the way.
