EEG: How to record brain waves & the alpha-wave test

  • Here we demonstrate how to record EEG. Not with an EEG cap but just one single channel to show how it works. In general we need three electrodes: +,- and GND. In this case we record the potential difference between the back of the head and the mastoid to obtain a signal from the visual cortex. The GND electrode is simply attached to the other mastoid but could be placed anywhere, for the example on the forehead.
    Alpha waves show up when the eyes are closed.
    See the other clip here about EEG artefacts.

    Hey! It's was an awesome video, indeed helpful. Could you please share the information of the electrodes that you used for measurement?

      Standard ECG electrodes with the adhesive cut away and then held in place with the headband.

    wonderful video maam, actually I am working on preamplifier design can I get the electrical parameter of the dry eeg electrode so that I can design my amplifier using the specification provided from your side, and we can do collaborative work, please do reply, thanks in advance.

    What is the diference you see in the waves during his eyes closed vs eyes open? Is the way the graphic goes above the line or is the actual pattern of the waves? Sorry, I'm a bit confused here

    Wonderful video BPM biosignals - and nice job on answering peoples questions. Have you considered renting out the ATTYS DAQ? While the purchase price is not high, many users might just want a unit for a few days or weeks for a project.

    Great video. I was wondering how exactly you fixed the wires with the electrodes. I know maybe alligator clips were used but it seems as if there's also some sort of gel used?

    • @BPMbiosignals
      @BPMbiosignals  Před 2 lety

      The electrodes were all standard ECG electrodes. The electrodes have studs and you get electrode clips for 4mm banana. The electrode at the back of the head was also an ECG electrode but the adhesive cut away with scissors and then held in place with the elastic band. A sweatband is also quite good for it.

    Hello. There are tons of videos on CZcams with healing alpha waves meditation music. How can I know if these tracks really contain alpha waves and not just a pure music? Thanks.

    • @BPMbiosignals
      @BPMbiosignals  Před 5 lety +1

      Music never contains alpha waves (10Hz). Alpha waves emerge when you close your eyes and the visual cortex gets no visual input. It has more to do with primary visual processing than anything with a deeper meaning but of course there are a lot of people with different opinions as it's always when a signal is very noisy. You can read a lot in it or very little. I'm for the "very little" option!

      You can buy the Attys: www.attys.tech or you can buy the USB-DUX and build your own bioamp (www.linux-usb-daq.co.uk).

    can we also record images from our brain?
    i see pictures i imagine in front of my brain.
    i believe others can see that to.
    i am my own brain mystery and would like to know.

    • @BPMbiosignals
      @BPMbiosignals  Před 6 lety +1

      The brain doesn't do "pixels". There are neurons or populations which fire when you think of certain things. Same when you see it. Of course when you record from the "Bill Clinton" neuron then you know pretty well how an image looks like the person is imagining...

    Hello!
    I’ve been seeing a lot of trends lately about a specific type of brain wave called the “alpha wave”
    I want to know what is it actually? Does it really affect the thinking process? Or is it just another type of wave resulting from our mental/physical state of the mind and the body?(is it affecting a process in the body, or just a product of a process)
    Some people say (in their “motivational” speeches(lol)) that successful people always wake up at 5am because the brain has a lot of alpha wave at that time and it’s a perfect time to learn
    Others say it’s really good for fitness and it helps with fat loss, trying to sell their product (matcha tea)
    I tried to search it but there are so many different answers and I can’t trust any of them yet, so could you please enlighten me?
    Thank you,

    • @BPMbiosignals
      @BPMbiosignals  Před 4 lety +5

      Alpha waves simply emerge when you close your eyes and your visual cortex has nothing to do. Then it generates alpha waves. Anything beyond that drifts into murky territory towards neurobollocks.

    Do you know that the left side were your at is the signal that you can hook up to a monitor and see from his eyes. It just like your voice , talking through a phone and the receiver but your voice back together so the person can hear you it's the same from your visual cortex signal. That same signal can be viewed when you're dreaming so your dreams can come out on the monitor ain't that a trip all true

    How can this be Alpha vaves? No way, Alpha frequencie is the stat of calmnes from wake to almost going to sleep. Closing your eyes, relax a little and you are allready on alpha level thats wrong info.
