So glad you did this video! I thought I was loosing it. I've used Simply White before and knew it was an LRV of 91. Now, I'm about to repaint our new home and noticed on BM site that Simply White was now listed at 89... I thought maybe a typo..Well, thank you for the clarity! I'll be interesting to see what a different it'll have on the walls.

So interesting! I've kept a list of some paint colors and checked a few more, Mascarpone went from 91.36 to 89, Crisp Linen from 91.87 to 89.63. If this is across the board, I agree that it must have to do with the formulation of the base. Would love to see a side-by-side comparison of a couple of these paints' old and new formulations on a wall! Would it be detectible?

I was scared because James I know you don't love it. But I'm telling you it's wow!!! I used to have simply white for trim and walls were smokey embers this is way brighter opens up the room. Dining room living room I painted pale oak (used to be smokey taupe) and bottom half of wall is mouldings that we painted Chantilly lace and it's also beautiful.

As far as I'm concerned, this is awesome of you to point out! I like to start with a vision in my head on a project and then turn to data like lrv and undertones to help execute it successfully. I recently wrote the lrvs on the backs of all my paint chips. I'll have to check and see if I used the new or the old numbers. Interesting and good to know!

I expect it's because they've changed the opacity in response to complaints about how many coats it takes to achieve good coverage as you mention. That might make lighter colours seem darker and darker colours a tad lighter. The thickeners used to get to the right colour density would have that effect; we've all used deep reds and blues that are virtually translucent and require endless coats to get a decent cover. F&B have had complaints in the past regarding some of their shades and they changed their formula a little while back.

I just did a couple of rooms in White Dove with Chantilly lace for trim and ceiling. Contractor did have to use 3 coats on trim. But the 2 colors look beautiful together. Still have several rooms to go. I hope the new formula colors still look the same together.

The LRVs for most, if not all, of the BM paints have been reduced. I noticed this when I researched information about another paint color that I had planned to use. I know that I mentioned these LRV changes for a different video. I said several months ago that I had used White Dove (White Dove had an LRV in the 85 range) to paint trim during mid-2021. I found that the LRV for White Dove was changed in brightness by about +/- 2% during 2022 from the LRV published for the same color in 2021.

I noticed that something was off with the BM whites several months ago. I purchased Sampalize paint sheets in multiple BM paint colors and when I would buy the actual BM aura paint and create my own sample on the wall there was a noticeable difference. I don’t think Sampalize was getting the new formula.
A year ago I picked up multiple BM dark paint samples for the exterior. There was something going one even then with the formulas because I would put them on the exterior and they wouldn’t look anything like the paint card. Then in frustration I would buy the same sample cans again at a different store and put them side by side. Completely different.

  • @suzannahrobertson78

They probably just added a tiny bit of black to the white base to help with coverage. Other paint companies do this specifically for coverage reasons. It can be frustrating to constantly be explaining that "Chantilly lace is brighter than the straight white lifemaster, so it'll be a bit darker" it's also frustrating to hear people complain that "this paint doesn't cover very well" when you do put it in to a bright enough base.... I'm glad they did this.

I bet and wonder, James if…there is a Sherwin Williams version of Chantilly Lace, see and check if there might be any similarities to one another.
I’m like you, James. I’m just as perplexed and befuddled on this white paint color dilemma. I bet and think if you did a part 2 of this video, with part 2 delving into the Sherwin Williams whites collection, and what their LRV’S are, I’ve got a funny feeling that 😁 Benjamin Moore may be sipping on one too many cups of their tea and…maybe seeing double? 😁 They might be a bit drunk on tea. 😁
But yeah, I would compare Chantilly Lace to any of the Sherwin Williams whites collections and check out their LRV ranges.
And this is something else I thought about too.
I think the reason why Chantilly Lace may and would look darker is because…it was and had been painted on a dark colored wall.
That might be why. And there’s plenty of dark colors that can do that to a white such as Chantilly Lace. Dark gray, black, navy, azure blue, Hunter green, barn red. That, I think might be a cause of some whites not coming off as bright as the homeowners or anyone expected.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Sherwin Williams have started doing the same thing Benjamin Moore are doing with the LRV’S of their colors too.
