Plumber here couple rounds with the primer couple rounds with the glue and prime the face of your pipe too looks better than most apprentices I’ve worked around and some plumbers but don’t over complicate it bud appreciate the simple video for beginners and 1/4 turn is fine don’t turn continuously or it may leak. Easy way to do that is use the lettering on the pipe as a guide insert into the hub with the letters facing 8 o’clock and turn them up to 12. Hold them in as they will push out sometimes. And keep making videos like this 👍🏼 everybody does things for the first time at some point in their life and videos like this may help I used this to explain something to my wife

Well, depending on your location, some inspectors may require you to prime the entire pipe, I suppose. To be honest, the pipe actually looks really lovely when the whole thing is purple. Think about it, right? Purple pipes everywhere! Very sort of Willy Wonka-ish. Even though the pipe is now entirely purple, you may still have to put a lot more around the end, and go around with brush at least 247 times, long enough for the pipe to be visibly melting from the primer. Then, once fitted, it may have to be turned the same number of times, 247. In some locations, 248 turns may be the standard, that one extra turn making a big difference. I think the inspectors have a device that can determine the number of turns, so, whatever you do, don't skimp on the number of turns. I mean, is it really worth failing inspection because you couldn't be bothered to give that extra turn? Think about it guys. This whole process, of course, depends on many other factors, too, such as elevation, wind speed, air pressure, whether or not you're east or west of magnetic north, and, of course, you may have to do this on a day you don't eat any chicken or shellfish. Yeah, something like that. I learned all of this from a conversation I had with a gentleman on a train when I was travelling through captainkirkmanistan, back in the 80's. He was a Master plumber, if my memory isn't failing me. Or did he say he was a 'master drummer,' and I mistakenly heard 'plumber?' I don't know. Anyway, I hope this was helpful in some way :):):)

I'm 47 and its my first time. I just cleared my first kitchen sink drain with those tommy gun snake drills. I lived in a lot of rental situations most of my life and never really had to worry about it.

Nice vid, and your right, those inspectors REALLY like and want to see that primer, and no one wants to have to redo a pipe b/c if that; ESPECIALLY, when you have a very short stub out to begin with. Brother, I've been using pvc pipe for 30 yrs.. first I've heard of ""30 times" with the primer. Just circle around 3 or 4 times. Same with clue, then put it together with marks lined up.

The last time I messed with PVC was for my potato cannon build about 25 years ago. Now I'm making an oversized net (fishing style) for ensnaring boxes I can't reach from my wheelchair. The hoop will be a square 42". I'm using a 1" ID. The pole is 6', but I may cut that a bit. I will see how much length is practical after I use it. I'm gonna see about this baseball net. Hopefully, it will handle the task. Anyhow, thanks for the instructional video. The only thing I wasn't sure about was if I had to wait X time for the primer to set. I'm glad there isn't a curing time to worry about.

Bevel/chamfer those ends, seems to be a common thing inspector looks for. Agree that too much time spent with the primer allows it to dry out. I was always taught to cement the male and female both.
Fernando You must always prime and apply glue to the end of the pipe that guarantee’s you won’t get a leak. Also always apply the glue to a primer’d joint while the primer is still wet. I suggest reading the instruction labels on the glue and primer Peace out
Tip for better glue joints: Prime the outside rim of the pipe, too. You want everything that touches the inside of the hub to be purple. Glue the rim of the pipe as well.
@@akanesoratobu8889 primer causes a chemical process which fuses the 2 pvc surfaces into one, which is your water seal. Without it, you will be leaking very soon. The glue provides mechanical support to prevent breaking, so you def need both
I usually only go around the pipe two or three times with each brush. I also use a lot more primer and glue on every fitting, and call it a day. It always works for me.
Using MORE is not better. And never put the cement/solvent in the female fitting... it just ends up inside the pipe/fitting. Defeats the purpose of deburring and priming. Your advice is making things worse. Stop pretending you know something when you do not.

Very wrong, the ASTM standard for gluing and priming pipe is 30 times TWICE on the both the fitting and pipe with BOTH the glue and primer. Both IPC and UPC code books state that ASTM D2855-96 standard be used when WELDING pvc pipe... NOT GLUING.
@@MisterGreenGuy I feel like since you said this over and over I should correct it over and over. That ATSM standard doesn't say 30 revolutions. Cite the specific part of that code that says it must be 30 revolutions on each. I think you may be misreading 30 MINUTES of curing time.
Yep... And if you use channel locks make sure to keep the locks towards the top of the lid... Anybody who's done this with channel locks knows exactly what I'm talking about and why

I am not a plumber but I think you need to read the manual on the can, because all products are different. For example it say to hold for 30 sec and turn 1/4 a turn.
30 times around with the primer is serious overkill. I've watched pros and I've done a lot of my own repairs, and you just need to get it on there and cover the surface fully...a few times around the inside and the outside is all I've ever done. Same with the glue. What I was hoping to find out here, which I found in another video, is if the cement should be like jelly or like water. It should be more like water than jelly. If it's like jelly, throw it out, it's no good anymore. Other than that, your video is great. Thanks!

Not true at all! The MAIN purpose of primer is to melt the pipe in preparation of a chemical WELD.... not a glue joint, but a weld. Both IPC and UPC require gluing standards of ASTM D2855-96. LOOK IT UP. You're very wrong and giving out horrible advice.

By the time you're around it 30 times your primer on the other side is dry, then 30 times around that, the pipe is dry so you would have to re apply. Just apply evenly and a few times and you're good to go. But if you have a link to the code and can cite the exact language I'm more than happy to be wrong about the "30 revolutions".
Prep the very end of the male piece also ~ the edge that is. Does that sense? The edge that is cut. That edge will weld with the inside stop on the female piece.
Where ruber glolves if you have them. That purple primer can make quite a mess. My pipe don't seem to seat properly and I'm wondering if I should sand it down?

COMPLETELY unnecessary. There isn't even anything for that surface to weld to since the stop is shorter than the wall thickness. Ugh

Thanks I needed this. Had to research how to open a new Oatey can too. Turned the can over, tapped several times on a hard floor to unfreeze the lid.
Some channel locks always does the job.

Twice around with primer on each piece, apply glue to each piece join pieces together make 1/4 turn hold for a few seconds done.

I bought Oatey medium orange cement (for CPVC) by mistake for my PVC sink drain. I used it, do I need to re-do it or do you think it will be OK?
