I think I know why everyone in the movie acts so weird. It's because the movie is told from a kid's point of view. The late-80s and early-90s seem to have this "kids rule, grown-ups drool" mentality, and when it came to Nintendo, kids were experts and grown-ups were stupidheads that were stuck in the '60s and don't know a thing about Nintendo. The kids in this movie talk like professionals because that's how kids viewed themselves. The adults act strange because, let's face it, kids think adults don't know what being cool really is.

I think it was to imply Jimmy the character from the movie. Since he didn't mention the kid's actor's name. Plus they do look a like and I bet the real actor that played Jimmy is an angry nerd in real life.
And BTW, though the movie is bad mostly (I'd say it's ok, not bad), it has one scene that's bloody hilarious. Where the girl says the guy that's after the kids sexually harassed here and how, getting the security in, is funny as hell. As a kid, I was confused, but now I can't help but laugh. Just like Doug has to hold it together for I WAS FROZEN TODAY!
The reason why Fred Savage sounds like a high pitched adult is because he's three years older than he looks. He's 13 in this movie, but he looks like he's 10 and a half or something.

If I remember correctly, that was their entire marketing campaign for the Wii (that everyone could play it... and that actually worked well), and half their marketing campaign for everything else. And to be fair, a lot of adults played Mario and stuff with their kids.
