I’m a German teacher, and I use Rammstein often in my lessons. Their lyrics are usually simple and repetitive - great for learning - and if the kids like the music as well, it encourages them to learn.

The Gladbeck hostage-taking (also known as the Gladbeck hostage crisis) was a high-profile crime in West Germany and the Netherlands in the summer of 1988, during which three people lost their lives. The bank robbery with the subsequent taking of hostages began in Gladbeck in North Rhine-Westphalia and ended after around 54 hours on Autobahn 3 near Bad Honnef with an access by the Cologne police's special task force (SEK). In the aftermath of the crime, the behavior of the police and reporters was massively criticized and a social debate about the responsibility and limits of journalism was initiated. The behavior of the journalists, who hindered the work of the police due to their close proximity to the events, later sparked an intensive public debate. Among other things, several interviews were conducted with the perpetrators, a press photographer acted as a liaison to the police and a Cologne journalist rode in the getaway car to show the perpetrators the way out of the city centre. The Gladbeck hostage-taking is an important subject of investigation in media system research.

It should also be said that Rammstein's videos often have nothing to do with the content of the song. This is also the case here.

    • @haraldmax9685
      @haraldmax9685 Před 4 měsíci +19

@@hallomatti The song is about the business model, the influence, the power and the unscrupulousness of the media. And about the consumers who consume what is put in front of them, which influences their thoughts and attitudes.
They are said to have got the idea for the song and the presentation from the Gladbeck hostage-taking mentioned above.
The lyrics outline in a simplified and ironic way how the media approach their consumers and what demands they have in the context of the reality they have created.
In the video itself, you can see cameras everywhere, even the dead woman being dragged across the floor has a camera in her hand. The whole robbery is all about staging, about presenting themselves in front of the cameras, creating a situation that the cameras can focus on in order to market it. To top it all off, the bank robbers receive a media award for their media-friendly staging and the applause of the public indoctrinated by the media.
So I think text, video and inspiration are clearly linked here.

@@hallomatti Thats not true phrased that way. Lyrics and video often have a lot of links and interact a lot. It's just that they almost never literally show what the lyrics are talking about, because that's the easy and boring way to do it. And in this case, the video gives the lyrics new depth and expands on them. Quite the opposite of "nothing to do with the content of the song".

One little fun fact to that track: it was the first song they designed to actually involve the audience. before the songs worked for themselves, although e.g. "du hast" works great on concerts with the audience, but this song actually needs the audiences response and they weren't sure this really works out. I guess you can say it worked out :D

Yaaas you guys finally reached it. My favorite fucking Rammstein music video since I was 15 years old and still now. It’s the love letter from the band to the fans. It’s the one that fans are a part of the song and we are the echo back. The band asks if we can see them, if we can hear them, if we can feel them and we shout back YES WE DO with a volume and fervor that Till is thrown back at how much we stand behind them and love them. The music video is obviously an exaggerated circumstance but it’s to say that Rammstein could rob a fucking bank and the fans would surround them and protect them to the point that they can’t breathe. In the end, they’re still winning awards incarcerated in infamy and Flake is honored like a messiah. It’s a dangerous love but that’s Rammstein, baby.

The Baader-Meinhof gang (terrorists) was a different story and mostly happened when the later Rammstein members were living in the Soviet-controlled East-Germany. The terrorists didn't give interviews and the media was not interested in their point of view. I assume the inspiration for the song and the video was another (and later) true crime. In 1988 there was a bank heist in Germany (Gladbeck), after which the perpetrators fled and took hostages. During the escape, journalists conducted several interviews with the perpetrators and obstructed police work. After 54 hours of flight through almost half of Germany, the perpetrators were caught. Two hostages and a policeman were killed. The behavior of the journalists, who hindered the work of the police due to their close proximity to the events, later sparked an intensive public debate.
In the video Rammstein seems to provoke media attention by the heist, not primarely to steal money. The line "Wir wollen in Beifall untergehen." (We want to drown in applause.) indicates it. The live version of this song (e.g. Ich will - live from Hurricane Festival 2016) shows a great involvement of the audiance.

    LiveJuly 1, 2023 in Italy/Europe Stadium Tour 2023:
    czcams.com/video/Q74bAooyB0A/video.html
The song/music video is actually 23 years old. The song is an interaction live between Till/band and the crowd:
Till: We want to see your hands (the entire crowd raises their hands),
Till: we want to be drowned in applause (crowd: claps)
    Till: Can you hear me?
    Crowd: we hear you
    Till: Can you see me?
    Crowd: we see you
    Till: Can you feel me?
    Crowd: we feel you
    Till: we don't understand you
The video is about getting attention by manipulating the media and becoming famous. The media gains attention through a big story. Richard accidentally triggers the alarm with his prosthetic hand. The band gets their media attention, gets an award, the media gets attention from the bad guys and Flake makes himself immortal because he blows up.
At the end are short excerpts from her videos "SONNE", "SEEMAN", SEHNSUCHT", "DU RIECHST SO GUT", "DU HAST", "STRIPPED (cover version of Depeche Mode's Stripped)

I think it is even better live. Try czcams.com/video/6SXZN_yLJi4/video.html I believe in the first verse Till is speaking for the band, second verse for the press (almost the same lyrics but obviously faked sincerity and slight changes like "I want You to believe me" to "We want You to believe us EVERYthing") For me it is about the communication between band and fans inspite of the press that gets in between. And what You said about double meanings - f.i. "we wanna see Your hands" - from the band it means just "raise Your hands clap for us" from the press it is "we wanna see what You are doing so show us Your hands"
Live it is great because of the crowd singing to the band and Tills acting on stage for the second verse. Just beautiful.

A man who built an apartment soundproof and kidnapped his daughter and kept her there for over 20 years fathering 7 children, some who died. The song is about how the press and journalists at the time (and even today) portrayed the band in their favor. Namely, in a bad mood, because it is profitable for media representatives to make money on Rammstein at the expense of hype. In the scene of the video, the bank robbery represents Rammstein's "another" bad deed, so journalists arrive at the scene with the aim of "killing" the band, with a live broadcast from the scene. But behind the press are ordinary people who are fans of Rammstein and respond to the lyrics that they believe and trust the band, despite the media version. At the end of the video, Flake blows up a bank, but no one is killed in the explosion, but snippets of the video are shown, which have served as a propaganda tool among the media, who at the time were using Rammstein to smear them. "Flake" dies, sacrificing himself on behalf of the group.

"Angst" is a good reference, bro. It's showing how we glorify evil, through media, through fandom, through stockholm syndrom. If you want another strong video about that topic check out "Make Me Famous" by Kim Dracula. By the way, Rammstein's last video "Adieu" summarizes many old videos and "the robbery" from Ich Will is a huge part there. Cheers!

I first saw them at the Roxy a club in NYC 25 years ago..lol.. people are so late to the party.. Its so funny to me because I loved them the first time I heard them around 1997ish and some people in the metal and industrial crowd thought they would never get any traction outside Germany and hated on it. I've been going to German industrial festivals for decades now.. its a deep rabbit hole and much better than the Anglo or American scene these days

If you want a deep dive into Till's art, review his solo song "Zunge." It's a beautiful car crash. It's haunting and horrifying, but you can't turn away. The song itself is heavy as hell in multiple ways.

Rammsteins lyrics of the 90s weren't too deep as such but still straight on point. With their Reise Reise-album in the early 2k's the defininetely evolved lyrIcally IMO

You should check out “Auslander”. The video is fun and the song is really catchy. The message is always deep with Rammstein. They don’t do much without a deep meaning.
Also “Radio” is a great one also kind of fun and catchy and not as heavy as some of their music.
