Fat = Bad is the old paradigm (that resulted in the obesity epidemic beginning around 1980). It's starchy foods (bread, macaroni, rice, corn, fries, chips, biscuits, cookies, pastries, soda) along sugars and trans-fat/omega-6 fats that are the villain.
Any news story about a new medical procedure, a cure to a disease, or an experimental vaccine, the internet doctors come out of the woodwork thinking they know so much more, because they googled something off a random blog.
Most of those kids came out of there with one form of eating disorder or another. Many gained all the weight back and more. I know all of them because I was one of the kids in the video. We were all terrified to gain the weight back. Wellspring taught us that there is no such thing as moderation and they preached to us that we should develop a, "healthy obsession", where we should feel really bad if we messed up but not too bad to where we would want to quit. We were meant to aim for 0 grams of fat a day because they told us there was no such thing as a healthy fat, so we desperately tried to fill up on fat free foods, but to our dismay we always failed to adequately satiate our appetites. When we came back home and back into the real world, most of us failed to uphold our new "healthy lifestyles", no matter how long we had stayed at school and subsequent summer camps. We rapidly began to put the weight back on. We felt like it was all our own faults. That it was a character flaw and personal failure, that we had let our families down and waisted everybody's time and money. Really, we were set up for failure from the start with an unrealistic diet and view of healthy living. Some kids ended up with bulimia, anorexia, or bingeing disorders, depression, etc, and needed further treatment for those problems. This school is no longer running.
ik this is late but how was it unrealistic I mean they gave you good amounts of food and lots of exercise what else are they suppose to do to help you lose weight
@@itsizrasroblox having 0 grams of fat a day is unrealistic. Becoming healthier has to be a lifestyle change. So you are saying teenagers are going to live the rest of their lives consuming 0 grams of fat and never eating any junk food ever again? That is so unrealistic. They should be teaching the kids that it is okay in moderation but most of their diet should be clean and good. Also, personally I think the school should be more focused on sugar intake and not fat intake.
What are you talking about? They give them education on nutrition. Losing weight is what these kids need to do and is a side effect of eating healthily.
@@Me-Want-SnuSnu But not this quickly. That's the problem with places like this and shows like Biggest Loser. It isn't realistic and they aren't equipped to keep up this amount of physical activity in their regular lives. Also, 0 grams of fat isn't good. There are healthy fats in fish and avocados necessary for weight loss and a healthy brain.
Phew, I was a really skinny kid for kindergarten to 4th grade (even getting some muscles) . But in 6th grade I was way fatter than what I was used to. No joke hated myself, during the summer to go to 7th grade. I starved myself for days, and would to push ups for an hour a day.
Why no fat? Just control the damn calories! Healthy fats like those in avocados, nuts and seeds are really important for all sorts of functions in the body.

a zero fat diet is not healthy :( (Edit: because bodyfat and dietary fat are different things, and while they need to reduce bodyfat, you still need to ingest some dietary fat to maintain proper hormone production and absorb fat-soluable vitamins and minerals effectively)
+River River fat on your body is completely different from the fat macronutrient XD. Your body needs fats to absorb micronutrients and such, and healthy monosaturated fats are good for you as well. We even need saturated fats in moderation to survive. So eating fat does not make you fat lol
+River River you don't know very much about nutrition then. If a heavy person stops eating healthy fat and exercises every day, they're going to lose muscle mass if they don't eat healthy fat

Kenia Liz I imagine most of the money comes from them taking care of your child. I agree with you since this school costs about as much as an elite boarding school, but they have a lot of physical trainers, psychologists, and extra stuff to help the students lose weight. This is mostly for kids who can't seem to lose weight on their own.
Well for some people it's worth it because for some it is hard to find the self motivation (especially for kids and teenagers) to lose weight and eat healthy. I struggle with that myself (although I am not overweight)
Nice to see this place creating positive change in so many young people. And for people worried about anorexia, keep in mind, many of these kids were on the road to an early grave (diabetes, high blood pressure, etc). Now they are gaining self respect and living happier. Good for them.
@@rlee3538 but she expressed a fear of it. Obviously not wanting to gain weight when you are tying to lose weight is normal, but being PETRIFIED of gaining FIVE POUNDS is definitely the beginning of disordered thoughts
To all the people saying it's their parents fault - not necessarily. Weight is a slow gain and the changes happen overtime so it's hard to notice until you look back. On-top of that, certain eating disorders like binge eating disorder can go completely undetected until it's too late. It's not always as easy. This school is amazing. Gives people a chance and some hope when they are on the verge of giving up.
This reminds me of that movie called “Heavyweights” which was about a fat camp that forced kids into extreme weight loss exercises with Ben Stiller as the Instructor

I'm underweight too but nobody seems to care for that I'm trying to gain weight but it does not seem to work I wish I knew a way to gain more weight yet still be healthy
It's considerably more difficult to do the same for underweight people. If people who are underweight don't want to take in food, it's rather hard to force them/keep them from getting the food out again, wheras just not giving as much is considerably easier.
@@juliecortez1448 Having been in that situation, I'd recommend just having regular meals, having a light workout routine(which helps improve appetite and overall health). You could also go for the fast food way, though I'd really recommend just regular eating. Though if you're under 18/19, don't worry too much, since after growing spurts people tend to be underweight for a while.
You could do this or you could work at UPS loading up trucks with packages. You actually get paid really well and on top of that, I have lost 26 pounds during the 8 months so far I have been employed there.
Lydia D - it’s not crazy extreme, but it is a very healthy and maintainable rate of weight loss. You should never lose more than 2 lbs a week unless you’re either a) super morbidly obese (in terms of proportions, people on that end of the weight scale can safely lose a lot more weight a lot faster for the first portion of their journey) or b) under extremely careful supervision by a doctor. When my Lupus was first undiagnosed and the disease caused me to lose weight very rapidly, the doctors weren’t too worried with 5lbs a week for the first few weeks, then they became very keen on drastically slowing the rate. The last month I was in a healthy weight range and still losing 2-3 lbs per week. Then I got diagnosed, was put on chemo, and my weight stabilized. I was incredibly grateful because the next step would have been forcing me to drink those hideous Ensure type drinks, which make me puke. Ugh.
Congrats! You left this comment 9 months ago, I hope things have continued in a good way for you. Around where I live, if you want to lose weight, you get a job with Amazon. I’m near a large fulfillment center and the constant walking can quickly equal 10 to 15 miles every day, 5 to 6 days a week.
They said 0 grams of fat a day? That's not good at all, simple carbs is one of the main contenders for weight gain not fat, sure fat is high in calories, leading to weight gain. But our body needs healthy monosaturated fats and even some saturated fats to function properly. I can't believe some people still believe that eating fat = getting fat
It's veggie sausage not actual sausage but ya I totally agree a zero fat diet is not ideal for weight loss. They need fats and carbs but are given too many carbs and allowed to pour Splenda on their fruit and yoghurt and are given pasta, oil-free stir-fry, bagels, egg whites, and soup. Yuck!
carbs are not the leading because of weight gain. Unhealthy eating is the because of weight gain. Carbs are not unhealthy in moderation eating a crap ton of them is though. also keep in mind that carbs are things like fruit as well my just breads.
+Jillian K oh ya I agree too much carbs is bad but you do need some. But they need more fats too. My friend went to this school ages ago and said it was torture.
+Jillian K actually the cause of weight gain is a calorie surplus, you could eat junk all day and if you still aren't in a caloric surplus you wouldn't gain any weight. But there is research that shows if most of your daily calories are carbs you will gain weight much easier.
W camp Carolina🔥🔥🔥 This “school” was discontinued and made into a summer camp I go to every summer. The camp has been a camp for like 100 years but the “obese school” was discontinued
staff to teach, clean, cook, be on campus 24/7, wash clothes, train the kids? Food for a year? Accommodation? school material? Granted it's expensive but it's not a day school... you live there for the year; obviously it'll be more expensive.
Based on a quick google search, the average cost of taking care of teen in the US is about $13,000 a year. The average cost of private school is about another $12,000 a year. Then one must add in the cost of the coaches, maintaining the cabins, etc. Plus, costs will be more than the average private school because there is likely far fewer students there, so they have to cover the same cost that many more would usually cover. Is it tough for most families to afford? Yes, but is it necessary without some other form of income or stipend, also yes.
this is a good camp, but you need fat in your food. resticted, but there has to be some. also, you should limit sugar, because it makes your liver store the material as fat as the only option.
lol, read up on macros, because he is 100% correct trans fats and saturated fats are completely different than what you store on your body.. fats have essential nutrients that you cant get from other foods as easily which you need if you are following a regular workout regiment, i'm no doctor but you can totally google it :)

It's not necessarily what you eat but how much you eat. You can eat pizza or cake but don't eat the entire thing. It's all about moderation and exercise.
For the part that said one in three school-age kids are obese or overweight, I think that for the majority of them, they were born into it. Quite unfortunate for them but a lesson that their parents should learn from. To anyone who is currently on their em weight loss journey, I hope you are doing well, and keep pushing through. Something to keep you motivated is to think of how your life will be once you reach your goal! Cheers and good luck!
miffyLOVE not really. She has a goal of losing weight and reaching a normal weight. If she was already average or underweight and had that mindset, then you would be right.her fear of gaining is just fear of backtracking in all her progress. Nobody wants that.
Fat is not the issue. Calories are not the issue (although overeating doesn't help). Food choices are the answer. Lean protein, vegetables, good fats like nuts/seeds/avocados, and fruits - in normal, healthy amounts. I lost 20lbs in two months (going from an overweight 185 to a normal 165) on just lean protein and vegetables, lost another ten pounds in the following year, and am still toning/shaping up. I'm basically modified paleo (occasional dairy treats) and I've never been healthy until I changed my diet. I never had the energy to exercise. (Granted, I potentially have NCGS, which I refuse to test for because I refuse to eat gluten daily for six weeks - I'd rather live without it than go through major depressive episodes and severe stomach cramps for six weeks) I like Wellspring's philosophy and how much they actually seem to care about the kids who want it badly enough - but I do agree that they're going about it the wrong way diet-wise. Just my personal two cents. What worked for me may not work for everyone, and that's okay. But a thought - if calories are the only things that matter, by that philosophy you could eat the same low-calorie amounts of baked potato chips or broccoli and still lose weight on just the potato chips. Has anyone actually tried this? I'd like to see the results.
***** I went from 238 to 154 pounds in 9 months. Did what you did, cut out wheat and gluten first, then took lactofree drinks, then cut out soy, then milk, then sugar, then caffeine. Also exercised like mad. Still have 28 pounds(at least) to go, getting there!
***** I also have had potato chips daily since starting this diet and lost weight, i also ate cheese as well. You CAN eat what you want but you need to burn it off. I was working in two physical jobs whilst exercising at night. I then ended up with muscle wasting because my calories were so low. Started eating gluten free cornflakes to bulk it up and a bit more fruit. They, as a camp, should have a little bit more fat, less carbs and get rid of the bloody dairy, give them something else with calcium in it(i detest dairy for its side effects ) i wonder if they get fatty fish at all? I also ate salmon religiously and still lost weight
cokerainbows THIS. Good for you, dude! It's true - if you do it right, you can eat whatever. I have dance for two hours a week and work out minimum thirty minutes per day almost every day, so my body burns through food like crazy - I'm hungry within three hours after eating one meal no matter how much water I've had, because my meals consist of veggies, meat, and maybe a piece of fruit. In regards to your other comment - I can have organic potato chips once in awhile (apparently potatoes are now paleo), although usually when my body isn't used to something and I eat it, I have major stomach cramps afterwards. I've had to majorly reduce my dairy intake in the last few months because of how bad I feel afterwards. I LOVE salmon - if they don't get proper fats, they're losing out on the HEALTHY way to lose weight...
***** I would just take dairy out, it's no good for you, i don't think i've ever felt so good since taking it out my diet. The stomach pain is a major red flag, your stomach clearly isn't liking some of those foods or the dairy. I like to eat more naturally, i'd say my downfall is potato chips(im calling them that even though im used to "crisps", i'm from the UK) but apart from that, i don't think i'm too bad. I'm always shocked by how much humans consume though, a lot of it is really unhealthy and you don't see many people walking around that are very healthy, they are either fat, obese, flabby or super skinny/untoned. Good for you exercising like that though, that takes motivation!
Nonononono! I'm definitely NOT intending to blame the companies ENTIRELY. I understand it's the parents' fault too. Trust me, I do. Most peraonal trainers are not dietitians. We have knowledge and some have extreme knowledge. But some specify in different areas. I work best with people in their 40s that aren't even fat and just trying to keep in shape as they're aging. So I do functional movements and calisthenics. At the same time.... I feel this what they need too. But I can't deal with these types. I feel you need to have good supportive skills and a bunch of patients.

I’m telling you, once you lose the weight and workout, you truly will look good in any single thing you put on. I gained WAYYY more confidence to go out and have a good time. I use to have man boobs and flappy arms which looked terrible in any shirt I put on, now I have a flat chest and toned arms love wearing shirts and jerseys everyday. It’s actually kinda crazy, you don’t have to worry about your belly being outlined in a tight shirt or whether ur pants look flabby. When you slim down, no matter what position you’re in you will look good. I went from. 240 to 190 in 4 months. Push yourself and use that as motivation!

No amount of excercise can help you to lose weight if you dont modify your diet. Theres thousands of studies on metabolism, metabolic rate and excercise that have proven that. Excercise HELPS, but a healthy diet its about 80% of the work.
Xeino actually, no, sugar is not the main cause of obesity, it's sugar AND fat. Trans fat is very unnatural and was tested, it turns out that nobody should eat trans fat at all. Sugars are natural, it just depends if you work it off. Natural fat is good for you, fried fats are not. Fried fats are the reason for obesity, as people don't normally work it off. You need natural fat, not fried fats. Learn your facts before preaching that I'm a dumbass, it made you look quite stupid. Also, they shouldn't eat bread? Bread doesn't even have sugar!
Xeino shit bread does have sugar. Though you did say that sugar is the main cause of obesity, which isn't true. Fat and sugar causes it, and fat is the main problemo.
Xeino of course I know what they are, dumbass. I just didn't know that sugar was a component. It was a simple mistake. You still don't have much argument at all, what did you say at first? Something unrelated to my original comment, something that you just assumed? Yeah, I won this the moment you commented because you said what I was implying, and even then it was incorrect. Unless you have a valid argument to give to me, this argument is pretty much settled.
Xeino you are literally straying from the original topic because you don't have a proper argument. Nice try, you're the insecure one here. Do me a favor and actually say a proper argument or don't comment at all. It's clear who the winner is. Prove me wrong if you can say something smart or something that is not assumed for once.
Keeping a strict diary of the food they eat everyday...REALLY! This is a recipe for mental health disaster. Eliminating all fats is also a bad idea. When they leave the camp they may either succeed in a healthy way, become anorexic, obsess over food, or given into eating fatty foods that will balloon their weight because they have been denied fat for over a year. I like the idea of this school but I think tweeks need to be made.
carmay3600 How? It's good to keep track of what you eat if you're trying to lose or gain weight. It's helped me lose 29 pounds and I plan to lose 50 more so I can be healthier.
Liz Mowrey You need some healthy fats in your diet. Going without fats at all doesn't teach them how to manage their diet outside the camp, since they may want to binge on fatty foods. They need to learn about nutrition, not just to avoid fats completely. A diary is a good idea, as long as it's not obsessive, because that could encourage eating disorders like anorexia.
You are so right. They'll either put it on or go anorexic . its bad got their mental health. To quote the video ' I'm petrified to gain, even like, five pounds' . that's depressing.
I love keeping a food diary (and theirs really isn't at all strict). It's a good habit, not any kind of obsession. If I go a little over my calorie range for one meal, it just reminds me to be a little better for the next one. Though I do agree about the elimination of all fats. It's also worth mentioning that to get the weights these kids were at, they may not have been the pinnacle of mental health to begin with. There's definitely a balance that has to be found on both sides of that equation.
I think “fat camps” focus should be focused more on education around nutrition, the importance of exercise, how to read nutritional info, and eating disorders. Even though I have a healthy BMI, I’m totally down to go to camp to promote a healthy lifestyle not just physically but mentally.
The cities have got to start making more places for kids to go outside even if it's just a basketball court, they also need to have more sidewalks so that people can go somewhere.
its really not easier said than done. if you dont have the self control to not eat copious amounts of unhealthy foods on a regular basis there is absolutely no hope for you when it comes to you keeping the weight off when you leave this delusional, overpriced place of nonsense.

Kenia Liz I imagine most of the money comes from them taking care of your child.

Mountain West Highways 26 pounds in 8 months really isn’t a lot...
Over the years loading packages every day takes a toll on the back. My grandpa did that and he also strained a tendon his arm.
Mountain West Highways They're kids.
But there is research that shows if most of your daily calories are carbs you will gain weight much easier.

staff to teach, clean, cook, be on campus 24/7, wash clothes, train the kids?

*****
I would just take dairy out, it's no good for you, i don't think i've ever felt so good since taking it out my diet.
My niece is pre diabetic at age 6 because my brother is a lazy (post-lap-band) person who sits at the computer and goes through a whole carton of ice cream in two days. I understand what you mean! :)
0g of fat???? Everyone needs fat in their diet. It's the source of the fat that needs to be considered.
And the type of fat. Trans fat should be avoided.
Emily Tryhorn yeah but they have A LOT of fat stored up in there bodies so thy don't need to intake more
Emily Tryhorn you already have fat in your stomatch...
Still though it's unhealthy not to eat fat. Your body needs it
You NEED certain fats to help your body absorb nutrients and also function properly.
Feel so bad for that poor girl. I was 280lbs at my heaviest (obviously I’ve lost a lot of weight) so I understand how brutal kids can be when you’re overweight. 😔
Least they are trying to better themselves ! Good for them 👏🏼💪🏼
Homers worst nightmare
Lmao
Peter's worst nightmare
Z3r0 joe Swanson’s nightmare
So its a fat camp like in Family Guy
Hitchin A' Ride and South Park
Hitchin A' Ride guy at 1:00 kinda sounds like chris
You got that right
Hhhhh yeah
Hitchin A' Ride thats mest up
I want to go to this school so bad I am 14 and weigh 280 pounds I’m so depressed I’ve been morbidly obese my whole life and I’m sick of it 😩
Hey! If your looking for a workout buddy I’m open lol I feel it’s very important to help uplift each other so it would be great to share my journey (ik I sound weird 😂)
Their main goal should just be about being healthy and eating right, not just focusing on loosing weight.
The person who organized this is probly not even certifies in nutrition or health and just follows dad diets on pinterest...
Is the Dad Diet the one where, every time you say you're hungry, you just get told "Hi Hungry, I'm Dad".
AHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA
Most peraonal trainers are not dietitians. We have knowledge and some have extreme knowledge. But some specify in different areas. I work best with people in their 40s that aren't even fat and just trying to keep in shape as they're aging. So I do functional movements and calisthenics. At the same time.... I feel this what they need too. But I can't deal with these types. I feel you need to have good supportive skills and a bunch of patients.
Many people take *dad diets* to get skinny, or “healthy.” These *dad diets* usually aren’t good for the body. Yes, I agree with you.
@@elly8353 OMG THIS IS THE PERFECT RESPONSE TO A RETARTED COMMENT
“I’m petrified of even gaining 5 pounds” I hope this girl stays healthy and that she doesn’t develop anorexia
I swear if it wasn’t 1 am I would be frantically doing push-ups
Ya same 👀
It's been a fucking year move already
Every time I bought clothes and I looked terrible in them, I would always blame the clothes rather than my own body, then keep buying new clothes and would still look terrible and just waste money but then I took action and lost weight worked out and got in shape and now I feel like I look good in anything.
So they just make them write everything they eat and won't let them talk to their family.Sounds healthy.
Just let them die from obesity then!
@Abhishek Singh You know what will kill them earlier? Suicidal thoughts and attempts. (I know what I'm talking about. Experience) These are 12 year old kids. It's not good to not be allowed to talk with your family. They are creating mental problems while "helping them".
@@AbhishekSingh-pp1ks Your heartless! You think people should die because of their weight.
Yup ima eat more sand and forget calling my parents I eat da sand
@@madisonbarkley9199 Completely missing Abhishek's point. He was saying that if they DONT go to this camp they could die naturally of obesity, therefore the camp is much healthier than not going. He DOES NOT want people to die because of their weight, which is why he supports the camp.
"I'm petrified of gaining even like 5 pounds"
yep. sounds like a healthy mindset.
I understand that being obese ain't good for you but c'mon these are kids have them lose weight in a more healthy way jeez...
Anyone trying to lose weight and get better is gonna have those thoughts
Is no one gonna talk about how good there food is
I’m not so skinny myself, but I’m definitely not overweight. I just feel bad for these teens because I know what it feels like to deal with being a bit heavier than other kids at that age.
Solution: Find a sport you like to do when you're a kid.
For me it's horse back riding and when I was younger I also did soccer, field hockey, etc.Plus I went vegetarian then vegan.
ScarsFromTomorrow I do horse back riding also and I never really was overweight but I think it helps me not get fat.
ScarsFromTomorrow The thing is not everyone is taught to be active. Not everyone likes sports.
I was never taught how to be healthy, I have to teach myself that.
ScarsFromTomorrow I would love to do a sport but i am 12 and don't know anything about a sport and I don't want to be embarrassed about that and I am kinda lazy not gonna lie but I want to so bad
+Chelsy McAwesome I'm 10 and I know almost NOTHING about common sports. (eg. football, soccer) I play lacrosse. As someone who is 140 lbs at 10 (I was 180 when I was 9) i'm surprisingly athletic. I run 9 mph (I did 27 mile long laps in 3 hours) and I go outside a lot. You don't need to exercise, just play a sport. I'm also pretty lazy though! :)
No amount of excercise can help you to lose weight if you dont modify your diet. Theres thousands of studies on metabolism, metabolic rate and excercise that have proven that. Excercise HELPS, but a healthy diet its about 80% of the work.
Sugar makes you fat, not fat!!!! If they stopped serving ketchup with every meal it would probably help more
You are a fucking dumbass.
I'm 12 92 pounds I'm very thankful
b e a c h y s u b l i m i n a l s I’m 70 pounds am I obese ?
You smart girl
He lost 15 pounds in a week! I needa go there!!!
I would take excellent care. I am so proud!
The cities have got to start making more places for kids to go outside even if it's just a basketball court, they also need to have more sidewalks so that people can go somewhere.
If you live anywhere near Metairie, Lafreniere Park is awesome. I'm lucky it's within walking distance from where live.
karmagrl76 Hey I live in Chalmette! What a small world
Also need to have less pedos and kidnappers that is what caused the issue in the first place kids used to be outside all day
3:44 she eats sand??
Verena T lol
Verena T sandwich (s)and chips maybe?
Hahaha probably a sandwich
.....got7.....
Bts?.... No...ok more for me 😂😉
Good for these kids one step closer to being happy and healthy

That is *not* how you do push ups!! You will get injured doing that. Arms should be parallel to the ground and keep elbows tuck in.
for reals, that was terrible also look forwards to prevent that wierd neck thing
Actually, that’s for injured people, I do it in physical therapy with my shoulder (I have a dented bone)
I do it with face to the floor, is that unhealthy?
Ok get out of my recommended list now?
Jared Giles you can choose the "I don't want this shit here" option ya'know
There trying to tell us something 😂
You need good oils/fats.
Avoid sugar/wheat.
New Notification No you dont need to avoid jack shit. Eat less calories run and lift and you'll lose fat easy
You need to avoid meat/dairy
U do NOT avoid wheat unless u have a medical condition to. Wheat is a crucial part of the human body’s digestive system
@@Ama40401 Dairy's good for you it helps your bones.
Mhm...sand has all of that no wonder she eating sand I need da sand now
I need to get this. In my stocking. For Christmas
Well done Michael 👍 good job.

Bevine Muntwari Right, it would be a hell of a lot cheaper that 50 fucking k a year
Easier said than done
Bevine Muntwari all the big boys have to do is play football duh
No enemies what?? That makes no sense at all
its really not easier said than done. if you dont have the self control to not eat copious amounts of unhealthy foods on a regular basis there is absolutely no hope for you when it comes to you keeping the weight off when you leave this delusional, overpriced place of nonsense.
This camp is making food an unhealthy idea to these kids.
123rockfan I went to this camp, and it really doesn't. That's why there so much counseling and such. They want to make sure nothing bad is going on
This is going to lead to an eating disorder. I have two and it’s a daily struggle. When that girl said she was afraid of even gaining 5 pounds, my heart dropped.
i would hate it but love it at the same time
Some people can't help gaining pounds
For me I'm skinny I get bullied for being skinny and I've tried everything and I can't gain a pound
I'm sorry.Just do whatever makes you feel good
