- I get a lot of questions about selecting a fishing kayak at all levels, so I decided that I should do a video that covered the levels of fishing kayaks and what to look for in each.

Hey Y’all, I have an updated version of this video. Please check it out here: czcams.com/video/JZ8o-wAppjo/video.html
I just bought a pelican catch 100, waiting for it to be delivered on the 13th, and super stoked based on the reviews and CZcams videos I’ve discovered.
Watch how hard you strap it down , do not try to retighten if it loosens a bit.
Protect that seem .
I just got the riot enduro 12 angler kayak can't wait till it comes in I prefer sit ins vs sit ins because the sit in you stay a bit dryer and I prefer the lines of a sit in
Great video! I'm happy with my first kayak which is the Ascend D10T. A little heavy but very sturdy and extremely stable!
Chad,
Great rundown with all three categories, and you added that beast at the end, the #Titan is almost like a push skiff
I’m looking to get started in kayak bass fishing. This was helpful. Thank you
I did 2 weeks of research before I made my final choice: FeelFree Lure 11.5. The wheel in the keel, the seat and the future release of the overdrive sold me. Great standing kayak. I am coming from a very sedentary computer job with back issues but physical therapy has cured my ills. I really love my choice and it fits what I wanted. No one kayak fills the bill for everyone and I respect all kayak builders. Go to a local dealer and try your choices on a paddle day, I did and then made my purchase. Happy Fishing! Thanks Chad for your informative info.
Thanks for all the great information. My adult sons are into kayak fishing. I’m 60 and a lady and thinking of taking this up myself. I think I’ll start small and work up. Thanks again.
I started with a high end kayak for my first fishing yak. A Hobie PA14 and I love it. I narrowed my search down to 3 yaks, the Jackson Big Rig, Vibe Sea Ghost and the Hobie. The mirage drive is what stood out for me, hands free fishing. Mine is a 2016 so I don’t have the reverse feature which came out on the 2017 models. Expensive but worth every dollar. 👍
Great timing on this video for me, thanks. I really want a kayak next spring, but haven't even really known how to start shopping.
I am really enjoying your videos, I found your channel yesterday. I am up in Clarksville, running a Walmart kayak that I got for Christmas. Your videos definitely give me ideas to think about when I outgrow this boat I have now.
One thing I've noticed, especially on the lower end, entry level boats, is that the weight limit's are kind of low... I'm 6 ft, 280, and none of the lower end 10 ft boats were gonna handle it. The Tamarak for example is 275 lb's, and they're pretty serious about that.. un-usable - Unstable with my weight. Just an observation, but not too many of the video's I see going over features and goodies mention the Weight Capacity. Kind of a Big Deal in my Humble Opinion.
It's so hard to get people to understand there is a huge difference in "Cheap" and "Inexpensive" in everything you can purchase and knowing that difference makes ones life so much easier in the long run, you are one of the first I've heard to point that out, I was starting to feel like I was all alone in that debate.
Also people need to learn the difference in "Rebuilt" and "Refurbished" but that's another argument.
Love my Jackson Kilroy, many great features, I personally prefer sit in but it has a high/low removable seat which actually can be used as a beach chair as well. Great info I am in process of watching your videos.
I purchased the Pescador 12 and let me say, best boat thus far I have bought. Saving to purchase something better, Thanks for these types of Vids
Well done Chad. I'm getting into the Kayak Fishing World this Spring (2020) and would love to continue Fly Fishing from a boat. The information you presented was very helpful in my decision to which craft to purchase. Thank you for a great Video.
Awesome info as always! Your videos are really informative. Got an Ascend 10t. Pretty solid kayak with some good features.
Great video, Chad. You did a nice job explaining the features of the yaks.
Thanks!
in other words you aren't going to advert any cheap kayaks because you don';t make enough from adverts ... how very genuine of you sir
I've set my sights on an Old Town sportsman 120 with a Minn kota motor. I'm 50 years old and I really want a boat, but trying to put a boat in and out by myself is not the easiest of things and with a kayak I can do it with ease.
Very informative- THANKS--- 82 in a couple of months, had to give up off shore fishing an find my new pontoon wont get as shallow as I would like, maybe a Kayak is the answer but wonder about stability and getting in an out of the boat, guess your idea of trying before buying is a great option thanks again good presentation.
Great video man I'm always wanting to educate myself further on kayak fishing
Great video, thank you for explaining the models. Love the wilderness radar.
Great info I started with a Lifetime SOT 8' for about $200 and loved everything about kayak fishing except the painful back that had me suffering every night. I tried all kinds of pillows and seat modifications with no real success, so about 3 months ago I saved up a grand and got the Feel Free Lure 10 with the Gravity seat. Needless to say I can spend a full day on it and want more. Thank you Chad for being a huge influence with my new found love. Sorry wife. But she is understanding. I am well blessed.
Thanks Chad. Exactly what i've been thinking about lately. Very helpful video.
Thank you for this video, it helps me out a lot.
Nice breakdown💯💪👊LET'S GO!!! Keep up the great AWESOMENESS!!!
A friend has a Pescador paddle series, another a Hobie Mirage pedal drive, and I recently got a Old Town Predator PDL. Each of us have been pretty happy with our kayaks and love getting them out on the water. I can personally say of the kayaks I have been around so far, I am really happy with my Old Town Predator and would highly recommend it.
Best kayak vid for newbies EVER!!
I wish the guys started earlier with Hook1 on Drakes Creek. I lived in H'ville on the lake for many years. Moved back to Virginia and got into the Kayak fishing thing and love it. When I visit Hendersonville I always stop in. Great staff and inventory.
Good video. I’m looking into getting a kayak here soon. Lots of information. Thanks.
Great vid normally when i am in experienced with a product but want it i will run through review vids on the best type of item i want then once i find the right type of item i then go through more reviews on that particular item to make sure it is something i want to have.
Hey Chad: As I watched/listened to you progressively showing/explaining the four levels in this one video, I have to say you are doing a REAL SERVICE for about-to-be first time buyers. There was not one word of misleading or controversial information. I say this with the benefit of hindsight, as I have been kayak fishing for 8 years already and absorbing everything possible about the sport.
First yak I bought was a used Perception Pescador Pro 10. Super good purchase for around 500.
I just got a Perception Pescador Pilot at the beginning of the year (2018) and am loving it and the future fun it promises.
Very good information and comparison based on your experience! Thanks!
Great video, thanks and happy fishing!
GREAT JOB Chad! Thank you so much! Extremely good information with each model explained with just the right amount of info put in a way which is very easy to understand!! Keep up he good work!
Well explained information and video. You really take your time and explain your knowledge to help us new Ack'ers. Keep up the good work!!
You could always recommend to those who can't afford a new kayak to look into a pre owned one. There are tons of them for sale. You can get an "advanced" kayak for a real good price. Of course all your sponsors would probably frown on that, but if the goal is to help folks out, that's the best advice. Great video as usual. Very informative and helpful.
Strongly recommend that folks also consider the Feelfree Lure series. I had an ATAK 140, which was no slouch and a fishing machine, but for the money, and what you get (Gravity seat, wheel in the keel, solid handles, electronics pod, etc etc etc) they are DEFINITELY worth a look!
Good information. Appreciate you and your channel.
Good advice! I would add that you should start by buying an inexpensive kayak for your first one. Make sure kayak fishing is for you. Learn how to mod your kayak on your first one, less risk dollar-wise. Then, after a season or two of learning what you do and don't like/need, drop some more serious coin on your second kayak.
Very informative video. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!
Great explanation....honest and straightforward....
I'm really glad I went for the top of the line. I got the Slayer max 12.5 absolutely love it! I got the copperhead color!
Thanks for the video and sharing your knowledge
Best breakdown video to date- nice job
Chad, this is a great help. I have the fishing fever and am excited to begin kayak fishing. I’m a big guy at 6’3” 320 and well into my 50’s. I’m saving for the Titan because of the room, stability and low cost to eventually motorized. I’m eating up your videos and Fluke Master. Thank you and keep them coming. Oh, and I will be joining KBFA.
Did u buy the Titian
Great stuff Chad! great examples showing why the price difference I there for the newbies. Have you done a video on the install process for some of the after market accessories like the power pole micro or the torquedo? What about adding lights for night fishing?
I am hoping to upgrade from pescador 10 either this year or next (bonafide, nucanoe or wilderness on top of list )Pescador 10 is an awesome stater fishing caught a lot of fish in it last summer. Great video Chad! Thanks again 👍
Man, I've been thinking about getting into kayak fishing because I can't afford a boat but I enjoy fishing. Your videos helps so much. You definitely earned a subscriber from me.
Do it, man . I got a cheap cheap sun dolphin Aruba ss, which is horrible, but it made my fishing and experience so much better .
So many choices out there the outlaw 11.6 is so stable
Got a perception pilot 12.0 a year ago absolutely love it no issues at all
Thank you I appreciate all the information
Very informative vid thanks Chad!
Very informative video. Thank you!!
Great informative video! Thank you.
Very good video Chad its just well covered.
Brilliant video Chad, thank you. I learnt some valuable information.
The best video I've seen . Your very knowledgeable
Based on your presentation in this video. I ended up purchasing ATAK 120. Love it!
It’s still a great kayak
Very informative. Great job!
From all the research i did i was looking for a kayak to fish from and wanted the most stable kayak i could find as well with multiple ways to rigg it so that i could have the option to make it into the way i would want it I chose the 3 Waters Big Fish 105 built by feel free. This kayak does not come with a rutter but is rutter ready with pre drilled holes for easy assembly. I got mine in a package deal so the rutter will be assembled before it was shipped.
I started with a heritage 10’ and saved 3years and bought a wilderness 135 pedal. It was fast but I did have to buy rod holders and other stuff but it did not work good in salt water flats and oyster beds. I had to raise the prop and paddle, also the grass would get around the prop. I sold it and bought a hobie outback for what I sold it and did not have to upgrade or change anything with it. It is a great kayak in shallow salt water and in flats where there is a lot of grass. I have no regrets. I had as much in the wilderness money wise as what the hobie was but it the best when in water on lakes it was probably better suited for it but not in the shallow oyster beds or flats. I was glad I started with a paddle and learned with it first.
Bought my Feel Free Lure 11.5 at Hook1 Hendersonville. Great staff and support team! Buy a Railblaza C-tug to get the rigs to and from the water. It's saving wear and tear on my old back. :)
Awesome vid with great advice!
The way I learned this same concept in school is that low grade is acceptable, while low quality is not. Great vid!
Thank you ! Looked with interest!
Great info Chad ...Liked that video..
Great honest video. All stated at a good pace too,
Great video. Thanks for the insight!
Im currently in a Feel Free Lure 11.5 but think I am going to swithch to the Native 12 footer. Good video
the Big Fish 105 is a all around kayak and the starting price is $800 for the 10ft 6 inch kayak they also make a 120 thats 12ft for $999. The bigger one offers a bit more speed but wanted something easier to haul. This kayak was built for stability and has a ton of features u would find in the higher classes of kayaks. The rutter ready, the seat, the tracks, the ability to stand with out the fear of flipping it, and this kayak has features in the middle where there is a storage box that can be lifted out and there is a hole in the kayak where u can mount a trolling motor or u can mount a fish finder and the storage box is pre drilled for wiring with the fish finder. This kayak is slow but to me stability is more important cause im a fisherman i dont want to have to worry about the stability when reeling in a fish. now it can still flip but would have to do something pretty dumb to make it flip like positioning your body out side of the kayak or something. This kayak is the one i chose for the rigging options, and the price, and the stability it offers. As u can see in my post i have did my research i have yet to receive this kayak it still needs to be shipped.
My dad has this exact kayak(big fish 105) and he loves it. He has fished rivers and lakes and it works great. The price point is also amazing for everything that it is. I'm actually looking at picking one up for myself.
Good evening Mr. Chad Hoover I found this video VERY INFORMATIVE as well as INTRIGING!:-) I have been contenplating on purchasing one of these kayak's here in the near future. I want to expand my PASSION of FISHING to NEW HORZIONS! You've given me a Desire to Fullfill my greatest Exespectation in Fishing Experinence! Thank you for REKINDLING my PASSION of FISHING!:-) GOD BLESS U and YOUR FAMILY! :-) Sincerely, Mr. CARL J. GWIZDALA.
Really good information. Thanks.
I am really looking and leaning at buying a Native Titan 12.5 due to stability and me being a bigger guy. I saw one of your videos with you and another dude in the slayers and they look awesome as well. Greg Blanchard's channel really made me want a pedal drive kayak.
It’s a great boat from all I can see and the limited time that I spent pedaling it.
Haven’t gotten to spend a day fishing in it yet though
Hello! I love your videos. I seen a few. I was wondering if you could help me out with picking the best seat for a kayak. I want to invest in a good seat because it's a seat that I will be spending hours in. What do you recommend??? Thank you!
A lot of good information in this older video. Thank you.
Thanks for the video Chad this was helpful
Great information, thanks for sharing.
Great info. Much obliged, Chad!
This man feels like hes going to be my guide for my kayak fishing quest
Thanks! I hope that I can help
@@ChadHooverFishing Just keep up the great content, I havent seen anyone around me do it so your channel definitely helps me and my friend get in the water
Aldrig Sige thanks brother and good luck with your pursuit. It’s going to be worth it
Good advice!
Anyone watching should also consider, there are numerous models in between the options Chad mentioned.
1. Be careful buying a "budget kayak" and adding on a pile of options/money to make a better kayak.
There's no ROI, Return On Investment
2. Decide how you'll use it, and access to available water resources.
3. Physical ability!
All those "accessories" add weight! That Titan is going to take some effort to keep moving! Get caught in some windy conditions...I probably would be stuck...or going backwards!
Yes there are, especially since this video is almost four years old. I plan to update it very soon. Great points!!
I know you've seen the numbers of new kayakers out this year.
And all those hats!
the first kayak was very basic but for a starter is great, fishing in kayak is for me the best and I try alot of plataforms
Old town predator 13 has treated me very well for my first kayak
It's odd how a lot of kayak reviews seem to forget what would be obvious choices otherwise.

I got a lifetime teton angler 100 for my first fishing kayak. Picked it up on sale for 300 bucks. For that price I have been more than pleased with it to say the least. It is very stable, as I can stand in it and fish as long as the water is not extremely choppy and the wind is not blowing like crazy. Came with rails for mounting things, 2 rod holders and a decent mesh seat that's comfortable with good back support. It's fairly fast for a 10 foot kayak and it maneuvers good. For a budget kayak it performs surprisingly good and compared to the other kayaks on the market at this price point I think it's a no brainers. I would recommend it to anyone for an entry level kayak
Great review Chad!
Confluence!! I used to work for them when they were in NC...it was a sad day when they moved!
I bought my yak in 2017 and after months comparing every fishing yak I chose a VIBE SeaGhost 110. It comes with a comfortable adjustable seat, a rudder, a replaceable rear keel and paddle and the 2022 version is still only around $1400, I paid $825 for mine in 2017 so they haven't gone up too much. IMHO it's the best bang for the buck.
Very well done
Very informative
Thanks for your time
When is the best time to buy a kayak
You probably heard that the patent on the Hobie drive system expired so that platform will be available for others to replicate
What's your thoughts on their drive system as opposed to a prop ?
Have an Old Town 120 PDL salty. It rocks on the lake in high winds since a it may designed for the ocean.
Used some Jackson Topwaters too and they are good, but I like the pedals from Old Town.
Wound up with an Ascend 128x, not because it was my first choice but because it was the only kayak in my price range that was available. It’s not a bad kayak.
I just bought an Ascend 128x with Yak Power. I looked high and low in New Mexico for a really good quality SOT fishing kayak. I have to say, I got lots of strange looks buying the Ascend. But it was the highest quality fishing kayak that I could find in stock pretty much anywhere in the state. I saw two Hobies that were close to $4k each and that’s way beyond my current budget. But it only took one trip in my Lifetime Tamarack Angler 100 to realize that it was terribly under sized for me to consider fishing on it. If I want to just play around in the water and get wet, it’s fine. But the Ascend 128x is far more suited to my 6’, 210 lbs body plus fishing gear and trolling motor/battery.
Thank you very much for this informative video.
Great video!
I have money set aside and was going to buy an entry-level kayak. However, the more research I did the more it made sense to go with a peddle not a paddle kayak. Number 1 I'm 6'4 no way would I be able to stand in a beginner kayak. Number 2 I want something that's going to last for a long time. I've watched countless videos on numerous styles brand paddle peddle and trollin motor propelled kayaks. Unfortunately I won't be able to try before I buy but I think ill absolutely love being able to be one with nature. Thanks Mr. Hoover.
Yessir. Check out some local kayak fishing groups and online classifieds and see if you can find one that you can try before you buy
@@ChadHooverFishing I live in memphis we don't have alot of kayak groups that I can find. I found some through Google but they are on Facebook and I don't have social media and refuse to get it.
thanks that was awsome information
I learned so much. Thank you.
Would b a dream come true to own a titan. Great video 🤙🏻
