  • In this video, I try to find where my Mercruiser Alpha One Gen 2 outdrive is leaking. I find a pinched o ring underneath the lower shift shaft housing. The housing is updated to a newer version now. The newer version has a different speedometer hose attachment.

    thanks for saving us from learning the hard way. This video also helped me confirm the shift shaft is supposed to be straight and not bent. Mine has a slight kink in it that i'm pretty sure was making it leak.

    Great informative video for my problem! I removed the outdrive and forgot to have the shifter in forward! May have bent the shift rod as the unit didn’t come out easily! Consequently, when put back together, shifting was extremely difficult, at best! Pretty sure I can do this myself! Thanks!

      @@605BOLT I believe the seal that you replaced in this video is the one that is also leaking on mine. I have gear oil leaking out the same holes that you mentioned. But I also ordered the upper gear case seals aswell because I thought if I'm going to have the drive apart I mayswell replace all the seals. Did you also do the upper gear case on yours? I found a video on it but it's very vague. I didn't see that you had a video on it either.

    When you put the shift shaft and the assembly back together. And while the outdrive was still on the bench did you try to rotate the prop shaft. Did the shift shaft move to Neutral? I am having this issue and I dont know if it is normal behavior.

    • @605BOLT
      @605BOLT  Před 27 dny +1

      Yes you can shift it and make it engage like the boat would. But you need to rotate the input shaft. Not the prop. Meaning your hand has to be like the engine and turn the splines on the input shaft.

    On my alpha 1 gen 2 I broke off the plastic speedo part on the shift shaft housing when trying to screw it out. 26 year old plastic will do that. I have to do this EXACT thing. I'm worried about getting the lower back on correctly tho.

    • @605BOLT
      @605BOLT  Před 3 lety +1

      Nice. Well I'm not happy your speedo broke haha. But I hope u find this video helpful. Getting the lower on wasn't too tough. Just gotta be gentle with it so you don't disturb any of the seals. Good luck and let me know how you turn out!

    @jaredthompson1522 Před rokem

    Maybe you can help me. My lower is leaking. Bellows and hoses get covered in a white, milky substance after it’s been ran. Had the mechanic pressure test it and it passed. Also passed a small vacuum test. Any idea?

    • @605BOLT
      @605BOLT  Před rokem

      Could have just been the little o ring that goes between the upper and lower halves of the outdrive maybe. There is a tiny o ring that allows oil to go between the two portions. But it sounds like you're following a good process to diagnose.

    Nice video! When replacing mine, the metal shifter bar that goes down into the gear that moves the propeller goes in slightly but not all the way to seat properly. Any idea what it may be? Thank you

      @605BOLT  Před 2 lety +1

      Dang. I can't say for sure. I was able to look down in there but like I said in the video, be careful not to be too rowdy because it the parts can shift with that rod out. Is the spline all cleaned out and free from damage?

      @ej.Sal14 Před 2 lety

    Hay I’m having a problem with my shift shaft sinking in to the lower, what holds it up? I see the clip on the bottom but what keeps it up?

    • @605BOLT
      @605BOLT  Před rokem +1

      It needs to be engaged with the splines in the shift crank. Beyond that, the little rubber ring that is above the sealing housing is the only thing that keeps it held up.

    @stick9758 Před 2 lety

    What was the initial problem?

    • @605BOLT
      @605BOLT  Před 2 lety +1

      The initial problem was I drained the fluid from the outdrive and found that the drive oil had water mixed into it. Also the engine had problems and the gimbal ring was worn out. So the whole boat was pretty worn out but the contaminated oil is why I replaced this specific seal. One of the o rings was pinched and that was causing the cross contamination.

  • @jetboy001
