Also, I'm not sure it's great for a doctor to be talking about gas and bloating in such terms (disgusting, embarrassing). These issues can have origins other than too much fiber, and no one should feel ashamed or too embarrassed to visit their doctor.
I found this problematic too, you are a doctor you shouldn't be ashamed to talk about these things. And I actually think this was more of an act to try to be seem relatable 😬
Yes! I was severely under eating and losing weight rapidly on a vegan diet due to IBS/ severe bloating. I would prefer if it wasn’t talked about like it’s shameful, ugh.
About bees, bees make honey for their hive- its still exploits the bees to take their honey from them.
Just like cows milk is for baby calfs, honey is for the bees when there are no longer any flowers 🌸 🐝
You're right here as I would never tell my patients to be embarrassed to share such symptoms with me. Sharing them with millions of people I became somewhat shy and that's something I could definitely work on. Always important to remember that everything you share with your doctor is kept confidential and will NEVER leave the room unless authorized by you.
Hello, love your channel. Can you check out Rachel Ama? Keep up the good work spreading a balanced message.
Thank you for your honest review! Very much appreciate your channel and have watched videos in the past with much enjoyment. The idea of being reasonable with folks who are not vegan is key to reducing meat consumption. Keep up the great work and I will continue improving and learning!
My two favourite youtubers, wow
Yay, two reasonable and intelligent people that are open to learn and constructive criticism. This is the content I like to watch.
A very diplomatic and professional man.

Thank you for addressing the 'all or nothing'..I was talking to a vegan about this in work because I'm just transitioning now after a year vegetarian, I said I need to give up chocolate or something and she was like 'you can be vegan except for chocolate then'. It made me feel a lot better because I'm 95% vegan except for odd bits like garlic dip, chocolate etc., when I dont have a vegan alternative. Love your channel so glad I came across it :D
There's many brands that do vegan chocolate bars! Unless milk chocolate is your thing, then no.
There is vegan milk chocolate and garlic dip. Try the one from Trader Joe’s. The have a vegan garlic dip. Also Whole Foods have a isle of chocolate and you’ll find a milk (coconut, soy, almond etc..) alternative.
@@roxywyndham I'm not in America I do drink several plant milks, I only eat these when theres no vegan alternatives e.g. out and about or at a friends house. Thanks for the suggestions though !
I do the same as you! I actually used to be fully vegan, but I felt too restricted. Now I'm still like 95% vegan but I feel like I'm free to eat whatever I want. I don't think Americans necessarily know that there aren't that many vegan substitutes in other countries. Like where I live there is one brand of vegan milk chocolate which is quite hard to come by, really expensive, and tastes terrible.
@@idahval I'm in Haiti... Vegetarian could fly, vegan? You'll either starve or have serious deficiencies, and the price of supplements imported from the US is enough to feed your whole family for a week... So yeah, there are vegans but they are most likely upper middle class...
ive been vegan for almost four years & i can tell you the only thing that made it easy was doing it SLOWLY. i was vegetarian for about four years before i started transitioning to vegan, and my transition to vegan was slow. my method was - for two weeks i ate vegan one day a week, and then the following two weeks i increased it to two days a week, then the two weeks after that i increased it to three days a week and so on with the goal of being fully vegan by that new years. it's the only new year resolution ive ever stuck with hahaha. but really the point is, just relax and take it slow and take the pressure of yourself 🖤
Awesome to hear you achieved what you want! Taking time to explore and get better at new things - when possible - can be wise.
Great to hear and good for you. I was vegetarian for two years and when I found out about the suffering, I went vegan overnight. It's been nine years since that day.
I happened to do something similar. My goal was not originally to go vegan, however after being pescatarian for a few months I got some pet fish. (My family still laughs about this and tries to tell me it's different to eat salmon than my pets.) After that I couldn't eat fish anymore. I was then vegetarian. I took out dairy for my health because I thought it would help. It didn't do much but after being dairy free for a while I began to hate the taste of regular milk. Then I watched food Inc and cut eggs.
I completely agree with your point about relaxing and taking it slow. Not everyone can jump in cold turkey. You still may have to wean yourself off things that you just love. It takes time. It's not a quick fix. It's a long term lifestyle change.
i ate meat for almost every meal and going vegan overnight required almost zero effort... there is not much more to it than just stop buying animal products, and no reason to baby step it either. take out the meat, replace it with beans/lentils
@@LetsHugPotatoes Well some people can do that. However I have also seen other people who can't. Everyone is different. For me I took small steps not because I wanted to but because my ethics slowly changed until I was vegan.
Your videos were the first time I'd ever heard the term "reducitarian" and it was like someone had given me permission to *start* even if it was going to be a long journey.
Yes! It makes it less intimidating
I so support the idea of reducetarian. You have to take baby steps.
Me too. She even encouraged me to document my journey. It may seem dramatic but she changed how I see veganism completely and empowered me to begin.
@@journeywithrosie That's awesome!!
Good point. There has to be a place between an omnivore and vegan diet to get there. Personally, I didn't ever officially 'go vegan' I just decided to stop eating/using animal products and see how far I could make it and, well, it's been years and so far only bought one non-vegan item. It seems to work, and I enjoy it, so I think I'll keep going :)
Wow, finally a vegan CZcamsr who is willing to say that veganism is NOT all or nothing. Thank you!
"Go vegan except for [things you don't want to give up]" is essentially what being a reducetarian is. I think it would change the world, truly, if most people just became reducetarian, without all the hangups and policing of being vegan or vegetarian. Of course, that doesn't really call in question animal suffering and traditional farming practices, but if more people were cutting back on those, and demanding clean ethical sources when they do consume them, I think we might see local family-run farms again.
More than 80% of the food produced in my country is from small family-run farms. This is one of the reasons I don't go full vegan and I don't feel the need to (plus, I'm allergic to B12 supplements). But I did reduce a lot of my meat consumption. In my country, it's normal to eat meat twice a day (and a lot) every day. I reduced it to a couple of times a week. I still can't give up on milk and cheese because I really like them, but I haven't eaten red meat for a long while now and I only buy chicken sometimes.
@@Malenassaura personally, I buy eggs and meat from local farms where I can see the conditions they're kept. I dont object to eating them in general(its nature....) I object to the way they're treated. I'm at this middle ground where both vegans and non hate me lol.
We can't sustain the populations using only small farms, this is why factory farming is a thing in the first place. They only way you're going to be able to go back to small meat and dairy farms is if more people are vegetarian and vegan and the demand severely dwindles.
@@xtinkerbellax3 first of all, over 80% of food consumed in Brazil are produced in small farms. Brazil has over 200 million people. It can be done, especially if we promote less consumption of meats in general. We don't need to eat meat everyday.
@@xtinkerbellax3 yuh that's my exact comment bruh
Decision fatiuge may be more of a problem for Doctor Mike than for most people because if he's working as a doctor he's having to make complex high stakes decisions constantly as part of his work, which would be mentally tiring. It might not be a will power issue, it could be that adding navigating a new restrictive diet onto a mentally demanding job was just a lot of mental work.
This is a very empathetic approach/comment
This might actually be a case. There are studies which showed that food choice is a mental activity and people who are mentally overloaded have poorer food choices (the study I reckon had a choice between some form of sweets and an apple ) so it might be a factor.
Especially when you’re new to a diet (vegan or not vegan) - reading labels, checking ingredients, preparing, checking values etc is tiring!
@@jessa.4529 it's not empathetic it's the obvious truth
Something can still be obvious and empathetic?

*FARTS* -Unnatural Vegan 2019
It's so refreshing to hear your mindset about veganism. I went vegan when I was 14 and I wish I had found your videos then. I thought the only way to be healthy and vegan was to follow freelee and rawkristina and it caused me alot of stress for years. Anyway I think you're a great voice for this lifestyle.
Menopause coming in 3 2 1....
Heyo! As someone who's worked with Thrive Market a few times, I know what you mean. It can be less expensive to shop at Sprouts (for example) for certain things. I pay to renew my own membership and use it more as a matter of convenience so I can order pantry staples and some of the weird bulk vegan/health food things (like hemp hearts, as you mentioned, or nutritional yeast) that I'd usually have to pay more for at Whole Foods. Those things can simply be purchased off Amazon, but I like what the brand stands for so I support them. I think anyone who actually enjoys in-person grocery shopping and bargain-hunting might be better suited to take advantage of the free trial and then cancel. Since I'm a food blogger and spend way too much time grocery shopping already 😅 I appreciate being able to order a bunch of staples and have them come to my door every other month or so.
Lol you called me out. I am making overnight oats with almond milk (fruit to be added in the am) while watching. I did add chia seeds and I'll add PB in the morning too, though.
@Lisa Beck I actually find what I make pretty filling as is, but thank you for the suggestion
@Lisa Beck I really like it! I do have some walnuts in my cabinet so I might throw some in my oats tomorrow. ❤
I have been tracking my diet and there is nowhere near enough protein. I cannot have nutritional yeast or whatever fancy thing is in right now. Can you please recommend some vegan protein sources I can have to meet my daily requirement? I might just start having whey.
Estha Lensherr just use plant based protein powders. They are better on your tummy too! Since you are considering whey, plant based protein powders offer comparable protein content. For me, whey has always messed up my stomach and made me feel sick after, so even though I’m not vegan I still only use plant based protein powders
I make the same thing :) (but i add honey🤔)

Can you do a video on lab meat? Like how close we are, challenges facing production, etc.
I second that!
Worst food for the environment ever
@@lalalablablabla2130 How? Just curious, I haven't heard that before
@@lalalablablabla2130 Worst comment ever. The lower environmental impact is the main reason why they are researching lab grown meat.
I have deep concerns over "lab grown meat". Is it a viable option to replace natural meat? May be it is but probably not. The environmental impact would probably be significant. Think of it this way they will be pumping massive amounts of chemicals into a genetic stew forcing chemical and physical changes into something meat like. Now honestly what kind of impact do you think that would have on the environment if some of that stuff leaked into a water supply let alone what the chemicals would do to your body. Now I'm not trying to sound like I know everything about the process but this is essentially how they are growing human organ's. Granted they haven't refined the process well enough yet for it to be a viable option for organ transplantation. Isn't science amazing?
I love how you now end the video like 2/3 of the way through and then go off script
This is literally the first time I've heard a vegan say 'well don't give that up then'. It's so refreshing to see somebody have a welcoming, factual, non-gatekeepy perspective. Much more motivating. Thank you!
You are completely correct about Thrive. I had a membership for 6 months. I compared the prices to amazon and meijer and some things were cheaper but a ton wasn't. Plus, like you said, I bought way too much junk food. Seriously half my box would be bbq chips! We loved their tahini but couldn't justify the cost for that one item. As a side note, I live by the dairy you mention at the beginning of the video and people here are freaking out as if animal abuse at a farm is something new!
Vitacost is way better.
@@PapayaJoy Heck yeah. Love Vitacost. For people new to it, the key is to get on their email list and wait for their 20% off food coupon code (it comes out every few weeks). Then stock up on their wide selection of (healthy) vegan food.
Sometimes Thrive has great deals, and I like their Tuscan pepper sauce, which is good to get delivered if one is fragile and/or on the bus.
It would be interesting to get your reaction to the Kurzgesagt videos on meat consumption and the industry.
I have found a way to make legumes so it doesn't give you gas.
1.- I always use dry (raw) legumes, so they need to be in a container with water for about 12 hours before you cook them.
2.- Put the legumes in a pressure cooker with some water, but not all the water that you would normally use.
3.- Heat the water and the legumes without covering the pressure cooker with its lid.
4.- Bring the legumes to a boil and let them boil for a few minutes (15 minutes is fine).
5.- Add cold water, enough to stop the boiling.
6.- Let them boil again and close the pressure cooker.
Approximately 40 minutes later you'll have perfect, soft legumes that won't make you gassy. :)
Applying logic to Veganism one video at a time. It just makes too much sense.
You are so very appreciated, keep doing what your doing.

You should do a video response to the new Kurtzvesaft [In a Nutshell] (spelling???) video about eating meat. They also did one on eating more plant based.

My biggest issue with factory farming is how the workers are treated. There have been incidences where factory farms hire undocumented immigrants paying them low wages and not providing basic health protections. Even workers in "better" factory farms exposed their workers to harmful pathogens, and they have higher rates of illness and disease including cancer.
don't come here illegally then.
The workers ? How about the animals brutally slaughtered for your food ?

The only thing that I'll say about Thrive is they give free memberships to low income families, veterans, and teachers. As a low income, disabled, plant based, Army vet, every little bit helps! Like anywhere, it can be definitely hit or miss! Still, there are months that I would have gone hungry when the food banks in my area were tapped out, and food stamps were running low. You know how rough things can get in the Willamette Valley, though I agree that there's a lot of shilling happening. Dr. Mike didn't even mention about the free memberships for those who qualify, either. 🤔

I keep seeing Thrive everywhere and honestly I feel like vitacost is a much better deal and it doesn't require a membership. Plus they have huge sales on food all the damn time. Right now Manitoba's hemp hearts on vitacost are on sale at 10.03 for a 1lb bag. And earlier in the month they had a 20% off code for a $50 food purchase (which is easy as heck to reach considering all the tasties they sell). UnnaturalVegan is so refreshing...no whacky looney stuff
Okay I just subscribed. I watched Dr Mike's vegan video and saw this in the recommended. I like your perspective on not having to be all or nothing.
My conversion to vegan was a lot easier than most people as I've been veggie off and on for almost 2/3 of my life so I was familiar with a number of things. But there was still a bit of a learning curve and I'm still learning something almost everyday. If it was like that for me I can't imagine what it's like for someone who knows nothing about veganism.
I'm certainly gonna check out more of your videos but from what I just saw I'd like to say keep on doing what you're doing. We need more voices like yours.
You should do thrive for the free trial month just to see or compare it to iherb. So many people promote it as so affordable and It doesn't seem it really is. Iherb doesnt require a membership and I see many videos sponsored by them as well.
Would you be willing to do a video outlining the different degrees of harm caused by different industries? For example, it is my understanding is that the poultry industry does more harm than the beef industry, so if I were to reduce one source of animal harm from my lifestyle, I would think that cutting out poultry would cause less harm than cutting out beef. I am a newb to learning about all of this so I would love some direction where to research about what I can do to make the most difference.
As far as I know, beef is the most unsustainable meat, because of the resources it takes to raise a cow, and in terms of animal cruelty, the poultry industry might be worse. Reducing overall meat consumption, in my case, was the way to go...
Almonds are more unsustainable then any meat
@@lalalablablabla2130 that's not true. I would recommend reading "project drawdown", the most comprehensive guide to reversing global warming, put together by a diverse group of cientistas and researchers. From the website: "According to Project Drawdown, if all of the world’s cattle formed their own nation, they would be the planet’s third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases, so eating less meat - especially beef - is good for the planet.
But throwing away less of what we eat is an even more impactful way to reduce carbon emissions. A third of all food that we raise or grow never makes it onto our plates, and that waste accounts for around 8% of global emissions, according to Drawdown’s analysis.
But, since there is food wasted all along the supply chain, eating less meat is probably the most effective way individuals can fight climate change"
I'm gonna humbly wait for that video of you trying thrive market and teliing us "see I told you I was gonna get these junk foods that I don't need " lol 😄

Veganism is first and foremost about ethics towards animals and humans, any health benefits as a result is a bonus.
If you get into veganism for health and it makes you very sick you should leave as do the overwhelming majority of people who go vegan
lalala blablabla If you get into veganism for health, that makes you plant-based. Vegan is not a diet, it’s a moral obligation ✌🏻

LauraSuzanne totally agree.
I've compared prices of items I regularly buy from thrive market vs Amazon (because a lot of it is hard to find near me) and thrive markets prices are 9:10 so much better. And it's not at all "mostly junk food", there are all kinds of food items, you can search by allergens, diets, packaging types, ethical options, etc. They also do your choice for free item with purchases over $49 (you then get free shipping as well) and there are items that randomly have a rebait on top of discounts. There are also housewares/ cosmetics/ non food items.

I will say in defense for Mike since we were both in the MIT program together: MIT SUCKED at providing good, hearty vegan options for us. And this is coming from someone who is vegan, and not a "for 30 days one" like Mike did. All they gave was fruit, a cereal option, and almond milk. That was IT for breakfast. And then it was the same with lunch- salad bar, salad bar, salad bar with just... veg. And our dinner options were practically zilch except for one day when we actually were given a decent taco bar, a BBQ, and we were on our own on Monday. But other than that, that one MIT week would've been hell for trying a 30 day vegan diet, ha. It was pretty unfortunate awful timing there.
I mean, no joke- our only dinner option one night (unless we wanted to go out and spend money of course we can do that lol) was a wrap with pieces of lettuce, green pepper, and cucumber. LITERALLY THAT WAS IT, hahaha. Not even a hummus spread on it. Oof.

Hi Swayze, I've been vegan for 1 1/2 years, but I still don't know if I want to consume honey or not. I can't find a lot of information about it, but just in case honey production is bad for bees, I've been avoiding it. What do you know about this topic and what is your stand on this?

I've been a flexitarian for years now and slowly growing more and more towards veganism, but like you said cravings make it harder to make the change permanently but maintaining a healthy vegan diet without wheat (which I'm allergic to) makes it a lot more difficult to eat out and to eat yummy things, so I love to hear people like you say that any changes are awesome!

Would you consider addressing the recent study on "hyperprocessed food"? Googling that will bring it up. It seems like vegan food can at least sometimes be hyperprocessed, especially in terms of things like fake meat/dairy products.
How is vegan “dairy” hyperprocessed? It’s almonds or soy beans or likewise blended with water and strained. Doesn’t seem any more processed than real pasteurized dairy would be

Hey! Do you have a video on your favorite Portland vegan restaurants/places?
I somehow got a free thrive market membership and I do exactly what you said - save on the few items that are significantly cheaper (probiotics, protein powder) and just load up on the snacks/processed foods that I wouldn't typically spend money on because they're "on sale" and they're getting delivered to me...but it is a great service for someone without a car and always has to shop on bike/foot (and they give back to families in need)
I’m vegan, and beans and nightshades don’t go well with me. It’s that super sharp and painful gas. Chickpeas are ok, but bell peppers, eggplant, lots of mushroom and beans aren’t good. And don’t try to tell me I’m not used to fiber, because I can eat raw kale salads and tons of raw broccoli and raw cauliflower in one day with zero problems. Don’t “give up” things, just replace them or find something that gives you the same satisfaction or gratitude or whatever it might be.
My friend told me she can’t be vegan because she can’t give up yogurt, and I told her “just... eat plant based yogurt” and she’s like “oh. Right. I never thought of that”. I showed her that plant based yogurts taste the same 😅😂. And ya what u said is true, even if you leave in one or two products, it’s better than the all or nothing approach.
We love all people who are aware snd open minded to the vegan diet based on ethical, environmental, health, and other reasons and we love them for trying something. Just something.
I can handle nightshades & mushrooms, but I started having issues with most legumes a couple of years ago. Chickpeas digest way better for me for some reason. It's kind of annoying, but I try to vary my protein intake between chickpeas, tofu/tempeh/edamame, protein powder and mock meats.
I love most vegan substitutes but I actually find plant based yogurt to be the least satisfying. I think it tastes nothing like yogurt. More like pudding, because it doesn’t have the sour tang to it. That is actually my one thing I really still crave and cannot imagine substituting.
@@theshunnedBandersnatch I'm the same with beans (I have IBS), but chickpeas, soy and white beans like cannelini beans are fine.
@@LaurasVeganLife Yes, cannellini beans are good, as well! I like them blended to make a sour cream-esque dip for tacos and such. I wonder why some beans cause more issues than others? 🤔
Amber Rohrer I have tried literally every vegan yogurt in my grocery store and have yet to find a brand that’s even remotely comparable to dairy! Too sweet, too runny, not tangy.
Wait, my dad recommended almond milk over other non-dairy milk, and he's not even truly vegetarian. I like almond milk. So I'm a little confused. I have the opposite problem: constipation. So I need more fiber anyways. I take a chocolate laxative from Kroger: for like almost $2
It sounds like you've worked out what works for you, but the type of fibre matters too - some types might make your constipation worse and some might help relieve it
The way you communicate veganism was super helpful to me. Over a few months I got rid of every animal product (was already vegetarian for a while) except cheese. Because damn, i love cheese. Stopping cheese took a bit longer, but when I did it actually wasn't hard at all.
It is incredible how some people can do it overnight, but for me that wasn't an option, since I struggled with eating disorders in the past. Eliminating so many things I actually enjoy eating at once wouldn't have been sustainable or (mentally) healthy for me.
I wish it was a more common way to communicate veganism, and I am so happy I found your videos.
What do you think about people recommending avoiding oils in all forms to fight acne? I've seen a video from a vegan youtuber who invited these twin girls to talk about their "cure" for acne (a vegan oil-free diet). Is it healthy? I use some non-comedogenic oils for my face and they seem to work better than avoiding any type of oil whatsover. I'd think it would not help avoiding oils forever.
thanks for your unnatural perspective. helps me adjust my vegan attitude!
Great video! I love that you encourage people to do what they can!
What do you think about ethical bee keeping? Honey is the only non-vegan food i still eat, I talked to some of the bee keepers I get my honey from and they say that there are no bee deaths involved in the process and they always make sure to leave enough honey for our harsh winters. (I live in finland so we have long winters, also stricter laws than in US I suppose). I'm just curious to your views on it @_@
I've found your channel recently and watched a fair number of your back catalogue of videos.
As an omnivore looking to increase my plant based intake I'd like to praise you.
You do an amazing job of correcting misleading vegan information , (be it positive or negative towards veganism) give suggestions to help people go vegan without over pushing it and are incredibly supportive of people improving their plant based percentage of diet but not wanting to go full vegan.
Your "not all or nothing" approach makes it easier for people to improve their diet and I think the community could do with a load more people like yourself.
An updated understanding of willpower from a psych student- willpower is more static in the short term (except in circumstances of stress) and more plastic in the long term. It’s not simple enough to say willpower is a limited resource, but it is also inaccurate to say it isn’t. Having too much to deal with on an executive function level can greatly influence our ability to handle other things. A great example of this is scarcity in the poor population.
I found that when I had a membership to thrive I spent more money every month. I felt like I needed to buy from them to justify the membership and I spent more to get the free shipping🙄
I have a Thrive membership. My membership was free since I'm a student. I'm not fully vegan, but your channel has made me put in serious effort. I'm sort of 50/50 on Thrive.
Cons:
-The snacks are amazing and I'm addicted to the Biena Habanero Chickpeas.
-I dislike that they save your card information pretty much indefinitely.
-They had freebies for spending $25 and that seems to have gone away. So much more budget friendly than the 49+ and 59+.
-Some items have minimum order requirements, like 2+.
-Free shipping is at $49.
-There have been a lot of negative reviews of people not getting what they order or getting damaged goods. I've personally never had it happen.
Pros:
-The snacks are amazing and I'm addicted to the Biena Habanero Chickpeas.
-I mainly use it to get ingredients that I can't always find locally like nutritional yeast and vital wheat gluten. I don't live in a big vegan friendly city.
-The categories by diet takes out the guesswork for someone who's new to eating vegan foods and not a master of nutritional labels yet.
-You get to pick freebies for spending $49+ and $59+.
-My membership was free since I'm a student. It really helps.
-It's nice to have everything ship in one box packed with paper from one place instead of ordering from different Amazon sellers or all over the Internet packed in plastic.
For me living in Greece it goes like this:
In winter I usually eat quite a few animal products and meat along with cooked vegetables, but very little fruit.
Come spring and summer though, I eat a looooot of strawberries, and a meal that I crave for almost every single day is a huge greek salad (feta included).
So in the warm months I could go vegetarian I guess, because I eat very little meat, processed or not.
Recently I "discovered" oats and I think they are making me feel quite good so that will be interesting. I also never have bloating or gas issues with broccoli and chickpeas thankfully, which I eat a lot.
The nose bleed pressure thing really works. I use it on myself and my kids. It works great.
We have our own chickens and they're free ranged. Eggs are covered for us. We plan in the future to only use animal products that we produce.
Vitacost has about the same price on things without the membership fee.
I’ve always assumed that if you have access to a Costco it would be much better spent money on a membership there than thrive (I believe the lowest level is about the same divided up over the year). They have plenty of vegan/organic treats/junk as well as some of the best deals on produce and bulk foods like beans/rice/pasta/plant milks/nuts/seeds/oils/spices. Also added bonus is if you need to buy practically anything from garden plants to household appliances to jewelry they have great deals. They also do a lot of quality control because they often only carry one brand or a select few and they have great return policies so I usually take comfort in that, especially if I’m buying an expensive appliance. TLDR I really only think thrive would be a good option if you lived in a rural area with few choices or had little access to transportation.
I'm a big fan of the oatmeal with fruit breakfast you described lmao. I personally do just fine with that, but I often snack on a granola bar in between breakfast and lunch! It definitely just depends on the person and what makes them feel satisfied.
I have trouble eating enough on a vegan diet as well. Having allergies for nuts, seeds (I can have chia, flax, sunflower) and soy doesn't help at all. I get super full on fiber filled meals and legumes are the worst if you're full fast and have a slow digestion. (Oh and no avocado's either, most fruits are a problem as well :/ )
How in the world do I eat enough energy and protein, when I need to get it almost all through legumes and grains, without wanting to barf my meals up again?
*WHISPERS* You can get a lot of vegan snack foods at discount stores, like Grocery Outlet!
I used to buy more from vita cost for products I can’t get at the grocery store, but I prefer Thrive because of their zero waste policy. I was amazed at how small my box was for the amount of products I got compared to other online companies.
Hello, I just found your channel and I find it very interesting. I'm not vegan myself but I'm eating less meat and animal products than I was years ago, and I'm interested in helpful tips and other peoples views on the topic of veganism and vegetarianism to find out what works for me and what I can change or incorporate into my own diet.
So I do gave a question. I already knew that honey isnt considered vegan because of the beekeeping. But I've read that almonds are grown on huge plantations where bees have to be transported to to pollinate the trees. The bees wouldn't survive there naturally because of the huge amount of pesticides that are being used. Wouldn't it be logical to classify almonds as non-vegan, too, because of that? What's your opinion on that, do you consider almonds as vegan? and is there a kind of consensus among vegans about it?
I'm very curious about your answer.
Greetings from Germany
I liked this video as soon as you said “I just wanted to say farts”
Thanks for pointing out the very real difficulties of having IBS and being vegan. It is a real challenge. I would like to add though that you mention that mock meats are good protein alternatives for those that struggle with the oligosaccharides in beans, but nearly all mock meats on the market contain onions and garlic which are also large oligos triggers for people with IBS so they are oftentimes not an option either.
I know this is only a fraction of what you spoke about in the video, but as someone with IBSC (chronic constipation) and living a fully vegan lifestyle for a while now I’ve basically been completelyyyyyyy compacted for a while now and bloated . I do NOT want to go back to eating animal products at all at this point ethically I couldn’t handle it. Any ideas on how to deal with this without reincorporating animal products into my diet ? I think it’s most likely due to the increase in fiber and I have no idea how to eat a vegan diet lower in fiber or if it’s even possible ?
I honestly think is the first time I have heard a vegan say, 'It is okay to not be 100% perfect. If you are vegan except for bacon, that is still a big step.' There was a TED talk that was suggesting we make a big push for people to be flexitarian and remove animal products from their diet for at least one day of the week. The idea was that you could convert far more people, introduce them to lower meat/animal consumption, and make a huge environmental impact. I watched it and thought 'This seems like a great idea. I bet a lot of people wouldn't complain about doing it once a week or so. The environmental impact would be huge.' I was really pumped about it. And then I read the comments. It was dozens upon dozens of 100+ upvoted comments calling the speaker a murder, saying anyone who didn't go fully vegan was a monster, and blasting the idea of any sort of compromise/adjustment/strategic move. It completely ruined it for me and painted vegans in a horrendous light. It still bums me out a bit thinking about it.
You might be interested in a video called "Is honey vegan?" by Today I Found Out. They make an interesting point on how honey isn't as harsh as a lot of people think.
I am mostly vegan. The only thing (pretty much) that I eat that isn't vegan is eggs. I get those from a friend who keeps rescue hens, they're really well loved and cared for, and definitely not exploited. These hens have an amazing life and I don't feel at all guilty for eating their eggs.
I also discount the "May contain traces of milk" thing on labels. It's essentially a "don't sue us if you have an allergic reaction" label. And if I'm eating out, I'm not going to fuss about eating a vegan burger and some milk being in the bun.
“definitely not exploited” i know what you’re trying to go for here but... using an animal’s body for any purpose they did not (and obviously can’t) give consent for is, in fact, exploitation.
@@toridanielle333 These are rescue hens that are kept as pets. They lay eggs. Either these eggs will rot on the ground or they get eaten. Their bodies aren't used, and they're just as loved after they stop laying.
@@toridanielle333 Your argument is equally applicable to guide dogs, or dogs used in disaster zones to rescue people.
I get you. As long as the milk/ eggs hasn't been added into the food's ingredients, it doesn't apply as the company doesn't need to buy the ingredients for the food product. Like bourbons? "May contain milk" yeah but it isn't added in the ingredients which if it was would increase the amount the company would have to buy to supply for the bourbon demand and things would get messy but yeah bourbons in my country are accidentally vegan and may contain labels mean nothing to me
@@strangekat2840 i wouldn't say that. the definition of veganism is to avoid, as far as is *possible and practicable*, the use of animals in any way. therefore it may be impracticable for a person (whose life may depend on a guide or rescue dog) to do without. eating eggs certainly does not hold the same weight in that regard, especially when you consider the fact that you don't need eggs to live (and could easily get the same nutrients from other plant sources)
Do have recommendations for good (non-biased) podcasts about veganism?
Hey there! Curious If you would be open to a discussion about baby-lead weaning? I have seen this come up a ton lately and would love to hear your input.
This is why I enjoy watching your videos. Always thorought. Thanks
Wow. really informative and intellectual video with disclaimers? Subscribing lol
Which Portland did you move to? I live in Portland, OR but we don't have Kroger here, so I'm wondering if you mean Oregon or Maine. We do have Fred Meyer which is owned by Kroger.
I was waiting for you too make this video haha
Was this video sponsored by thrive market? Noticed you talk about it a lot.
lol
Your channel is underrated.💖💛
What’s your opinions on ethics behind avocados? There seems to be a lot of issues like cartel violence and water scarcity/shortage from over-farming.
I buy my almond (and hemp) milk and other pantry stuff at Thrive because it’s usually than Whole Foods. My only options are whole foods delivery or Instacart because I don’t drive. The latter usually prices higher than in store. So sometimes it saves money. Whether or not I’ve actually saved enough to justify the membership fee, I’ll be taking a closer look at before it renews.
Also, I do find I have more junk that I didn’t need before because I add random things to my cart but I think that’s true of a lot of places I shop at online.
