    • @BrootherHeck
      @BrootherHeck Před 2 lety +329

      It’s more likely Jolly Roger bay was added after as a kind of lead up to the water mechanics in Dire Dire Docks, and was added after. And since 64 games are infamous for using the same music to save space, that’s probably why

    • @NoahtheEpicGuy
      @NoahtheEpicGuy Před 2 lety +66

      @@BrootherHeck Are the sound files (or just files in general) even labelled on the N64? I always thought of it as memory rather than a file system, so they would store a song in the area of, for example, 0xF000 - 0xF7FF. (MIDIs are usually bigger than that, but the N64 sound chip isn't MIDI compatible, so it could in theory fit all of the JRB/DDD track). The N64 has way more memory than the NES (which uses 16-bit addressing, like in the example above), and the SM64 cart/rom was 8MB, but I still wouldn't waste any resources (CPU-related or storage-related) to index all the files (let alone just the sound files) by name. On modern computers, I would do it in a heartbeat (since we use HDDs and not battery-backed RAM, and it's not like we have much of a choice unless you made your own OS), but maybe there's a sticky note somewhere in the office where SM64 was produced with "Water Music - starts at _address_ and ends at _address_" written on it. Or, they just used an address table somewhere in memory, and have a sticky note listing all of the indices of that table, once again labelling JRB/DDD as "Water Music." The latter is probably what they did, at least with the table in memory, I have no idea about this hyperdimensional sticky note I keep bringing up.
      I'm not a SM64 expert, but rather more of an extreme computer and electronics hobbyist, so take this with a _slight_ grain of salt.
      Edit: I _could_ be wrong, but also maybe not. I was messing around with G64, an addon for Garry's Mod that puts our beloved Mario into Garry's Mod with 1:1 movement which reads directly from the ROM for models and sounds, and the music tracks for the wing/vanish cap and metal cap were listed as "Powerful Mario" and "Metallic Mario" respectively. However, when I opened the same ROM in a SM64 editor (specifically SM64 ROM Manager), it listed those tracks as "Wing Cap" and "Metal Cap," again, respectively. So, I don't know. I guess I could just search the ROM for that specific text. Specifically for a text that _doesn't_ share a name with a level, like "Inside the Castle Walls." I'll update this comment if I acquire the succulent information.

    POV: You are on your Winter break in January of 1998 and its your Birthday today. Its a Saturday and you've just woken up. You load up the Nintendo 64 and put in the Mario 64 cartridge. You load up single player and play all morning long, Happy that its the holidays. Mom comes in and saw that you are playing Mario. She wants to see what it is and she is fascinated. Later its time for Cake and you think to yourself 'This is the best day ever...' as you blow out the candles.
    Its now 2024 and you look through your old stuff and see your old N64 and the Mario cartridge. You plug it in to the old TV and play for while and get distracted with what you were doing. All of a sudden a flash from 1996 comes into memory. Your 11th birthday...

    I never learned it formally and it’s crazy how I was able to pick it up because it was so engrained in me.

      Rhythms: :(
      In all seriousness this song is really fun to play. Also, if you're looking for some more interesting music, try Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Triumvirat. Tarkus was one of the inspirations for one of the Final Fantasy games. The albums Tarkus and Brain Salad Surgery are where I notice a lot of material that is used decades later in games. Rock, jazz, and classical are like the three cornerstones of video game music. If you're knowledgeable of this kinda stuff, prog has the same characteristics, which is why it draws so many parallels to video game music.

    I imagine this song playing while you are relaxing underwater on a seabed, not very deep, not very high, around 6.00 AM. The sun's rays hit the water, which creates some light in the still partly dark sea. You are in the right spot, in the middle of this transition. While you relax, you see that on one side you can see the seabed with many corals in the distance and lots of tropical and non-tropical fish, and on the other you can see the seashore and the beach. There are many fishes swimming beside you. And you are relaxing enjoying the moment and reflecting on your whole life. This song makes you relax so much that you fall asleep at one point. This song is literally the representation of a relaxing and funny summer. I hope I can have a vibe like that in real life instead of writing it this summer.

    For years I never understood why this song was so highly-regarded as an all-time great vgm track. It felt so... empty. Last year, I felt a little blue and a remix (Qumu) of Dire Dire Docks happened to come on. I leaned back and just soaked it in, and everything just clicked. I finally got it.

    We are the sum of our reflections in the water
    All we can be
    Beneath the light we see the shapes of all our best lives
    In the dreaming
    So join with us today
    We’ll sit along the bay
    And share the dreams together
    Life cannot be loved without play
    And you will find your beauty shines back from the water
    Just to make your day
    Beneath the light you’ll see what your best life can offer
    If you find your dreams

    Take this balm
    Lie still and calm
    No one shall harm your dreams
    We are the sum of our reflections in the water
    All we can be
    Beneath the light we see the shapes of all our best lives
    In the dreaming
    So join with us today

    Everything about this track hits different. The vibe was outside of what we'd heard before we got to Dire Dire Docks. The chord progression is so fluid and relaxing, it SOUNDS like being beneath the waves in an underwater world, and the best part was the transition of the musical elements based on where you were in the stage. The music evolved with your gameplay, as the closer you got to the sunken ship, the more parts played at once. It made you want to explore to hear if there were any other versions of the song that you just hadn't heard yet. More games do this kind of thing now, but I would argue this was a first for many. Still one of the best pieces of music in video games, period.

    In the actual game, after the first loop the song will change between lacking the percussion and having it when you go in and out of the water. It adds a lot to the atmosphere as you swap from swimming and platforming. Much of the brilliance with Super Mario 64 is in small nuances like this.
