Composed by David Wise. Recreated by me. This was made possible by locating the original instrument samples from workstation keyboards and drum machines before they were put into the game and rebuilding the soundtrack from the ground up, applying some modern mixing techniques along the way to lift the veil of 16bit compression and create an updated listening experience. Part of a project to restore the entire DKC series soundtrack. Follow me on Twitter for more updates: / princesamlet

"It's just a silly game about a gorilla, just compose something"
David Wise: *composes a banger of a soundtrack *
Just a silly game about apes and yet this song brings me to tears, hahaha, go figure humans...
Nah bro, Rare wasn't investing 150k per workstation to just compose something. They went all in
@BrunoSenra brings me to tears too man...life was so different than it is now when i first heatd this....
video games were better when they were made by 20 people
From an interview, David said they didn't even know what the game was going to be about yet and compsed this as just a like "Yeah you know, here's some bass lines and stuff, get it working." He said Trent Reznor had heard his music from DKC1 and liked it, and that's when he knew he had made it as a musician.
I was 8 when this released and I’m 37 now. There’s a reason I love to see gameplay of these old games and hear the music just like this… it’s because each one of these games.. each one of these soundtracks takes me back to a moment in time. It takes me back to a specific time, and a specific person that I played the game with. Whether it was my father watching me play the game.. or my neighbor Andrew sitting next to me as we play through the entire game. It’s not simply nostalgia to hear soundtracks like this… it’s like we’re warping in a time capsule. Returning to that moment and reliving it. Remembering the scenery, the atmosphere, the smells.. it’s returning to that specific room, in that specific house that we played the game. It can be very happy, or very sad for some of us. These aren’t just games… these are little time capsules. These are part of our brain, part of our hearts.

I had a childhood friend who's been gone for a couple decades now, but these game clips and OSTs remind me of playing w him in mid 90s, when this game hit it's peak on SNES 😢❤❤
Me too ❤️
Memes the DNA of the soul.
It takes me back to my childhood best friends basement. His name was Jesse. I haven't talked to him in over 20 years. I think the thing I miss about this is the fact that childhood responsibilities were incredibly small compared to adult responsibilities. I'd love to go back to having easy schoolwork being my only responsibilities.
my one wish would be to swim/ explore the deepest oceans with some headphones on while this song on infinite loop and to never come out for all eternity.
That is a mood
My one wish is too never ever do that. The ocean is my biggest fear ever. Although I still love this song and ocean games although they still give me the creeps.
If you go scuba diving, you can get raptures of the deep. And with this song too...
@@avgyoshi3600 you really want some creeps from ocean games? Try playing Ecco the Dolphin. the original on Genesis manages to portray the mystery and horror of the depths very well, but the 3D versions on PS2 i believe, those ones look extra eerie because of the low draw distance.
That would be the most terrifying thing ever
- this sound reminds me of a time of no stress. No struggle. No fears. No smart phones. just 90s kid life😢
Nice pfp
Yeah unti it replays for about the 10th time. I have a headache now, its nostalgia for about 3 minutes.
@@darnelldinkins77 I can see that. I can enjoy some mario kart wii music for a couple of minutes before I start to get a bit tired.
You can still not have a smart phone. Can't promise not having the other things mentioned.
the 2010s are much better as we aren't limited
can't imagine how much more bittersweet this beautiful music would be if I'd played it as a kid
it's so nostalgic bro, i played it when I was 11
it really is. Rented an SNES from blockbuster and played it non-stop when i was 5 or 6. I could never beat this level in one try, i'd just sit and listen to this track lol
It was nice, but it was mostly played on old tvs, some people’s television speakers were not that great (I’m sure there were lucky people/ / upper class)
However, this is the first time people hear how it was meant to be heard.
@@organicwins91 As someone who heard the insanely compressed 32KHz, 8-bit audio as a teen, this is how I always dreamed it would sound... *Mind blown*
I can for the both of us... I experienced this game as a 13 year old. Hearing this uncompressed at full fidelity is tears-of-joy inducing...
Reminds me of my childhood so much. Miss the 90’s and early 2000’s

I’m here with you
@Felix G Treviño my dad passed away in 2019, and all we did was play Mario Kart or Super Mario 64. And Zelda, obviously. So it's awesome we have those memories. 🫶🏻🥰
@@brittanystack6413 I’m sorry about you’re loss. It’s horrible. I can’t bare to lose anyone else in my family.
I love all the Mario games. Even the sonic ones. The first sonic and the first level, that song hits too ❤️
Don't we all
I still play this game almost daily. Im currently 27, I normally dont play anything online with my friends alot, I just want to play this. I still remember being a child at our first home and playing this in the basement. Before I was aware of anxiety and depression, this was the meaning to my existence. I've lost alot of family, and friends over the years, but I will never lose my love for this game. Im so happy and fortunate to see all the other people in the comments who have mutual feelings towards this experience 🖤.
There's an infinite amount of good and bad things happening right now. Whichever one you focus on determines how you feel. You're only getting older and it's time for you to give back to the world. The sooner you can accept that things are changing, the sooner you can clear up your depression and anxiety. When you're young it's all about you receiving things like birthdays, Christmas, fresh experiences, etc. Now that you're older it's time for you to give back to the world. The existence of your life is whatever you make it. If you're looking for a change in this world, it starts with the person in the mirror.
This brings tears to my eyes, not because it's sad because it's not, but because of how beautiful it is, it is a true masterpiece.
Same. Glad we could share some tears over this awesome tune.

It was unexpected and the vet said she had a heart problem we didn't know about until after we found out she died. I just hoped that she didn't feel pain and i still get heartbroken when i see her pictures and think of how fast she passed without a warning.
Why did they have to make the official anthem for childhood 90s nostalgia…for a game about a monkey. The producer didn’t have to go this hard. Bro is riding a fish collecting bananas underwater. Meanwhile, the player has tears streaming down his face reminiscent on when Wendy’s had that sunroom dining area…wild
This is spot on perfect it sounds so good. When GameXplain did their DKC 25th anniversary celebration week, one of their audio interviews was with David, and he said Aquatic Ambience he feels like was his best and favorite piece he ever composed for the series. He loved it so much that's why he re-recorded a new version for Tropical Freeze.
I feel like David likes Aquatic Ambiance a little too much, because he reused it a bit too often in DKC3 GBA and DKCTF. After the umpteenth reference to it in Tropical Freeze, it was losing its magic.

This song alone is what inspired me to start composing soundtracks at a young age. Nothing to date matches the beauty of this song coming out of the SNES’ most basic 16 bit audio engine. It taught me a musician can make anything no matter how basic the tools they are given.
The SNES audio chip was advanced for its time.

There's something mesmerizing about the old donkey Kong country graphics, add the music and you have a dreamlike experience
I remember listening to this every weekend in the living room of my family's small Las Vegas apartment at sixteen. I loved good game music back then as much as I do today -- FF6 was another one of my favorites from that time period for the same reason, although Squaresoft hadn't yet fixed the numbering issue and it was still FF3.
My dad when he was a kid would have this level going and turn the tv off so it would only play out the speakers and go to sleep to it. When I was a kid he bought an SNES for his own nostalgias sake not realizing that he created a second generation of nostalgia. Now here I am reminded of my simple youth.
Awesome story, thank you for sharing!

You knew what sections to open up and expand on really nice work .
One of my fondest memories as a kid was being on long car rides with my parents, because they liked going on trips, and listening to this damn song. My gameboy advanced wasn't backlit, so I couldn't actually play anything when it was dark out, so instead, I would just load up levels from dkc and listen to the music on repeat until my gba died.
Whoever made this for this game, not only poured their heart into it, but got completely possessed by music… they gave it their all. They bodied this.
The man behind the song was David Wise. Not only did he compose it, he also went through so many steps to compress it just right to make it playable within the SNES's 64kb audio chip without crashing the console (all the instruments in the song ate up so much memory) while keeping the song sounding good.
That took real talent.
