Marketplace bites into breakfast, spilling juicy secrets about premium orange juice and putting popular breakfast sandwiches to the test.
About two-thirds of us have bought premium orange juice in the past six months, many convinced by claims of pure and natural juice, which make it seem like oranges fall off the tree into the carton. But that’s not the whole story. Tom Harrington talks to juice lovers and an expert who wrote the book on OJ, revealing just how much it is processed and what the labels don’t tell you.

Orange is the New Black.
Just tried to squeeze my own orange juice.
9 oranges and 6 dollars later I have a half of a glass. Delicious.
thats what makes it so easy to drink so much sugar and its not recommended for anyone. normally you´d have to eat 9 oranges for just half of a glass. at most you would propably eat a single orange in the morning.
In my country you can buy like 10 kg of orange for 6$
Anything can become juice with enough force. Consider including the peels, receipt, and bag it came in, then move on to your table.

I tried *concentrated OJ* (canned in freezer section) on a whim recently, and I was blown away by how much more "fresh-squeezed" it actually tasted!! *We could actually taste the fiber & peel, and its "oily" citric scent was divine.* I made it with our filtered water, and it cost much less than the premium, processed stuff. Perhaps it tastes so fresh because it's not stored for a year, which maintains it's natural flavor...not needing secret flavor packets that result from a chemical process on a natural occurring ingredient. I wish CBC had mentioned more about the concentrated versions and their process.
I'm going to have to ask my folks to pickup some canned frozen juices to test this out.
Warning: May contain traces of real oranges.

1000% agree. I hate most store bought juices because of that. They're no better than sugary soda. I say "I don't like juice" But the truth is, no one knows what juice is anymore, so it's easier to just flat out say you don't like it. A bit too much fluff in this video. It could have been quite a bit shorter. You can explain all of the OJ segment in 8 minutes or less.

I completely disagree. Maybe it was just you. But for a documentary or a report it needs to be more elaborate. Create your own youtube channel and will see. Make a report for less than 8 minutes.
I've never thought the orange juice in cans / bottles was really fresh because you get orange at times of the year that oranges don't grow in your area, so that means it comes from other areas that are further way. Oranges start to go bad as soon as you pick it off the tree which means to get the orange from there to you something is added to keep it fresh. Not to mention you can't keep fresh squeezed orange for longer than a day. Anyway
Real oranges can only be truly enjoyed if they're eaten within the first hour of being picked; otherwise, the flavor isn't really there afterwards.
Yep, if you want fresh orange juice then just make it yourself. It blows my mind that people really think they're just squeezing oranges directly into the cartons.
Rusty Shackleford , obviously people don’t think somebody is squeezing the juice by hand. It’s mass produced so it’s a machine. You probably also think miss Vickie actually makes her chips at the farm.
@@RogerBLEU Well, I use to. I also use to envision the songs I heard on the radio were all live. I was 5.
Growing up in West Africa in the 60-70's, I remember we just peeled the fresh oranges and ate them any time. And there were lots of them too. If one wanted to be fancy, go ahead and squeeze them for some juice, which I always found to be too much work for the amount of juice one gets. People should be encouraged to eat more fresh fruits as much as possible. Anything packaged, often, cannot be free of chemistry. If you are enjoying some OJ in the winter months, you are most likely drinking from a batch from a pasturized storage barrel.
Everything is chemistry (H2O, O2, CH4....), but I get what you mean though.. ..
Are you residing in West Africa now. But I agree. Eat the whole fruit. The past few years I follow so many ppl that have a juicer or high powered blender to extract nutrients.

Been doing this for years now. I told myself (and my wife) that for the same amount of money we would spend on commercial brand name fruit juices, might as well spend it on the real, actual fruit and make our own juice, smoothie or shake. OR simply just eat it as-is. Been trying to go all-natural or homemade as much as we can. Healthier, and actually also saves us a little bit, too.

Haven’t you ever wondered why every glass of Tropicana Pure Premium orange juice tastes the same, no matter where in the world you buy it or what time of year you’re drinking it in? Or maybe your brand of choice is Minute Maid or Simply Orange or Florida’s Natural. Either way, I can ask the same question. Why is the taste and flavor so consistent? Why is it that the Minute Maid never tastes like the Tropicana, but always tastes like its own unique beverage?
Generally speaking, beverages that taste consistently the same follow recipes. They’re things like Coca Cola or Pepsi or a Starbucks Frappuccino. When you make orange juice at home, each batch tastes a little different depending on the oranges you made it from. I hope you’re hearing warning bells in your head right about now.
The reason your store bought orange juice is so consistently flavorful has more to do with chemistry than nature.
Making OJ should be pretty simple. Pick oranges. Squeeze them. Put the juice in a carton and voilà!
But actually, there is an important stage in between that is an open secret in the OJ industry. After the oranges are squeezed, the juice is stored in giant holding tanks and, critically, the oxygen is removed from them. That essentially allows the liquid to keep (for up to a year) without spoiling- but that liquid that we think of as orange juice tastes nothing like the Tropicana OJ that comes out of the carton. (source)
When the juice is stripped of oxygen it is also stripped of flavor providing chemicals. Juice companies therefore hire flavor and fragrance companies, the same ones that formulate perfumes for Dior and Calvin Klein, to engineer flavor packs to add back to the juice to make it taste fresh. Flavor packs aren’t listed as an ingredient on the label because technically they are derived from orange essence and oil. Yet those in the industry will tell you that the flavor packs, whether made for reconstituted or pasteurized orange juice, resemble nothing found in nature. The packs added to juice earmarked for the North American market tend to contain high amounts of ethyl butyrate, a chemical in the fragrance of fresh squeezed orange juice that, juice companies have discovered, Americans favor. Mexicans and Brazilians have a different palate. Flavor packs fabricated for juice geared to these markets therefore highlight different chemicals, the decanals say, or terpene compounds such as valencine.
The formulas vary to give a brand’s trademark taste. If you’re discerning you may have noticed Minute Maid has a candy like orange flavor. That’s largely due to the flavor pack Coca-Cola has chosen for it. Some companies have even been known to request a flavor pack that mimics the taste of a popular competitor, creating a “hall of mirrors” of flavor packs. Despite the multiple interpretations of a freshly squeezed orange on the market, most flavor packs have a shared source of inspiration: a Florida Valencia orange in spring. (source)
WHY AREN’T THESE FLAVOR PACKS LISTED AS INGREDIENTS?
Good question! As with all industrial foods, it’s because of our convoluted labeling laws. You see, these “flavor packs are made from orange by-products - even though these ‘by-products’ are so chemically manipulated that they hardly qualify as ‘by-products’ any more.” (source) Since they’re made from by-products that originated in oranges, they can be added to the orange juice without being considered an “ingredient,” despite the fact that they are chemically altered.
SO, WHAT SHOULD YOU DO ABOUT IT?
First off, I must ask: Why are you drinking juice?? Juice removed from the fruit is just concentrated fructose without any of the naturally-occurring fiber, pectin, and other goodies that make eating a whole fruit good for you. Did you know, for example, that it takes 6-8 medium sized apples to make just 1 cup of apple juice? You probably wouldn’t be able to eat 6-8 medium apples in a single sitting. (I know I can barely eat one!) But you can casually throw back a cup of apple juice, and you would probably be willing to return for seconds. That’s why fruit juice is dangerous. It’s far too easy to consume far too much sugar.

The 'flavor packs' makes sense because they need to make your orange juice taste the same no matter when or where you buy it; you'd be peeved if it tasted different each time. Do I think they should add that to the ingredient list? Yes. But am I angry they do? Not really. If I want "straight from the orange" juice, I'll go buy the processed oranges myself, thank you.

I don't care that they add flavoring. It annoys me that people actually think that fruit juices are healthy. They're just as bad as soda. Not the companies fault, but fresh and natural doesn't mean you should consume it.
I REALLY want to add:
Ethyl Butyrate is synthesized by reacting Ethanol with Butyric Acid.
Butyric Acid is synthesized through the oxidation of Butyraldehyde.
Butyraldehyde is synthesized through the hydroformylation of Propylene.

I grew up in Florida near orange groves where they would squeeze the oranges right at the groves and sell you the juice. So I grew up knowing how orange juice should taste - which is wonderful. First time I had some "orange juice" from a box, I could not believe how bad it was. I live up north now, but I still only drink fresh squeezed - preferably from Valencia oranges. Just bought a bag of Valencia oranges today and will squeeze them tomorrow AM. Will have orange juice for the rest of the week from that bag.
Investigative journalism definitely has its place in protecting public interest. Thank you Marketplace for the juicy story ;-)
If the average Canadian had common sense we wouldn't need this government subsidized media outlet.
I can't believe people really still think drinking any kind of bottled fruit juice on a daily basis is healthy. There's too much sugar in ANY type of processed juices, even if it's "natural" sugar or naturally occurring fruit sugar. Drinking any citric juice daily causes havoc on your teeth, and the increased intake of sugars can't be good for your body in the long term. The family in the video that drinks six cartons a month...I'd really hate to see the acid erosion and dental problems that's going to develop some time down the road, especially the children with newly erupted adult teeth.

Drinking orange juice is like drinking soda--- pure sugar. If you like oranges, just eat an orange. Avoid PROCESSED FOODS.
Really? Pure sugar?
Exactly. Drinking 1/2 cup of orange juice is equivalent to eating 2-4 medium-sized oranges. All the fiber that orange flesh provides is removed during the juicing process, and all that’s left over is sugar from the fruit. Fiber is supposed to keep us full and prevent overeating. Sugary drinks cause overeating!
Indeed! Also for people who want to learn more about sugar and how juice companies try to market juices as healthy, I recommend the documentary “That Sugar Film.”
@Jesse Johnson, Sure , OJ companies don't add sugar, but oranges naturally have a lot of sugar. As Miki Hazel pointed out, when we eat whole oranges, we only eat about one or two before getting full, and we consume the fiber. However, if we extract only the sugary juice from the fruit, we can consume much more of it, because the fiber is not there to fill us up.
Juices do not have fructose corn syrup but a lot of sugar. Both are bad but juice can be a liiittle bit better.
Love this, I watch on YT. What TV channels/countries show it?

I've been trying to tell this people for several years now, but people just seem to get defensive about it as if orange juice is their religion or something.
Fresh orange juice is easy enough to make at home but people have forgotten how to do it. My parents generation used to get fresh orange juice delivered to the home daily along with fresh milk in glass bottles. My grandmothers house still has a metal milk box by the back door which the milk delivery man used to drop the fresh milk off every other day. I think we need to go back to those days.

Could we please end this notion already that fat in food makes you fat. It does not. Excess calories, typically caused by eating too much refined sugar and junk carbs, is what makes you fat. In other words, it's not the burger, it's the bun, the glop on the burger, the fries, the Coke, and the desert that make you fat.
+Eric K How does a harsh environment make you fat?
+Eric K Depends which fats. Unsaturated usually are good and break down easy enough. Some of the saturated fats (that a lot of America fast food companies use) don't break down easily; and the fat gets stored in your body that makes you fat.
The key to stay in shape is simply eating low-calory-high-energy food in combination with regular working out.
STR33TSofJUST1C3
Sorry, but the giant hamburger bun has no fat, the ketchup you put on the burger has no fat, the fries have fat but are loaded with carbs, and the Coke has no fat. The actual beef you get in your burger is the least of our problems.
Eric K
Did I say that only fat makes you fat? You said that fatties don't make you fat; and I corrected you that saturated fatties are the worst of the bunch. I didn't say you were wrong on carbs.
STR33TSofJUST1C3
"Low-calory-high-energy" Isn't that a contradiction in itself? Isn't the energy content of food measured in calories?
Just eat an orange in the morning then. Is that so hard.
+William but the sugar in Orange Juice is fructose, which is good sugar.
is there a bad sugar? i thought all sugar was equal, and sugar is infact good for you. it nourishes your cells. It is the concentration and amount of sugar we intake that is bad for us.
There is bad sugar. For example, diet drinks will cause your pancreas to think there *is* sugar from the artificial sweeteners in it. Since there is no real sugar, your appetite increases. A more specific example, saccharin, a popular "Sweet n Low" kind of sweetener, is biologically not sugar. Tasting sweet =/= sugar.
+Jason Big that's not true. Sugar is good for you. It nourishes your cells. It's the quantity that we consume that's bad for you. Plants evolved to produce sugar in nectar and fruits to feed insects and mammals. Why sugar if it was bad for you? For the sake of making money the natural foods given to us by this planet are corrupted and then when it corrupts our health more people who want to make money tell you it's bad for you and to sign up on their weight loss program for sugar free food or instruction. Its all a scam. Just eat natural and whole when you can. Pick an orange over a glass of juice.
There is nothing wrong with almost any sugars provided they are contained within the "natural" food. Perhaps the only exception to that is honey, which is mainly just concentrated sugars.
The problem is with added processed sugars, of which we are getting too much. The the manufacturers do not want to put on the labels what is the percentage of ADDED sugars, just totals sugars.
Things like tomato sauce or ketchup have up to 35% sugar, where in reality there should be no ADDED sugars. And there is so many names they call sugar so we never know what the manufacturers are really adding.
Cut out added sugars or anything that contains added sugars, and provided you don't eat far to much or any processed foods, you will lose weight.
That includes processed fruit juices. Eat fresh where possible.
Can anyone point me in the direction of where I can purchase "flavor packs"
If I've learned anything from watching marketplace.. it's everyone company/tradesman/business.. lies to you.
That shirt the host is wearing looks like a drug dealers shirt.
+Ben Oto el chapo anyone?
el chapo style going off
Know a lot of drug dealers do ya?
just drink water, the amount of sugar in any juice is not doing you any good ...
Its the vitamins people are after. Natural juices in fruits are fine as long as you don't have a huge excess
I advise you to let your water check at a lab. You might be surprised what is in 'just water'. Rainwater actually contains less 'ingredients' than tap water. The water companies need to put aal kind of anti-corrosives into the water to avoid rusty waterpipes.. Bet you didn't knew that..
@@2Fast4Mellow what are you going to drink then
Drink water and eat an orange...
@@WaitingForStorm Basically everything in life is bad for you. tap water contains all sort of corrosives, bottles water contains a lot of plastic. btw: Sugar itself is not bad, actually we need it. Sugar is one of the most efficient sources of food to give your body energy. That is why most high energie ingradients have a sweet taste. We are programmed to like sweet things.. As with everything, to much of something can also be bad for you.. It's all about moderation!
In a chain of grocery stores in my country (i am from Europe) there are self service machines that squeeze the oranges and then you have different size bottles and you pick the size you want, fill it up, and pay for your orange juice at the cashier.
at 19:20, does the way Canadian pronounce Big Mac , oddly sounding?
Wine experts can’t even tell apart the taste of red wine and white wine so why trust them with orange juice?
@@MisaloSloe the price of the wine has nothing to do with quality or taste so there's that.
Brandon Le it’s not just “self proclaimed” wine experts but also the “real” ones
The Proclaimed are you kidding? I don't even drink and I can tell you a white from a red...don't be daft!
I've been making orange juice for years with my braun juicer. It comes out similar to what you would buy at an Orange Julius stand. It's translucent and super delicious. There's no duplicating that flavour or consistency 😋
I absolutely LOVE this show! more than anything!!
Gr8 video. Makes it clear why fresh squeezed orange juice taste different than packaged.....
Oh mannn...Marketplace has done it again, every time I watch these I have to cross stuff off my grocery list haha
Nicaela Emily , they didn’t actually conclude the juice loses its nutritional value or is bad for you. They only concluded that juice may not be picked the day before you drink it. I’m sure if you knew how everything was made you wouldn’t eat or drink again.
@@andrewdishman335 pasteurization definitely kills all vitamin C, and I believe that is later added, again. It's a massive scam.
Andrew Dishman mmmmm they’re still lying, and it’s wrong. I don’t care if year old oj is exactly the same as freshly squeezed, it’s a lie and consumers are being duped.
Fat and calories aren't inherently bad for you.. People who require a higher caloric diet need to pay through the roof due to food regulators / governments babying the population.
Make your own decisions / choices. Should food be clearly labeled? *YES!*
Should high calorie foods be outlawed, banned and recipes changed? No. Take responsibility for what you choose to eat.
Azurren This thing is out of pace with the current science. Excess carbs & sugar are the enemy, not Fat. Hell, even the sodium cause high blood pressure "fact" is now being questioned. Carbs & sugar cause high LDL levels, not fat and this is what is increasing blood pressure more so.
***** ... excessive sodium causing high blood pressure is a scientific fact. Source: Frederic Martini: Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology.
Biggs Darklighter Excessive vitamin A intake can lead to hypervitaminosis. Eating excessive quantities of most things is highly inadvisable.
That doesn't mean you should avoid vitamins / minerals. Or sodium for that matter.
Azurren Yeah, I totally agree with not avoiding eating or vitamins and minerals. I'd hate to sound arrogant, but I think when people comment on thing they're ignorant about it can spread. It's detrimental. I mean, I'm about to take a medical admission test and when I see people say things like, "Sodium being bad for you in excessive quantities is not true", it's just like... it's dumb.
Azurren They should make a law that prohibits people from drinking coca cola after 6pm, because it makes people sleep baldy...
This makes me hungry - i grabbed two egg mcmuffins and an OJ at mcDonald's this morn. It was awesome
I miss having orange trees in my yard. We used to juice our own Navel oranges for a morning glass and it was super delicious. I can't drink store bought Orange juice because it's not the same to me as having it from the source immediately
I like to eat oranges instead of drinking it
1:03 *"Wine Expert"* Adam ruins everything anyone?
yup I have, like Adam said, they are full of it lol.
TheFelish33 now adams a feminazi
no he just want you educate yourself on the misleading information of food products i actually learn alot from this segment of segments i watch an hour or so of it got an ear food
TheFelish33 lmfao I thought that when I heard that
I love oranges, but never liked orange juice.
To bitter
Orange juice with half a squeezed lemon juice. ..
I don't believe in drinking juices for health. By juicing, you leave out the fiber and a lot of other nutrients. You will also end up eating a lot more as it is less filling and you will eat it a lot quicker, increasing the effects of the sugar (yes, fruit sugar has less effect but still has an effect)
Lance Lindle Lee Exactly, thank you!
im the opposite
Does frozen oj concentrate also add the flavor packs
What about fresh squeezed juice but with a help of high pressure preservation to make it a little bit more shelf stable?
Who eats breakfast sausage daily? For me it's mostly a road trip thing.
+Karol Bała its an occasion thing. If were making a real breakfast for the family to have together or something, thats when we'd have it. On random morning when we're all doing our own thing, maybe 1 day out of 30 Id make sausage or bacon to go with the eggs.
+Karol Bała really popular in university campuses across canada
+Karol Bała Who eats any types of sausages? Gross!
johnny clue gross? in Poland i've had the best sausage!
+Karol Bała same i only eat sausages on road trips well somtimes at my house
Or go to Whole Foods and get OJ from that machine that uses like 10 oranges for one 12 oz cup
$10.00 a gallon
Lawrence Hu na more like 20$ for a gallon
May I squeeze your Navel Oranges?
I use a Kuvings C7000 and can get a glass from like 3-5 oranges depending on the size of the orange
Used to work at Lykes Pasco juice processing plant im Dade City Florida from 1991 through 1994. It is all the same all brands were made from the same oranges. Bluebird, Minute Maid, Winn Dixie brand and many others all processed in the same way, same plant.
Depends which oranges you squeeze some are foul some are delicious. What did they use?
Oh wow, orange juice is the juice squeezed from oranges that gets stored. WHO WOULD HAVE GUESSED!
If you expect orange juice to be literately orange's liquids squeezed into a bottle then shipped to your local supermarket you should go back to school and learn about food deterioration.
Sylvia Cumings looks like someone is getting defensive.
Supermarkets here usually have a orange juice making machine. So much practical and natural.
I live in Brazil (one of the world's largest exporters of orange juice) where a kilo of oranges that I use to make fresh squeezed juice everyday costs abou CDN $1.00. We also have the fresh squeezer machines in the supermarket where the customer puts abottle under the spigot and the machine squeezes out 900 ml and it costs CDN $1.50. How does that compare to Canadian prices?
Dude, that purple shirt is EPIC! Love it.
As a native Floridian, this is why I never buy any of this packaged junk.
Everything is chemicals. Whether it's created in a lab or in a fruit, a molecule is a molecule.
@@IsomerMashups - Sure. But the molecules they are creating in their labs and adding to the processed juice are not identical to the molecules that their processing removed from the juice. Not even close. Easy enough to squeeze your own and that is what I do. Tastes sooooooooo much better. Like two completely different beverages.
jawtek82 you’re correct also same deal with sugar
jawtek82 natalies or country side is the best don't @ me
same my family will make it by themself and never bought it from a store
“I want the tropicanaaa “😂 never heard a man get so aggressive over some OJ
I know this is an old video but i just watched it and a question popped. I remember seeing in a movie about a fresh orange juice delivery like daily fresh milk, I guess it was either Florida or California. Is it really a thing in the USA? If so, what is it like compared to fresh squeeze that you make at home? Where I live, highly processed food is still not very common and i can definitely taste a fresh homemade one from any mass produced juice. I used to work as a bartender when I was younger and box orange juice (local brands) tasted and still tastes like oranges are squeezed together with their skins and my customers could easily taste the difference even in a cocktail. Never tried the brands mentioned here, especially because they are big corp brands. What are your thoughts about the things I listed above?
Many years ago Sunkist Orange was launched in Australia with the boast it contained 5% crushed oranges. A couple of years later, they marketed a new & improved formula... and had gotten rid of the crushed orange ingredient!!
