- My 09 110c.i. CVO Road Glide developed a TICK. This is just a quick video to show what I found and just an idea of what to look for should you happen to discover a similar engine noise.

Not what I wanted to hear, but def what I needed to hear. 2011 FLSTN (96ci) doing exactly the same thing. Thanks for posting this!!
Thank you very helpful now I’m off to find a video on how to replace your lifters, cheers Bubba 👊🏼
I am happy I was able to help. Thank you for the comment!
Always use Jim's roller lifters and roller rockers. I sprung and got the titanium pushrods as well. I have rocker lockers installed.
Very informative and well said
Thank you.
Nice find. Thanks I'll check mine out tonight
What did you find on your bike?
2012- 1200 sportster same thing! Thank you
To the point I like that. Gave the sound gave the cure. In chasing down the same thing. Could be bikes that sit for periods of time. I know mine has. In just going to put some lifters in it.what else could it be. Top end is very simple on a twin cam.
This is a pretty specific sound. Most notably it was not a consistent tick. Kind of all over the place. Did not seem to follow the rotation of the engine. If it sounds like mine did I would most definitely put new lifters in. Can’t hurt. Let me know what you find.
Thank you very good . My buddy is having identical problem thanks
You are very welcome. Hope he was able to correct the problem before any major damage.
Tkhs for Sharing
Loved the video. What lifters did you buy. I have a 110” CVO as well
How many miles. I replaced everything in my '12 streetglide at 56k miles. Used fueling lifters. 570-2 cyclorama cams. Screaming eagle oil pump and cam plate. 98.7 h.p. 116 ftlbs of tourque with good headpipe from drag specialties and vance and hines pipes and good dyno tune.
I had a 1200 Sportster 1991 that had a rear cylinder hydraulic lifter that didn't pump up ! Noisy Bastard! That was in England. Over here in NC the next door neighbor has had two CVO Road Glides . The newest was making the same noise. Thought it could have been the adjustable push rods but NO it was his hydraulic lifters that had crapped out !🤔😳😎Hope this is information for someone!👍😎🇺🇸
yeah they seem to be a common issue. maybe HD needs to listen to the complaints and do something about it.
Yo just a question but was your bike like dying when you would let it idle down
We have an 01 Classic and an 01 Softail. Installed Johnson Lifters with Quick Install pushrods, and all clicking gone!
I actually have the same noise , little less frequent but also kinda random and found this video here. I think that is a pretty good match and will try to verfiy this now with my tech. Very nice find and precious video ! How big of a "investment" is it to change 4 lifters ?
I have been digging mad digging and finally found your video to have a similar enough sound to my bike, that I think it gives me hope. Did your sound start out like a pebble hitting your exhaust every once in a while and then progressively get worse, or did your noise come in all at once?
Hey CodyDean, yeah it progressively got worse.
great info. thanks😅
Glad it helped.
Hi, I have the same or similar ticking noise on my 110 TC, it sounded kinda like yours but also like i would throw some screws in a bucket and shake it. was not consistent and only once the engine got hot. They guy in the garage told me that 2 lifters were broken and the sound is carried out to the top of the engine. However, cam seems broken and oil pump too. Can a broken lifters be the cause or do the lifters brake because something else in the engine might broke first? People are telling that lifters dont break and if there are its because something else broke first. Thanks!
have the same problem , CVO 110ci flhtcuse7 - 2012 and 45000 km on the clock , bike is in the shop for lifters , and puchrods
currently have the same noise. Replaced all lifters just because they have 68,000 miles on them. Noise is still there but in the top end. Time to dig deeper.
Let us know what you find!
Did you figure it out?
@@theharleydavidsonmotorcycl945 yes, end up the previous owner had a hack at the dealership do some repair work in the primary. When reassembled they failed to put the spacer between the compensator/stator rotor. So when it wore the rotor teeth and it was clattering the same have said only way yo fix was to replace the crank…another hack tack welded the rotor to the crank. End result, tack welds came apart.
After hours of surgically filing off the welds as to not destroy the crankshaft I installed a new stator/rotor set, installed proper spacer and volia runs like new!
I have a 2001 Road King and it has not had much use, only 25,900 kms. Noticed a similar noise the other day, just had it serviced and the noise is still there. Does sound like it is coming from cam case, perhaps time to investigate the lifters. Cheers for the info.
Did you get it figured out?
@@theharleydavidsonmotorcycl945 - took it for a ride the other day after going around it with a spanner and screw driver. A few of the worm drive clamps holding the chrome covers on the exhausts were loose, this seems to have stopped the noise but will continue to monitor. Thanks.
@@jeffbarr6816 I have spent hours looking for a “tick” on a couple of my bikes and twice it turned out to just be a lose horn cover. Drove me crazy!!
@@theharleydavidsonmotorcycl945 - no more noise, it was the loose worm drive clamps that were vibrating.
💯
Did you have any concerns of some of the roller bearings missing from the lifter and being down in the cam chest?
I thought of that but I think the roller would have displayed a lot more damage.
Hey I've got an 04 cvo. Almost same exact sound. Now just to confirm a little more with ya, sounds primarily in the cam cover area, and if you give it throttle it goes away a little correct?
Jake, yeah giving it some throttle would calm it down a bit. And yes it was in the cam cover area. If it sounded like mine I would definitely check it out. Hope you are able to figure it out.
Did you replace them with OEM or did you go with another brand?
I did not use OEM.I bought some from Dennis Kirk. The brand was Fueling Parts HP+. I would have find the order to confirm the exact part number. But you can just look it up by your bike model . Hope you get it figured out. Thx for the comment!
Oh, and since I already had it apart I put in rocker lockers. It did quiet it down some. Thx.
I have 2017 FLSS (Softail Slim S) and just started to hear the same noise from the engine. Replacing lifters will only be the solution? I think this is because of much more bigger pressure and temperature caused by 110 Screaming Eagle Engine. You should add an oil cooler and oil pump system to cool down the engine. Otherwise, the same problem could occur again.
The CVO’s come with an oil cooler. But I have heard of several people with 110 having the same issue. So I do not think it is a heat problem. I think it probably just the lifters that Harley used in the engines. Just my opinion.
Hope you dont mind can I ask you what oil you use in your engine , ?
I use Amsoil.
My loud tick was caused by a broken piece of the cam tensor blocking oil flow to the cams on my 2020
Glad you got it figured out, hopefully before too much damage.
08 electra glide ultra classic 105 anniversary 108 thousand miles had a knocking intermediate had mechanic change pushrods nd lifters not 3 hundred miles same noise came back no oil pressure loss no loss of power if I twist throttle gets faster let go gets slower any help would be appreciated thx
It is really hard to say. Did your mechanic find anything obviously wrong with the lifters he removed? If so and the same noise is back, something is is overworking those lifters. Did your mechanic check the valves and valve springs? Just a thought. Thanks for the comment. Hope you get this figured out. And please let me know if you do.
I’ve got the same problem on my 04 Electra glide. Just started this week, It’s got 73k miles on it. Did you ever figure out the problem for this? I’m worried about mine as I just bought it and the day after I signed for it I lost my job 😂
Thats very common with the 110's
I a 2009 cvo fat fatbob as you know she has the 110cc, first congratulations on your relentless pursuit to resolve that very critical problem, also were the lifters you showed having the issue with are they the stock oem original roller type, I'm wondering because then I have them inside my engine also. Thanks big guy and Be Safe!
The ones I showed with the issue are indeed the OEM lifters.
@@theharleydavidsonmotorcycl945 thanks big guy for your response, I just hope this doesn't happen to mine, also do you think that issue happened as a result of improper lubrication at some point?
Do you know if those lifters you showed were also connected to roller rocker arms, i would believe so!
@@genecitarella3516 I do not believe it was from a lack of lubrication. Probably more the way I ride. I put on 10-12k a year and a lot of it is winding roads. I got in the bad habit of just down shifting and engine braking in the turns, instead of just using the brakes and then down shifting. This put a lot of unnecessary wear on those rollers.Brakes are a lot easier and less expensive to replace. I am just guessing at the reason it happened. The bike did have 60000 or so miles on it. I am sure it was a combination of things.
@@genecitarella3516 connected to roller rocker arms? I am not exactly sure what you mean.
I think I have this same problem with my 2006 dyna low rider. It’s not all the time but sometimes and on the right side of the bike. I’ll be driving and happens between 3-5th gear. Once I’m cruising steady it goes away and once I stop and it goes to idle it goes away.
Mine sounded worse when it was just idling.
Idle was the time I noticed mine. Getting on it I didn't notice. But at idle.
The lifter, is that what hits the lobe of the cam?
Yes the contact area to the cam has a roller on it then the top side of the lifter makes contact to the pushrod which makes contact with the rocker arm and opens the valve
I have a 2004 dyna low rider that hat a bad knocking noise do you think it could be the lifters it set for,3 years
is it anything like the sound clip in the video?? if so it might be. but there is no way I can say for sure.
It sounds like that at a idle and when you give it gas
I wish I could post the video I have
I would get it checked out. Better safe than sorry.
@@dougthompson7276 did you figure this out?
I have a 01’ fxd superglide & my bikes making the same exact noise but I recently replaced all of my lifters within the last 24 hrs. It’s still currently making the noise. Any help would be appreciated.
Try a set of Rocker Lockers... Noise coming from the top end on the rocker shaft allowing a slight bit of movement between the shaft and the bolt. Sleeves will eliminate the problem without having to do a lot of disassembly.
I put in a set of rocker lockers and although it did help, it did not make as big at difference as I thought it would. Had I known I would not have wasted the time putting them in.
Sorry for the delay. Have not had a lot time to get on here lately. Did you figure out the issue? Could it be a bad valve spring? I assume you checked them. I am just trying to think what else could possibly make a similar sound. Let me know.
Is it possible for the twin cam 88 making this same noise, to be the same problem? 99 Electra Glide with 2003 Road King Motor. Making an identical noise.
yes, this is a twin cam in the video.
I am now on this same boat. Long hard 300 mile round trip along the coast. Mile 260 I started hearing the same. No noticeable performance issues aside noise and a hollow sounding pop here and there from exhaust. Then it went away until mile 290. Came back after a full send from a red light. I just started my research but I’m sure this is it. 06 fxdb 88ci.
Yes especially if you rev it out alot like I do lol
Hope you get it figured out.
@@roereyes8584 was this your issue?
I am a Harley mech and unfortunately, I see this quite often in the 110 engines. They come with SE lifters and they are not good at all. S&S are good but the best I have seen so far is Fueling lifters. Everything Fueling is very good especially their Cam chain tensioner pads. Anyone who has SE lifters really should swap them out asap before they let go and destroy the engine.
I just installed cam and quicky push rods. Bike ran great for 30 minutes. Then lost lots of torque. Where should I start???
Much better to use solid pushrods. Check to make sure they didnt come loose thats common woth adjustables
Sorry for the delay, I would have said check the rods first. May have come loose. Let us know what you found.
So what was the issue with your bike?
Make sure you tighten the lock nut to the correct side. It's easy to run it to the wrong side and have it loosen up after running a bit. Dont ask how I know ...
@@theharleydavidsonmotorcycl945 The crank case was filling up with oil. So the fly wheel could not turn. (Sumping). So I did the oil pump and plate from S&S. It’s awesome now
Also is this dangerous to go on long rides on?
Yeah I suppose it is. If that bearing would have come apart I would have probably had to replace the engine.
Did you find any debris in the engine oil ? Looks like the bearing rollers are gone. I replaced the lifters after recomandation from my dealer. They had several 110 cvo's with the same problem accuring at aproxemately 40000 km's and allways at the rear cilinder exhaust lifter.
The oil change before I found the bad lifter I did notice some debris on the oil plug magnet. After I changed the lifters I found no debris at all. So it was more than likely coming from the bad roller on the lifter.
One of the many valvetrain problems of a twin cam.
I have a question. If you knew you were going to be working on that side of the bike, why did you put it on the lift that way?
It could be because that is the way I like to do it…or it could be that the lift does not fit under the bike frame on the kickstand side. So you have to stand the bike up straight to get it all the way under. It is much easier to pull on the handle bars to get the bike up straight and at the same time push the lift under. Then if I should happen to lose grip of the bars I have the kick stand to catch it on the other side. Also, should I pull it to far over center I can stop it from falling. Doing it from the kickstand side I would have to push the bike up straight and push the lift under. Plus there is nothing to stop it from falling if I were to push it over center. Sorry I took so long to respond. I am sure you have been waiting anxiously for me to answer this important and relevant question.
