In the months following Pearl Harbor, the Imperial Japanese Navy conducted operations at sea, threatening British Royal Navy dominance in the area.
The most dangerous moment of the war, and the one which caused me the greatest alarm, was when the Japanese fleet was heading for Ceylon and the naval base there. The capture of Ceylon, the consequent control of the Indian Ocean, and the possibility at the same time of a German conquest of Egypt would have closed the ring and the future would have been black.
- Prime Minister Winston Churchill, April 1942
March 31, 1942, Japan had attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, her forces had overrun Hong Kong, Malaya, Singapore, the Dutch East Indies, and Burma. Now the Imperial Japanese Navy and Army were heating up for an assault on India, the jewel in the British imperial crown. - Hry

Agreed entirely 👍 Wolfpack's editing and narration are the best in class

Yeah, he's alright I guess.
Same. The best part is no silly BS to listen to like some of the others.

Just loving they actually included German Auxillary Cruisers/Raider Ships. There are so much interesting Storys about their Actions in both World Wars... Just fascinating stuff❤
Absolutely. I never heard of them until I stumbled across the story of HMAS Sydney, sunk by the disguised German merchant raider Kormoran. Nice to see this mod giving a nod to a mostly forgotten part of history.
@MonthManAugust, did you know that there is a conspiracy theory that a Japanese submarine played a small part in that battle before the japs even entered the war?
Usually, that kind of German ships never hoisted Swastika or other German insignia. They posed as innocent ships. Kormoran raised their German battle ensign and opened fire against HMAS Sydney only after they realized their bluff would not succeed.
@@Cybernaut76 6x6 in. guns?
@@mikhailiagacesa3406 I was talking about German commerce raiders and auxiliary cruisers in general sense. They knew they could not submerge like uboats and also that Allies had sea superiority so they usually flew under dishonest identifiers.
I can imagine the admiralty in Tokyo having an intense tantrum after hearing another one of their carriers in the Indian Ocean was sunk by outdated biplanes.
The Albacore is only 2 years old at this point. Introduced in 1940. It would actually be in service till 1949.
@@walkerhartge9177 Only for the Barracuda to replace the Albacore in 1943
Yes carriers of the Kido Butai would be rather expensive and difficult to replace
The one thing that might annoy any Japanese Admiral other than Yamamoto might do so but when Yamamoto receives the report he would say - quite simply...
" This is not unsurprising! But it's to be expected! We are being punished by not just the Americans but the British as well! - these are early days in our war - gentlemen! We must expect losses!"
Still - I tend to agree. The loss of two aircraft carriers is likely to impact on the Indian Ocean area - considerably! Might leave one carrier and some auxiliary carriers in the area of the ocean! The loss of 40% of available naval air support might well be expensive and irreplaceable.
Last time I left a comment on a Wolfpack video was almost 3 years ago myself. I was homeless, working 2 jobs, and still couldn't find a place. I've since left that area and have a home, job I love, and amazing people surrounding me. And at the end of my day now, I'm still equally as excited as I was then, when a new video is out
I'm glad things have turned around for you!
I'm very happy to hear that for you!! Glad you have found a good job and things are looking up :)
@@Wolfpack345 It was a pretty rough patch for awhile, thank you so much providing a much needed mental escape, even if you may not have realized it. I may not be able to donate, but I am forever grateful to you, and will continue to be here watching your content for as long as you keep posting.
Those words I hate to hear right after an amazing strike: "Well folks, that is going to do it..."
:(((
37mm and 20mm on these vessels and even dual purpose 5.9 inch ! And waterline torpedo tubes. This is a Q ship!
The 15cm guns aren't dual purpose.
The DP gun at the stern is a 10.5cm based on the gun shield
That's the word I was looking for..the Q ship...looks like a simple freighter...until it's prey gets too close then whammo...ports open up and the guns come out!
The Kormoran, one of these raiders, sunk HMAS Sydney, a light cruiser.
It’s a similar concept to a Q-ship, but not quite the same thing as Q-ships were meant to sucker submarines into surfacing thinking they were unarmed, while commerce raiders like Michel here were meant to sucker merchant ships into letting them close thinking they were a neutral or allied freighter.
Fun fact a german commerce raider named orion had a Japanese float plane (nakajima E8N) during its raiding period in Pacific Ocean and indian Ocean
That seaplane tender model at 11:35 is incredibly good looking!
I agree. Looks amazing.
I was impressed by it too. These models are amazing
Sadly, the German raider's flag is the "youtube fiendly" one. I'm Polish, so I feel robbed of seeing things bearing *that* symbol getting destroyed with extreme prejudice.
I think 'German-friendly' is the key word, though supposedly German law makes exceptions for historical and educational purposes (like this, arguably.) No one likes sticking their neck out if it's not needed, though, which is probably why they are being so cautious about it 😕
@@thisherehandleIdospout I get the rationale, but on the other hand it makes them Nazis well, sterile. Just another side of the conflict, like in WWI. Tbh I'm not okay with it, this is not who they were. At least to us here in eastern Europe.
I guess this is the timeline where the Royal Navy lives up to their hype and everyone is super wary of them like the entire organization is some sort of nautical John Wick.
I'm not sure if war on the sea models this, but I believe at some point the allies found out that torpedoing ships from both sides was actually delaying their sinking due to causing counter flooding instead of rolling over.
Yea it is modeled
It is in-game to an extent. Next time one of Wolf's ships takes a hit you'll see him switch over to the ship damage panel (bottom center of screen) to see how bad it is, and that has a compartment breakdown that can show port/starboard flooding independently.
@@molybdnum well then wolf should ideally not torpedo ships from both sides to avoid counterflooding and sink ships faster
@@molybdnum
To your point, the current model measures damage by shock more than flooding to determine if a compartment is flooded. There's actually a very low probability of flood spreading regardless of the overall damage to the ship. (realistically, the more compartments that are flooded, the faster the rate of expansion should be) This can be most easily seen in that ships simply don't sink as a result capsizing; they capsize as a result of sinking. All in all, it's actually a good model. I don't believe WoTS was ever intended to be a hardcore simulation, so modeling minor details like flood progression and damage weren't modeled.
You are right. I think it was the Kongo. So when they hit Yamoto they hit all on one side.
You're a looooooooooooong way from the Atlantic, Jerry.
It was very common for the KM to have raiders in the Indian Ocean. The RN presence there was minimum. The ships Wolf is using in the theater represent some 4-5 times the ship presence there. In many ways, it's a good thing that historically the Kido Butai was only 'raiding' into the Indiean Ocean. Had they pushed like they did with the DEI campaign, things may have been very different in that theater.
@@jeffreyestahl But I suppose getting to the Indian Ocean in the first place was an immense task to undertake on its own besides the fear of being air raided or torpedoed by an allied submarine
@@reubenkloot2711
Oh, assuredly. There are some very good books on German surface raiders from both WWI and WWII. It's a fascinating concept; the very idea is actually very low cost and represents an early application of assymetric warfare in the 20th Century, as it tied down significant naval forces.
A German Surface raider named the Komoran had actually managed to sink an Australian cruiser (HMAS Sydney) in 1940, though the ship itself had to be scuttled later due to damage
@@jeffreyestahlA lot of those were earlier in the war, before the RN presence in the region was ramped up as the Pacific war kicked off. Iirc Michel, the raider in both this mod and the ABDA mod, was the last German commerce raider still in service.
Nice they that they added German raiders in the series. Love to what more ships they will add in the series in the future
13:19 - I _thought_ it looked like 9 had a sail. Wonder what type that is?
On a related note, I like how non-uniform this returning convoy escort detail is. I'm not sure how historical that is (the IJN had a habit of keeping other ship types operating together, but I don't know enough about that to judge), but it makes things feel more real than just having a bunch of identical escorts and cargo ships.
Wolfpack345: Oh its a Nazi cargo ship
HMAS SYDNEY: *Gets instant PTSD *
That SH4 soundtrack is burnt into my brain. I can almost hear "Ship spotted!"
I must admit each of your episode is truly exciting. It is just a gameplay but with your narration and great voice it became something more.
Glad you enjoy it!
The German raider was definitely an interesting surprise!
One of my grandpas sailed on the merchant raider Orion on its first journey in 1940/41. they went from Germany through the Atlantic, round Kap Horn into the pacific to New Zeland and Australia, back through the Indian Ocean around cap of good hope into the Atlantic again and came ashore safely in Bordeaux. They sunk many ships and, most importantly, bound a lot of allied vessels and air patrols in the region.
Overall the German raiders had higher tonnage sunk than the uboats compared to the number of sorties, amount of ships and time spent.
Several German "Hilfskreuzer" auxiliary cruisers / AMC operated in the Pacific. The Orion and the Komet, for example.
I wonder how cool it would be if those ships got their own Silent Hunter / U-BOAT style game. Huh. Learned something today either way.
@@user-xe9sg1wg7t Would it be possible to mod surface raiders into SH
@@russelljones3221 It would make for an interesting alternative game mode, for sure, but as for how to do that, well... my programming-fu is still very much White Belt, so I have no idea.

Fleet air arm continuing to wreck havoc just like that did with the Italians
I would love to see War on the Sea campaigns in the Mediterranean and around the North Sea/North Atlantic.
For the North Sea/North Atlantic version, it would be mostly anti-submarine action as the Kriegsmarine had a very small surface fleet IRL. Unless you do a Z-Plan mod or something like that, and even then it won't add much.
A Mediterranean mod, however...that would be interesting. I've heard both settings are in the works by modders, so we'll have to wait and see.
Palpitations! Got my first European CV on CV action in HOI4 and all I had was torpedo bombers, so I recently had the same apprehensions. Nice looking IJN Seaplane tender. My Grand Uncle served on a USN Clemson tender conversion.
Liked seeing the German surface raider but it feels wrong not to get command points for sinking it.
At the end of each episode can you tell us the names of each ship sunk. I really want to know if that AMC was Kormoran
The _Kormoran_ would have been sunk by this point - its mutually destructive fight with HMAS _Sydney_ was in November 1941. Also, the gun arrangement is wrong (the _Kormoran_ had 2 of her guns on the centerline).
It’s the Michel, HSK-9. It’s the only raider available on this mod iirc
Never did but would like to see the wolf under pressure by overwhelming enemy forces! Even up against an AI Admiral!
History (and Wolfpack) shows it never pays to mess with the Royal Navy.
My wedding was yesterday thank you for uploading I didn't get to open my gift till today. God bless brother.
Absolutely fantastic to see a lesser known campaign featured. Well done.
6:37 if you will fly your planes at maximum speed around your fleet at ground level, ships will shoot down every enemy. did it a lot of times. it works
15:15 if your planes are rtb, stop the timer, enter tackticall and fly in that direction. 50/50 you will find your target
it's a shame these videos are so short i could sit here for an hour and watch you hunt down enemy ships
Don't get me wrong, Im happy to get a wolfpack vid, but 20 mins is almost a tease.
It’s cool to see a commerce raider show up. I wish they were any good though; Atlantic Fleet (one of Killerfish games old mobile games) had a pretty cool mechanic where enemy ships wouldn’t fire on commerce raiders until the raider fired first. In this mod the enemy knows you are an enemy from the get-go, kinda defeating the point of having a disguised freighter.

So many comments about the German surface raider.
Its the Michel. It`s in the previous 2 campaigns also. It is well armed, but only does 16 knots and not much cargo carrying capacity.
I`ve fought against it or I`ve had it in my convoys....depending which side I`m playing as.
Most frustrating thing about this game is how many torps a ship can eat and stay afloat. Like a seaplane tender is not designed to survive two torpedoes lol

A German surface raider, eh? Well, if it's "The Penguin," sinking her might be revenge for handing the Japanese the entirety of Britain's defense-plans (captured in one of her raids) for the Far East! The captain of "The Penguin" would go onto be one of only three Germans to receive a samurai sword as reward.
