Good to hear your views on this. I've had a Tiger 1200 for 3 years now, and loved it - fast, comfortable and agile. The only thing that bothers me is the size and weight of the 1200. 270kg with fuel etc is heavy, and carried high up, as it is, I don't always feel confident even just coming to a stop...and 3 years of riding hasn't eased that.
So, I test-rode a 900 GTPro last week, and loved it. Definitely a power differential between the two bikes - the 1200 is a very powerful bike - but in real world terms, the 900 is just as fast, and the 40kg weight loss is also noticeable and welcome!
So my decision is as per yours, and in my case I'll be chopping in the 1200 for a shiny new 900.
    Thanks again for the video

I've had the 900 for just over a year now, and have done 5000 miles, including a tour of the west coast of Scotland, as well as a trip to the French Alps earlier this year. The 1200 would have been better on some of the long motorway sections, but for everything else, the 900 has been great

so happy you posted this review. I currently have a 1200 and while i love it at 5'8" it is a little tall for me. The 900 is 30cm lower which will make a big difference for me and coupled with the lighter weight should make it a better all round ownership experience. I will look at the GT low but i suspect I will end up with the GT pro. Great that you didnt waffle and took a stand on your preferred bike.

I love my GT Pro. Very light and agile and the quick shifter is so smooth. The seat is good for a couple of hours. It really is a hoot! Tried out a R1250GS a few months ago. I found the gear box rubbish in comparison but the power and overall comfort more than made up for that. I do miss the whistle of a triple though.

They have done wonders with the weight of the 900 it feels so light, had the 800 and the 1200, got the 900 as a loan bike and was blown away, the 1200 is lovely but every time you stop you have the weight to deal with, although once on the 1200 again it was like getting an old friend back, so lazy and a touch smoother, the previous question about carrying capacity is relevant, if the payload of the 900 is lower it may be a deciding factor

However, my wife, who is 5’9”, rides with me about 90% of the time and the 1200 was hands down better for long trips. I bought the 1200 Desert SE. it is tall and heavy but the weight goes completely away once you start moving. Follow Spicy’s advise and ride them both before deciding. Only a back to back test ride will tip the balance. I’ll be mostly riding it for longer day rides or some weekend touring (or longer) and camping trips. i think a lot depends on how tall you are. im a kiwi and one of my best rides ever was around Tasmania on a Tiger XCX 800 low. Brilliant bike but when i bought one for myself i couldnt resist the extra engine size and went for the 1200. I love it but at 5'8" im on my tippy toes when walking it unless i have massive soles on my boots. 900 GT pro is 810mm seat height at lowest. My 1200 is 840mm at lowest. Also at 65 im thinking the lighter weight might be good. You know i think back when i was 18 and i couldnt imagine anything having a bigger motor than my 650 Bonneville. So def gonna order a 900.

I own both models a 2018 1200 XCX , and a 2020 GT . I prefer the 1200 . Weight is not a issue for me , and I'm 5' 1" @ 148 pounds . The 1200 is nice for no chain service in nasty weather , and its OEM seat is far better than the 900 GT heated comfort seat I paid to much for how uncomfortable it is . Both bikes pass with ease in top gear , but the 1200 two up is just a better choice . Ive been off road on both also . The 1200 XCX is great as Off road pro mode turns all aids off quickly . While the GT you have to take extra steps to turn it all off . I picked up both bikes in 2020 new from my dealer . The 900 in June , and 1200 was a left over new in the crate with 5,100 off . It was cheaper than the 900 GT with the additions of seat / lower crash bars / center stand . My wife rides the 900 , but she eyes the 1200 .
The TSAS on the 1200 is Awesome ! on the fly suspension adjustments makes all conditions a breeze !

Horses for Courses. I bought the Tiger 1200 Desert Edition in April and simply love it. I do location photography and the Tiger 1200 can whisk me from Essex up to the Lake District or West coast of Scotland effortlessly whilst loaded with luggage and camera gear. It is a good as any big tourer to eat the motorway and when I'm there, gravel tracks, wet grassy car parks and forest fire-break tracks are no problem whatsoever. Upgrading from my old BMW GS 1200, I test rode the Tiger 900, KTM 790 and 1290 Adventure and BMW 850 GS and 1250 GS... but the Tiger 1200 grabbed me. Love the maintenance free shaft-drive that I'd gotten used to on the BMW but loved the overall sportbike whippy feel of the Tiger over my old GS slug. The Tiger's engine maps and out of this world adjustable on-the-fly suspension can give you a lithe wildcat Tiger or big comfy pussycat with the same bike at the touch of a button! The brakes are simply awesome, front stoppers especially and the bike is super comfortable all-day long riding. Big triple super smooth engine is responsive and with my Akrapovic exhaust, tuneful. The blipper/quick-shifter is ace and the weight melts away as soon as you are rolling and on the move the bike is astonishingly agile. I've had bikes since 1976, too many to list, but this 2020 Tiger 1200 has blown me away, we were made for each other. It suits me and what I want it to do. You would probably hate it.

I'm maybe buying the same (2020 DESERT EDITION) next week. I like the looks of the Desert Edition better than the Alpine White. Am I correct in assuming that the color scheme and the modes are the only fundamental differences, and that the DE is as good or nearly as good touring as the Alpine? Or in any event, very good at it? Thanks in advance.

@@scottstewart5784 The Desert Edition has spoked wheels, the Alpine, alloy wheels The Desert is basically the XCx with paint scheme and extras, the Alpine is XRx with extras. The 'C' denoting more offroad (Cross) and the R more (Road). I think the only real difference that will affect the tarmac touring is your tyre choice. I chose to fit 50/50% Pirelli Scorpion STR rally tyres on my Desert because I go mild off-road but they are still great on the motorway. I fitted Triumph fog lights and triumph billet footpegs... The Alpine and the Desert look so good IMO because they are the only Tiger 1200s with a black frame. I got an EMail this week from Triumph stating that the Hill-Hold feature will be added free to my bike on its next service.
I got free panniers with my bike and when you add the extras over and the above the XCx (Arrow exhaust and shift-assist) it is well worth it. 8 Months and 4.500 miles in, no issues and I am really loving this bike. It has been a real tonic to ride this crappy year. I'm an old-school biker and also ride a 1975 Norton Commando - So the heated grips, electronic suspension, ABS, traction control, cornering ABS, linked brakes, blipper/quick-shifter, LED headlights, incredible front brakes, USB charger, electrical adjustable screen etc. are like space-age heaven. I dont think its totally fair to compare the 900GT pro to the 1200 alpine. There are features on the 900's which they removed from the 1200's at roughly the same time the 900's came out. This made the 900's seem better value.
If you get a 1200 XRT you get exactly the same features and electronics as the 900 GT pro.
Given that used values for both are currently the same and finance offers on both new are also pretty similar its only going to come down to personal preference.
You also missed the service cost and intervals. The 900 is a 6,000mile interval bike, the 1200 is 10,000miles. That makes a HUGE difference in running costs, especially on a touring bike, and don't forget the advantage of the shaft drive on the 1200 too, even less to worry about.

I dropped a cb650 on a lesson. We just pulled in for recap and I turned the bike around but I touched the front break and it just wenr down. Lesson learned there. The bike was OK but my pride needed mouth to mouth. Good video 👍

  • @Bazza47

For most people the 900 will IMO probably suit them better. I did the 800 vs 1200 test a few years ago and found then that for solo riding the difference in real world performance when ridden solo wasn't that great. Where the 1200 would win is for someone (who's quite tall and reasonably strong) that wants to do mostly 2 up touring as the comfort especially for the pillion and shaft drive coupled with the extra power when fully loaded would make more sense for mile munching but for most circumstances solo riders the 900 would be more than enough and less intimidating. My wife found the 800 too cramped and uncomfortable and I found the 1200 too big and top heavy so in the end I didn't buy either so got a GS instead. The other thing of course is that the 1200 is now basically an old design dating back about 7 years now? Where as the 900 is brand new. The resale value of the 900 will probably be better than the 1200 too as it'll have a wider appeal. Out of the 2 I'd have the 900

I'm only a 60 kg age 61, so man handling this out of the garage could be a problem although there is the low suspension model that could make life a lot easier. On the other hand, there's this 900. Lighter, easier to ride but chain and small screen but I could get my feet down on this and feel more confident.

The 1200 tours like a king and the 900 like an overweight enduro. On motorway tours the 1200 is roomy and silky smooth and 900 is thumpy and buzzy. For short road trips the and mild off-road work the 900 is fine. On long road trips, the 1200 all day long. I have an eight week tour to the Dolomite mountains and back planned for summer 2021 it's going to be 15 to 20% more comfortable on the 1200. A day trip, probably the 900. I know they're terribly pretty and they're powerful and they can be ultra-ultra-ultra fast but the whole litre-plus bike market (especially the adventure models) seems highly questionable when you make practical comparisons based on the weight of a bag of cement!
