    Tony & Chelsea Northrup review the Fujifilm X100V, the Fuji X-Pro3 and the Leica M10-D to find the camera that brings the best of both worlds: the analog film experience of shooting and the digital experience of not changing or processing film. They also use analog/all-manual lenses from TTArtisan and 7 Artisans, which you can buy new or used at KEH.

    Hi Tony,
    I know you guys are usually fairly careful in evaluating equipment and your general comments here on the joys of rangefinder photography were very telling. I particularly enjoyed your show on megapixels and the size of prints you make from them. Fantastic work.
    Here, you unfortunately made a fairly significant error in your comparison of the two 35mm F1.4 rangefinder lenses. Your Leica 35mm F1.4 Asph lens is an older version (

      Stephen, can you be more specific about why the Leica lenses, both the new ASPH and the "Leica originals" are superior? Because when it was time for me to find M-mount glass, I wasn't able to find evidence that this is true. I haven't shot the Artisan-series lenses, but other than size, weight, and reliability, I wasn't able to find any comparisons that definitively put the Leica lens performance above other lenses like Zeiss and Voigtlander in M-mount. I'm really interested to see some comparisons that you could suggest. Thanks

      @@zfisher Not stephen but I've been using Leica glasses for basically since I've started photography. In order to save cost, I went with cheaper voigtlander and dji optic lenses (ttartisan & 7artisan). I've found out that the sharpness difference between the pre-fle version and ttartisan is pretty much comparable (people who buy the older 35 wants the "character"). However, The new FLE blows both lenses out of the water. The new 35 FLE gives much more contrast and detail with much less fringing than both the older leica and the artisan. It deals with flares much better. Sharpness close up is also pin-point unlike the older asph. Since you talk about zeiss, I also own the zeiss distagon 35mm 1.4 zm, and that lens performs pretty much the same as the Leica FLE, however with a bit more fringing (but overall performance is both impressive) BUT the lens is huge.
      However, the lens that I can give a lot of props to are the newer voigtlander APO-Lanthar series. I do not personally own the lens but from other people using and testing, it is sure to beat the much more expensive $8000 APO Summicron lenses in value with much better performance than both the 35 FLE and 35 distagon ZM.
      I hope this is helpful, cheers!

      @zfisher Před 3 lety +1

      @@tt__shin thanks for your comment, that's extremely helpful, and sounds more in line with what my research had found, that even the FLE compares pretty well to zeiss. I know that Steven didn't discuss zeiss in his original comment but he gave me the impression that the FLE so epic as to be better even than non-M-mount glass, which I also don't think is true.
      Thanks

      Wow, Steve, maybe you should work forLeica AG! Your commission would be substantial! Arguing like £3000, £6000 or £8000 is worth that extra investment against a ~£150 lens? Based on discrepancies of incremental design changes? That's brave, man. But unfortunately the fact finding still amounts to the same point that T&C make here. Honestly this sharpness row feel toxic. It's so Ken Rockwell circa 2010.

    I understand what Tony is after. For years I couldn't believe people were still shooting film, but in 2021 I decided to try it for myself and got a non-Leica rangefinder and some lenses. It's hard to describe, but there's something about having to imagine the composition while you're making the photo without the instant feedback, and checking all your settings manually, that changes the shooting experience.

    I recently got back into film photography and shelled out a few bucks to get a Canon F1 with a few prime lenses. I wanted to have something that was fully manual and analogue and this setup has definitely given me that. I felt the need to get more connected to the process of taking pictures like I did 20 years ago when was studying photography for the first time. I absolutely empathise with your desire to get back to that experience, and, even though, I still love and appreciate my current digital setup, there is something special about clicking that shutter and waiting for the result that will come out of the lab / chemical process, rather than being able to see it immediately as one does with most digital cameras.

    I'm the owner of an X100T and X-Pro2, and I love them both. I understand the competitive nature of this video is just for fun, but one will not go wrong with either camera.
    There is something truly liberating about a fixed-lens camera, which removes so many decisions from the process of going out to take pictures, and with my X-Pro2, I have a bag containing the 23mm, 35mm and 50mm "Fujicrons", which covers most of my needs for the day. Sometimes I'll also bring my 90mm f/2, if I need more reach, or I'm specifically doing portraiture, and it is great that they ALL fit into a small ThinkTank bag.
    I don't have any of the TT Artisans lenses, but I LOVE using adapted vintage lenses on my X-Pro2, and that is another way of getting lenses of unique character for not a lot of money. My favorite remains my Helios 44, which is the early 13 blade version, because of the unique swirly bokeh, and the dreamy, soft quality wide open, and also the sharp, saturated and contrasty images I get when stopped down. If you can't find one of those, look for the Helios 44m, which is also excellent, though a little stiffer and harder to focus.

    When I got my Canon 80D (based in part on your helpful review), I went for EF not EF-S lenses, thinking eventually I would upgrade to a full frame body. I may do that someday, but in the meantime I got a Canon ELAN7E for about $120, and it being a 35mm film camera my lenses are automatically the right ones! Beyond the differences in the images themselves later, shooting the two cameras are (is?) completely different experiences, not just due to the image size; shooting digital is effectively free, whereas with shooting film, every snap costs money - not a lot in 35mm versus medium format 120, but still something. And knowing there are only 36 shots in the roll, you just have to think a bit about what and why you are capturing in an image.

    Tony - Glad to hear you're getting your passion for photography back! :) Fuji tip: I noticed the "Fuji hunt" when the video switched from Chelsea's review to Tony's review. A trick I've found to cut down on the hunting is setting up back button autofocusing, but then switching the camera to Manual focus. I did this because when I do bird photography with my 100-400, I was struggling with focusing on birds in leaves. When you enable back button AF and then switch to manual, the back button will still AF initially, but then jump right into manual mode and focus peaking. Manually adjust on the birds eye and grab my capture. I tried the same technique with video and the neat thing is that when I focus on a bird while shooting video, the camera will still micro-adjust focus automatically if the bird moves, but if I move the focus box off the bird, it wont jump to the background. I don't vlog, so I haven't had a chance to test this "vlog-style," but it might be something you two might want to test to see if it's a usable "Fuji-hack." Anyway, great video as always!! :) I love my 7Artisan and TTArtisan lenses. The TTArtisan 50mm f/1.2 is one of my favorites for my X-T4.

    • @jameskurzynski2386
      @jameskurzynski2386 Před 3 lety

      Okay... Need to modify my "fuji tip." So, I went out to do some birding video, set my "hack" and it wasn't working the way it was before. Started tinkering around with settings and couldn't figure out why I couldn't replicate what I had done just a week ago. Then I figured out the problem - I must have accidentally switched from Manual to single point af (AF-S) when I switched to video.... oops. So, for those of you trying my "hack" and are wondering why it didn't work.... user error... my bad... story of my life. :( Still, I can confirm that simple point AF with a 100-400 gives you nice video! Was I able to get the camera to hunt to the background? Yes, but I set my autofocus pulls to slow. This explains why I didn't experience hunting the first time.... My apologies for the confusion.

    At 5:06 Chelsea said it takes her 5 minutes to connect to the app? I just timed from app closed, camera off (Bluetooth and location were on before) around 55 seconds to a minute-ish on my xe-3. My strategy is to after opening the app wait for the Bluetooth remote button to light up, which means Bluetooth is now connected at around 34 - 40ish seconds. The established connection makes connecting to the phone seem phone much faster at 20ish more seconds. You do not press any buttons on the camera other than turning it on, pressing okay re-pairs your phone.
    EDIT: Also make sure if you have a VPN on to turn it off or connection will fail.

Considering what these sell for used (unfortunately I sold my 21mm Super Angulon years ago) it is great that there is now a 'reasonable' option. Thanks for the tip. Question: Price not a consideration, how do TT etc. lenses compare in results to a 50-70 year old Leitz? If I still had the 21mm f/3.4 Leitz would I gain anything but speed with the TT? BTW: If you do not like screens and big cameras, try an RP and fold the screen facing in.

    I totally agree about how you can take these cameras anywhere and you don't feel like they're a burden to carry. I'm a wheelchair user and over the last few years I have come to adore small formfactor cameras. I rig my x-e3 up to the chair with a clamp and a baseplate and I'm free to go anywhere. I could never have done that with my old DSLR. I suppose I give up some ergonomics in the hand and I don't have all the controls right at my fingertips but that's a small price to pay for the freedom cameras like the ones in this video can give. You can have the best gear in the world but if it's too much of a pain to take out and shoot then it's pointless.

    Nice video! It's always great when great channels deal with the topic. What I'm missing here is a definition of what you consider a "film experience". You can see with the X100V that Chelsea uses the EVF all the time. That's as much film expirince as a smartphone....why not force you to use the cameras as if they were a film camera?
    The walk with the X-Pro 3 was better but for manual lenses you have to use the EVF. but that's not your fault.

    Have you guys thought of doing a side by side comparison of film vs. digital photography? Film has really been making a come back on Instagram, and CZcamsrs are starting to swear by it over digital. They’re saying it’s a more fun and challenging way to learn photography

      I regularly shoot film, mainly with 4x5 and 8x10 cameras. Yes, it is much more challenging than using a current full frame dslr....but that doesn't mean it's better. It's just different. Sometimes it's fun to slow down....way down, but it can also be fun to not worry about the technical issues or camera adjustments, and just concentrate on the image. And then there's the little issue of weight. My LF tripod weighs 16 lbs by itself. :)

    I saw you overlaid "Full-frame equivalent: 35mm f/3" which is inaccurate. I also caught your video comparing full frame to crop sensors where you made similar assertions. I think it is worth clarifying that, while yes, crop sensor cameras DO have deeper depth of field at a given aperture, the light gathering capability of them is unchanged. f/2 is f.2 whether it is APS-C, FF, or even MF. Otherwise, metering would change across sensor sizes - which it does not (excluding variances in sensor manufacturer of course).

    Didn’t realize the Fuji x100V is slow to read exposure. Still, it’s good enough to be the carry-around camera for a current “Washington Post” photographer with two Pulitzers to his credit.

  • @UnconventionalReasoning

    I agree that manual focus lenses are very helpful for slowing down and, for me, creating better art. The Zeiss ZF.2 manual focus lenses for the Nikon F mount do this as well, working on both film cameras like the F100 and DSLRs like the D850. While a split screen and microprism ring focusing screen would be ideal, it seems difficult or impossible to use with a DSLR, so the AF assist has to suffice. If i turn the back LCD off, and only use the information on the top 'Casio-style' (Tony's favorite :-D ) panel, it is really close to my film experience with the N90s / F100. Paired with the Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 ZF.2 Distagon or 100mm f/2 Makro Planar, and I really concentrate on what I see through the *glass* viewfinder to create the best art I am (barely) capable of.

    An M-10 is a bucket list camera for me, but even if I can ever bring myself to pay $6K for a body, no way I could justify the cost of the lenses. The image quality differences between typical Leica lenses and the ones you noted (and others) is just ridiculously miniscule. I've typically upgraded each time the X100 line has introduced a new model (with a couple exceptions), and have the X100V. My other main cameras are a Canon EOS R and a Fuji XE-3 (which I bought about six months ago because of the ridiculously low price, almost an X100V that takes interchangeable lenses). I also have Canon 90D and 80D bodies that I use for keeping particular fixed-length lenses at hand (one w/ 10 -18 wide angle and one w/ either 30 or 60 macro). The XE-3 with an 18-55 covers almost the same range as the EOS R w/ its 24 - 105 (after allowing for the XE-3's crop factor), while being MUCH more compact. Still, the X100V is the camera to just sling around my neck when I'm out and about and not on a dedicated photo excursion (although I've discovered the XE-3 is nearly as good for that, at least with an 18-55 mounted). I started my photo hobby w/ a Minolta SRT-101, then moved to a pair of Olympus OM-1s (no zoom lenses for those), and then a Canon F1 and Ftn (again, no zoom lenses). I really prefer the manual experience for the most part. The old lollipop meter on the Minolta made it really easy to set exposure (as well as to under or over-expose if you wanted to), and manually focusing through a ground-glass center where the image was blurred and/or off-axis until you had it in focus was super-easy. I really wish someone other than Leica - read: someone affordable - would come out with a camera that's mostly manual. Kudos to Nikon for their 2013 Df model, but it was overpriced, and at 16mp it's just not worth what's it's fetching on the used market. So, love my X100V and XE-3; mostly go to my EOS R only on dedicated photo outings - more often than not landscape stuff - or when I know I might want to really blow up the image when I print it.

    Photographers don't need to obsess over a RAW shooting dogma. Yes, of course we shoot RAW professionally, but with the in camera processing that Fuji offers - as well as the ability to create your own recipe - the x100 series is a must have for me when I just want to shoot for fun.

    • @sebastianmatthews1663
      @sebastianmatthews1663 Před 3 lety

      "Creating your own recipe" isn't anything specific to Fuji. _Every_ camera manufacturer offers multiple colour profiles with additional options to control contrast, saturation, sharpening, colour tone, etc. Canon even go a step further and let users create their own colour profiles entirely from scratch-right down to the base matrix that creates the red, green and blue channels-and upload them to cameras, enabling things like in-camera split toning or true orthochromatic capture.
      It's absolutely right that it's great to have quality and versatile in-camera processing options, but it's wrong to imply that Fuji are somehow the only ones who allow users to change settings, or change the results more than other brands.

    I would recommend just getting a great film camera and lens on eBay for like $100 like the Nikon FM and just shoot on film. You don’t get the infinite film of digital but your analog cravings probably won’t last long enough to make up for the $1000 difference in film/development costs

    Actually, X100F’s are now going for more than V’s. I’ve seen them as high as $1500US. The used market has also gone up if you can find one. Similar story with the X-Pro2.

    • @Metal_Vistas
      @Metal_Vistas Před rokem

      The X-Pro2 has a different sensor / processor combo than the X-Pro3 or X100V, which produces less noise at high ISO, and is overall more pleasing to my eye. I'm basing this on the files from my X-T3, which shares the same sensor/processor as the X-Pro3, because I never felt the need to 'upgrade'. I also prefer the files from my X-T2 over my X-T3, despite the bump in resolution.
      As much as I adore my X100T, I'd get the V just for the weather sealing. The new lens is a nice addition, and the extra stop of ND, but the lack of weather seals is my only true gripe with my beloved X100T - I'm afraid to take it out in bad weather.
