    A really interesting & informative comparison between Leica & Fuiji cameras. It’s a compo that shouldn’t work, given the huge cost differential and the diff in sensor size, but it was a revealing film about the strength and weakness of these cameras, and the ‘little guys’ - the fuiji’s - are not completely crushed (at all) by the Leica’s supposed superiority. Thks.

    Good review and some valuable information. I have M-E 220 with Orion-15. Not expensive in Leica prices. To have low budget 28mm camera, I added 100+USD Ricoh GRDIII with f1.9 lens, which is focusing something like two cm in macro mode. I use it for personal photos and even took it on three weeks trip. I wish I found this video sooner. I found it very difficult to find a review of a Leica product that didn't delve into the history of Leica and instead focused on the individual product itself.
    I recently "invested" into the color version of the Q2 and the images are absolutely stunning with very little tweaking needed in post. I will say that the low light performance is not that great if digital noise is an issue for you (ive been spoiled by my Sony A7SIII). If that's the case, than I would go with the Monochrome version.
    Great video! and looking forward to catching up on your content!

  • @benoitpiret9065
    @benoitpiret9065 Před 2 lety +4

    The Q2 is a beast. It’s only downside for me is that its a little wide (26mm), not great high ISO and zone focusing is not very practice (goes 2m straight to infinity….). Other than that the lens+software correction is amazing, great color, close focus distance and macro are super nice.
    I compared with a M11+28 elmarit asph and 28 summicron asph ii and the Q2 has more sharpness and contrast by a lot at any aperture until f8….. I thought I’d have a reason to sell it but it’s just a great camera
    I have a M 28 summi coming to compare. But yea the Q2 lens is amazing plus it has OIS which helps to make up for the not great ISO

    Very nice comparison, thanks Benj! I've owned a 100S from 2013 until it suddenly died in 2022, then the factory told me they no longer support the "S" but gave me a reconditioned 100V for my old S + $935. I've absolutely loved the V. Have both the WCL and TCL from the S, they still work fine on the V but get less use these days. IMO, if Leica came out with a Q3 that had a 35mm lens, I'd probably get in big trouble at home and buy it anyway. But truthfully for me, the V is almost everything I could ask for. BTW, some of your winter pics look vaguely like Minnesota. Where ?

    I used an X100F with WCL daily for an entire year. It was a fantastic camera. The 1.5 crop goes down to a 1.2 crop with the WCL… but it’s obviously still the same DR and IQ as an apsc (not a bad thing, Fujifilm IQ is great). I found that shooting the X100F at 2.0 had soft images, the lens should be shot at 2.8 minimum, and only lower than 2.8 for very low light situations.
    I just feel like that Q2 is everything I hoped the X100F was. The Q2 is the X100F without compromise.

    I have been a heretic all my adult life (relatively speaking). I have also been a working photographer for fifty years. I own a Fuji X-E3 which I recently acquired new (I'm cheap) and I liked the ergonomics better than the X-E4. It is a superb camera. I have been using TTArtisan and 7 Artisans lenses with it and I feel like a robbed a bank they are so good. I just sold my beloved M8 and M9 for an M-P240. In addition to my Leica glass I also am using TTArtisan glass. I have not had enough time with the M-P 240 but on a few first dates I am impressed and thank the photo Gods the buffer improvement means I won't expire waiting for the camera to write to the memory card. That being said it is a frickin brick and although I have big hands it is heavy compared to the M8 and M9. I also bought it for focus peaking as my eyes are not what they were and that is a great help with the EVF finder. I also love the fact I can use "R" lenses and any other of my ridiculously large lens collection with adaptors. The video option (LOL) is irrelevant. I love Leica. I REALLY do. However the performance of the Fuji cameras is at least equal and if they produce a full-frame 24X36 camera... well I will light a candle and cry myself to sleep.

    I think it also depends on how you like to physically shoot a 28mm focal length. At arms length like a phone using your wrist to find different angles of view = lighter camera (Xe4/X100/Ricoh GR etc), heavier camera like the leicas = on a neck strap and using the viewfinder to take more considered photos. That's how it is for me anyhow, the leicas are too heavy to carry for long on a wrist strap to get those weird angles, but then I'm probably more feeble than most 💪🏻. I have 3 (all older versions) out of the 4 cameras and use them all.

    The x-e4 + 18f2 without the lens hood is crazy compact. If 28mm is your focal length and value having a compact kit, it’s a huge bonus imo. It’s become my daily driver. Toss in the 35f1.4 if you want to carry an extra prime and it’s a killer combo. Add a 27mm pancake and you get a pocketable x100v-ish equivalent.
    I do like the x100v hardware a lot and money is no problem, but the x-e4 is really an x-pro with the x100’s form factor, and I don’t want to have multiple cameras. I’d totally recommend it.

    I´ve read or heard somewhere, that the look of the Q2 is almost like a wider look, kinda 26mm or so. Is that true? I´ve been thinking of buying the Q2 to replace my current X-Pro3 and the xf18mmf2, that is the most perfect combination I´ve ever used. But I would really love to have the full frame sensor with a 28mm that is for real f1,7 (not f2.8-3 as the xf18mm). But I´m beaing kinda woried if the look of Leica 28mm is wider because of all the corrections made in camera. When the 28 Summilux was released, I tried that out, and could not "un see" the difference between that lens and the Q's 28mm, so I sold the Q1 to a colleague. Definitely try out the 28 Summilux when you have the chance. Also, Leica does make a 90 degree eyepiece adapter if you want to work at lower angles, and even offers the live view through the iPhone Fotos app for no extra cost, assuming you have an iPhone. Great video! I know you mentioned it, but I cannot underscore how much I prefer the actual rangefinder on the M cameras over any of the others...I just find it the easiest, simplest and quickest to use overall. If Fuji made a true APS-C rangefinder with some great focus-tabbed rangefinder lenses, I'd be all over that and my M240 might just sit on a shelf more :) But other than the new Pixii, my only digital choice for modern RF's is Leica M's.

    This was a fantastic video! A small misconception though. Sensor size does not have anything to do with depth of field (DOF). It has everything to do with your field of view (FOV), but DOF is purely based on perspective. If you are staying the same distance away from the subject and cropping in the image on the larger sensor, the DOF will be the exact same.
    Why people think sensor size affects DOF is because usually you get closer or farther away from the subject to achieve the same FOV. That moving towards or away the subject is what is changing your DOF.
    It is the same for focal lengths. Your angle of view (AOV) of your lens and your sensor size determine your FOV. DOF remains based on your distance to the subject and speed of your lens.

    • @benjhaisch
      @benjhaisch  Před 2 lety

      Yeah, I’m pretty aware of how all of that stuff works but to simplify things, I just used the word “apparent” to describe the overall look that each would give generally.

    • @FTGTapGod
      @FTGTapGod Před 2 lety

      @@benjhaisch good to hear! I only mention it because sometimes the math starts to confuse people. I see even DPs on set calculate stuff using crop factor or focal length. They feel like they are stuck going to a longer lens to push the background out when really they might've preferred moving closer with a wider lens to maintain some sort of scene context.
      Probably more of an elaborate comment than needed on CZcams, but I've seen a lot of people have pretty cool eye opening experiences when they learn that. More options for them as creatives!
      Really was a great comparison. I'm so torn between the Fuji X lineup of cameras. I want something easy and portable for EDC/set photos and you have me considering the X100V even when I kind of disregarded it originally.

      @jpoconnor5744 Před 2 lety +1

      Benj, I love your videos. Keep up the great work!
      I must second the comment about DOF. While I understand your reply in this sub-thread, the video very much confuses the issue. Sensor size has nothing to do with DOF. Regardless of sensor size, subjects at two distances, one closer and in focus and one farther and out of focus will appear identical regardless of sensor size. You can prove this by taking identical shots at the same distance and aperture on a FF sensor and a crop sensor and then cropping the FF photo to have the same FOV as the crop photo. Both will have identical DOF.
      Of course, as you wrote here, moving up or back to get an identical FOV (though different perspective) does change the apparent DOF. Yes, moving closer or farther from the in focus subject due to FOV with different sensor sizes indeed changes the perspective but not the actual DOF. Doing the above experiment with two different distances to obtain the same subject size might prove interesting!
      Having been in photography for 60 years, it is interesting to see how misconceptions get spread so easily these days. Like the analog photography book a few years ago that said f-stops got their name because the aperture ring stops at each aperture click (detent)! LOL! I guess they never heard of Waterhouse! And don’t get me started on the so-called “rule” of thirds! Ask Bruce Barnbaum about that one! Maybe I’m becoming an old curmudgeon! LOL!
      My M10-M and M10-R are both wonderful. My X100V is a lot of fun, too! I’ve been waffling on the WCL and may finally have to bite the bullet!
      Thanks again for your wonderful and informative videos!

    You really should compare these cameras with a Sony A7iii or iv, preferably the Mkiii for a more competitive product, along with a 24mm Sigma art lens. The size is similar to your selection above but with a full frame sensor, image stabilisation etc. The 28mm Leica lens has a near identical field of view to most 24mm lenses. The drawback with the A7iii is a rather poor EVF resolution which might steer some people towards a A7iv to better match the Q2’s EVF.
    I have a Q2 and A7iii. Both very satisfying and excellent cameras. The new firmware for the Q2, released a few days ago [version4.0 for standard and V2.0 for Monochrom] has added significant new features that improve performance.
