Excellent. I was Sony, now Fujifilm. Then I tried a Q2. Amazing, but ended up buying a Q2M. Fantastic. Images are beyond expectation. My favorite of all. But yes, now I yearn for the M with the ability to change lenses. M10M?? Now I fear becoming a collector! But probably the M10R, since the Q2M scratches the mono itch so well. And there's no rush with Leica. You can build the system slowly without FOMO since used values hardly change and "improvements" are relatively minimal with new bodies. Thanks for this!

I’ve been using the original Q (116) for about 5 years now (also bought used). Amazing camera cannot think of switching to anything else. Once I thought of getting the Q2 but huge files and relatively worse low light performance made me stick to the original. 28mm Summilux is simply amazing.

It's like this video was reading my mind and dropped at the right time. I've been a 35mm and medium format film shooter forever and have been considering going for my dream, the M6, but with the rise in film costs and the desire to go out and shoot more, I've been looking at the Q2 or M10 instead to take with me to my honeymoon in New Zealand. I've gone back and forth between the two- the Q2 is weather-sealed, higher resolution, and attached to that sweet 28mm leica glass, but the M10 is a rangefinder and of the digital options retains a lot of what i love about film photography, slowing down and not staring at a screen.
Honestly, after this video I'm still not sure where I'll go. I might just say screw it and continue with an M6 and just be broke developing film. But thank you for making this video and helping me with my indecision!

    • @davidherring
      @davidherring  Před rokem +1

I love the M6. The M10 and the M6 are nearly identical in experience. I too have historically shot medium format, but have enjoyed switching to the M6. The weather sealing isn't as important for me, as I live in California where it rains about 10 days a year, and only in winter when we're all indoors! Either way, Q2 or M, you can't go wrong.

Glad I came across your channel. Your journey is parallel to mine in that I was a Sony shooter (after Canon DSLR and Fujifilm X100T. I was shooting the A7RII-IV and had the A7III and a6600, with all the GM glass. I had been checking Leica out for a bit, because I am never satisfied, and finally bit on the Q2 for a travel cam ahead of a trip to Paris. It is now my EDC. I fell in LOVE with the Q2 Reporter, never enjoyed the post process so much, and now looking to sell my Sony system for another Leica (or two). Dave, like you I shoot Sony Alphas for my photography business. I only shoot tradeshows, conventions and conferences. I went to Sony Alphas in 2021 after lugging Nikon gear for thirty years due to the weight and size of Nikons. I bought a Leica M 8 for my own pleasure. When Q came out I jumped on it. When Q2 came along I jumped on it. Now I'm shooting M-11 and Q2 but for the first time I've brought along my M-11 with the new EVF. It is a game changer. I am now seriously considering selling my Sony gear and going exclusively with Leica. Maybe an SL-2 rig to carry the bulk of my pro work but supplementing it with M-11 and Q2. Life is good!

A long time Pentax user culminating with K1, I swapped to Sony for size and ended with A7Riv and back pack full of GM, sold it all, swapped for a Q, for size issues. Loved it so much i got the Q2 within days, double loved it, for quite a while, then I missed the lenses. 28 is actually my favourite, but sometimes I wanted something else. Q2 shots can crop so well that longer shots aren’t actually unattainable, it was wider lenses I missed, sold the Q & Q2. Got M8 and a couple of lenses, love the sensor, loved the instrument, but, I got the M10 because i wanted something more, and hated it, for a while, now i like it, sort of. I bought an A7Riv again, it felt like a long lost friend, mated it with a selection of Zeiss lenses and man its good. But, i missed it. So. I’ve just purchased a Q2 again. My Sony A7Riv and the Zeiss satisfies my urge in one direction and I know the Q2 works perfectly as my everyday carry. My M8 is my fun unit, when i just want to do some thing a little differently. And man, this Merry Go Round has cost me. Sometimes i think I ought to have stuck with the K1, na, maybe not. Leica just feels so good, it’s addictive. Sony is so clever. It’s a torment. Anyway, another great video mate, i enjoy your channel very much. I’m 73 but you and i seem to be on a similar path, camera wise.

I own the Sony a7IV and several GM fixed focal lengths, but I am also interested in a Leica Q camera. But it is not intended to replace the system and I would no longer sell it. The possibility of doing something with 50 mm 1.4 should remain. I like the design of the Leica Q3 and how it is processed and it could be the only one I would take with me on vacation.

My Leica journey started in 1999 with a second hand R 6.2. The first digital was a new Digilux 2, then came a second hand M8, followed by a M240 and an M-P240. I bought a Q as backup camera, but the Ms are my first choice. I've tried both Zeiss and Voigtländer lenses. Now Leica glass only, OK, there's one very rare Pierre Angenieux zoom lens for the R-system. All my R-lenses can be used on the M with an adapter too. My set of lenses includes a 24/3.8, a 50/1.4 and a 90/2.5. Perfect for a press photographer. Conclusion: the M is for me. Keep on rolling!

I was sorely tempted by the Q2, and in fact made a deposit on it when it was first announced. But, in the end I plumped for an M10-P because the 28mm lens of the Q2 was not wide enough for all my photographic needs, and although 47 megapixels would have been nice, 24 is sufficient for me. For my mirrorless camera, I have an SL2-S. Big and heavy, yes, but a joy to use, and I love them both.

I liked the comparison, thank you. I do long distance hikes and plan to do a crossing of iceland from north to south. Last few years , since losing my last camera in Scotland, i have hiked with only my iphone. Which is very light, convenient, and basically works for 90% of the time when sharing pics to friends. but I still miss a good camera for these few incredible moments and places. I also want to get back to putting more thought and art in to my shooting, get better and enjoy the post processing again. so I am thinking about buying either a q2 or an m to bring with me on that trip. The q2 is weather sealed which is important to me. the focal length though is why I am hesitant. In landscape photography I find that I use long focal lengths more often, esp in wide open , landscapes to which I often go and esp so in the interior of Iceland. The M however is maybe not as weather proof although I think it is also pretty good. rain and also (lava) dust can be an issue. Difficult decision (for a spoilt brat that is able to buy such a camera anyway).

I shoot the original Q (116) since 2 years back (mainly for casual shots where I don't want to work as hard to get the shots).
Got an M240 a few weeks ago that is my daily driver now and I use it for personal work. I also own the SL2-s which is the workhorse to get shit done.
I gotta say that owning a Q definitely was the gateway drug into Leica. I would be happy with just that tbh. But M cameras are just so nice to use and the SL2-s is the most reliable workhorse camera I've ever used for professional shoots. It's also really nice to adapt my Voigtländer lenses on it, the EVF makes it incredibly easy to focus.

One VERY important aspect is the minimum focussing distance. Where the Q/2/3 can basically focus as close as you can go physically with the camera, most M cameras have a minimum distance of 75cm.

I love rangefinder bodies. I have an M4 and a Fuji GW690ii for film. They're a pleasure to shoot with. For digital, I re-entered after a long hiatus with the Sony a7ii. I didn't like it. I ended up getting a Fuji X-Pro2. I do love that camera, but it's not a true rangefinder (Fuji's manual focusing system on its lens is their greatest mistake), and I'd like a little more than the crop sensor can offer in terms of resolution. A digital M (short of a miracle from Fuji) is really the most logical step, right? Or am I missing something else in the market?
(I should note that the Q2 is attractive, but I worry about its longevity, and I prefer 35 or even 40 mm--maybe something the Q3 will address.)

It’s true. Buy a Q2 and you begin looking at the M. I found a less expensive alternative. My Sony glass is too sharp, too perfect, too clinical if you will. Every pore in a portrait is visible. Leica glass has a completely different look. Much softer and aesthetically more pleasing, as do Voigtlander lenses. I paired a M mount Voigtlander 40 mm f1.4 to my Sony A7iii and shoot it in manual mode with center or spot metering, recomposing if necessary. This has put the fun back in using the Sony. BTW, if you place a Sony A7iii body without a lens next to a Q2, they are the same size apart from the built in grip on the Sony.

The body is solid, but has dozens of features and buttons I never use. It's mirrorless for former DSLR, users and it's trying to be everything for everyone. Nice camera, not a fun camera.
