The Best Digital Leica M to Buy in 2023?

- It's 2023 and Leica just announced the new M11 Monochrom. It's only slightly more (around $200) than the standard M11, but we're still talking just under $9200 USD (current price at B&H). At the same time, Leica is still selling the older M10-R for the same price as the brand-new M11. Is it worth it? Which is the best value digital Leica M to buy right now? If you don't want to watch this 30-minute video, here's my answer. I suggest buying a used Leica M10 from a reputable retailer like Camera West and Leica Store San Francisco. They have weekly drops on top-quality pre-owned items every Friday. I've bought two items recently, and I'm checking every Friday for more! Get yourself on their SMS or Email list so you can grab the best in used gear.

you are a GENIUS. I never thought about just doing live view for a hot second to meter the scene and then jump back into the OVF to shoot. Good stuff!
I can tell that you really enjoyed putting this video together. Great stuff! The silver M11 is apparently heavier than the black (aluminum top) M11.
Thanks Daniel, yes the silver M11 is heavier due to the brass top vs the aluminum top of the black chrome M11. For me, I don’t mind the extra weight so I’d go silver M11, but personally I still think the M10-R is the way to go :-)
Been a minute since I’ve seen a bht video, damn yt algorithm! I’m really considering getting the base m10. 24mp is more than enough for me and since I’m primarily a film shooter (120 mostly) I sometimes carry a digital camera with me just in case I find myself not wanting to use film for certain shots. Great video as always Take!
I bought the last new M10R in NZ and got a stunning deal compared to an 11. Don’t regret it at all. I also have that excellent Kamerakraft grip.
A very timely video. My mind was wandering in a dream-state Leica Store, weighed down with the dilemma of which M camera makes the most sense to get-- hypothetically speaking, of course.
I recommend a used M10 that’s warrantied from a Leica store, or a solid retailer, for the best value. If you can afford it, for sure get the M11. If you can wait, I say wait for the M11P. It’ll probs have the upgraded 256GB internal memory like the M11 Monochrom
Another great vid! Thx taco!
Thanks. I appreciate the comment 😊😊
Great video… I’ll keeping my M10-R for while longer!
I think so, it’s a great camera still. No need for the greatest and latest all the time. Maybe wait for the M12.
Personally I think that the M10 is the most balanced of all. It does a great job specially at its price point (compared to the other m’s)
Yes, I love the M10 series from a design perspective. Having the same thickness as the film M was refreshing.
Same here. The M10 is a no brainer, I found a black one used with a slight hint of brassing along the edges for just over USD4,000 at a local camera store right after the M11 launched with a limited 60 days warranty. It's difficult to find an M10 close to that price now, I think I struck a pretty good deal. I still have the M9 on my wish list, at some point I'll add an M9 to my setup.
24MP is more than enough - for everyone using an M the way an M is supposed to be used. Almost nobody in general needs more than 24MP, and certainly not when using a rangefinder in the way and for the subject matter a rangefinder is typically used. The 60MP of the M11 are just ridiculous, especially given the fact that diffraction on the M11 starts to affect resolution at f8. Need more depth of field? Tough luck.
My M10 and M10M are life cameras for me. 24 MP is plenty for me and how I print my photos. Great vid btw
@@weisserth I own both M9/M10 and they are both great. If I'm being honest with myself the M9 is a little more fun to use. ISO 800 is awesome during the day to "zone focus" and still very usable for low light. ISO 800/CCD and 18 MP combination render a film like texture that I love and the brass and black paint is beautiful to hold. Sadly I might have to sell it along with other cameras, we'll see.
@@rf8221why you want to sell it?
I spent way too much energy trying to choose between black/aluminum and silver/chrome, and worrying about the weight difference (including whether it makes a difference in achieving sharp 60 MP images handheld). I finally traveled to a Leica store and played with both versions, as well as with a variety of lenses. Bottom line: no real difference. It is surprisingly easy to get sharp photos (a testament to how smooth the shutter mechanism is, I suppose, as well as the dense build), and, given that you are always using a lens, I don’t find that a few ounces lighter or heavier matters much either way. The M11 is a dream to use and is another engineering marvel, considering all that Leica has managed to pack into that slim, classic body. I have other camera systems as well, but always enjoy that slowed down, considerate process of using an M. By the way, the new battery is so good (and probably the whole system contributes to the low power usage) that I have not even bothered with buying a spare battery. Thanks for another entertaining and inspirational video, and kudos to your friends at Revolver Coffee for contributing the scale!
I love the M11 as well, although I’ve never felt the silver yet. But since I’m happy with the M10-R, I don’t think weight will be a big deal for me either. As for battery life, yes it’s a huge difference, plus have the USB-C connection for on-the-fly charging, a spare battery is not really necessary. Thanks for your thoughts.
Have you had any issues with freezes, etc on the M11? I’m
Curious to look at getting one but I’m seeing A LOT of these stories happening and seems like a huge thing
that is actually the route i went, got a new M10r for almost 3500 less than an m11 and happy with it.
Nice vid! I'm still on a base M10 and torn on the upgrade. ReidReviews finds better edge and color drift performance on the M10R than M11, I already have an Arte di Mano battery door case along with several extra batteries that will no longer be compatible, and it's easy to find used. The biggest draw I find of the M11 is actually the internal storage, to have a better sense of safety that an SD card error won't ruin everything.
Having M10 accessories and then moving up to the M11 is definitely a con….. but once you make the move, then you don’t have to worry. Yes, I prefer the colours on the M10-R vs the M11, but ISO performance definitely goes towards the M11. Internal storage is also a great bonus, but hopefully Leica will update the memory size in future M11 iterations as they did with the new M11 Monochrom. Thanks for your thoughts!
@@bigheadtaco in the case of ADM cases it was a custom order that took like six months to arrive, so part of it is activation energy. The batteries are a lot more fungible.
I am happy with my M10. I'm using my old but gold Mandler designed lenses. For that reason, the M11 is out of the question for me as the older lenses can't keep up with the 61mp M11. Mind you, that's a critical issue if you intend to use your old lenses
22:11 the silver chrome leicas will only show brass as a result of damage or extreme wear. But cool video, enjoyed it very much.
I really thought the m10r native iso was 100 and the M10 was 200? Having the iso 100 as a pull on the latter?
I want to make a correction on the info at 9:00 min. M10-R and M11 are not weather sealed. Only SL and Q series cameras have weather sealing on the Leica lineup.
M8.2 FTW🎉
Something charming about the older pre M240 Leica M bodies…
I personally went with the m10-r
Good choice!!
I’m surprised that you mentioned that the M11 body is weather sealed. Is it really? The lenses don’t have any seal so I’m not sure how this body will be sealed when coupled with a manual unsealed lens!! Would you clarify please?
Tempted to pick up a used M10R but keep convincing myself that the perfectly working m10 I own is enough… that electronic shutter on the m11 is tempting for fast glass shooting in daylight… that’s a frustrating limitation I run into often in South Fl, wanting to shoot 1.4 in daylight on the m10
Maybe hold onto the M10 longer until M11P comes out a bit later? Maybe then we’ll see some used M11 units on the market. For now I haven’t seen any.
The Leica M11 chrome has a brass top.
Yes it does!
If I had the means it would be the M-11 monochrome just released. Would go with the 35mmf1.4 and the 21mm… Well perhaps the lotto will give me a nice surprise soon.
I’m excited to test the new M11 Monochrom, yes it looks pretty sweet. I’m wondering what ISO 12500 at 36MP looks like, I can only imagine….
Which lens you got on the m11 ?
35mm Summicron
Leica makes such sexy looking cameras. From what I'm told, they're pretty high quality too. Not like I'd know, because I could never afford one.
Leica TL2 is a fantastic camera and cheaper than many Fuji cameras!
At the same price go with M11… but I got the silver M10-R for $6000 brand new from HK 5 months ago. For that, M10-R every day and twice on Sunday.
for me the turn off noise reduction for long exposure is a huge no for the m10 r
M10-P was my choice!
I just bought a new old stock of M10-R (black) at Leica Boutique a few days ago. It was cheaper than M11 about 22%. (After deep research, I don't like M11.)
Same. To me, the M10r is the last true digital Leica.
I agree with everything except when you say it’s a slower way of shooting.
For street and documentary, nothing beats the speed fo shooting with a leica using hyperfocal technique. Faster than any Sony ever!
M11
M11 is the best way to go when buying new, agreed 👍🏼👍🏼
Great video lots of info, will have to watch this over and over. Have you had any problems with the M11? I have a recent video contemplating switching my Harley for a Leica M. If you can, check it out.
M10r base native iso is actually 100!! not 200
Thanks, I was told it was pulled, but maybe that’s for the M10 Monochrom.
@@bigheadtaco M10 sensor has native 160. M10-R native 100. different Sensor 😊
@@markymark240682 thanks for heads up.
I've gotten the M11M after the M10R M10P M10M. I feel the M11 is slow and not optimal. I'm hoping the M11P that comes out, is identical to the M11M with the sapphire glass and 256gb internal. Perhaps dampened shutter if physically possible
I’m thinking exactly the same thing, M11P with 256gb
Superficial review. How about talking about the higher performance of live view on M11 vs M10R. Or the constant firmware issues on M11 vs M10R? Etc.
Once I get the M11 again, I’ll definitely go more in-depth.
Neither. 🤗 Leica MP. ❤️
M10R. The M11 seems not reliable enough. The 10R is the best digital M. I’m not sure Leica can top it. Just get an extra battery.
M10R has all the bugs worked out of it after the M10 and M10P. M11 might take a bit longer for sure.
I looked at that table and thought, "Jeezuz, that's a ton of cash there." ...then I realized my bag of Leicas is at least the same amount. LOL
The SNL I needed
😅😅😅
Panasonic? Keep dreaming.
Its not Isow its I-S-O which stands for international standards organization, PLEASE STOP SAYING ISOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go to ISO.org website or any of there videos or talk to their employees. It’s pronounced “eye-so” and not an acronym I.S.O. The previous D.I.N and A.S.A were acronyms, but because ISO is international, then the acronym would be different depending on what language you spoke. In French it would be OIN.
Here’s the link: www.iso.org/about-us.html
All caps and you’re wrong😭😂 It’s widely known that it’s not an acronym. Great operating with a little more humility.
