Why I Bought a New Leica M10-R not M11 in 2023 + Voigtlander 75mm f1.5 Nokton & Color Scopar 35mm

  • Welcome to my new channel!
    Why did I buy a new Leica M10-R Rangefinder Camera in 2023 and not the Leica M11?
    Is the M10-R the ultimate rangefinder camera? Has the Leica M11 gone too far?
    In this video I also have a look at the Voigtlander 75mm f1.5 Nokton and the tiny Voigtlander 35mm f2.5 Color Skopar P-Type II. Reviews of the Leica M10-R camera and Voigtlander lenses coming soon.
    I have been a professional photographer on and off for many years and following a long break, recently decided to take the plunge again, and buy a Leica M camera, having had, in the past, a Leica M262 with a 50mm Summicron lens, and of course many other cameras!
    Lots more photography content to come on this channel, including Street Photography, Environmental Portraiture, and Motorcycle Photography (related to our motorbike channel Mr Darcy & The Ol' Man).
    I would appreciate it if you Subscribe so that you can see more content like this. Of course this is free!

    You are one of the reasons that gave me the final push to go for my A2 license here in Spain, missing only the final street driving exam, and I'm quite sure with this new channel you will give the final push to get back to my camera that I parked aside couple of year ago. Thank you for bringing this content, looking forward to the next videos!!!

    Nothing better than an M and a small lens. I rarely leave the house without my M P typ 240 (or M6 if I can be arsed to shoot film nowadays) and a 35mm Summarit or 50mm Summicron. good luck with the channel!

    As an amateur and only occasional photographer I have subscribed to your new channel because of my curiosity about the Leica brand cameras.
    My camera collection is an assortment of Pentax, Nikon and Chinon film cameras but I honestly don't use film at all now. Instead, I use cheap and cheerful point and shoot digital cameras, all of which I have bought in thrift stores (charity shops), typically for less than $10 each.
    It's amazing how pleased I can be with many of the pictures I take.
    I know that is on a different planet to the one you inhabit as a pro. But nevertheless I thought you might be interested to know that your subscribers may be from a wide base of interest.

    I made exactly the same decision, based on exactly the same reasons. Given how many M11s are up for sale and how few M10Rs, it seems we're not alone. Absolutely superb camera - given my photography a new lease of life after moving from big lens Nikon. It's only taken YT's algo 9months+ to alert a motorcycling photographer and liker of your bike channel that you've got a Leica/photography one, but glad it got there in the end! The Royal Enfield of algos?! Good luck with the move, but Spanish weather's no good for bikes and pics ;-)

    I, too, have an M10-R, and I love it. If you plan to shoot "wide open," i.e. at f/1.4 or so, I recommend getting Leica's Visoflex Typ 020. The Visoflex makes accurate focusing very easy.

    Nice! Back in the 80's I had a Leica M3 SS and a couple lenses. Tri-x film shot at 200 and underdeveloped in Rodinal and then printed using a cold light head from Zone VI. That combination was my fav. Now I use a Sony RX100 III with the Zeiss Vario-Sonnar, mainly for it's small size. Keep up the good work and cheers from Montana.

    Earlier this year, I purchased a black chrome M10-R for a good price. After painting the red Leica logo on the M10R in matte black, I am not envious of the newly released M11-P. Moreover, I am very satisfied with the kamera kraft grip. The unengraved state on the top of the M10-R body allows you to focus more on your work. The reason I still maintain the M10-R is the same as yours. I support your thoughts.

    Nice to see your new channel. I had no idea who you are but enjoyed your approach. I still shoot an M Type 262 and if I were to upgrade I'd go to the M10P rather that the M11 or the M10R. 24mp are about as large of files as I care to mess with, but then I am a hobbyist, not a pro. I also ride a 1996 Harley Davidson soft tail. I used to drag race motorcycles but that was a few years back. Thanks for a refreshing video on photography and Leica's. BTW, the Voigtlander 75mm f/1.5 Nokton is an outstanding lens. I also adore the Voigtlander 40mm f/1.2 Nokton. One of the best of all the Nokton's wide open.

    Glad to hear you have one of the beautiful Voigtlander 75/1.5 lens. It is absolutely a wonderful lens with very good micro contrast. The only draw back is I came across 4 out of 4 pieces with back focusing issue by 1-2 inches . But I adjusted it back to normal and even help my friends to calibrate them accurately.
    Although I have many pieces of Leica lenses, I still like to use some Voigtlander lenses, they are amazingly good in pictures quality and well built.
    I use them on my M10-P and M10 Monochrom. I don’t mind the resolution of the M10-P is just only 24MP, but it is good for me to do some night street shots with good image quality even at ISO 3200. Looking forward to see more review from you.

    The voitlander lenses for Leica M have improved a lot in terms of their build quality since I first bought my 40 single coated for my M3 some 30 years ago. I`ve recently bought a 35 ,50f1 and 75 BP. Still have two film M`s but use the SL2s and digital CL these days. Started looking at the digital M`s recently hence the interest in your vid. I too went the Sony route for a few years. Fabulously capable cameras and I do miss the Sony AF capability especially when you compare it to that of the SL2S (which is poor) , but in other respects not for me.

  • @rexgigout1472
    @rexgigout1472 Před rokem +1

    Liked! I understand. I, too, am struggling whether to add one of the very final few new M10-R cameras that remain available. Most likely, if I acquire a 40MP M camera, it will be pre-owned, and may well be a Monochrom. (I can shoot high-resolution color, with my D850, with my Nikkor AF-S 28mm f/1.4E, a gem of a lens, the quite capable Micro-Nikkor 60/2.8G, and a wonderful 85mm Zeiss Otus. My wife is a dedicated Nikon shooter, so, we are not going to quit Nikon.) Last year, I upgraded M lenses, rather than acquire a new M10 Monochrom, and may yet decide to keep using my 24MP “team” of M Type 246 Monochrom and plain ol’ M10 cameras. Notably, except for starting with a new M10, every Leica-brand camera, Leica-brand lens, and Leica-brand flash that I have, was acquired pre-owned.

    Very interesting video. I wanted the M10R too instead of my trusty M240, but left the Leica Store in Berlin with a brand new M-P240, which was hiding on the shelf for some years, because it's silver. The camera meets all my needs as a press photographer and is my EDC. I had a number of Voigtländer lenses from 21 to 75 mm, but I sold them again and got the Leica M lenses. The 240s are faster in handling than the M10R and the battery last almost for 'ever'. Keep on rolling!

    Great choice! I’m using Leica SL2 and SL2-S for my professional fashion and beauty work. But for personal work it is mostly the M7 and M10-R. I love the M10-R and its quirks. You’re absolutely right about 40MP being more than enough. The only reason for the M11 in my view (apart from the battery life) is the better live view and light metering, but once you’re used to the M10-R you can achieve the same results. It’s definitely more traditional M.
    The nice side effect of the M11 and M11 Monochrome is that there’s now a steady stream of pre-owned M10s, M10-Rs and M10-Ms at reasonable prices. For now I won’t upgrade.

    Interesting reasoning. I went through a similar thought process. I bought a used, black M10 and decided against the 40MP, as the M10 yet again outdoes the M10R for low light applications. And 24MP is plenty enough for me, it's actually the sweet spot.

  • @ianforber

    I decided to get an M11 rather than a M10R. I don’t use it any differently (no in camera charging or greater use of the app and standard transfer of images from SD card to computer). What attracted me though was the battery life and lack of baseplate. I originally got a 50mm Leica lens but decided to try a 35mm lens and went for the Voigtländer 35mm Nokton 35mm f1.5. I was going to get the Color Skopar but found it hard to use it’s so small.

    .... bought the M10. Congrats. Personally I don't get buying dated tech when the latest and greatest is available. As far as noise goes, the M11P is pretty damn good. The image quality I'm getting from mine paired with some nice Leica glass is just brilliant. The files from the 28 Summilux foe example, my favourite from Leica, are the best I've ever seen in a camera I've owned. And over 40 years, quite a few as a pro, I've had plenty!!! I do agree with your thoughts on modern cameras. I dislike them.. I was happy up until my last decent Canon, the 1DSII. That was basic and made sense.
    I recently bought a new Nikon and had to go online in order to find out how to change basic settings. The menu is ridiculously optioned. Coming from the days of shooting film on a Hasselblad with not even a meter...That's where my comfort zone is. I don't need all that extra crap.

    Ah yes, "grain". I remember that 👍😁. Grain was far more aesthetically pleasing than the digital noise of today and had it's place in creating a "look" when desired. A good analogy is analogue vs digital tv. You could still watch an analogue tv with less than perfect reception but the macro blocks of dvb are not at all nice.

    Just like you, I had no pleasure with a A7III (A7RIII actually). Currently I shoot M262 and recently I bought a "Mint" used M10 monochrome. I shoot mainly with a Lux 50, sometimes with an Elmarit 28, occasionally with a 90 F2.4. For me, using a M is not to increase any performance. Manual settings has a calming effect on me, the noise of the shutter is a sweet melody, the ergonomics are friendly, and all together, each photo session gives me the joy of a child in an entertainment park. I don't need more to be happy.

    It was good to hear your thoughts, which I found very useful. I have mulled over the idea of getting an M11, but I have decided to stick with my M10-P, as 24 Mpx are quite enough for my needs as an amateur, and I'm not sure what an M11 would do to improve my photography. I have it paired with an SL2-S that compliments it nicely with the M to L adaptor and a few L-mount lenses. The SL2-S is a heavy camera, though and I prefer to carry the M unless I must have autofocus. After years of using practically every camera system known to mankind, I have settled on Leica because of the simple menu system and the sheer joy of using them. They are expensive, yes, but less expensive than chopping and changing camera systems trying to find the one that suits best. I've now found that system! Subscribed!

      I could help slightly, it really depends on what model, and what you want. With the m10's (don't exactly quote me lol) but I believe the black and silver are both brass. with the m11 models, the black and silver are aluminum, and they also have a silver brass option. brass adds more weight and some say it gives a premium feel. I think the people(like myself) love the black paint over brass, due to the bracing/patina you get as the paint wears. This is no longer the case for the m10 and m11, as they chose to use black chrome instead of black paint which does not wear as much as the paint. Besides those difference, the "R" models "P" models, also have differences and could sway your opinion on which works best for you. "R" is usually more resolution, and "P" has "professional" upgrades, like saphire glass, and a better buffer in some cameras. This could also change the color and material options. I would said find the one you think looks the best and then research that model. I recently got into Leica, and I chose the MP 240, because that camera fits me the best. If I got the normal M 240, I would have probably disliked because it was missing those "P" upgrades that I actually wanted. sorry for the long message but in short the m10 color wise shouldn't matter too much, just check for differences in materials for "R" and "P" models.

    Personally I'd rather ask myself why you went with a Leica M if you want to use Voigtlander lenses at all? You can get them for Sony cameras (like the A7rV) that are in my opinion much better than Leica M camera bodies (image stabilization, autofocus if you want it, shorter shutter speeds, electronic viewfinder with the possibility to zoom in precisely and much more). The only reason to use a Leica M camera is in my opinion to use Leica M glass.

    • @Dad-n-Darcy
      @Dad-n-Darcy  Před rokem +7

      The cost difference between Voigtlander and Leica lenses is a factor, but using the Sony is not an enjoyable experience for me, especially manual focusing, with the viewfinder or screen. The Voigtlander lenses have beautiful character which I look for, and are superb 👍🏼

    • @stefan_becker
      @stefan_becker Před rokem +1

      @@Dad-n-Darcy I understand. Personally I dislike range finder viewfinders because of the parallax issues and not being able to see flare or ghosting. I also cannot zoom in to focus precisely. Also the mechanical coupling of the range finder and its mechanical tolerances makes it impossible to focus precisely with something like a 50mm f1.2 wide open. You simply need an electronic viewfinder for that. But yes, if you're shooting at for example at f2.8 a rangefinder viewfinder may be sufficient.

    They say you can't shoot the fastest lenses - f/0.95 and f/1.2 - "wide open" on a sunny day with the M10-R without ND filters, but I think "they" just haven't tried. With Kodak Portra 160 film, the M10-R's 1/4000 sec maximum shutter speed is often just fast enough - and Kodak Portra 160 is a beautiful, fine-grained film.

    • @Dad-n-Darcy
      @Dad-n-Darcy  Před rokem

      Yes I’ve got to establish that. Most likely I’d shoot such shots in shade so it wouldn’t be an issue but I have bought a 4 stop ND filter just in case

      @Gravitys-NOT-a-force Před rokem +1

      @@Dad-n-Darcy , I have two fast lenses, 50mm f/0.95 and 75mm f/1.2, and I did the same thing: bought an ND filter for each one. But when you're walking from sun to shade and back again, an ND filter can be a real nuisance. If you don't use too fast a film, e.g. Kodak Portra 160, you may find that your 1/4000 shutter speed is fast enough.
