  • Cameras are so similar these days. They lack creativity in their designs. Some may think it's a gimmick, but I think the X-Pro 3 just may save photography from the cellphone.

    I am a retired photographer. I worked professionally for 42 years; 1976-2018. I made the transition to digital in 2008. I enjoyed both media very much. The ability to simulate a film stock is a great feature. I bought I used Nikon P310 that was a bit of a change from my 2008 DSLRs or other point and shoot cameras. It is not a range finder camera but it has wonderful manual features and a 1.8 lens. I find the discipline of this refreshing as an old film guy. I shot 6x6 for most of those early years, even a little 4x5. The act of "slowing down" with 4x5 really changed my work in a positive way. Good luck young man, though I think your skill will not need luck.

      the P300, P310 and finally P340 were my go-to cameras for the last 11 years or so. But the P340 finally died this year, when I could no longer bring it back to life following the "lens error" message by taking out the battery for a while. So I'm looking for something roughly similarly pocketable and good in low light that won't break the bank, I can't justify spending $2-300 on a used P340 when it might die soon too. currently leaning toward either Ricoh GR III or Sony RX 100 VA. The Ricoh doesn't have a flash but if i'm honest, i almost never use flash, even fill flash outdoors. The only flash I ever liked was the olympus F280 I used with my film SRL's back in the day.

It doesnt just simulate the film look with film sims but it also simiulates the film experience with the flip LCD just like when you shoot a 500cm using the overhead viewfinder. I love the grain in your pictures and I think I will include as little grain in my shots from now on.

       @Matt M nobody will notice really unless you let them know in the captions. honestly shooting with a film camera simply satisfies the user for expressing their creativity beyond digital mirrorless cameras. i don't really see the point of mimicking film filters with digital mirrorless cameras especially if you personally don't 'enjoy' vintage camera colors. Thus concluding in the statement of "if you like it buy it, if not then don't". its a personal taste really and i do think its enjoyable.

    First off - production quality/value here is amazing. You've successfully woven all of the elements of filmmaking into a beautiful piece that feels like much more than a review. You've totally sold me on the xpro 3. I've been primarily shooting film for the past few years. I haven't found a digital camera that inspires me in the same way as my film gear. I'm hoping the xpro3 will fill that void. I've recently bought and returned three contax film cameras ((2) TVS II's and most recently a G2) all of which had major issues within a week... so now I'm like fuck it I need something reliable and inspiring in that same way. Thanks for this. Also - Which density Glimmer glass were you using for those shots? I use Black Pro Mist all the time for my cinema work and this seems like a similar effect.
    Cheers,
    Carl

    This is the most beautiful review I’ve ever seen.
    Agree about the interface! I’m a interaction designer, and the reason I went for Fujifilm was because of the modeless exposure interface (no PASM with modes behaving differently based on which mode). And I ended uo with the X-Pro2 in particular because of many of the reasons you give for the X-Pro3. The release of X-Pro3 actually inspired me to turn off the back LCD a lot of the time and give the OVF I used to ignore a second chance (now I use it 90% of the time).
    Regarding the OVF, I don’t see how it can’t be seen as anything but a downgrade. This perspective you say your prefer would probably be easily replicatable with the X-Pro2, but not the other way around. Tho, I guess unless you like to shoot wide with the OVF maybe it doesn’t matter.
    Anyway, thanks for this wonderful review.

    • @GxAce
      @GxAce  Před 4 lety +5

      Thank you so much! Seriously, the interface of a camera is super important, and I think there could be more innovation in that area.
      Yeah the lack of being able to shoot my 16mm on the OVF isn't actually too big of a deal since the lens is so large anyway that it covers a lot of the viewfinder.

    i've been shooting film exclusively the past 5 years, and moving into the digital realm has been daunting to say the least. i'd been exploring all the fujifilm mirrorless cameras as my blueprints for a camera, and this review helped solidify my choice. thank you so much for such a comprehensive and encompassing review. definitely helped guide my terrified film-shooter nerves.

    Great video! My only disappointment with the camera is the missing magnification for the optical viewfinder. It pretty much limits lens selection to the 23mm, 27mm, 35 mm, and to a lesser degree the 50mm. I appreciate the flexibility that the X-Pro 2 offers.

    Okay I was doubting to get it or not, but you convinced me! What I love the most about the X-Pro1 is the film camera feeling, and I purely use it with manual lenses. I was just doubting about the X-Pro3 because of the screen design, but you make some very good points.
    Also great review and video style 👍 will be watching more of your videos

    Thanks for this video. In a previous life I seriously considered acquiring the Contax G1, and I have since embraced the Fuji X system. And in retrospect one of the reasons I first considered Fuji was the availability of Zeiss lenses - those used by Contax. In the end I sold all my old Contax equipment and never looked back.

    I'm not sure if the specified lenses in the description are relevant for the photos so I'll ask just to be sure. What lenses did you use taking the photos and what strength of Tiffen Glimmer Glass did you use?

    • @GxAce
      @GxAce  Před 4 lety +8

      Thanks for asking, because you are correct! I used the 16mm 1.4, 23mm 1.4 and Zeiss Touit 32mm 1.8 for all of the photos. The Glimmer Glass was a #1

    Gimmick or not, the emulated film grain gives the images a lot of character, and, to me, also a lot of memories. If you can stick to this style most, or all of the time, I can see why you're delighted. I have several bags full of film cameras, and I've been planning to shoot a roll or two just for fun, but so far couldn't find time to do it. Anyway, have a lot of fun!

    Good job on this review, I shoot X Pro 3's every day because the layout is exactly the way I would design a camera making it easy to work with. And of course the quality of the jpegs using the film sims/d range/highlight and shadow curve menu items lets me dial in the look I want without spending time in post with RAW. Thanks for posting your video.
