DPReview TV: Fujifilm X-Pro3 Preview - Carbon Coated Classic or Titanium Trinket?

- Some might argue that Fujifilm's new X-Pro3 rangefinder-style camera takes a page from the Leica playbook, omitting a full-time rear screen in favor of a more 'pure' shooting experience. Is the X-Pro3 a carbon-coated classic or a titanium trinket? Chris and Jordan aim to find out.

I really like the fact that Fuji has the balls to bring out a camera that’s not like most other cameras. It‘s definitely not meant for everyone, and it has to be different from the X-T3 - and it is. If you don‘t like - no problem, there are tons of other cameras out there - the XPro3 is just not meant for you. Like Chris pointed out, just go with the X-T3. But if you like the different approach, hey, this is a brilliant camera. I‘m a Leica shooter, and I think it’s quite good that at least one other brand has the guts to produce a special camera that is not meant to please everyone.
The brain says XT3 the heart says XPro3
The wallet screams XT30
At times I wish I didn't do photography/videography as a job so I could justify going with the heart haha -
I definitely still love my XT4 though!
@@matthewneiman I’m so happy photography is just a hobby for me. Whenever my little brother says “look, this picture my iPhone just took looks much better the One you just took”, I can say “yeah, but this was more fun”
...... The soul screams Leica Q3.
Facts. Xt3 with the grip. I use my elan 7e with the grip for street photography lol with the 40mm pancake

That explanation didn't work for me in court.

Sarcasm is strong in this one. That's why I love Chris and Jordan's style. Best reviewers out there.
Confirm! 🤘

Butt getting a bit chunky. We all get old.
This camera is a revival of those old film cameras carrying a slot at the back of the body where you could stick a cut out of the film negative cardboard box to remind the user what film had been loaded inside the camera. Its a camera that bring back the joy of framing a picture to be shot almost exclusively through the viewfinder, a joy the young mobile phone generations will now be happily indulged into.Congrats, Fujifilm!
That intro... it’s actually how Leica users behave! 😂
😂😂😂
@@Puntonghua and Leica wannabes, the Fuji shooters.
A quality and entertaining review again ;-). BTW, what IS that stylish bag?
@@TaipeiGeek 🤷🏽♂️
Leica users don't stand a chance against the overwhelming hipness of my Hasselblad X-pan.
Chris and Jordan are storytellers, not camera reviewers. I must be watching these stories for pure enjoyment, because I’m not looking to buy a new camera.
Good job guys!
After watching several popular youtubers on their initial take for x-pro3, I have to say that Chris and Jordan give the most information and their opinions (which is good) out of it. Really appreciate your observations and thoughts! Keep up the good work! The color of the video from x-pro3 looks fabulous! Still images look great too (of course)!
Anyone else love the video quality? This episode looks better to me than the usual GH5
Actually, a lot of the shots in shadow look mushy to me. 0:27 6:00 6:33 7:11 9:36 13:32
The Eterna profile is really sweet.
I personally think the GH5 log video rarely delivers a good look on DPReview TV videos. It's all down to taste and I agree with you. This looked pleasing. I could have used a touch more saturation....but that could just be how it looks in Alberta, Canada. LOL
Peter Kent I looked at the scenes you mentioned and I can’t see any kind of mush, noise or anything negative regarding the shadows. I’m watching this on an iPad 11” Pro with the brightness turned up. Maybe you were seeing the effects of CZcams compression. (BTW, I’m not a Fuji shooter and have zero reason to like or dislike this camera.) ***I wish DPReview would offer full bit-rate downloads of their videos, maybe in a zipped folder that also includes original photos in raw and Joey format. CZcams just butchers the quality of video, especially during peak hours.
Some of the best looking video from this channel. They are really selling me on Eterna!
"Titanium trinket" or not, I love mine. If I spent a lot of time on tripods or needed 4 more function buttons, I'd have gotten the X-T3. That is a more practical camera, but the X-Pro3's left-side hybrid viewfinder is gorgeous and simply improves my shooting experience. It's placed correctly to allow my big "gaijin" nose to stay out of the way. It has an myriad of easily switchable and tunable options to allow me to setup what I'm seeing for the lens and scenario I'm shooting. And its' hidden LCD amuses me. It is a constant reminder that there're passionate designers in Japan who are ready willing and able to fight and win arguments with their pointy-haired bosses to make products for me that they believe in. I love those guys, and the world needs more like them!
That intro was dope lol
3 years later I still come back and watch this video. One of the greatest (funniest)camera previews ever filmed.
Hahahaha!
You and I are doing the same thing, simply because I want to buy this camera.
I am however, hearing that the X-Pro4 is nearing release.
I really do like the aesthetics of this camera.
@@---us7qfDesperately hoping for a X-Pro4 but might just have to pull the trigger on X-T5 a this point 😔
Love your videos. Please keep them coming.
Yours are the first preview videos I watched for the E-M5 iii and X-pro3, before watching those from ANY other channel!
gotta give a like just for that intro
considering how I use the XT2, this with the 23mm F1.4 I'd be the happiest man alive. The back square screen is awesome! A genius idea to me who still uses film cameras.
The X-Pro2 is so fun to shoot with. I can imagine the X-Pro3 is just as fun. The camera also makes you look handsome 😁 if that is important.
Chris and Jordan, you may be the best Gear reviewing Duo on this Planet. You Reviews already saved me a lot of money. Thank you for your work. That intro was brilliant!
"You Reviews already saved me a lot of money. " you just made them a disservice!
Thank you for the amazing Preview Chris! Hoping you do an in-depth review of this camera.
As an A7 series and M-D user, I'm for sure picking it up. Thanks for the point about the coating. Will go with the base model.
Loved it. And the intro... Thank you!
The colors, the look, the feel of the Fujifilm image...! Oohhh... Please keep shooting videoes with a Fujifilm.
Thoroughly enjoyable review. I had no interest in buying this nor do still but no matter what your talking about Chris you always make it so easy and enjoyable to listen to. Jordan, you did such a great job filming this when you could barely even access the LCD. So good!
Fuji Eterna is that of legends.
Camera Conspiracies can’t wait to see your vid about this camera
@@Ponskippa All he wants is the perfect camera.
Julian Fletcher yeah he does! Lol

The intro was hilarious! good review btw. I've being wait for a camera where the LCD is removable or hidden. For travel and street photography I don't like when the view mode goes to LCD. I mainly shot EVF only. While doing landscape an LCD screen is essential for histograms and leveling when used with a tripod. Very tempted to upgrade my X-E3 to such a camera however the size of the wee X-E3 is great for travel photography. Thanks Jordan for the video review that was super helpful and film simulation I agree looks lovely.
Incredible! They changed almost everything I‘d change in the XP2, the way I’d change it. It’s perfect, the flipped-in screen alone is worth the extra money. However, the XP2 is good enough for me, I‘m not going to get an XP3, but I hope they will hand the classic neg down to it.
No. No no
.u I'll
You guys crack me up! Great shots and I'm really digging the way this video looks!
I am not looking at a new camera but the production quality of these reviews are brilliant and Chris and Jordan are so personable, makes it entertaining.
as always, very good review, thank you :) I'm fuji fan, but you hit the point perfectly ... also I love the intro :)))
Always so good and detailed reviews. Bravo!
This...this is cinematic, informative, and, amazing!
Excellent review. Thank you. As an X-Pro2 enthusiast I think I will stick with what I have and resist the temptation to "upgrade".
I find that flip down screen works great for "head
down" shots - like an old twin lens reflex - folks don't know you're
looking at them so great for street shots! Love it! It's the way flip screens
should be!
Great video! Specially the intro hahahahahah
It is nice that you filmed everything with the xpro3, I found that I like a lot more the image quality that you make with the gh5/gh5s. The crispness, the colors, your gh5 footage looks much better to me.
The sensor size war and the hate that some are trying to create is absolute nonsense.
Don't get me wrong, the photos looked beautiful, and that classic negative is fire! 🔥🔥🔥
Also, in my humble opinion, instead of the hybrid viewfinder which increases thee cost of the camera, they should have put ibis.
best and most meaningful review of this camera ive come across. thank you
I would immensely love to get that custom focus function on my X-H1 and X-T2.
Thanks for the detailed and helpful video. I purchase the XT3 which I will admit is a very capable camera and more reasonably priced than the Xpro 3. I wanted a flip screen for predominantly waist level street shots. Nontheless, I have had a tough time with the XT3 flip screen. It is not easy to flip out quickly and is essentially a 2 stage pull out for waist level landscape views and is also obstructed by the central eye piece. I was initially a little dubious about the novel screen on the X Pro 3, but honestly it seems so much easier to pull out for street shots and the build quality seems excellent. The screen mechanism on the XT3 seems to have come from an inferior camera compared to the rest of its build. I think it will be the X pro 3 for me ...and in black!
Nice music choice. That intro was great :). I can see this camera working for people who really enjoy the process. I do as well, but I also enjoy low prices and efficiency. Not my camera, but it will have a market.
Incredible review. I love you guys. ❤️
Excellent review! I love the Pro series from Fujifilm and look forward to picking up the Pro 3 when it is available. Cheers!
One feature that i waiting for you guys to talk about is the hdr function in the x-pro-3
Really great review gentlemen. Enjoyed every second of it
Like the promo, Your best review yet!
regarding that intro - YOU LOOKED MAHVELOUS !!! style points galore ! :) Seriously - good real impressions feedback - x-t3 / x-pro3 comparisons. I'm not really video savvy, but the simple feedback from the videographer really cut to the chase and hit the high points. I thought that color grading/look was really exceptional, and just as pure image it sure beats the crap out of some of the yuck-o "creative" color work showing up today. THANKS for keeping images and content real guys. Much appreciated.
I love your content, best camera reviews period.
This video looks beautiful and the photos that Chris took are some of the best he’s ever shared during a review. If you just listened to the audio of this you’d think it was a negative review, but the output is stunning!
joel8x - Agree on the images, but autumn light in this area is lovely, and Chris is one of the rare reviewers who can always find interesting shots, likewise Jordan with the video compositions and editing.
Ha, brilliantly done intro! And much appreciate the candid views. Love x100f but want to be able to swap out prime focal lengths. So have had my eye on the xpro line. Had they not removed the D-pad and switched to the wacky lcd i was going to consider it. But its a non-starter with these changes.
yep. So much on the x-pro series was solid, all it needed was a tilt screen, looks like someone was holding the monkey's paw when wishing for that one
Awesome, awesome review!
Like the honesty and the awe of the technological innovations and shortcomings.
I only wish you would realize that Xpro3 is a photo range finder, meant to be used incognito.
Thanks..... great review. I simply love the images of the video... .great colors. Nice.
best camera review video introduction ever.
The intro is dope. I must have watched it for at least ten times
First, the OVF is really like an old rf film camera . From experience : it is nice to see outside the frame to compose or anticipate something coming into but with a tele the area becomes just too small.
I must point out that we currently have a much wider choice of focals and a lot more cropping possibilities than in the old 35 film days but if you shoot mostly a 23 and/or maybe a 35 , you must try this.
Second, the viefinder being on the left, if you are a left eye shooter, your nose does not interfeer with the screen and you have room to reach the joystick.
This is clearly a specialty and retro approach that could be a dream come true to some and while not for me , i salute this as a rare tool providing a different experience . This would have been a risky move for Fuji if they did not also have the XT-3 but they do.
Thanks for this honest review; you guys are the best
Excellent review. Entertaining, informative and well balanced.
Distance scale / focus distance on the sub monitor would be absolutely perfect. So useful to look down and know distance without looking through the viewfinder.
This whole video is a testimony to Fujifilm’s video colours. This is you guys’ best looking video to date. I have the GH5 and shoot with it every day, like you, but I really don’t like the out of camera colours. A lot of work washing away that Pana cast. This here is just pure gorgeous. Whenever Fujifilm is dropping their first X camera with no time limit, I’m probably there first in line..
And by the way, I can see this flip out screen being killer and stealthy for waist level street photography. Not sure why you didn’t emphasise that in the video.
Ditto that. If this video is 8 bit?! See their mini-masterpiece review of the X-T3 shot in 10 bit X-T3.
ok i gotta say this, the photos that came out from that camera with the film simulation is just beautiful the color is very superia...and the video quality is amazing...nothing beats that Fuji color
Only two good camera reviewers out there.. You're one of them. Thanks a lot for another great and VERY informative Review 👍🏻
They could easily show you the histogram on the tiny display on the back after taking a shot like Hasselblad does on their H series. This is such a great feature for checking that everything is save.
Brilliant review, thanks mate...
Really nice videoquality! Super natural and deep backgrounds.
Nice street photo opportunity at 5:37 with the green bicycle and the green fire hydrant. Nevermind, we are busy with gear and tech specs 🤣
That little screen is adooooorable. Honestly, nice touch as it doubles as the DSLR shoulder display.
That eterna profile works for me. Very nice video and many of the stills shown were just excellent. Y'all just might become photographers one day. 😜
Loved the review guys, but I'm still buying the premium ovf / evf for some street photography experience. Sometimes you need a break from an A7Riv with a 24mm GM.
I appreciate Fuji has the ball the make something like this in 2019, love the OVF on my Xpro and X100, can’t wait to try xpro3 out
Hopefully that other ball will drop soon, along with the X-H2, so Fuji can show off it's new pair.
H2 better have a d-pad though.
Mike Hayse lmaoooooo
Love it. I already only use the evf to look at my photos so I don’t need the screen. Yes, I look weird - like I’m taking a photo of the floor - but I can see the image way better. It’s not for everyone... great!...so maybe I can get one secondhand one day!
Thanks so much for showing the problems Dura has with finger prints, because of your review I pre ordered the regular black like my xpro2. Seeing people now who have the Dura black and seeing same problem would have really bothered me if I got it. Thanks Again!!
You shot it on the camera! The true truth. Thank you! Thank you! The satire was purrrrfect!
This is the first time I've watched a review that I regretted buying my X-T3. I wish I had gotten an X-Pro3 now. Purely because of how I shoot. I rarely use the LCD on my camera except to change settings at home and I have never shot video and I don't really anticipate that changing. I like the minimalism of the X-Pro 3 and how it attempts to force you out of menus and information overload and puts on the emphasis on taking pictures. I also really like the way it looks. I think the OVF is probably a novelty, but I can also see how having that option could be creatively motivating for some people.
Might wait to see a xe4. Do love the 4 tiles concept.
I'm still shooting on my XT-20 and have been looking to upgrade. I really like the way the X-Pro line looks, but I can't bring myself to go with this one. XT-3 it is!
I really like the intro. I half expected you to say you could see photons left over from the Big Bang. THAT would have been a great marketing tool!
Loved that intro...The farce is strong with this one 🤣.
I want to love this camera but you raised some very interesting points, it’s definitely a try before you buy and I don’t mean just for the day. However I have no need or desire to upgrade at this point and I’ll happily stick with my X-E3, although I do hope that Q menu option trickles down as a software upgrade, that I liked very much.
Always great reviews. Thank you!
The articulation of the LCD could have been better to help shoot better when overreaching a crowd of people but I'd be fine if the camera didn't even have an LCD. They had good intentions but we never get what we want all in one package and yet we always find something to complain about, lol. as u know the x pro serious never been about video capabilitiesor landscape photography anyway so I wouldn't bother with putting a tripod ring attached to the camera. I do agree with you on the magnification options though. Still, great camera imo. Faster focus better ISO stronger body... Let's go out and shoot
Wonderful honest review 👍
Great review, thank you for the frank assesment :)
I was super excited for the xpro3.. the hidden lcd and lack of d-pad has made it un-usable for pro work.. although for street photography its amazing! sad to hear about the mucky effect of that finish! im not loving that mini display at all tho! great vid guys.. very entertaining as always! :-)
Great review! Thanks
This intro was genius!!! I love this
Hope this means I can finally get myself a sweet X-Pro 2 for not a bucketful of money!
Always enjoy Chris and Jordan reviews, even when Chris is so wrong about the viewfinder and LCD, both of which are friggin awesome. Fuji: please add this screen to the X100 model.
It looks interesting. Glade Fuji is appealing to different crowds. They make the best variety of apsc cameras. I also see they added clarity into the film processing options, that is quite welcomed and one thing they had been missing.
Nice work. Agree with you about the rear screen
The Classic Negative film simulation would be good for a color graded look in videos. Overall, I think it's a great weather-sealed street camera you could carry with you just about anywhere. It would look nice in a leather half-case.
I’ve been really lusting after the Leica M series cameras. I decided to look at Leica m alternatives and this was the first to pop up. I’m really glad that I came across this camera. Seems to have everything that I want in a rangefinder style digital and doesn’t have the ridiculous Leica prices. I love Leica and I understand the pricing, but it’s still expensive as hell. This Fuji seems the best of all worlds. I’m a film shooter who saw the dawn of the digital camera age. Maybe it’s just old habits but I shoot digital cameras like film. It just doesn’t fully translate. This camera seems to get back to it and is a digital camera made for those who shoot film. I absolutely love that “film” type simulation on the back, that’s a great throwback to the old film cameras that actually had that holder for the film box tab
Love it. Though if my x100f had the fold away screen and weather sealing......
Great video.... The EVF is special because you can use manual focus glass with focus peaking through the EVF. The sad part is you probably won’t find an underwater housing for underwater photography due to the flippy screen....
Still the best camera review intro out there
I think for people wanting a more discreet look, the camera is beautiful. Can you swipe though different custom settings or film looks with the back panel?
The moment COVID ends, I'm buying one of these and heading to new York. I miss my street photography. I love the urban jungle!
What a nice looking camera but I agree with Chris about the ovf.
By the way does any one know what lens hood that is?
I love that intro 😆
I want a black X-Pro3.
Love the intro this camera will certainly pull those types in like moths to a flame.
That intro was godlike
Nice honest and to the point. Rich mans toy, upgrading my 7100 to the xt3 and my X100s to the f
You are my fave kit reviewers of all time Jordan & Chris!!
The colour profile in this video is sublime.
Excellent video! Thank you so much. I think I will wait for the xpro 4 to see if they can give us a backlight on that rear screen. :-)
This camera looks so much fun to shoot with
