DPReview TV: Fujifilm X-Pro3 Preview - Carbon Coated Classic or Titanium Trinket?

  • Some might argue that Fujifilm's new X-Pro3 rangefinder-style camera takes a page from the Leica playbook, omitting a full-time rear screen in favor of a more 'pure' shooting experience. Is the X-Pro3 a carbon-coated classic or a titanium trinket? Chris and Jordan aim to find out.

I really like the fact that Fuji has the balls to bring out a camera that’s not like most other cameras. It‘s definitely not meant for everyone, and it has to be different from the X-T3 - and it is. If you don‘t like - no problem, there are tons of other cameras out there - the XPro3 is just not meant for you. Like Chris pointed out, just go with the X-T3. But if you like the different approach, hey, this is a brilliant camera. I‘m a Leica shooter, and I think it’s quite good that at least one other brand has the guts to produce a special camera that is not meant to please everyone.

This camera is a revival of those old film cameras carrying a slot at the back of the body where you could stick a cut out of the film negative cardboard box to remind the user what film had been loaded inside the camera. Its a camera that bring back the joy of framing a picture to be shot almost exclusively through the viewfinder, a joy the young mobile phone generations will now be happily indulged into.Congrats, Fujifilm!

Peter Kent I looked at the scenes you mentioned and I can’t see any kind of mush, noise or anything negative regarding the shadows. I’m watching this on an iPad 11” Pro with the brightness turned up. Maybe you were seeing the effects of CZcams compression. (BTW, I’m not a Fuji shooter and have zero reason to like or dislike this camera.) ***I wish DPReview would offer full bit-rate downloads of their videos, maybe in a zipped folder that also includes original photos in raw and Joey format. "Titanium trinket" or not, I love mine. If I spent a lot of time on tripods or needed 4 more function buttons, I'd have gotten the X-T3. That is a more practical camera, but the X-Pro3's left-side hybrid viewfinder is gorgeous and simply improves my shooting experience. It's placed correctly to allow my big "gaijin" nose to stay out of the way. It has an myriad of easily switchable and tunable options to allow me to setup what I'm seeing for the lens and scenario I'm shooting. And its' hidden LCD amuses me. It is a constant reminder that there're passionate designers in Japan who are ready willing and able to fight and win arguments with their pointy-haired bosses to make products for me that they believe in. I love those guys, and the world needs more like them!

The intro was hilarious! good review btw. I've being wait for a camera where the LCD is removable or hidden. For travel and street photography I don't like when the view mode goes to LCD. I mainly shot EVF only. While doing landscape an LCD screen is essential for histograms and leveling when used with a tripod. Very tempted to upgrade my X-E3 to such a camera however the size of the wee X-E3 is great for travel photography. Thanks Jordan for the video review that was super helpful and film simulation I agree looks lovely.

The sensor size war and the hate that some are trying to create is absolute nonsense.
Don't get me wrong, the photos looked beautiful, and that classic negative is fire! 🔥🔥🔥

Thanks for the detailed and helpful video. I purchase the XT3 which I will admit is a very capable camera and more reasonably priced than the Xpro 3. I wanted a flip screen for predominantly waist level street shots. Nontheless, I have had a tough time with the XT3 flip screen. It is not easy to flip out quickly and is essentially a 2 stage pull out for waist level landscape views and is also obstructed by the central eye piece. I was initially a little dubious about the novel screen on the X Pro 3, but honestly it seems so much easier to pull out for street shots and the build quality seems excellent. The screen mechanism on the XT3 seems to have come from an inferior camera compared to the rest of its build. I think it will be the X pro 3 for me ...and in black!

First, the OVF is really like an old rf film camera . From experience : it is nice to see outside the frame to compose or anticipate something coming into but with a tele the area becomes just too small.
I must point out that we currently have a much wider choice of focals and a lot more cropping possibilities than in the old 35 film days but if you shoot mostly a 23 and/or maybe a 35 , you must try this.
Second, the viefinder being on the left, if you are a left eye shooter, your nose does not interfeer with the screen and you have room to reach the joystick.
This is clearly a specialty and retro approach that could be a dream come true to some and while not for me , i salute this as a rare tool providing a different experience . This would have been a risky move for Fuji if they did not also have the XT-3 but they do.

I have the GH5 and shoot with it every day, like you, but I really don’t like the out of camera colours. A lot of work washing away that Pana cast. This here is just pure gorgeous. Whenever Fujifilm is dropping their first X camera with no time limit, I’m probably there first in line..

This is the first time I've watched a review that I regretted buying my X-T3. I wish I had gotten an X-Pro3 now. Purely because of how I shoot. I rarely use the LCD on my camera except to change settings at home and I have never shot video and I don't really anticipate that changing. I like the minimalism of the X-Pro 3 and how it attempts to force you out of menus and information overload and puts on the emphasis on taking pictures. I also really like the way it looks. I think the OVF is probably a novelty, but I can also see how having that option could be creatively motivating for some people.

    Always great reviews. Thank you!
The articulation of the LCD could have been better to help shoot better when overreaching a crowd of people but I'd be fine if the camera didn't even have an LCD. They had good intentions but we never get what we want all in one package and yet we always find something to complain about, lol. as u know the x pro serious never been about video capabilitiesor landscape photography anyway so I wouldn't bother with putting a tripod ring attached to the camera. I do agree with you on the magnification options though. Still, great camera imo. Faster focus better ISO stronger body... Let's go out and shoot

I was super excited for the xpro3.. the hidden lcd and lack of d-pad has made it un-usable for pro work.. although for street photography its amazing! sad to hear about the mucky effect of that finish! im not loving that mini display at all tho! great vid guys.. very entertaining as always! :-)

Always enjoy Chris and Jordan reviews, even when Chris is so wrong about the viewfinder and LCD, both of which are friggin awesome. Fuji: please add this screen to the X100 model.

It looks interesting. Glade Fuji is appealing to different crowds. They make the best variety of apsc cameras. I also see they added clarity into the film processing options, that is quite welcomed and one thing they had been missing.

The Classic Negative film simulation would be good for a color graded look in videos. Overall, I think it's a great weather-sealed street camera you could carry with you just about anywhere. It would look nice in a leather half-case.

I’ve been really lusting after the Leica M series cameras. I decided to look at Leica m alternatives and this was the first to pop up. I’m really glad that I came across this camera. Seems to have everything that I want in a rangefinder style digital and doesn’t have the ridiculous Leica prices. I love Leica and I understand the pricing, but it’s still expensive as hell. This Fuji seems the best of all worlds. I’m a film shooter who saw the dawn of the digital camera age. Maybe it’s just old habits but I shoot digital cameras like film. It just doesn’t fully translate. This camera seems to get back to it and is a digital camera made for those who shoot film. I absolutely love that “film” type simulation on the back, that’s a great throwback to the old film cameras that actually had that holder for the film box tab

Love it. Though if my x100f had the fold away screen and weather sealing......

Great video.... The EVF is special because you can use manual focus glass with focus peaking through the EVF. The sad part is you probably won’t find an underwater housing for underwater photography due to the flippy screen....

I think for people wanting a more discreet look, the camera is beautiful. Can you swipe though different custom settings or film looks with the back panel?
